This is still our go-to delivery spot when people at work are craving Thai. My usual order is for the Crazy Noodles and a Tom Yum soup with extra veggies. They do a fantastic job of adding in the veggies. I just wish it would come in a bigger size! Haven't been to this place in years because my husband no longer goes to UIC and we used to go here religiously when his apartment was right on Taylor street aka two seconds away from Thai Bowl. This was his favorite thai place, and probably the only one that we knew of in the area at the time. It was definitely not my favorite. I thought everything about it was just okay. We liked how fast carry out was and on cold chilly nights in Chi-Town it definitely hit the spot, but was it oh em gee amazing I can't wait to have some more the next day? Absolutely not. I would always get the pad thai noodles which were average at best but the prices are low and the amount of noodles they give you was a generous portion, so they get a star for that. Service was always quick, so another star for that. And my husband's favorite thai dish was their green (spinach?) jade noodles with chicken. If he wasn't getting those jade noodles, then he must of been sick. Overall, a decent place for a quick fix if you live down the street. This is the best Thai food in Chicago! Hands down! I can never get enough of this place. It looks pretty cruddy and the service could be a lot better (sometimes they're a little rude). Another drawback would be that parking sucks. It sometimes takes a bit to find a spot. It is Taylor St afterall! But once you try they're food, it's so worth it. They're still in buisness for a reason-they're the best! They have boba drinks made fresh right there. They're best dish is they're beef curry. Only a few small tables on the side, and a little sketchy looking, but the food was great! I've been here a few times and my personal favorite items are the spring rolls, crab Rangoon's, and Green Curry Chicken with rice. Their green curry is very flavorful, and they have pretty generous portions. I'm not a big fan of their pad Thai, which seems a little bland to me. I think one of the dangers of yelp.com is that when you read a bunch of fabulous reviews, it makes an average or slightly negative experience seem worse than it really is. With that in mind, I am giving Thai Bowl three stars instead of two. Also because the woman who took my order was a stitch. However, even with explicit, turn-by-turn directions, the delivery guy still wandered around the neighborhood for twenty minutes before finding us. He went first to wrong building three blocks down and had their security guard screaming at me to come and get my food. By the time he got here, the food was lukewarm and a half hour past when we were told to expect it. I ordered the Pad Thai with beef and crab rangoons because this is the first time we tried Thai Bowl and those are my standard first-try items. The rangoons were good, but how hard are those to mess up? The Pad Thai was average to good. Everyone liked their spicy beef and curry. Still, that's the chance you take getting delivery. I'll try it again because the jade noodles piqued my interest. If so many other yelpers weren't fans, though, I wouldn't bother. EDIT: I was looking for a sushi place and parked in front of Thai Bowl. We decided to eat here because of the really nice, relaxing outdoor patio with garden. So, this is my first and probably last, time at Thai Bowl. I appreciate the attention of the staff: both the smiles and the stare downs. I can appreciate the hole-in-the-wall look and feel of the place although I cannot appreciate the prices of a polished, pretty restaurant in this hole-in-the-wall spot. I appreciate a menu just extensive enough, but I cannot get down with blah tasting food from the menu. I ordered the chicken satay app (approx. $5). 4 skewers of little chunks of chicken with a tiny container of cucumber salad and the same size container of oily peanut sauce. The look of the peanut sauce was off-putting and the salad was just okay. The chicken was moist, a little oily, and little flavor. The cucumber salad had a little zing once I got to the bottom where the water(?), err, some sort of liquid(?!), was pooled. Overall? Eh. If I were some folks and we couldn't decide where to eat and someone said, "Thai Bowl...?" I would say "No," even if we had to continue to deliberate for 45min. I second Nicole J. I loved this place last year. but that was when I had to eat dorm food much of the time, and that meant...being hungry all the time. So my rare chances to eat actual food were often extraordinary by comparison. Unfortunately, with my newfound ability to cook for myself, my opinion of Thai Bowl has plummeted. I did not forget my former love, however. I gave it chances. I got some chicken in peanut sauce with broccoli. It seemed like the oily components in the peanut sauce were trying to seperate. Who needs a civil war going on in their entree? I gave it some time, and tried again. This time there was a peculiar chunk of amalgamated gristle/bone/fat in my otherwise tasty order of green curry with tofu. Mind you, I'm not vegetarian. Sweet and sour chicken was really good, comes with rice, sweet and sour sauce, and crispy chicken nice and warm the way I like it. Crab Rangoon: better than a lot of places in my opinion, crunchy and the crab mix is good. comes with sweet and sour sauce as well. The waitresses: They're ok, then again they're old and slow so be nice. The boba: not a fan...g to joy yees, they're much better. If you're a UIC student you get a 10% discount and the minimum credit card payment is 10 bucks so just make sure if you oder one thing that you bring cash. Not many people realize that Thai Bowl caters, but let me tell you, it's worth working through the language barrier to provide students (especially freshmen who've never had Thai food before) with some yummy pad thai! The restaurant is definitely lacking in "atmosphere", but if it's a hot fresh bowl of pad thai you're looking for, you can look past the small cramped spaces and ugly decor. I got my Bachelor's degree at UIC, needless to say I know all about this hood...it's been 2 or so years since I've last dined at Thai Bowl and though the food is still mediocre, the service has drastically changed. Do you want to seat yourselves? Do you want to be ignored until someone brings you water 10 minutes later? Do you want to then wait another 10 minutes to place your order? Shockingly enough...once the food was out (another 10 minutes later) we were NEVER checked on again despite attempts at making eye contact with the three women working that night -- and no, it wasn't busy. I used to absolutely love this place. Reliable, good thai food. My pick up orders were always made very quickly, never any mix ups with orders, the staff very friendly, and their smoothies yummy. BONUS: The outdoor eating area is great if you're bored of the mainly indoor eating options on Taylor St. Unfortunately, I have not gone there in about a year, and I don't think I will be returning any time soon. Terrible service. Tasteless food. The girls that took my order were not pleasant. The food was flavorless. I had the beef fried rice which I had to drown in soy sauce just so I could taste anything. A while back, I had ordered from the Thai Bowl in Lincoln Park while at a friend's house nearby. I LOVED it...gave it 5 stars!!! There wasn't a delivery minimum at that location and they were really nice. I live in the loop, so the Lincoln Park location told me to call the one on Taylor. After waiting on hold and repeating my address several times for a FULL 5 minutes, they finally decided they would deliver to me. After I told her what I wanted, she said there's a $10 min, so I added another item, and then she waited until the very end to tell me there's a $5 delivery charge because I live far. Thai Bowl is good. Not great, not amazing, not mind-blowing... just good. It has all the standard Thai dishes and is pretty cheap. I enjoyed the food, but didn't love it. Where Thai Bowl really shines though is in its location. It's on Taylor but is a little south of where most of the restaurants are located so it isn't too crowded. Somehow, this place got a property with a fantastic courtyard. We sat outside to eat, of course, and it was the best part of the meal. (Of course, it also doesn't hurt that the weather was absolutely perfect.) The tables, chairs and tableware are all pretty shabby, but it was kind of charming. When we sat down I said, "I feel like I'm at a high school cafeteria." While waiting for our appetizer, my friend said, "I feel like I'm at a friend's house and their really nice mom is going to cook us dinner." I think those two quotes sum up the experience here really well. Sitting outside, eating decent food on a beautiful night while listening to cicadas chirp is pretty rare in this city. They give you a fair amount of food but compared to many other Thai places in the area- it's way overpriced. The interior is dingy- there's no public restroom and even the placemats are dirty. The pad Thai is scrumptious, the lard nahr is yummy and the sweet and sour chicken is so crunchy that I only crave it from there. The added on Boba fruit smoothies are great. You watch as they pour huge amounts of fresh fruit into the blender and they usually serve it with a large chunk of fruit. Try the banana dessert. Out of this world. SERVICE People are always nice. This used to be my old 'hood, so I've been a patron over the past few years. Stopped by and picked up dinner on the way to a friend's house. A tad disappointed. The pad thai is probably one of my least favorites of the numerous thai restaurants taking over the city. This place used to be my favorite for crab rangoon, I was utterly shocked when I opened the box and instead of the typical sweet chili sauce that is provided (and yes I have ordered it via carryout before), I was given the generic packages of sweet and sour sauce. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my old favorite shrimp fried rice (and I don't normally like fried rice) is still good. From what I remember on past trips, service is up to par, not excellent but nothing too alarming. There really isn't much to say about the interior, it's a bunch of high and low tables arranged for maximum capacity with some pictures in Ikea frames on the walls. Pretty good food here, the portions were amazing, but my main dish didn't blow me away. I think it may have been more of my choice than the food there in general, and the crab rangoons with jalapenos were really good. Came here for lunch with a fellow classmate. When we walked in, we sat ourselves because the place seemed understaffed, but it was pretty busy, probably because it was lunch time. When we were finally greeted, the woman was very nice. I ordered the duck pad Thai, which I really enjoyed! This place isn't like a nice sit down Thai restaurant, but it is good for students in a rush or take out. I'm not sure if it's just me but it just feels kind of sexist/racist in there. And mind you, there were only four tables occupied. The quality of the food is alright. If you hit them during a busy hour, the quality of the food might not be as good. This Thai Bowl doesn't give you tea while you wait for your carry-out nor does this one have a jar of fortune cookies that you can take a few out of along with your order. I'm Thai and my parents make the BEST food in the world....BUT...I love this place. The patio is super cute and when I don't feel like leaving my house, I'll call for delivery and they are here in no time! I love their Pad-See-Ewe. It's total comfort food for me. There is a trick to getting authentic yet delicious vegetarian food at any Asian restaurant: Get your Asian friend to order for you! My friend, who speaks Thai, always orders for us and we end up with massive quantities of yummy dishes. Their Basil Fried Rice is the best I've had. They also make a fantastic Green Curry and Veggie Pad Thai. I know that Pad Thai has the ability to taste bland without fish sauce. But somehow, this restaurant makes it work! I love their food.....especially their appetizers. I would eat there more often but they never answer their phone. You can call for nearly an hour and they won't pick up. Either I have to physically go to the restaurant and place my order and then wait 20-25 minutes for it to get prepared or I just go somewhere else. Found out the reason today. Ok I always put a lot of input into my reviews. I will give you always my honest opinion. I have not had a ton of experience dinning in Thai restaurants. Why you might ask ? Simple ! No need to go anywhere else to satisfy my taste buds. I was turned onto this place from a work friend back in 2004. It is on Taylor street which is known for some very good restaurants. So from the outside it doesn't look like much. Entering the restaurant you might ask what the hell am I doing in here ? The inside needs some renovations for sure . Kind of run down to say the least. But you are in for a real treat trust me. I have tried a few of the different dishes which is clearly visible by the large pictures of the food hanging on the wall. My favorite and a real dish to die for is the Thai bowl mixed. This is the bomb ! The portion is a good size and has more than enough chicken , beef and shrimp. I have had this probably at least 10 times now and it seem to get better each time . The staff is decent but not overly friendly. The garlic and basil chicken is also very good . Not a ton of seating and does get a little crowded. Parking is on the street so prepare to feed the meter as they do ticket in the area. Not the ideal place for a date night or to impress for a first time but the food is very good. Highly recommend. Take in mind that it doesn't take much to please me though.
