I wanted to find good thai food in North County and so far this has been the best yet. A hidden gem with a couple other Asian restaurants next door, I decided to eat here and I'm glad we did. We walked in and was quickly seated. Our server was the owner Ca. He was so nice and had such a pleasant personality. The restaurant was clean and we ordered the following: Food: Pad Se Ew with tofu Panang with Chicken Sticky Rice First, I will tell you that not all restaurants offers sticky rice and so far in the San Diego County, this restaurant has the best sticky rice. It was not served wrapped in a plastic like other places and it was also not hard but very moist. The flavors of both of our dishes were on point. Starting with the pad se ew that was cooked to perfection with the right amount of seasoning. The panang was thicker than most places which reminded me of another restaurant down south SD. It went so well with my sticky rice. The prices are reasonably priced and cheaper than most thai restaurants I've been to. Definitely a gem and highly recommended if you're in the area. read more

The staff here are still as nice as the first time I had visited here, and for that they get that extra star! I came here today as starvin' Marvin! It is lunch time and I had to make it a quick bite so I just did the buffet lunch. The buffet had a few things that I enjoyed, even went back for seconds on the Panang curry. I wasn't a fan of the fried chicken and I love fried chicken. But, the others eating here seemed to go back for more. The desserts didn't cut it for me this time though. I did enjoy the Thai iced tea. I wouldn't mind coming back, but maybe order from the menu. read more

OH MY GOD. ORGASMIC. We had a cup of the tom kha soup, some of the best I've ever had. GET THE SPARE RIBS, ITS UNBELIEVABLE. 10/10 They fall off the bone and melt in your mouth. Due to the economy, and change in economics, we stopped eating out at restaurants. Today, we decided to go out to one of our favorite spots because the owners are always so warm, welcoming, and friendly. We were so sad to hear the owner (husband Cha) passed away. He made this restaurant such a pleasant place to visit. Such a sweet man. I will add that he would be happy to know the taste and quality of his food has remained the same. Wow!!! What a great place! The sign on the wall says it all - they're small, but they're VERY good. This was our first time here; we decided to walk in on a whim. I ordered the Spicy Fried Catfish (super crispy on excellent brown sauce with lime leaves and red peppers), my wife had the Thai BBQ Chicken, which was - no joke - nearly an entire chicken. It could easily have been dinner for both of us with leftovers; beautifully crispy skin with sweet chili sauce and sticky rice. The fact is, we over-ordered, but it was SO worth it. My favorite is Ugh everything! Jk! I love the patsiew with chicken, the padti with chicken is also yummy. My usual order is that with the chicken sauté & a large side of rice. My husband and I enjoy it so much! We live across town and never get to come to this side of town, so it was very nice. I never understood why so many people love this place. It's near my house, it's priced comparable to other Thai food in North County, sans Onnys. That's kind of where it ends for me. My friends would choose this place for dinner and grub like it was the cure for cancer, but to me you had a few options that I liked, but most of it was bland and I'm not talking heat because that's really a separate thing. The décor is warm and inviting, except when you eat in the middle of the place and it's empty. They need more background music, the staff is generally friendly, can be awkward in banter when clearly sometimes you just want to enjoy your meal quietly. I much prefer the turquoise booths. The acoustics are such that when it's slow you can hear everyone's conversation. The food takes a long time, even with their warning sign. It's a 2 fold issue. You really have no idea how many to go orders there are, so you'll be waiting and waiting and be 4th in line when you ordered in and they are understaffed. I highly recommend ordering for pick up to avoid all of this, but be warned some dishes are packed to go very well and others could use more attention on packing. Noodle, rice dishes they are good at, but the soups/curries even in the standard containers are always throw in there sloppy, making the seal weak. Pad See Ew is my favorite here, that dark rich soy sauce is great. Medium heat, peppers, broccoli, stand alone. Mad Kee Mao is also goodTheir fried rice is ok, but I'm pretty sure they use palm oil which gives it a weird aftertaste, a little more fish sauce goes a long way. Their brown gravy is bland and overslurried, no richness. Green curry is my favorite as it stays better warmed up the next day than the other curries. Satay is dry and overpriced. I've never eaten here for the AYCE menu. Papaya salad is good, but not good the next day. It's too convenient for me not to come here, but with the wait times I can't see eating in or straying from the things I know they do well to try the rest of the menu knowing what they are good at. read more

Thai Garden is my favorite Thai spot, and I recommend it to literally everyone who asks me for restaurant recommendations. The food is made with so much love and attention, it is well worth the wait. My go to is the curry, and the fried tofu. I have no idea what they do to that tofu but omg it is amazing, my friends and I have driven forty minutes just for the tofu before !! I have ordered from Thai garden one other time besides this one for which I'm writing this review, unfortunately my food was accompanied by a pool of cooking oil, super greasy and flavorless and despite being a level 1 for spice it was super spicy to the point it went in the garbage. One of my favorite places in town. Delicious food with great customer service. The team of people who work here make the whole atmosphere of the place worth waiting when it comes to the food. For this particular trip I tried the Tom Yum Seafood Combo soup (shrimp, mussels, fish), Tom Khan chicken soup, egg rolls and cream cheese wontons. It's obvious that everything that went into making these appetizers and entrees were fresh. They have a condiment glass caddy filled extra seasonings and chili toppings for more flavor. Gave it s second chance. Was doing to give 3 stars but updated with my 3rd visit to 4 stars. Ordered the pad see ew, tom kha soup, garlic tofu and cashew tofu this time. Tom kha soup was good and authentic as were the pad See ew and the cashew tofu. The garlic tofu was really kind of salty and I didn't like the flavor of it - just a bunch of soy sauce and garlic. Portion sizes are a little smaller than I would like. Didn't have any rude staff this time but still not my go to place for Thai. 9/11/20 Gave it a try for third time today; Ordered to go. Guy on the phone was really friendly - owner I think. He got my order all correct. Was friendly at check out too. Ordered tofu vegetable pad kee mao or drunken nooodles (tasted more like pad see ew with a pepper taste not so much spicy taste so was a little disappointed) and tofu vegetable pad Thai. Pad Thai was good and standard. 10.95 per dish. Also ordered spring roll appetizer 7.95. Size seemed ok today. Will have to try again in future. read more

Writing this from Thailand... Since I left Oceanside and moved to Thailand around a year and a half ago, I have often missed Cha's Thai Garden restaurant. Why is that? Because his food tops any restaurant that I have had over here. It may be because he is from Southern Thailand and that inspires his recipes, but even when I was travelling down south I still didn't experience anything as good as that little restaurant that I used to go to all the time in Oceanside. As I just read some of the reviews people have left, it is as if they expect a 5 star restaurant service for 8 bucks. This place is small and they have a small kitchen meaning you are going to wait for 10-15 minutes usually, so make sure you go with someone who you enjoy having a conversation with. I went to this restaurant for approximately six years before coming over here and I can honestly say I never had a negative experience. I think maybe a lot of it depends on a persons perspective of course. One time the waitress didn't speak good enough English to hold a conversation, but it was good enough to take an order. Of course I could choose to be outraged by this, or I could choose to enjoy the beauty of diversity and enjoy my delicious meal. The one constant thing throughout my 6 years of going to Thai garden was: 1. Cha, the owner was always very kind and he obviously loves what he does. 2. The food was always great, and I must have eaten here 100 times. The reason that it is better than what I generally have in Thailand is the quality. You can tell that he has some great ingredients available to him that might be a little harder or more expensive to come by here. That is why I wrote this exhaustive review from the other side of the world. I think Cha needs to move back home so I can come to his restaurant here. Try Thai Garden, it isn't only the best Thai food I have had in north county, it is the best Thai food I have had anywhere... Besides maybe one time in Japan at this place that was very similar...
