The BEST trifongo I have tried since leaving the island!!! They have a new customer for sure in me! Super sweet folks.

Wonderfully authentic Puerto Rican food conveniently located in the middle of Houston - wish I had discovered it earlier! My mofongo was freshly made right in front of me - I saw them throw the plantains in the fryer. The rice and beans were remarkable by themselves, and the carne frita was delectable. The space is small, so if you're feeding a group, plan on ordering takeout. The owner will most probably serve you, and his English is about okay, so expect a slight language barrier if you're a white American. Don't forget to try the foreign sodas they carry! read more

My first introduction to this restaurant was the summer before college in 1994 (!!!!) when it was owned by the previous owners. My uncle and aunt introduced me on my first day visiting Houston straight from the airport. I'm Puerto Rican but had never eaten moffongo or carne frita. It was the most delicious food I had ever eaten. Fast forward to 2000-2006 when I actually lived in Houston and frequented this place. It was tiny. There was no parking. But the couple that ran the business were so sweet and the food so tasty, I would have run a marathon to eat here. I no longer live in Houston, but the friends I made along the way were introduced to Puerto Rican food, as well as this restaurant and they still go here to eat. Anytime friends are visiting Houston, I tell them to check this place out. Anytime I visit Houston, I always make a pit stop here. This place is pretty close taste wise to Piñones in PR. Yummmmmy. read more

Overpriced and bland. I love Puerto Rican food and had this place on my hit list for a while. I got fried pork with mofongo and salad. My brother got the chicken stew with plantain and rice. I paid roughly $30 for a handful of overcooked pork, wilted lettuce and chicken soup with rice. I won't go back read more

Exelent fresh food especially puerto rican. Be ready to eat variate plates good atención delicious food.

I'm going to get this out of the way now because it will probably come up in future reviews: Anthony Bourdain is one of my heroes. I love his books (A Cook's Tour is my de facto reading companion whenever I travel overseas) and his TV shows are an addiction. I dig that he's past the half-century mark in age and still listening to the punk classics he grew up on. I share the same sense of pride when I tell people where I spent my formative years; NYC for him, TX for me. And his life currently... wow. The guy is the foodie version of Man vs. Wild - plop him down in a foreign land and watch him eat his way out. What more can one aspire to? Tony eats natto, I eat natto (one of the most horrible things I've ever had in my mouth). Tony eats lamb testicle in Morocco, I eat baby goat testicle in Mexico (quite good!). Tony eats mofongo in Puerto Rico, I... immediately begin my search for the mashed plantains, garlic, and pork dish here in Houston. And all Googling points to Tex-Chick. The restaurant/shack is TINY - no more than five tables, one stove, and three people doing everything. Reminds me very much of the crowded, claustrophobic atmosphere found in Taiwan eateries. I order the mofongo and carne fritas and encounter explosions of flavor - nothing shy about this place. The big ice cream-scoop of mofongo was denser than I expected, but great nonetheless. The pollo guisado looked tasty as well. For the price though, ~$10, the portions are on the small side. Now, I don't need a buffet for lunch but I'm not Keira Knightley either. I'm glad this place exists and that I tried it, but I don't know if I'll be back, considering I can find better food and value on Bellaire (Chinatown). What can I say, I never get sick of Chinese food no matter how frequently I eat it. I suppose most everyone feels that way about their native grub. Oh, be prepared to wait for both a table and your food if it's packed. read more

My haven. Moved here from NY last year. I was already mentally preparing myself to a life of tacos and fajitas, and then I found this place. The name threw me off, but definitely good authentic Puerto Rican food. My first experience: Drove to this place on a Sunday, and was pist because it's closed, one of those small shops that leaves the open sign turned to open even when its closed. I tried probably a few more times when finally one afternoon at 4:30 I pulled on the door and once again, I flailed my hands in the air in agony and defeat and walked off probably muttering some F words, when as I was approaching my car I hear this voice... "tienes hambre" (are you hungry), my response "claro que si!" He opened the door and had them turn the fryer back on, and it was glorious! The owner is very friendly. The only thing I have ever ordered, because it's what I love, is mofongo y chicharrron. It's a mashed plantain and fried pork, and more importantly it's delicious! I don't go as often as I would like since it's not the healthiest food to eat, but once in a while when I wish to endulge I'll pay that place a visit. It is a small place, but I'm used to that. Most good Puerto Rican spots in NY are tiny and don't even have tables, just a bar and stools... cuchifritos. If you're trying to lose weight and struggle with delicious foods, stay away until you reach that goal of yours and then come by this place to celebrate. read more

The food here was really great, but it's a little on the expensive side for lunch. Plates will run $11-$14, so be prepared to shell out some cash. I was also really surprised to see a such a small place with four tables that seats roughly 14 people accept every major credit card and have incredibly clean bathrooms. One last thing: Come prepared to drop some Spanish vocab on them. Here are some words and phrases to get you started: Para aqui (ah-key): For here Para llevar (yay-var): To go Bacalao (Bah-cah-lau): Cod Bistec (Bee-stake): Steak Overall, Tex Chick is a great restaurant to bring a business contact or coworker, especially out-of-towners who are skeptical about how awesome and unique the Houston culture is. read more

While this place really deserves some accolades for the excellent home-cooked food, a home run for my first exposure to Puerto Rican food, and authentic setting, so homestyle you can see the food being cooked right in front of you, and cooked by people who well and truly care about their customers, there are two major drawbacks that keep me from wanting to return. First being the value. You should expect to pay $25 for a high-quality steak and if you expect to get it for $10, you are sadly mistaken. But there are no ingredients or cooking methods in Puerto Rican food that require charging the prices this place does. The closest you could get to justifying it is for the codfish that I ordered. But even that is $12.50 for a plate of codfish and mofongo, each portion no bigger than the palm of your hand sans fingers, and a measly mound of lettuce and tomato. If the setting was upscale, this would be closer to tolerable, but for what is basically a shack without A/C, this is simply not appropriate pricing for the portion size. Minus one star. Which brings me to the second point that subtracts one more star and comes close to two. This is a shack without A/C (admittedly, there is a fan) in Houston, that CHARGES for water. I went to a hot sauce festival a while back and discovered to my annoyance that it was held outside at peak heat, with no access to water except $3 bottles at the stands. I only bought something because I wanted to salvage something from the ticket price and gas money I spent on the trip, but I left early. Another troubling piece of information is that because Tex-Chick is only open at the times of the day when you will be sweating, you basically won't be able to tolerate being in there without ordering water. So now your tiny $12.50 plate has become $14, before tax and tip which made it $17.55. As much as the owners seem to be wonderful people, there are too many signs that reek of nickel and diming, intentionally using the location to make extra money off their customers. As much as I enjoyed the food, the water charge left the same bad taste in my mouth that the festival did, one that makes me not want to return. Tex-Chick is the type of classic vintage hole-in-the-wall that Houston does best, but whose phenomenal food is obscured by an unjustifiable price tag and some very questionable aspects. Puerto Rican food is hard to find in Houston, so if I recommend going, it is once, but once only, until they find a way to lower the price of admission. read more

So I live in the neighborhood, and I want this place to be good. But every time I eat here I'm disappointed. So it's time to review... Today it took 30 minutes to get our food, and the place is tiny. If you're looking for Puerto Rican food in Houston, this is the place. Well, it might be the only place. But they are not resting on their laurels! The restaurant is in a converted house run by the same couple for the past 20+ years. They have won a ton of Marvin Zindler's Blue Ribbon awards, all proudly hanging on disply. They do all the cooking and waitering themselves. It is tiny with like 4-5 tables and the menu is quite succinct, like 5 entrees. The place is packed at lunch so good luck getting a table! There is a never-ending line at lunch with lots of people from all walks of life coming in for take-out, many regulars who chat in rapid-fire Spanish with the couple. The food was tasty and everything was just under $10, but there are almost no veggies. And I like my ruffage. Vegetarians should stay away. read more

I was so excited to find a local Puerto Rican restaurant. Nestled in a house on Fairview, the small 6 table setting with kitchen feels so homey. The family that owns it literally takes your order and then cooks it within view just like you are visiting a friend. They are such nice people too. I of course got Mofongo and Chicken Stew and boy was it yummy. My family tried other menu items and loved them as well. I will definitely be visiting again soon and then regularly.., what a gem! If you are looking for real, authentic puerto rican food, look no more! You've come to the ONLY place in the Houston area that serves the real deal. The place is tiny, but so warm! Don Teo, the owner, and his wife, Dona Carmen are great! They make you feel like you are with family! They have been at this for the last 26 years! the last I heard from Don Teo. The menu is limited, like the space, but the food is GREAT! and nothing in the menu is over $11!! and that includes the arroz, habichuelas y carne! Their authentic puerto rican desserts are also great! you must try one when you go. This place by far exceeds all guidelines for a good restaurant. Excellent, quality food, clean environment, great service, great ambience! Go early, for lunch or dinner, or go in between rush hours!!! If I could speak fluent Espanol, I would visit this more frequently, but I'm shy and my Spanish is very, very dirty (*wink*). I only come here when I'm accompanied by my friends because they handle all the ordering, extra smooching/chatting with the lovely gramps/grandma. I would describe the food for you, but I'll just say the name instead and you can decipher for yourself: CARNE FRITA CON ARROZ Y HABICHUELAS I think it's like fried meat with rice and beans. Trust me, it sounds way better than how I'm describing it. Ask for the extra garlic sauce on the side. Grab a bottled drink from the fridge. And damnit, don't take too long eating because there are only 5 tables in the entire place. *Open invite to anyone who wants to teach me a lil' Espanol and take me here! LOL* read more

When I ate here, the owner came by and said "I forgot to tell you guys something...this isn't a restaurant, it's home. And just like at home, you're not allowed to leave until you finish your plate!" I believe every word about this place being like home. This place is TINY...it's only got 4 tables, and everything about it screams home cooking to me, from the no-frills dishes down to the plates with cheesy floral prints that look like they came out of your grandma's cupboard. I ordered the carne fritas with mofongo (fried pork with mashed plantains). The mofongo is actually what drew me here, after hearing about this crazy concoction on my favorite food porn show "The Best Thing I Ever Ate". It's plantains mashed with garlic and studded with bits of crunchy fried pork (or maybe it was bacon? either way it was awesome). I really can't describe it, but it was just GOOD...the closest I can think of is that it was something like garlicky mashed potatoes, but just...better. You really have to try it for yourself. Taking alternating bites of the wonderfully seasoned fried pork chunks with the garlicky mofongo is just as comforting as eating bits of chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes. It's just LOVE. What really gives this place its edge (aside from the good food) is the staff. They treat you like you're a guest eating in their home. When I ate there with my boyfriend, some of the other neighboring tables cleared out, so the owner sat down and just had a friendly chat with us while we dined. He told us about his high school reunions, about how he used to be a regular at the place before the business was given to him, etc...just talking to us like we were family. :) The only thing that broke my heart is that I don't think he heard me when I asked for to-go boxes, so all my precious mofongo and leftover pork went into the trash. *sob* It's ok, I'll be back for more. :) read more

This, people, is perfection. It is this tucked away little blue house that can be overlooked at first. But as soon as you step in and are greeted by the cooks its like stepping into a different place. I first went here with an old friend, and was blown away. I tried mofongo for the first time and it was literally like joy. Straight joy in my mouth. Now, the staple that I always get is the Bistec Empanado and the rice with black beans. The steak is breaded so perfectly and fried to a tender perfection while the rice comes with black beans and what I believe to be is pork. This rice is so amazingly flavored that I can literally eat just that and be completely satisfied. I think a year ago the place caught on fire and I was very worried that it would be a gem gone too soon. Thank you, Tex-Chick, for providing a quick escape from the mundane food of Houston. read more

Looking to get a taste of Home cooking... I was excited to find this place on Yelp. It's a small store front with a few table and chairs. Comfortable for two, not for a large family. I decided to take it to go. The gentlemen I spoke with was friendly and welcoming. The food was made to order, which took time, however, welcome to get fresh food. The price caught me of guard. Very expensive! While the food was okay/good, the portion size was very small leaving me disappointed. With little Puerto Rican food selections in Houston. I visited two more times with the same results and decided it will be my last time. I better balance in price and portion would have made me a regular. read more

Tex Chick - Latin American Near Me - Houston, Texas

I first ate here when I moved to Montrose in 2007. I walked by a tiny, run-down place, looked in, and saw 15 people packed tight as sardines in a room the size of a 1-car garage. Everybody was laughing and smiling. The next day I walked in and ordered Carne Guisada and it was good. The day after that I ordered Pollo Guisado for lunch, which is basically chicken, pomace oil, garlic, and some frozen mixed veggies. It's perhaps the best thing I have ever eaten at a restaurant. If I ever get the chair I want it for my last meal. I used to see 'old time Houstonians' (who were a lot more white and Southern than modern Houstonians) come in and order burgers and Onion Rings, which apparently harkens back to the days when Tex Chick was a fast-food place. Around 2009, the old couple who founded the place retired, and a young former customer bought the place. For a year after that, there was a slight dip in quality, but it seems to have come back now. The portions have gotten slightly smaller and the price seems just a little high for what you get, but there's no way I can't give this place 5 stars on the strength of the food alone. The bottom line: excellent comfort food in a quirky, intimate setting. read more

I moved from Puerto Rico when I was a young boy and in Houston this is the best and only place to get you some Puertorican food. I came here once with my brother. He wanted to show me his golden find. As we parked I was a little confused. This place is literally a shack. A shack with many wonders that is. I walked in and was greeted by a old couple cooking up a storm in the kitchen. We sat down and immediately from the accent in our voices they knew they were in company of real Boricuas. I happen to love everything about Puertorican food. The plates here are large , so plan on eating a bunch or get a box. I usually order the Bacalao y Mofongo (Stewed Cod). MmmMmm! I seriously can't think of anyone who has gotten this close to my moms cooking! I was satisfied with quality, authenticity, and how awesome these two were. I don't think you'll find them here anymore, but you will find the same authentic food. The prices are a little steep, but its all well worth it for the experience. Park on the street, don't be lazy and walk there. The parking isn't the best around this place. read more

This place reminds me of Florida, a little hole in the wall with awesome food! We came in here on a Thursday lunch time. Parking was kinda tough to figure out, but my lunch date kindly walked in to find out where to park. Walking in, it's a very small place. Maybe 6-8 tables in all once inside. The kitchen takes up half the room. Very home like inside if you ask me. I had the pork mofongo which was outstanding. My date had either the chicken breast or chicken stew mofongo and thoroughly enjoyed it. All beverages come in a bottle or a can. After our meal, we were stuffed and my companion brought half hers home to have later. Total for the two of us with 2 drinks was about $30, well worth it for some ever elusive mofongo if you ask me! read more

The meal was decent, the Mofongo and Carne Frita was very filling. The pork was very salty and fried so it was really greasy but the Mofongo balanced it very well. The plate is not very big but don't let that for you it will fill you up. For $14.35, that is with a water, I felt it was a little overpriced for a tiny restaurant with no A/C. read more

As other reviewers have noted, this is a small place run by an older Puerto Rican couple who have a lot of personality. I counted 4 tables inside. I understand they typically close at 5:30 pm or 6pm, so be sure to arrive early if you want to come for supper. According to my Dominican born wife, this place serves the real deal authentic Puerto Rican food, although they offer a limited selection of just 5 or 6 entree options. We each had the fried pork dish with mashed fried plantains (they call it "mofongo") which we had eyed at another table. No options were available to order black beans the day we went. It was pretty decent meal, but not remarkable. All the entrees are $10.50 except for the bistec encebollado (steak and onions) which is $12.50. Every dish we saw including our own were modest-to-medium size servings which are largely made up of rice and beans. I think most people could probably make something like this at home yourself with minimal culinary skills imo. Don't get me wrong, it was not bad, but I think the food was a little overpriced for what you get. For Carribeans living in Houston who want a taste of home, this would probably be a really good spot. As for me, I'm glad I went, but I'm not sure I'll be hurrying back. read more

Don't let looks fool you. Well sort of. Once inside, it's about 7 tables and the bare minimum of what you need to eat. You can see the owners/family cooking in the kitchen right infront. The rice and beans are alright - the chicken is super flavorful - and my guy had the bisteak - he loved it. It's down home cookin. Not a lot of parking infront - try for the side streets but be careful where you park - watch for signs. read more

Is this really as good as Puerto Rican food gets here in Houston? The mofongo is very dry and oily and the rest of the food is very, very salty. Their rice and beans were decent, but I thought Houston had a fairly large Puerto Rican population, so there should be better food than this! What I do like about this place is gramma is in the back cooking each individual order. That's why you'll wait quite a while for your food, but hey, it is made with love. Don't let this restaurant be your bar to judge Puerto Rican food! read more

I just reviewed this place in another page, and I think this is the better page for it... so I will copy and paste This place is pretty awesome. It's like walking into your grandma's kitchen and asking her to make you something you crave in particular. Funny that it's listed as 'ethnic food,' because it really is Puerto Rican food. The place is tiny. There is only sitting space for about 12 people at a time. The menu is small, but it has all the traditional Puerto Rican favorites like beef stews, fried plantains, porkchops and garlicky chicken... along with mofongo... I don't know how to describe it except think fried plantains and bacon and really good stuff. The place is a little pricey if you consider its decor and the fact that the foods are simple, but it really is worth the freshness and feeling like your food was made just for you. Thw owners are usually there, and they make for lively conversation- in addition to this you just might run into some Houston Astros as you eat, as many of them are regulars at this place. read more
