This is the go to Thai spot in Arlington. I love this place. Pad Thai level 2 perfect all the time til they start knowing me then theu slowly kicked up the spice now im eating level 5 spice. Spicey with flavor. Not just burning you. My all time favorite is the Pad Won Sen here. Perfect flavor, some place too much fish sauce, some place too salty. I have never written a bad restaurant review unless it had to do with the service at the restaurant. You order food, it's not great, you just move on and never go back to that place. But the lunch we had at Thai Basil Leaf today was so awful that I feel compelled to say something. We spent $50 (not counting tip) for Massaman curry that had a weird sweet/salty taste, contained almost no pork except for several very tough slivers, and a host of oversized and underdone potatoes. It was just awful! MY husband's coconut soup was thin and had huge slices of mushrooms that really needed to be much smaller, fork ready size. His pad thai, which the waitress told us was their most popular dish, was probably the best of the lot, but it, too, was not very good and aspired to be average. And the chicken fried rice! It was just...well...tasteless. Just absolutely gray and limp and tasteless. I asked for the level of spiciness to be "2." I should have asked for 10. Maybe then there would have been some flavor! The food was really just terrible and we left feeling very sad that we had spent $50 on it. We used to go to Taste of Thai in Arlington, but it changed hands and the new owners never lived up to the cooking skills of their predecessors. We are running out of Thai restaurants here in this city! But if, like us, you want to sample some Thai food in Arlington, try to stave off the impulse until you find a Thai restaurant somewhere else. This was not a good lunch. read more

First off, I would rate Thai Basil Leaf 3.5 stars, but since that is not an option, I round up. We went here for dinner on a weeknight since we were in the area. We were seated right away as the restaurant was mostly empty at the time (it was early for dinner). Our waitress was friendly and not overbearing, which was nice. We ordered the spring rolls to start, and they were really good. A bit too much cabbage, and said cabbage also needed to be chopped a bit finer, as it resulted in strings of cabbage coming out of the roll when one bit into it. The flavor was good, though, and they were definitely hot and fresh. I ordered pork pad thai for my meal and my husband got the yellow curry with chicken. We also ordered the ginger shrimp because I wanted to have options, lol. I ended up eating all of the ginger shrimp and taking home the pad thai, which was a little bland. The ginger dish had lots of umami, but was a tad on the salty side. Husband liked the sauce so much he put it over his rice after he finished his curry. The curry was good, but lacked the depth of flavor one expects from a Thai curry. We also each could have gone up a notch on the heat, they seem to lean towards less spicy, which is unusual for a Thai restaurant. We finished with the custard and sticky rice, which was super yummy! A great way to end the meal. Overall we felt that the value for the money was ok, as Thai Basil Leaf is a little less expensive than other Thai restaurants, but I still think it should have been a couple dollars less per item, as the portions were smaller (except on the pad thai) and the quality was a little less. We probably won't be back since we don't live in that area, but if we did live around there we might come here occasionally. read more

I kept seeing this place when driving by and always wanted to stop in and try it. It was not too crowded when i came in, the service was very quick and my waitress was very kind. I ordered thai tea and two appetizers; fried tofu and shrimp lettuce rolls. The peanut sauce was delicious, tofu was a bit oily out of the frier but still very good and the sweet chili sauce they came with was also good! It was a takeout order and I likely should have checked before leaving. The taste of lemon grass was so overpowering that I could not eat it. And they must have forgotten the chicken - I found 2 small miniscule pieces but it was loaded with tofu. No curry flavor whatsoever. The spring rolls were an add on but so greasy and it was nauseating. I wanted to like this place because of the reviews. We love to support the locals and have been meaning to try this place for a while. We are so sorry we didn't go sooner - what a find! We especially love that we can bring a bottle of wine. The ambiance is really nice, with flowers on the table, newish furniture, gorgeous walls, pretty curtains, NO clutter, and overall very clean. One server was working the front of the house alone but doing a decent job. She was polite and efficient, even with several tables of diners and a few to go orders popping in while we were there. The fresh salad roll was crunchy, and the peanut sauce thick and rich and delicious. We ordered a cup of the Tom Kah soup and were surprised by the size of the dish. The soup was very good. We ordered a spice level 3 (scale of 5) which was too hot for me but my husband thought it was perfect. The two curry dishes were also very good with sizable portions and thoughtful presentation. Rude, showed up 45 min till close to eat at the establishment , wanted to try this establishment from the reviews, and they basically said no... To go orders only., There were 2 tables (3 people) sitting waiting for food but the cashier refused to seat us ... I get if we show up 10 or 15 min before close that they can close the front of the restaurant but we were 45 min prior to closing... I caught the owner just looking at us through the kitchen window as we stood there for 5 minutes waiting to be seated... Why didn't he come out while we waited to be seated We waited for the cashier to finish taking a phone order , 5 minutes, to be seated. That's when he dropped the No we are not going to seat you... Not recommending this place because the team wanted to go home early, basically saying they don't care about serving, and I bet that reflects how they care about the quality of the food when they are so focused at closing the restaurant down early. I was highly satisfied with my lunch today! I have traveled to Thailand, so I am always on the hunt for the authentic flavors of Thai food. Chicken pad Thai has always been one of my favorites, but I think I have a new love for, pad kee mao or commonly called, "drunken noodles"! Pad Kee mao is full of noodles, fresh veggies, basil, and meat. The ingredients are covered in a savory sauce that is slightly sweet. They make it with wide, flat noodles (drunken noodles) and lots of fresh/crunchy veggies. Veggies included: carrots, bell pepper, broccoli, tomato, and onion. They are generous with their basil hence the name of the restaurant. My dish had plenty of big pieces of fresh basil! I love the pop of flavor basil added to any dish! I also tried their pad Thai, which was just as enjoyable. Everything was Super good. This place exceeded my expectations. I will be back for sure! I'd been craving Thai food so we decided to get takeout from here the other day. It's been a minute since I've had Thai Basil Leaf, so I decided to give them my business! I tried to order a few new things to spice it up (since I almost always get red curry whenever I eat Thai). I ordered the Papaya Salad ($10) which was papaya, tomato, green beans, peanuts, lime juice, thai chili, and garlic. Um, yum! Why don't I get this more often? It's was crisp, bright, fresh, acidic, and paired well with my curry! Yes, I got curry. But hey, I have to eat gluten free and curry is a safe option for me! I went for green instead of red, however! I got tofu as my protein, and it had bell peppers, green beans, eggplant, bamboo shoots, and basil. And coconut milk, of course. It had a great heat and a ton of flavor. I had plenty and ate all my rice with some curry leftover for another day. $11! Jon got crispy spring rolls ($6) and pad see ew ($11). Not gluten free but certainly looked and smelled delicious. It was plenty of food, people. And really satisfying for a decent price, and packaged well for delivery. We'll be ordering from here again for sure. read more

It was tasty and flavorful and moist - but it had a weird chargrilled taste that really reminded me of a backyard barbecue - one that has had a little bit too much petroleum poured all over it. Yes, the dish tasted of petroleum. Ew. Lol. It's probably just whatever the shrimp was charbroiled in, but it kind of put me off a little bit. Barbie really liked it though - but then she likes a lot of things. Ahem. I also got a Thai Iced Tea, and it was okay. The prices are pretty decent here, and considering the fact that it's popular with non-Asians and Hipsters - as you can tell from how many people have reviewed it - the value is not bad. Thai Basil Leaf, your food is good. I really do like it. Unfortunately, your service is not. + 1 for the food. Chicken Pad Thai and Panang Curry were pretty on point. Nice portions, not too salty. Level 3 spiciness was exactly what I envisioned - slight burn, but nothing to make you sweat. + 1 for the price. On average, $10-$13 per plate is expected. Portions are fairly big so you won't get hungry. + 1 for relative cleanliness. Restaurant is not big but it's pretty well kept. Since I only had water to sip on for about 2 hours before I got food, bathroom trips were a must. Nice to know they keep their bathrooms in decent shape. - 2 for service. Oof. It took us 10 minutes to get anyone to notice us when we walked in, 1.5 hours to get our food after we ordered and another 15 minutes to get our checks. And it wasn't like other tables were getting food and we weren't. NOBODY got their food. So everyone coming in at 6 PM didn't leave until 8:30 PM or later. This place isnt the same anymore. I used to frequent here when i went to UTA to the point that the previous owner knew me. She got the best pad thai despite me trying it everywhere i go. She told me she even won a pad thai competition! I just moved back and went here again. They dont have a lunch menu anymore. The table isnt cleaned well, there were some crumbs and fuzz on both tables i sat at. I ended up staying at the second one the tomyum is very sour. Usually they're on the sour side but this was very very sour. The old tomyum had clear broth while what i got was a cloudy orange one like it's from a paste. Their pad thai also change. It's lacking something that i cant tell but it isnt as good anymore. I didnt finish mine. The waiter was nice and attention. What really told me this place went downhill was the fly. I had one on the glasses near me and another one kept flying around. There was another insect too but idk what it was. It's a pity read more
