I had my car towed to Terry's for a transmission failure. They supposedly fixed it by changing the transmission filter and fluid, costing $250, $110 of which was due to 11 qts (charged $10 per qts) of fluid while the car holds only 4.5 qts (slightly more than a 1 gallon), obtainable off the shelf at a total price of $20-30 per gallon for decent quality. Of course the given justification for the price difference was that "That's what happens [the breakdown] when you put crap in it," implying that the quality was higher than what I had put in it myself before at a lower price. Ironically, the answer to "why 11 qts instead of 4?" was that they ran (that supposedly high-quality fluid) multiple times through the system just to figure out that the leak was from the filter!
The car broke in less than 30 miles drive after that. Terry's staff did say that "the transmission is lazy" and the problem is not solved completely, but did so after already "fixing" it and charging me $250 without consent. I expected them to tell me that it might break down again before charging the money. When I asked for a partial refund over the phone, he said that he knew and did warn me (referring to the conversation *after* the payment). Although I was polite and careful with my tone and language, he interrupted and asked me to "shut up" and listen to his response. When I called him out that "what makes you think you can talk to me like that?" his tone did drop a little bit, but an apology never followed.
I ended up donating the car and had it towed from Terry's. At least they were patient with the car sitting in the shop for more than a week while I was making the towing arrangements. read more
