We went for dinner at the newly reopened Texas French Bread and it was lovely! The menu is a rotating seasonal menu, which is my favorite type of menu. The restaurant itself feels new, open and inviting. The staff were all very nice and warm. To eat we started with fresh sourdough & butter, which isn't on the menu as it's complimentary. I think this is such a nice touch. Who doesn't like sourdough & butter! It was delicious. We got the mezze, which was perfectly cooked and seasoned. I got the gnocchi with beef cheeks which was delicious, very well balanced. My partner got the trot and was please with it as well. Overall I'm glad Texas French Bread is back! This is my first visit since their reopening. Despite the three stars, not my last. I still find it worth trying again. The good: -Prompt, attentive service. -Cleanliness. -Ambiance: The new space is bright and airy. High ceilings, unfussy decor, seating. -Coffee! Anderson's coffee in nice large mugs, and it's very good. Free refills! -The french fries- I could write an entire paragraph just about how delicious these are. Easily the best french fries in all of Austin, and yes, this is counting Hyde Park's. Next time I think I'll order 2 servings! -My companion loved the fried plantains, served with sour cream. These are not the crispy, savory, salty plantains. These are the ripe, sweet ones. -The blackcurrant scone was good. They had a variety of other pastries and cookies. Room for improvement: -The bread on both our sandwiches was gummy, too chewy, not fresh tasting. This was puzzling because we arrived at 11:45 AM so we doubt we were served stale bread? I don't know if next time we'll just request a different bread instead, or give this another try. -We both ordered the veggie sandwich. We agreed that while decent. it was unremarkable. It really needs some oomph. I can easily think of at least three places that have a veggie sandwich that you will knock your socks off even if you're a meat-eater. I wanted Texas French bread to be such a place. Either it's not the same veggie sandwich will remember from over a decade ago, or our taste has evolved. -The salsa was something I remembered and dreamed about returning to. While ok, it's a different salsa altogether. -Their daily sup rotates, so you're out of luck if you were hoping for soup and sandwich and they only have chicken tortilla, as it happened today. This is Austin, would love a reliable vegetarian soup any random day of the week, without having to plan around it. I hope the gods at TFB read this and care enough to fulfill my requests. Texas French Bread provides pastries to a number of local bakeries. So, when I saw their sign, I was excited to try pastries from their bakery. The bakery is medium-sized with quite a lot of natural light flowing in. At the time, close to lunch time, the bakery was packed with people. Texas French Bread is known for their fresh breads, pastries and farm-to-table dishes. It is an long-standing, family owned business dating back to the 80's. Of course, their breads are what Texas French Bread is known for, hence the name. The bread is fresh, buttery and enjoyable to eat. The turkey sandwich was shareable and enjoyable to eat. The food and ambiance are great, but the dinner service doesn't make a lot of sense: we drove a significant distance to meet friends for a 7:30 pm reservation on a Saturday night, but the service was surprisingly rushed, and as the 9:30 closing time drew near, the staff began cleaning the restaurant while we were still seated, eating, and enjoying the bottle of wine the (awesome) sommelier helped us select. It seems unreasonable to offer such a late reservation for a Saturday-night pricey meal if the restaurant wants everyone gone by 9:30. The pressure detracted from the experience. read more

TFB has risen from the ashes to a beautiful, warm, welcoming space that encourages conversation while enjoying good food. I ordered a drip coffee and a breakfast sandwich which comes with frites. This is my new fave breakfast spot. All of the baked goods we had were absolutely divine and the fries that came with the breakfast sandwich were mouth-wateringly delicious. There are three different cinnamon rolls so we asked the server for her choice and she said the sugar topped with no hesitation; we were not steered wrong. Cute little bakery truck in wampus! Got a seasonal strawberry shortcake latte, jalapeño cheese croissant and breakfast tostada. The latte was okay, nothing exceptional but still good. I enjoyed the pastry but it felt a bit too heavy halfway in and buttery. As for the breakfast tostada, it was good! I would say overall everything was okay given the price. I received a $5 gift card for aTexas French Bread for placing 1st in the 10- mile Run for the Water race. A friend also won and gave me his $5 gift card. I had never gone to that restaurant because I don't eat bread and thought there was nothing for me there. But I decided to check it out today after my run. I was very hungry and wanted to see what I could get for $10. I knew the restaurant had burned Dom several years ago. I arrived there to find it was now a food truck in a charming yard with ample tables and chairs. I surveyed the menu and inquired as to the gluten-free options. The server recommended yogurt with homemade organic granola, blueberries and honey. That sounded great to me! It was only $8.00. The granola was crunchy and not sweetened, to my liking. The yogurt was also plain and unsweetened. It's rare to find unsweetened yogurt and granola. The blueberries were fresh, and the hint of honey topped it off. It was delicious and filling! Full list of ingredients: organic rolled oats. canola oil, honey, almonds, walnuts, raisins, dried cranberries. Since I had a little money left on the gift cards, she offered me a small drip coffee. I offered to add a few dollars, which I had in the car, but she said it was okay to help myself tomorrow the coffee. Another plus: their utensils are sustainable and compostable. The perfect place to have a morning pastry and coffee! It's only just opened, but it was packed on the Sunday morning I went. The line to order was also quite long but moved at a fair pace. I ordered a ham and cheese croissant that was absolutely delicious and an iced oat milk latte that was also good. It's so pretty on the inside, I can definitely see myself coming again and doing some work while enjoying a pastry. I worked at UT for 40 years & drove past TFB daily, & frequently stopped for pastries & lunch. It was a cherished bakery, so I awaited the reopening with high expectations. I've since had breakfast there maybe five times with friends. The ambience is open, welcoming & attractive, with a brilliant display of delicious-looking pastries, although, so far, I've only had the breakfast tostado & the American breakfast. The young staff work very hard, & are pleasant & helpful. My concern is with the general sense of parsimony: the American breakfast comes with two eggs & toast, but the scrambled eggs appear to be little more than 1 egg, with a single slice of buttered sourdough bread. You want jam? You have to ask for it. You order a cup of coffee, that's all you get unless you ask for accompaniments, including cream & sugar. I ordered the French fries, which are delicious, but they only come with a small ramekin of ketchup, less than half full. Napkins & silver come with the food, & are doled out, so you have to ask for it if you need a spoon & napkin for your coffee. It keeps the young staff run ragged. Texas French Bread is doing a great job holding down the fort while they rebuild after the fire. For now, they're serving breakfast and lunch out of an Airstream next door to the old building, with a shaded outdoor seating area that reminds me a bit of a beer garden. It might be a tougher sell in peak Austin summer heat, but for now, it's very pleasant. The food is excellent across the board, but the real standout (unsurprisingly) is the bread and pastries. The green chile croissant was fantastic: buttery, flaky, and just the right balance of sweet and savory. I also had the vegetarian sandwich, which is basically a banh mi, and it was fresh and flavorful. I only wish the portion was a bit bigger for the price, but quality-wise, it delivered. There was a curry soup on special the day I went. It had promise, but tasted a little watered down and under-seasoned. Not a dealbreaker, but it stood out in contrast to how great everything else was. Also worth noting: no salt or condiments on the picnic tables, which makes sense given the setup, but it's something to keep in mind. My visit was the first one since the reconstruction after the fire. The new redone decor is very nice and the place is bright. However, I had an incident that was uncalled for. I ordered the Breakfast Sandwitch which came with Pom Frites. One of our friends placed all 4 of our orders at once at the counter. When the food arrived, there were TWO sides of fries that were extra. Clearly what had happened was that our friend who placed the order did not realize that both of our plates "CAME WITH" fries and the side order that they delivered and charged us for was not needed. My husband and I returned to Texas French Bread for lunch while on our ride. I love the atmosphere there. The outside seating is great! It's shaded by huge trees. We ordered our food at the trailer and were given a number and sat down and waited. It didn't take too long before we got our order. I ordered the Ham and Swiss Sandwich. It's my favorite. It's a yummy light lunch. The sandwich is good and the chips and salsa are a great side. Overall it's one of our favorite stopping places. Imagine our heartbreak when learning Austin's darling, the OG French bakery (and West Campus cultural hub) burned down. Living in the neighborhood and a long time previous customer of TFB, I like so many others, was very excited for TFB to reopen and with dinner service! Starting with our seating it was downhill from there. Seating a party of 3 at a round table the size of a tiny cocktail table was the first problem. Service staff was inexperienced and not knowledgable about a couple of the menu items; we waited at least 20+ mins between our salads and entrees. Central Austin has so few dining options, I was hopeful TFB would become a regular for dinner outings. Sadly, I will be only be supporting this beloved Austin establishment for coffee, pastries and lunch fare. read more

I've loved Texas French Bread for years, ever since discovering their amazing loaves at the farmers market. When their flagship store burned down, it was a real loss for the community. So when I found out they were still baking and selling out of an Airstream right on the side of the property, I was all in. No reason Texans shouldn't be supporting them. They've been delivering incredible bread to Austin for decades, and they continue to show up for the community no matter what. I was so looking forward to the return of Texas French Bread, and most especially the daytime cafe. My wish was granted for the return of their long-lost Tuna Nicoise Sandwich. It's back on the menu but is a far cry from what it used to be, and what it should be for $18! The visual presentation was great and the foccacia delicious. However, instead of lightly dressed albacore, the tuna was an unappetizing, very fishy tasting mush resembling something from a school cafeteria. Will never eat it again! read more

We were visiting UT and this place came highly recommended. We got directions but were worried when we drove up to a fenced boarded up building. So I called and learned they were open in the garden out back. I'd recommend they hang a banner or sign street side to let people know they are open for business in the back. We almost drove off to find another place. We turned around pulled into the empty parking lot. We love supporting local businesses and enjoyed sitting under the big oak trees. There was a lot of pollen/dirt all over our table and I was a little sad it wasn't coming off of my purse. It would have been nice to have a larger towel to wipe down the tables. We waited a while for our food. Seemed to take a little longer (20 minutes) than I'd expect, considering it was pretty empty. Maybe they were short of staff. I finally had the chance to visit Texas French Bread. My fiancé and I each ordered half sandwiches for lunch, a cappuccino, and a whole wheat sourdough boule to take home. The bread is fantastic! Crispy, crunchy crust with a soft and fluffy crumb. I've been enjoying it with my morning fried eggs and veggies. They are still operating outside out of a vintage airstream but they have a full breakfast and lunch menu and baked goods for sale outside. They anticipate their re-grand opening in 2025. There's plenty of seating with large benches and tables to share. The ginormous tree will protect you from the scorching sun but when we stopped by it was raining and the tree kept us dry. Under all of that beautiful powdered sugar, my french toast was kinda burnt :( It didn't affect the flavor much and I still scarfed it down like nobody's business. The latte was great - subtly sweet with the vanilla syrup and warmed me up. The raspberry scone was my FAVORITE and I will get it many times again. The food was hit or miss - some items were delicious and filling portions, others simply bare bones. But let me back up and start at the start. All the baked items here are made with organic flour. The cafe has cute seating indoors and in their charming patio. The bakery has a separate line to order to-go. When we were seated, they informed us that they had no more glasses so water would take a while. Then we tried to order, our server knew nothing of the menu. We added a couple of items and the server went MIA. No follow ups, no coffee refills, no order additions - I mean, the service was very "French." We kept going up to the host stand ourselves for simple requests like cutlery and water. I wonder if the automatic gratuity on the bill removes any responsibility from the server to provide any service at all? Next time, I'm only going to pickup bakery items and eat elsewhere. When a fire burned down the kitchen and indoor dining area last year, like many locals, I was crushed. But now, TFB is operating out of an airstream in their garden and it's lovely. The garden has large picnic tables and small cafe tables. They are selling baked treats, loaves of bread and lunches, including sandwiches and soup. Prices are a little steep- I think my cinnamon sugar croissant was $5, but it's so delicious, I can't wait to celebrate it's return more often. read more
