Dr. Tran is kind and friendly. She has great energy and a bubbly personality. She knows how to communicate with kids to make them feel at ease. My daughters had a great experience seeing her. Not very professional in my opinion. They all seem like they've never worked in customer service before. If I could give them 0 stars I would first off the facility was very dirty and had an odor I can only describe as sewage and rotten eggs. I completely agree on every point with Mary T's review of this place. Sadly I've been coming here for the past 3 years because I haven't taken the time to find a new place that's close to my house & that also accepts my insurance. Mary's review really reminded me of everything I dislike about coming here. Here's my input: 1. New Receptionists each time I've been in here. Seems they have a high turnover with their employees. 2. I found it odd and was unsettled that they don't use typical sanitary practices with their equipment. Every place I've ever gone to (even at Walmart & places that are located in not so desirable parts of town), they clean their equipment with alcohol and use tissues on their eye exam equipment. 3. Their customer service and Customer Care is non-existent. I've noticed they speak to you with rude undertones, and if you don't make instant decision on what they recommend, they basically don't want to waste anymore time with you. Every year I've been here, they ALWAYS pressure you on purchasing eyeglasses telling you you will want to take advantage of their "Special" they are having, as if it's a limited time special and once you walk out the door, the special is no longer good. It gets ridiculous how many times you have to tell them NO when you just came in for an eye exam for contacts, not glasses. 4. I do get reminders in the mail from their office when it's time to come in for my yearly exam, which I like. I made my appointment over the phone and gave them my info. When I came in for my last visit, they should have seen I was already a customer. Instead the receptionist set me up in their system as a brand new customer. They are very strict with their records requiring your social security #, and want to take a photo of you that pulls up with your account so they can verify it's you when you come in. When I advised I didn't want to give out my SSN again or take another photo as it should already be on file, the receptionist treated me as if I was an idiot, and made it seem like it was an act of congress to change what she did and find my original account. 5. On my last visit, after getting so much pressure from the Doctor to dilate my eyes, I finally caved and agreed. They knew I came alone, and once they did their test, they immediately sent me on my merry way without giving me time to let me eyes somewhat get back to normal so I could see nor did they give me any sort of disposable sunglasses so I could drive myself home. It's that time of year again to get my contact prescription re-done & I will definitely be looking for a new eye doctor. read more

I asked several times if they do diabetic eye exams and they said oh yes sure. so I booked the appointment for my mother fill out paper and when I took her their they said they can't do it. I really enjoyed my visit to this office. The office staff was friendly, and since I was a walk-in, they gave me realistic expectations for the wait time. Dr. Kurjee was friendly and explanatory. In fact, I think this is the first time I have ever had a doctor actually show me the difference between what my current presciption is and what she was recommending. Taking that extra step was really informative for me. When picking out my frames, they were helpful and made sure I understood my insurance coverage. And I picked out the best frames ever! As a first time patient back in July, I was the problem patient where I thought I wanted to change my contacts to something more economical, only to find out nothing was as comfortable as what I've always used. Dr. Shulman was very patient and tried every pair of trials she had available over the course of about a week, and I ultimately went back to my regular ones. She was very nice about it and was never unwilling to get me what I thought I wanted. The only thing I agree on as a previous poster stated is about the eye dilation. I too had in a trial set of new contact lenses for the examination and the dilating drops were put in my eyes while I still had the contacts in. When my eyes were dilated enough, I was told to put my contacts back in, but they had been in the whole time. I'm not the eye professional, so i didn't question it. Unfortunately, I had already thrown away the original pair i wore in and they were out of my prescription in trial contacts, so I had to go home with the dilation solution in my trial contacts. Stupid me waited until I was out of contacts to go to the doctor, so I had to wear them like that for over a week until my script came in. Even with the dilation issue, which is no big deal for me, I liked Dr. Shulman enough to send my husband to see her. He's very hard to please, and had no complaints. My husband and I have been in a couple of times now for pick up of glasses and contacts and the staff has always been helpful and friendly. read more

Ugh, this place drives me insane. I really really try to avoid them like the plague. However, I am not able to do so being that they are in network with my vision insurance. They make up stories about my vision insurances having holds on them that I can only release however when I go to Walmart who is out of network, they are able to release the hold. You go in there wanting to throw money at them and they turn you away. I have to find a new place that is in network with my vision! read more

TSO supposedly stands for "Texas State Optical" but I think it more accurately stands for "Totally Sucky Optometrists". This is the second TSO location I've been to in as many years, and after this experience I won't be returning to any location in this chain. If you want careless, inattentive, and unsanitary service and a hard sell on buying both glasses and contacts then this is the place for you. If you want to feel confident in the service that you receive, I'd recommend going elsewhere. The highlights of my most recent visit include: 1. At first I thought the optometrist was silently laughing to herself about something, but later I realized she was constantly suppressing a cough. She seriously sounded like Delores Umbridge from Harry Potter. She did this several times in my face during the examination. I'm sure that's sanitary. 2. They don't use paper coverings on the eye exam machines and I didn't see them wipe down the chin or forehead cradles before or after I used them. Again, I'm sure that's sanitary. 3. The optometrist mumbles and gets cross with you when you don't follow the directions that you didn't hear because she was mumbling and coughing. 4. I agreed to have my eyes dilated for a more thorough examination. I had in my freebie set of new contact lenses for the examination. The optometrist put in the dilating drops while I still had the contacts in. After a while, my eyes hadn't dilated enough so I had to wait for an extra twenty minutes. Finally, my eyes dilated and she examined them, then told me to put my contacts back in. I told her they had been in the entire time. How the hell did she miss them when she was standing one inch away from my face with a bright light, coughing into it??? She told me to take them out and throw them away because they'd probably absorbed some of the dilating drops. Not only was that a pretty damn careless mistake on her part, but they were out of my prescription in trial pairs of contacts so I had to put my old ones back in. 5. I got the hard sell on getting a new pair of glasses from one of the people working the front desk. They were running a special and blah blah blah. I told her I wanted a few minutes to think about it, and she literally scowled at me and walked away without a word. Customer service much? 6. As I was checking out, the same surly girl who works behind the desk asked me to step back from the desk so she could take my picture for my file. Excuse me, what? No, I refused. The optometrist was also behind the desk and she said it was to prevent insurance fraud. Look, lady, I've been to dentists, endocrinologists, dermatologists, gynecologists, pediatricians, and other physicians and I have NEVER been asked to have my picture taken, so no, I'm not letting you take my photo. This isn't even standard practice at other TSO locations, so you can go ahead and flag me in your Department of Eyeland Security computers or whatever . . . and add paranoid and intrusive to my list of complaints about this place. 7. Despite the crap service, I decided to get the deal on the new set of glasses. I got a call a week later to pick them up. I went in to the office and my new glasses were nowhere to be found. They did have my contacts ready, however, which took them fifteen minutes to find. The guy behind the desk (who is the only person in that office who seems to know he's doing) said he didn't know how the mix up had occurred because they have the glasses and contacts info in two separate systems. I think it might be because this is a completely disorganized and careless location staffed by surly mumblers with allergies. And those are just the highlights, folks. This is the Cliff's Notes version of my experience. The most terrifying part is that this is consistent with the level of care I received at the location in San Marcos, practically one hundred and fifty miles to the northwest. How does this chain stay in business with the bar set so low??? Needless to say, I can't recommend anyone go to a TSO location. For anything. Ever. read more

Not sure how old these reviews are and why the rating is so low. We have been coming here for the past few years because we have been following Dr. Tran. Dr. Tran provides exceptional service and makes sure that we fully understand what is going on with our eyes and what we can do to improve on certain ~bad habits~. She is thorough and provides great service even though she looks young, don't be fooled, she's got quite a bit of experience. The other staff, like Selena, were equally as welcoming and took care of us right away. Both myself and fiancé were taken care of within an hour and a half and that includes pre-exam, actual exam, contact fitting, and billing. I've read some of the reviews about sanitation and I have never experienced that. They always clean the machines before I am asked to touch them. I have never come in as a walk-in so I cannot review on that aspect but I am the type that prefers to have an appointment set up anyways. The restroom is also always neat and clean. read more

I would give them no stars if I could. This office is very rude and extremely unprofessional. They have no customer service skills and could care less about you. I went in with my son to pick up his glasses when they came in and they just handed then to me. Didn't even bother fitting them to his face. Got NIKE glasses and some generic case and not even a cleaning cloth to go with it. They literally said "here you go". First visit to TSO Fry Rd was in 2018, I brought my granddaughter in for an eye exam before the new school year. As a new patient, we were unsure of what to expect. The staff was helpful but not very polite and the frame selection needed an overhaul. However after meeting Dr. Shulman, the subpar lobby experience became secondary for me. She was very professional, thorough, kind and caring. She calmed my granddaughter's fears while educating her on proper eye care. This year, we returned for the annual check-up. Once again, the staff was helpful but this time surprisingly polite. The frame selection is "blah" and still yet to be desired. But no worries though, Dr. Shulman is still amazing... and makes the drive from Atascocita TX - oh, so worth it! read more

Save yourself the headache and go somewhere w/ more integrity. What a shameful experience! Called to see if they would accept a "walk in" which they graciously said YES. Half way through rush hour, I called for them to pull my insurance. And I was told, they won't accept me as a walk in and the woman didn't who I talked to and bla bla . Long story short, after holding for another few minutes. Their holiness approved of my presence. All set.... WRONG! I get there, and they don't accept my insurance!!! But I just freaking asked your incompetent employee if you accept my insurance. (They accept my insurance but for Katy employees only). An hour in traffic wasted. They never called me to pick up my contacts, I called them 1 month after my visit to check on the status since I had been wearing the same 2 week disposable contacts for over 1 month. Their response was that they did not have my phone number? Mind you they called me before my appointment to remind me. So I picked them up and they only ordered 6 months worth instead of 12. Took another 2 weeks to get the second batch. Never again! read more

Always a great experience when we visit the office. My husband and I have been patients here for a couple of years, wouldn't go anywhere else. My 6 year old son had his first visit two days ago and was so comfortable throughout the whole visit, and he already has his glasses. I highly recommend this office for all of your eye-care needs. This place should not be allowed to operate and the staff should just wear a ski mask so that people will know that they are about to get robbed by the person behind the counter. I always call to be sure of all my charges so I know what Im getting myself into and also to verify that they accept my insurance. This place accepted my insurance and told me I had a co-pay of $25 but my insurance would cover the next $130 for any associated fees. I went in thinking I had all the facts till after the exam was done and it was time to pay. These people basically told me that because I was not buying contacts from them that I now have to pay out of pocket for my fitting $90 when I know that it's definitely covered by my insurance. These thieves pick and chose what my insurance was going to cover because I was not buying my contacts through them. I paid their $123 and told them I never want to see them again and hate the fact that I have to do a follow up. I can only hope that who ever reads this decides to go somewhere else. I really don't like writing this bad review because the doctor was awesome but unfortunately its being run by thieves. Trust my review and please heed the warning. Go some place else.... I will be publishing this bad review in as many places as I possibly can because I hate when the bad guy wins. read more

Doctors and Staff are great. Very helpful and kind. Got contacts and glasses. They make sure our contact fit well and our comfortable. Any problems and they will find the ones that will work for you. "Totally Superior Office" is the term I would use for this TSO. The optometrist here and the store itself are the finest that I have ever experienced. The doctor was very attentive, knowledgeable, on-time and effecient. She went out of her way to make this a very pleasant experience and she really knows what she is doing. Also, the staff is terrific. In my opinion, this is the best TSO in the group and the place to go if you want great care by a very competent doctor who really cares about you. The other review is totally wrong and biased. The place is very sanitary, and is almost new. The doctor is easy to understand and explains what she is doing. There is absolutely no hard sell at all, but they do want to make sure that you get what you need. I would definitely recommend this TSO. read more

Appointment was 1130am,didn't get eye exam completed until 130pm. Then around 2pm they were finally ready for me to pay the bill. They said it would be 206 dollars, because the contacts chosen weren't part of the $25 dollar exam fee. Are you serious, the procedure to do contact fitting doesn't change because I was looking at a different contact type. Plus my insurance covers $125 dollars toward contacts, but they wanted me to pay full price for exam and charge my insurance. I was prepared to buy glasses and additional lenses(not with insurance) plus two different sets of contact packages. Basically I would have spent an extra 5-600 dollars if they would have eaten $61 of the ridiculous $86 contact fitting fee, not to mention a customer that would havee returned next year. Instead I will never set foot or spend another dime in their establishment. I used this insurance the previous two years with Wal mart and didn't have this type of issue. One of the ladies said we aren't Wal mart, no kidding, maybe you should strive to be more like Wal mart, they understand having repeat customers is worth more than $60 based on a 5 minute contact fitting, that basically required me to put in a pair of contacts and read the chart one more time. They also tried to take scan of my eyeballs with a machine the doctor had for an extra 45 dollars. They were up selling this hard, I can only assume the doctor got taken by a good salesman and is trying to recoup cost through her customers. I wouldn't recommend my worse enemy to go to this horribly mismanaged company. read more

I just read the other two reviews for TSO in Katy and I am totally shocked! I see Dr. Schulman when I go and can guarantee I will continue to go to her for all of my eye care needs. Let me tell you why. First of all, I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes for my appointment, which is unusual for any doctors office. The staff at the front have been the same people every time I have gone in, except for a new young man at the front, who I found out is studying to be an optometrist. As far as the "unsanitary" comments go, I saw them wipe down the equipment with an alcohol pad before and after I used them. I had no concerns about there space being unclean at all. Here is the main reason I will continue to go to Dr. Schulmen and TSO. Dr. Schulmen recommended, like I'm sure she does to every patient, that I get my eyes dilated and maybe get my retinas checked with their special machine they have there. She informed me of the cost of the retinal exam and in no way pushed me into it, but because I am severely near sided, she definitely recommended it. I agree to have it done, and boy am I glad I did! She immediately noticed an abnormality on my scan and told me her suspicions and personally called a retina specialist and got me an appointment for the next day. She seemed very concerned for me and told me to let her know how it all goes. It turns out that I had a detached retina, which I had zero symptoms for. Had Dr. Schulmen not found it when she did and got me into see the specialist, there is a very good chance I would have gone blind in my left eye. I ended having to have two surgeries to fix it, but if it hadn't have been caught so early, things would have been much worse. So basically, I will continue to use TSO for my eye care not just because of the friendly staff and short wait times, but because Dr. Schulman literally saved my vision!
