I finally had the pleasure of checking out Tex-Chick Eatery, a family-owned Puerto Rican restaurant that's been serving the community since 1982 and is now lovingly run by Titi Marilu and Grace. From the moment I stepped into this cozy spot, I instantly felt like I was back home in Puerto Rico. Just like our island, it's small, but filled with a huge heart. We spent time chatting with them about our families, childhood memories, and how happy we are that they've kept our culture alive right here in the Montrose area of Houston. We enjoyed a true Puerto Rican feast: arroz con gandules, pernil, mofongo con camarones al ajillo, pollo frito, empanadas de yuca y masa, flan de coco, limber de guanábana, and of course, more food to take home because we couldn't have it all at once! My personal favorite were the limbers with traditional flavors I don't recall ever having a limber outside of PR. This is a counter-service eatery, where you can see all the freshly prepared dishes right in front of you. You truly can't ask for better service; if there's something you're craving that's not in the menu for that day and they have time, they'll gladly make it for you! That's the kind of love and care you only find in places that cook from the heart. Prices are very reasonable although parking can be a bit tricky but that's mostly all of Montrose. This small dive is one of our favorite Puerto Rican spots in Houston! Tiny but mighty with flavor. Authentic Puerto Rican food that will make you want to come back for more. They change the menu daily so check their Facebook page to know what they are serving. We had Mofongo with Pernil and Mofongo with bacalao (cod fish) which were delicious. Their empanadas (beef and corn beef) were light, flaky and very tasty. We had some platanos maduros (sweet plantain) and some tostones (fried green plantains). Topped the delicious meal with Malta & Flan. The parking is very sparse and the dining room only has 3 small tables and some seats along the wall. I took my dad here for his birthday and it was insanely hot inside and we were all super sweaty. We ordered a good mix of things like mofongo, empanadas, carne guisada, and chuleta. The man working told us there wouldn't be enough plátanos to make 3 mofongos we originally wanted. That was fine, but then some men came in and ordered mofongo and he took their order and served them first. The guy was honestly kinda rude to us when ordering. The food was fresh and pretty good, but not very flavorful. If I ever got it again I'd do takeout so I don't have to talk to the guy or sit in the heat. read more

I finally made a return visit to Tex Chick after 18 years! The food is delicious and the flavor is definitely Puerto Rican. More than 18 years I visited this iconic place in Montrose area to eat some "carne frita" with rice and beans and tostones cooked by an old couple who prepared the food as you ordered it. After a while I heard that the administration changed and the style of the food in a somewhat negative way. I decided to give it a try now that Angelo is running the restaurant and I can enjoy the old style way to eat in Tex Chick. Angelo cooked there in an open kitchen and you can smell the latin condiments (authentic Puerto Rican... because I'm from Puerto Rico!). The place is really small (with about five tables). Parking is a problem if you want it to Park close the restaurant (but you can always park around and walk). I went during the week at midday and Angelo was kind to tell me where to park. Food can be a bit pricey but certainly not disappointing. We enjoyed a tasty and delicious mofongo with breaded chicken breast (very tender and nicely fried), a mofongo with carne frita, and two alcapurrias with meat (good size). Oh and a Malta India and Kola Champagne from Puerto Rico. If you're from Puerto Rico you should definitely go there and enjoy the flavors from home. I have tried numerous time to give this place a chance. And its just not it. The place is a hole in the wall. The menu shows no prices and anytime i ask what something cost its always different each visit. Most recently i wanted a side order of tostones. I asked the cook. She told me $3. When i was ready to pay i was charged $6 for literally 6 slices... its a joke. The tostones was burnt and not fresh. The beans were cold and tasted old. If you want an alternative hit up Dominican Grocery on Richmond.. its night and day from this place. read more

If your looking for some good ol home cooking Puerto Rican food in the fourth ward, tex chick Puerto Rican restaurant is the place to go. The place is very small I'd say about the size of a 2 car garage, there's about 6-7 tables and the kitchen is right next to you and you can clearly see your food being cooked to order. Please don't come here if your expecting fine dining this is a spot where you can sit down chill chat with the cook/owner while he cooks you up a awesome Puerto Rican dish. The food here taste just like I would have at wellas casa on a Sunday . Since I started coming here to tex chick I have tried several dishes and I'm pleased everytime. I've tried carne fritas, mofongo, pollo guisado, bacalao, carne guisado, breaded chicken, yellow rice and beans, plantains both ways either Maduro or tostones, I've also tried the pastelitos de carne e pollo that's not even on the menu :-)... The carne fritas is one of my top choices when ever I come in and it's a very popular dish, the mofongo I've had here some of the best I've had in a long time, mofongo is smashed fried green plantain made in a pilon known has a wooden mortar with some garlic, some olive oil, and broth although it's Origin is from Puerto Rico mofongo is also big in Cuban and Dominican cuisine. The carne and pollo guisado is the same Just made with a different class of meat and I don't know what they put in the sauce but it's amazing. The bacalao known as salted cod fish is very good but be aware that the bacalao they use has small bones so please be aware of that. The yellow rice and beans are delicious as well as the plantains in either way of Maduro or tostones I prefer tostones with my meal. Now the pastelitos are made to order and both chicken and beef are good. tex chick Puerto Rican restaurant is a good place if you want to eat some good home style Puerto Rican food. The only bad thing I'd say about this place is a bit small and there's hardly any parking around fairview so be prepared to drive around. This restaurant is literally a whole in the wall, but it is so good. I am not Puerto Rican so I can not say if it is authentic, but being my second time ever having Puerto Rican food it was amazing. I ordered the carne guisada and it was full of flavor and the rice beans and tostones were also great! My friend ordered the Mofongo and it did not disappoint either. Staff is so friendly and caring. What a little hidden GEM off of Fairview! Been wanting to try this place for a while now. Last Sunday we just walked in and to my surprise it was a very cozy place, more like walking into a kitchen but we received a warm welcome by the family who owns/runs it which made us feel at home. The menus were on our table, and when we were ordering the host/chef/waiter walked us to the kitchen and showed us what he was cooking. We were not that familiar with Puerto Rican food, so by showing us it saved him trying to find the words to explain. Which worked for us! They were conveniently playing merengue music, which we enjoyed, all that is missing is a beer & view of the ocean.. We ordered steak & onions & fried pork. Fried pork was a bit dry, so he made some more, free of charge. The steak was very good, and the plancha's were delicious. The rice & beans had a nice flavor as well. If you are looking for AUTHENTIC Puerto Rican food this is NOT it! It was tasteless and what is supposed to be Gondules looks more like Spanish Rice and has NO sofrito taste anywhere in it. It was dry and not worth it. I added a pic of Gondules and plantain i make and while my gondules may be slightly darker (due to the sofrito added) it tastes delicioso and my plantain are never dry, tasteless and stiff. Save your money and pissing off your taste buds... unless you don't know better you may actually like it but i know gondules and spanish rice aren't the same. Also, even if the "chef" is Puerto Rican doesn't mean they can cook, my mom is Creole from Louisiana and can barely cook, she could probably open a Creole restaurant in the UK and folks might be none the wiser so maybe that is what is happening at Tex Chick in Montrose, the customers don't know what they are missing out on. ‍ read more

Think of walking into abuela's home... as casual and homey as it gets. We had mofongo with carne frita, tasty but it missed the "caldo" to dip the mofongo. I did not ask for it but it's very likely that they would do their best to make it happen. We also tried the alcapurrias, both kinds (yuca and plantain). Our family has a love relationship with yuca so needless to say that those were our favorite. The most shocking part was that meal plus a can of soda was 16.00. I say it was shocking because there aren't prices on the menu so you don't know your total until the food is ready. Then I found a hair (which was not mine, I'm black and my hair is much kinkier than the hair on my plate ) plus I had my hair pulled in a bun. This was our first stop when we got to Houston. It did NOT disappoint! Angel was so friendly and accommodating. I am vegan so I ordered my usual rice, beans, and tostones while my husband got carne frita and a shrimp empanada. We were both incredibly satisfied. We stopped by for lunch on Saturday at about 4pm and it was empty when we arrived but soon filled up. The place is extremely small but has a homey feel that only adds to the charm. I felt like I was eating at grandmas house and you can even hear your food sizzling as it cooks. The service was great, the owner (I assume) was very nice and made us feel welcomed. I'd like to point out that I am not a Puerto Rican food connoisseur but my bf is Puerto Rican. With that being said, I ordered carne frita with arroz and gandules and my bf ordered carne guisada with arroz blanco and habichuelas. As an appetizer we ordered some deep fried potato balls filled with ground beef (can't think of the name). The flavor of these were good but the center was cold. It seems like they freeze some of their food or atleast their appetizers which I personally don't like. I wasn't impressed by my main course either. The carne frita was overcooked and the rice was hard, bland and wasn't fresh. I mean I still ate it all. lol My bfs' habichuelas were pretty darn good though and let me tell you, I'm a bean connoisseur; I'm a beaner by nature. Lmao! He said his meal was ok, but also not impressed but he cleaned his plate. Our bill came up to $45 with tip included, not what I picture paying for abuelitas kitchen food. There's no prices on the menu, small portions that tasted okay. There were no printed breakdown of the prices. My wife and I ate at this place on accident. Well, not on accident in that she had heard of it before on the radio, but on accident to the extent that we were planning on going somewhere else--specifically, Pho Saigon. We were both in an ethnic food kind of mood (then again, when are we not), so when we drove passed Tex-Chick, I didn't hesitate to stop and check it out. I was anything but disappointed. This was my first experience with Puerto Rican food, and I am happy to report, it sits quite well with me. When you first walk in, the thing that strikes you first is how small the place is. I counted maybe 5 or 6 tables total. We were able to grab a table easily since we came at an off hour. The menu itself consists of a little sign above the register (which is in front of an open kitchen that is about the size of the kitchen in my apartment) with perhaps 10 Puerto Rican dishes listed in both English and Spanish. Having never been to a Puerto Rican restaurant, we decided to ask the man at the register (who I assume was the owner) for some recommendatons on what are the quintessential Puerto Rican dishes. He suggested that we order Carne Frita y Mofongo (fried pork and fried plantains), as well as the chicken stew (which is more of a chicken in gravy sort of deal--sorry I forgot the spanish name). We grabbed a diet coke and a Puerto Rican soda that was pineapple flavored. The food was awesome (though far from healthy). Two guys were sitting at the table next to us and seemed quite a bit jealous. They ordered hamburgers and looked pretty disappointed with their selection, as the patties were small compared to the bun and ingredients. I don't blame them. Our meal came out and we easily could have split one of the dishes, but were happy that we would get to eat leftovers. In fact, my wife is making the leftovers for breakfast right now as I type this review. I can't decide which dish I liked better. Both came out with well-seasoned pinto beans and yellow rice to accompany the entree. Both entrees were in the $10-12 range. The fried pork had a nice crunch to go with the oh so rich and fatty flavor. My favorite thing was to get a bit of the plaintain, put some of the fried pork (it was cubed, not shredded) on top, and top it with some house-made green hot sauce. The chicken stew came out in a wonderfully complex and well-seasoned sauce. The chicken simply fell off of the bone, and I had to stop myself from gobbling both plates up before my wife could taste any of it. The food, combined with the ambience (I didn't feel like I was in Houston anymore) make this place a must try for anyone craving some comfort food. I can't wait to go back. read more

After stalking this establishment on Yelp I decided that I would check it out, and I am glad that I did!! The owner is SUPER friendly and helpful (when I inquired about what one of the other guests was eating, he gave me one to try--don't know it's name, just that he said it was finger food). Anyway, as others have noted the place is SMALL. This is my first time eating Puerto Rican food, but it certainly will not be my last! I ordered the Cod and Plantains and it was very good, yet strange and interesting. The plaintains are so incredibly rich (and they give you like a pound of them) but they are extremely tasty and filling. Tiny Puerto Rican joint with a Tex Mex fusion. My review is only for their Mofongo with Carne Frita, Pork Chops and Flan. Mofongo with Carne frita is great. The Mofongo is not hard which I like and the Carne Frita is perfectly cooked and flavorful. Their fried Pork Chops are delicious. A little greasy but I like it that way. You can have your Pork Chops with a Mofongo if you would like. You must to try their flan. It's not as strong on flavor as other places. It's the perfect flan. My only problem is their mexican rice and beans. It just doesn't go well with the food. If I'm eating Puerto Rican food I want my Puerto Rican Rice and beans too. read more

I moved to Houston from Mayaguez Puerto Rico in June of 2003 and this is the only place where I can find authentic Puerto Rican food in Texas. The restaurant has been there for many years. It used to be own by an old couple Don Teo and Doña Carmen but he sold the place to one of his clients. Don Teo still stops by and works at the restaurant every now. Every single one of my friends I've taken o this place have loved it.. If you go I suggest you get some Rice and Beans, with Fried Pork and Mofongo. Make sure to be ready to eat because their serving portion is pretty large. I try not to ea lunch whenever I go because by the time I'm done, that meal has become my lunch and dinner all in one meal. The place may be a little pricey for some people... heck the first time I went there I thought it was pricey until I took the first bite and I realized that it was worth the money I was spending. As I type this I realized that I haven't been there since December 09 so I need to go soon... maybe I'll take a long lunch tomorrow. ;-) read more

I've driven by this place at least a dozen times and was curious about the teeny place with the interesting concept of Puerto Rican and Tex Mex from the same grill. It's a hole in the wall and a no frills kind of place so don't expect a waiter, but you can expect friendly people who will explain to you what is on the menu. There is no alcohol for sale. Maybe it's BYOB, but I never asked. I ordered the the Beef Stew and it was so delicious with the rice and frijoles. I should have ordered the mofongo because it seems that's the special everyone one tries. Next time! The malta India drink was an interesting refreshment. They accept major credit cards. I was expecting a bowl of soup, but the food came on a plate with rice and beans. The beans were good, but the rice had no taste...hot sauce on top fixed that. I had a Malta India drink with the meal. Never having a Malta soda before, I liked the taste. The owner is very friendly and helpful...so are the patrons who were eating there. We visited Tex-Chick Puertorican Restaurant in the middle of a week day. The parking is limited in the front, but manageable for this small restaurant. The owner cooked our mofongo with carne frita a few feet from where we were sitting. The food tastes authentic and makes you want to come back before you even finish your meal. After living in FL for many years, I came to love and enjoy Puerto Rican food. I was so happy to find a PR restaurant here in Houston -- and just the perfect small business to support. It is a quaint restaurant, five tables max. You'll come in, order at your table your desired meat and then a choice of rice and beans or a plantain mash. We went with the onions and steak and the breaded steak -- delicious. Both MASSIVE portions so easily shareable! We each had half of our steak left to take home. The cooking was good home cooking, nothing fancy but that's the best kind of food. I wish they had more food options, however. I hope they add some more PR favorites to their menu or at least on a rotating manner. They serve arroz con gandules on the weekends, so you know I'll be back to try some then. Remember this place is CASH ONLY! They do have an ATM if you need it, but better to just arrive with cash and pay that way.
