We dined in late on a Friday evening. The chef and all the waiters were so friendly. It is a smaller restaurant, but it is very clean. Looks like most costumers get their things to go. I wish I could order the surprise but I have too many allergies for that. We ordered a little bit of everything and overall were pleased and would love to come back. We got the trio (spring rolls, chicken pot stickers, and crab rangoons) and the chicken panang curry dip with panini bread for appetizers. The pot stickers were not very good flavor wise but everything else was amazing especially the crab rangoons and curry. For entrees we got the combo fried rice, drunken noodles, and the beef satay rice bowl. All were great except for the beef satay, the texture felt a little old. Are you a one and done? That's the first thing we were asked when we sat down. We said we were local and if it was good we'd return. And it didn't get better. Prices were higher than comparable thai restaurants in the area. Food is mediocre at best. Service was fairly rude. Credit card fee was added before tax! Change was not given so if we hadn't loudly reminded him it would have been a large unwarranted tip. Thai Neighbor used to be a neighborhood favorite. However the food was not as tasty as I remember it pre-pandemic. The food is more expensive and have reduced portion sizes. Thai Neighbor is a local gem! A secret to be shared. Chef Champ shares amazing family recipes with us and has fun with it! Due to my allergies, I stick to the side of the menu that most easily accommodates that. My husband loves the Chef's gone Crazy! It's always delicious and I've even been able to steal a couple bites. Thai Neighbor is a proudly locally owned restaurant on Chicago Avenue in Oak Park. Get a lot of classic Asian favorites as well as newer contemporary. Lots of good things for both meat eaters and vegetarians including noodles and more. At lunch is a good time because there's a few specials to choose from. It helped us narrow our choices because many things sounded good. The one I got was the Lunch Lo Mein. It's $11 for a pretty big portion that came in a bowl. Lots of flavor from the garlic sesame soy sauce. Got tofu as the protein. There was a good variety of mixed vegetables. She had the Green Curry. This smelled pretty good and it looked good as well. Besides noodles there's also rice based items. There's so much more to get but lunch is the best time with the cheaper specials. Fun chill kind of atmosphere and the owners are happy to be there for sure and eager to please their customers. It's not a big place but it's certainly a great local business to check out. I love that there's this experimental aspect to Thai Neighbor. We ate in and ordered a Wow Surprise. I love how the chef is very passionate about what he makes. They have a huge menu, and I love that if you order online, you can adjust heat level, add various ingredients... really customize to your liking. They also have great soft serve. I can't believe I've never eaten here, as we live within walking distance, but I'm also never working from home on a Monday with a house full of hungry college kids, home on winter break. My usual Thai place is closed on Monday, and I'd seen Thai Neighbor praised in the Facebook group: Takeout 25 Oak Park. Lots of gorgeous photos! So I gave them a call and my food was hot & ready for pick-up in 25 minutes. It took us less than 20 minutes to eat ALL of this food. It's gone. Pad See Ew, Pad Thai, soup, chicken fried rice, drunken noodles, and 3 sides. Everyone loved their meals!! Jordan and the other two staff members, I didn't catch their names, were very helpful in ensuring the whole order was peanut-free. We have a peanut-allergic kid and this is very important to us. Thank you, Thai Neighbor. Other tips: my husband said the drunken noodles had some heat to it, more than he anticipated, and he's used to heat. So perhaps order accordingly and ask to tone down the spice level. My vegetarian Pad See Ew with mixed vegetables was perfectly warm and sweet, just how I like it. Not too spicy at all. If I had not experienced it myself...... I wouldn't even believe this review. It's a small little spot with an open kitchen. You can actually see them cooking the food. For it not to be that big the customer service was HORRIBLE. Only one person cooks so I understand them being a little backed up. However, they were move concerned with the online orders coming in than the people in the actual restaurant. The waiter took my order (after a while) & told me I had to wait to place my drink order. He asked me to give him a minute. That minute turned into 20. I originally order the Chicken Zab Rice Bowl. The first time it came out it was flavorful, a bit salty but doable and cold. Seeing that there were no other customers dining in, so there wasn't a backup, I was confused as to why my food was cold. I informed the waiter and I could tell they didn't really like that. So, I decided to watch them my food the second time around seeing that it was an open kitchen. The chef started addressing me saying, "what, you don't want it? I'm putting it (the rice) in the microwave for you so it's extra hot." I then replied, "I haven't said again." I really didn't understand why he was addressing me or why he was hostile. They warmed the up TWICE before bring it out to me. In my opinion, that makes a difference in how your food tastes but okayyy.... I rolled with it. *Please keep in mind that I was there with two other people and I have driven about an hour to get there.* When my food came back out, it was disgusting. Nothing like the first dish they brought out. It was drenched in this sauce, like completely covering the rice. Almost looked like a soup so I push it away and decided I wouldn't say again. I continued with my conversation. Alex (the waiter) came to ask how it was and I told him, "It's extremely salt and wayyyy more sauce than last time but it's okay. Don't worry about." I remain kind and pleasant because things happen. I was even willing to still pay. Alex took the food and that was the end of that. Or so I thought. Maybe 10 minutes go by and I hear yelling. "Miss, Miss, you don't have to eat the food! Miss! Order something else!" I turn around thinking, "who's making a scene and why?!" It was the chef yelling at me! I was soooooooo embarrassed! By this time all five tables were full and everyone's eyes were on me. I thought that was THE MOST UNPROFESSIONAL interaction ever! I responded again with, "I haven't said anything. What's the problem." With my hands up because that how hostile and rude he was. I really didn't want any problem. I ended up ordering something else (which looking back I know I shouldn't have) because I didn't want to be disrespectful to their culture. Before I ordered I asked Jose (the other waiter) if I had offended the chef. If so, and he did not want to cook for me, I would not order anything. He said that Alex should have told me that the Chicken Zab Rice Bowl was tossed in a cold sauce but there were no problems. Could have fooled me but okay. I took his word for it. I ended up ordering a chef's speciality because this was my last chance to see what this spot was about food wise. What better way to do that than with a specialty, something the chef is supposed to be the best at making?! I order the Combo Fried Rice. It lacked favor, the rib-eye was so hard to swallow and chew, might I add. A complete waste of $20. I paid my bill and STILL left a 18% tip. I also had a lemonade that was pretty decent. I would give it like a 6.5/10. *Please keep in mind that I am a HUGE foodie. I eat food all over the city and all over the country. Strictly for fun. This is one of my favorite local spots. I prefer to eat at the restaurant then takeout simply because the food is so amazing when hot and fresh. Although I'm not vegetarian, there are a lot of vegetarian options for those who are. Since it's a small dining room I always call ahead to make sure there's room, or to make a reservation. We call on Wednesday and no one answers. Website says open. We live 3 blocks away so we walk over. They're closed. No note on door. Call a few days later to see if they're still closed. They pick up and say no they were just closed for the week. I told him there was no note on door and didn't know if they were permanently closed. He said no, what's your order. Food can be good but it can be bad. Tonight we call and they say 45 minutes. Drive over 45 minutes tonight in the rain. They have no record of order. This is bad management and poor staff attitude. The place was packed. People waiting for tables and pick up. No one was eating. They have Magic Jack for a phone system. Not even an answering machine or outgoing message. You get to know that no answer can mean they are closed or the line is busy. Only thing that will fix these problems is more reviews calling these people out. Adios. read more

I wish this place was there when I lived just down the street in 2004! I found it through Takeout25 and am really glad as I did. A hidden gem in Oak Park! Thai Neighbor is run by the ever amazing Champ who churns out dishes bursting with flavor. Each part of our trip was crispy and delicious and served with two dipping sauces. Next we had the red curry which paired perfectly with the rice and was loaded with tofu and vegetables. Finally the house duck which was my favorite. Discovered this place when I drove by it on the way to #1 Chop Suey a few days earlier. Looked interesting, so I decided to give it a shot. Perused their offerings and decided to try the Chive Dumplings. Three of them for $6.95 - they looked greasier than they tasted. Never had these before - they were pretty good. Also decided to try the shrimp egg rolls. Four eggrolls with a single tail on shrimp running through the entire piece - these were also $6.95. Glad I tried them though I don't think I'd order again - their menu had better appetizer options. As for the entree - Chicken Pad Thai... I ordered it medium spicy and they made it on the hot end of medium - but it was fine. Slightly smaller portion than what I'm used to and at $11.95 about $2 more than most Pad Thai entrees I've encountered. Overall, pretty good. The one thing I noticed when I stepped into the place to pick up my order was the spiciness in the air. Reminded me of a Thai cooking class I took years ago in which the five of us in the class had to step outside momentarily due to the ever so slight burn in our eyes from the peppers we were cooking. Same kind of "heat" was in the air at Thai Neighbor when I entered. Since the 1-2 Thai places I frequent are closed on Mondays, this place will be my Monday go-to for Thai food. The food is pretty pricey and the service isn't great. I had the fried salmon with sweet and sour sauce. The salmon was over cooked and tough. The fried shrimp Appetizer was pretty good, but my meal definitely wasn't worth 27 dollars for a carry out. The were much better when it was Thai Oak Park Express.
