Been a long time since I have been here--new owners. Susie is gone! Not a good transition. "Scallion Pancake" (really a chive dumpling -gui chai) are my favorite. Completely undercooked. Drunken Noodle--(pad kee mow)_a Thai staple, --soggy, bland--way too sweet. My friend ordered Orange Chicken--broccoli totally raw, chicken bland. More of a Chinese restaurant than Thai. Seems like Thai Orchid is under new management/ownership as of February 2025. The food is much different than before and the prices are about 20% higher, too. I got my 'usual' order from when it was the prior ownership/management and have to say I was less than impressed. I ordered spring rolls which have a large portion size (6 large rolls) which are much larger than the prior owners but the taste is just mainly of cabbage and oil. Not much flavor and they seemed to be a little dense/soggy with oil. The crab rangoons were made with imitation crab meat and had curry, not really any crab flavor. They seemed to use a thin premade wrapper. I also got pad thai which was okay. It was a bit on the mushy side. Flavor was okay but it just didn't seem to have the same fresh, clean quality as prior recipe. Tasted similar to a lot of other thai restaurants, which may not be a bad thing I guess. Finally I ordered drunken noodles for lunch the next day. These did not come spicy at all but instead came with a chili sauce on the side. The noodles themselves were really thick and gummy and bunched up (kind of a squareish size) rather than long ribbons. There was just almost no flavor to this dish and the flavor was just fish sauce or something similar. No complexity or layers of flavor. Very one dimensional. Overall, for the higher price it was relatively disappointing. read more

Small but good place for Thai food in Cranston. The lady there is really sweet and friendly. We got the nime chow, chicken Tom yum soup, red curry w/ chicken and the beef with vegetables in oyster sauce. The Tom yum soup def had a kick to it, and was on the spicy side. There's just so much to love about this spot. I believe they are only doing take out now but I drive twenty minutes each way just to get it. The food tastes...real. Ok that may sound strange but I also go to mai Thai in Smithfield and it's decent but everything is always coated in a thick sauce and you don't really feel like you're eating individual ingredients. Here you definitely do. Everything looks and tastes like it was made in a home kitchen. Mostly because it is. The owners are husband and wife and absolutely adorable. The food is so fresh and cooked with love. I hate that expression but it's so appropriate for here. I will say there are a couple misses on the menu, particularly the Pad Thai. It's not particular good at all. Most everything else is delicious. My favorites are drunken noodle, mama noodle, coconut shrimp and veggie pineapple fried rice. The rice is a little bland but actually is really nice with the other strong flavors. Their chicken fingers are not at all what you would expect. They are basically chicken tenders you'd get off a kids menu but you know what? They're really good! The restaurant has been sold to new owners. I was a customer of thai orchid for 20 years. It used to be wonderful. I ordered soup and I felt like I was calling a large restaurant. I was just a number. We ordered soups and it was an hour to get it. The old owners even on a busy Saturday night it would be 25 minutes. The soup was bland and they have no substitutions. Old owners were accommodating and the reason it lasted so long. They took the name but it will never be the same. They won't make substitutions for people with dietary restrictions. read more

I'm not one to leave bad reviews but I was very disappointed. I got Pad See Ew and Pad Thai. They were essentially flavorless. Pad See Ew is supposed to have a rich brown color and this was barely off white. The Pad Thai was even worse. I opened up a box of white noodles. It was like they didn't put a drop of sauce on it. First time ordering, we usually order from a place nearby that's pretty good but closed today. I was home sick scoping out places for some comfort food. I see the overall high ratings and saw a few unhappy customers/photos so was not sure but took a chance. The lady who answered said what sounded like "love you" before I hung up and my husband confirmed she seemed to say the same in person. She can say whatever she likes because this food is saying I love you to my tummy. Don't judge based on this photo because I had already tore into it, but notice the generous veggies in this pad see ew. It tastes interesting, more than just the usual noodles and sprouts in brown sauce. It's not too heavy, just the right amount of oil, and even the onion (which I usually don't eat raw) is sweet and crunchy. If it's always this good this is my new favorite. read more

We ordered Tom Yum soup. It had all the proper veggies, mushrooms & shrimp but was missing the major component, Tom Yum flavor, much too bland for this soup. When it's good it's excellent and flavorful, this was not. We also had the spring rolls, (not fried) These were nice and soft (2rolls) with practically nothing in them and not flavorful either. The rolls came with a sweetened sauce & peanuts. We had to request hot sauce with the spring rolls. At 6.00 you would think they could do better with content. I went with a friend for lunch today. (Two averaged sized ladies).The woman and man who worked there (owner/spouses I assume) were very sweet and pleasant. We each ordered one dish. I got the drunken noodles and my friend got a yellow curry. The portions were very small, for the price. The bill came to $30 for two lunch plates, plus a tip, almost $40 (no drinks no apps), which is a lot of money to spend on lunch, and leave hungry. I have no problem with spending a lot of money, but I'd like to leave full. Please make larger portions, because sadly, we won't be back. read more

Thai Orchid is a little hole in the wall located on Park Ave. I believe it has 3 or 4 tables and a takeout window. Not your IDEAL situation as far as dining in goes, but...it has it's own charm to it. I would order takeout just so you can get the ENTIRE Thai Orchid experience. What does that entail? The most precious lady (Susie) answering, taking and preparing your order. And at the end of the phone call if you heard her tell you "See you soon. Luhh you honey", then you've heard right. I would say that Thai Orchid is a bit overpriced and the portion size is decent. I know there are other Thai restaurants that give you large portion sizes but if you're looking for quality over quantity, then Thai Orchid is a must. Definitely a go to if you're looking to get your pad thai fix. I'm not sure I've had better else where and I've tried many places. The other noodle dishes here are good but they just don't compare to the pad thai. The customer service is one of the best, the food is fresh and most importantly, the restaurant is consistent. Thai Orchid is a small "hole-in-the-wall" spot which, in my opinion, is usually the best kind of place to find delicious, authentic food. With only 3 to 4 tables, take-out is always an excellent option. The service was excellent. The owner, who is also your server, is a gracious & absolutely delightful woman. It is obvious that she appreciates you as a patron. The classic Pad Thai with chicken was light & fresh, cooked to order & seasoned perfectly. The fried pork Thai dumplings and the crispy Thai vegetable rolls melt in your mouth. The house-made dipping sauces are both sweet & tangy with a hint of heat...perfect! Thai Orchid serves authentic Southeast Asian "street food" sized dishes-the perfect way to enjoy the simplistic & fabulous flavors of Thailand. Since they are smaller than "Americanized Asian" portions, it is the perfect "guilt-free" excuse to go ahead & indulge in an extra appetizer! I'd give this place more stars if I could. The prices are reasonable, the food is delicious. I love the little coconut crackers that get tossed in with take out. And the abundance of fortune cookies. Drunken Noodles are a go to for most of my office, but I have also tried the yellow curry and was in love with that. Also, the woman who works there is the SWEETEST! She does tell you she loves you. And when I called one time because I couldn't find my rice after all our take out got back to the office, she explained how she had packed all our items up, knew that my rice was in a separate bag. And when I told her it was probably downstairs in our kitchen and hung up to go find it - she called back to make sure it was there. She is the best! Good food and good customer service. Also, the price range options on yelp - $$ = $11-$30?? That's a big range. This is more like $11 for something like the drunken noodles. Noodles (Pad Thai and Pad See Ew) were passable, but both were very stingy portions and not spicy at all, even though we ordered them spicy. One could easily eat a plate of either and still be hungry. Curries (red, penang, massaman) were absolutely terrible. Possibly the worst I've ever had, including some abominable ones I've had in Europe. They all had the consistency of thin soup, and a pale 'contaminated' color. Vegetables in the curries had no flavor. Beware, the curries don't come with rice (!) so expect a surprise $1.50 charge per white rice. There is NO brown rice at this Thai restaurant. We tried several dishes as our party of 6 each ordered different things. The fried appetizers (crab rangoon, vegetables) were very greasy and strangely yellow. Well-executed fried food shouldn't be greasy. Sounds strange but true. Scary, dirty old bathroom off of the kitchen. 20-year old yellowed magazines in a rack above the toilet. If the lack of renovation is any indication of the quality of this restaurant, this is the last place in Rhode Island you should eat. I do not understand the locals 5-star ratings here. Perhaps it is the only Thai offering in the area? I was severely disappointed here. And just because the server calls you 'honey' at the end of every sentence she utters doesn't make the service any better. I had to ask for chopsticks and bowls twice, and my water glass was never refilled. Was really looking forward to a good ethnic food experience after 2 weeks of being on a tour bus eating salads and sandwiches. My penang vegetable curry was $10.95 plus $1.50 for white rice. A terrible value. In fact, I'm downgrading to 1-star as I continue to write. True Yelpers will avoid this place at all costs. read more

You know me, I'm always looking for a new good Thai restaurant. I have explored many of the places that Providence had to offer and I was looking out beyond the city's limit to see about the other places that people like. Don't ask me how my friend found this place but tucked away in Cranston, Thai Orchid is a little hole in the wall type place where there was a nice selection of your common thai foods. We didn't have a menu with us so we had to go there to order out. We ordered enough food to feed the 5000 so it did take them a few minutes to put our order together. I was sad to see that there wasn't any Lad Nah here but I asked and they were willing to make it for me. The food was excellent and very affordable! The family was very friendly calling both me and the BF "honey" and then giving us a gift prior to us leaving. Their curries and noodle dishes were superb. Given that I live in Providence and I have adopted the Rhode Island mentality, I am not sure how often I'll be able to make it down to this restaurant but locally this is definitely a good eat! read more

This place has excellent food. Everything was so fresh and the service was amazing. We decided to dine in. The seating area only holds a few people, so if you have a large group you will be out of luck. The older woman who works there is so nice and she is very attentive. Great service all around and the food was prepared very quickly. We started off with the Thai chicken rolls. Amazing. Sometimes you go to restaurants and they have some frozen rolls they heat up for you. They are pretty generic and all taste the same. Thai Orchid had amazingly fresh rolls and you could taste that the filling was homemade. For our dinner I had the country paid thai and my husband had the chicken and shrimp dinner. We happened to be approaching Providence around dinner-time, so we consulted Yelp and found this place. Parking appears limited to on-street out front, or possibly around the corner into some residential areas as well. The street this fronts on (Park Ave.) is semi-busy. Inside, the dining space is fairly limited. They have about 5 - 6 small tables and appear to do a larger share of their business as take-out orders. Still, there were some dine-ins, including our party. As others have stated, this is a true mom-and-pop operation. Mom takes your order and pop cooks it, from what I could tell. The owners are friendly. The food was fairly good; I received a hearty portion of Massaman curry + vegetables. I finished almost everything on my plate. My wife finished her dish as well, though my daughter left some of the veggies from her Panang. No one left hungry. They also have really odd cartoon paper place-mats, which is the only other characteristic I can recall. read more

Okay, so for a New York stating that this place is good, please take my word for it. Most Thai place here are overrated, so it nice to try something that was different. Providence is my college hometown, so I know all about the in's and out's of food there, but am always looking to for an adventure and happy my best friend brought me to one of his favorite restaurants out there. Upon arrival, I thought the place was small but wasn't going to hold them to that. Overseas some of the best food comes from a hole in the wall or even in someone's basement. What did it for me was the customer service. The family was very nice and friendly which I can appreciate being from New York once again. For appetizers, we ordered Chicken Wings and Crab Rangoon and for the main meal with had Pad Thai and Masaman Curry. Every came and great time and was delicious. The appetizers were normal the same as what you would get at a Chinese food restaurant in Rhode Island. However the main course was delicious, yes the curry was a sweet but not sweeter than any other Thai restaurant so that's fine in my book. The portions are based on the old America. To be honest, I left satisfied, I never want to leave a place feeling too full where I can't walk out of the place. The food held me down until dinner which was just what I was looking for. The family checked on us often and gave us KitKat's and fortune cookies with our checks. I love it. Question - Will I be back? Answer - You bet I will be.
