After being quoted just shy of $3,000 at a chain store in the area, I opted to take my vehicle elsewhere for service on my exhaust system. With a recommendation from someone that works at Toyota of Des Moines, I came here instead. Dropped my car off at 8:00 AM, was out the door with a repaired vehicle by 3:00 PM for less than $150, including tax. I've seen reviews for the lady at the front desk; I had no issues with her at all and she was very efficient in getting me taken care of. Hats off, ladies and gents. Don't really have an opinion of current owner, just know that when Terry Allen (now retired) was owner, that you couldn't help but like him, his crew, his receptionists and their services and reasonable prices. His lot was always full of cars for repairs and yet he could always make time for me and he was honest, sincere, knowledgeable and most reasonable prices. After visits to tire shops that worked also on car repair and getting their long list and, say, $1300 list of things they would say I needed done, Terry, in looking at their list, would laugh and fix the $200 part that actually needed done. I really miss Terry and haven't found an equal replacement in the last 20 years. Having known the receptionists at the front, it is disappointing to hear comments on current one. I just added coilovers onto my car and needed a Re allignment. They charged $88 and i was expecting a perfect alignment when i got there but instead i was told my car was "too low" to adjust the camber?? so it was only partially done. Well i guess partially done means they got lazy and made it even worse because after taking it on i-235 instead of leaning to the right slightly like before it now LEANED so hard to the LEFT that when i took my hands off the wheel to test it, it litteraly swerved into the left lane and i just went home after that. 1/10 also terrible location the entire shop is on a crappy hill. read more

Receptionist is not friendly and does not go out of her way to help customers. Gives off a "we don't need your business" atmosphere. Whenever we have used them our vehicles always seem to have either a new, worse or same issue a week following being serviced. The response from them being well it was fine when we had it, not taking any responsibility or pride in their work. I would not recommend, it's a hassle to have to schedule life around a car repair, especially a second unexpected trip. read more

Lovely folks. I was nervous going somewhere new. They were very personable. Gave me prices that were very manageable. And for an extensive muffler repair, it only took a couple hours. Very happy! 10/10 would recommend. Edit: I wanted to mention that the place is very tiny so they don't really have a greeting office. You just walk into the garage and make eye contact. The parking lot is also tiny so be warned if you aren't comfortable with the dimensions of your car. I see a lot of these reviews complaining about the customer service, but the office lady and mechanic gentleman who helped me were the owners. They were absolutely friendly. I contacted Terry's Wholesale Exhaust on June 25th, and July 8th. To get an estimate about having them put in A catalytic converter. Got the same price both times. About 480 or 485.00 , dropped it off to have it installed today 7/30/20. Got a phone call this morning that said "I don't know who gave you that price, but catalytic converter are 589.00. Also in my calls for estimates I was told 350.00 if I was another shop, 480 or 485.00 for me. Then I also needed a new Flex pipe which was 150.00. When I got a call that the work was done. Just the catalytic converter, opps we did the flex pipe too, I'll just throw that in.... I really feel like I've been bait and switched. My car needed the converter so I had it done. I moved back to Des Moines from Denver after about ten years away about six months ago, so when I hit a curb and messed up my front passenger tire on my car, I didn't have a go-to shop yet. Fortunately, having grown up here, my parents were around to recommend this lovely place. I called them to let them know I'd be having my car towed over, and they just said, "OK, call us when it's on it's way to give us details." They didn't ask what's wrong, they just said OK. I called them this morning once the car was on the tow truck, gave them a bit of information, and they called back within a couple hours to give me a very fair estimate. By 3:50 pm, they called back once again and told me my car was already done! I wasn't even expecting them to look at it the same day (again, I'd been living in a much larger town with more drivers and more accidents, but still), let alone have all the necessary parts and get it done in time to get me back on the road by dinner time! Everyone I talked to was very polite and nice, and their estimate came in within $20 of the actual total (and considerably less than I had feared). I've taken the car on a fairly lengthy test drive this evening and it's actually driving better than it was before I had my mishap - it probably needed the alignment anyway! The only downside to this place is their parking lot - it's very...let's say...cozy. Other than that, I have zero qualms about them and will be taking my car to them in the future. read more

This place is no longer ran by Terry. I used to take my car here before and had no problems. However, after being gone for 10 years and coming back, the service has been awful. After my 1st visit, I recommended my son, my dad and his wife for brakes, muffler, etc. However, after the 1st visit, the female who answers the phone has an attitude and is unprofessional and the new owner Eric is untrustworthy. He charged me over $300 to replace the window regular for a new one. However, it never worked correctly. Took it back and still does not work correctly. He told me that I need a new one. I explained that I just paid for a new one. In addition, had my brakes repair for over $300 and the roof interior lining was ripped from the back on the drivers side and now hangs low. Eric was extremely rude, very condescending, and refused to fix it or compensate to get it fixed. When I called my cousin who referred me 10 years ago to Terry's Auto, she told me that Terry no longer owns the business and she had the similar problems in dealing with the current management. A couple of weeks ago, I was traveling from Colorado to visit my daughter and her family in Wisconsin. While crossing through Omaha, we hit a slight bump in the road which caused a failure in our exhaust system on our Nissan Versa. Originally, I figured we could handle the increased noise until we got to Wisconsin, but as we got closer to Des Moines the noise got louder, and we contacted the local Nissan dealer service department. I wish I could remember the name of the tech that I talked with, as he gave me some very helpful advice. He referred me to Terry's Auto Service (http://www.terrysautocliveia.com) and explained that they do a lot of their exhaust repairs. I contacted Terry. He gave me directions to get to his shop. He was actually outside, on the phone with another customer, when we got there. He heard the car as we came into the parking lot and knew immediately what had happened and how to fix it. What looked to me to be an expensive, major repair turned out to be a simple (and inexpensive) fix that Terry did himself in less than twenty minutes. I like that guy. I paid them over 700 between two visits to get my Isuzu rodeo to start and both times it didn't start the next day.?They just swapped parts instead of ever diagnosing the problem. They didn't even run an obd reader to see why the check engine light was on. I had to pay for repeated towings only to have it start at the shop and for them to act like I don't know how to turn a key in an ignition. The woman on the phone doesnt give a shit. If you know exactly what's wrong and it's simple maybe they are ok but I'd go somewhere else. They have no interest in fixing their sub par work. My car currently doesn't run and they aren't going to help but I can pay for another tow over if I want them to look at it. read more

This place is as honest as they come. They have ALWAYS taken good care of us and only do to our cars what is needed. The most recent experience: I was told a part was bad by someone else. So, I took it to Terry's for the repair who told me there was nothing wrong. They could've given me a new part and made a lot of money when it wasn't necessary. And, I would never have known. But they are good to their customers and honest honest honest! And their prices are competitive! We are so thankful. So basically told me I didn't know what type of vehicle I own so they couldn't help me till I knew. Also wouldn't return any calls when I left a message basically they wouldn't take my money even after they insinuated that I was dumb because according to them I was driving a vehicle that didn't exist. So after all this I try to purchase exhuast from them and get it installed else where. They insisted that I look up the application then call them back so they know what to sell me. As if they didn't have a computer right in front of them that would be able to tell them that. It's their business after all. I've already told all my friends they might as well go to another place besides Terry's. They suck at providing a service which they claim they're good at. come to find out it's not Terry's it's some other people running the place now and they got horrible service took my truck in there for an alignment then the receptionist called me back when it was done and told me that they did it the best that they could claimed it had loose front end parts but they didn't bother calling me and telling me that they just did the alignment and called me back afterwards went in there to pick it up receptionist was rude I asked to talk to Terry they said Terry doesn't own it no more just wondered why it still says Terry's when it's not ask to talk to the mechanic then she goes what can I help you with and I go I need to talk to mechanic finally talked to the mechanic and told him which truck it was straight out ask him why he would do it alignment if parts are loose any reputable company would do an inspection before completing the alignment ask him what was done and completed and he claimed that he didn't even remember my vehicle but then claimed later that he remembered doing the alignment very bad sad company wouldn't even recommend the place to my own enemy read more

I have taken multiple vehicles to this shop before when Terry worked there and never had a problem. If I could give 0 stars I would. They have the worst customer service I have ever experienced at an auto shop since Terry is no longer running the place. The guy in charge of alignments is extremely rude. I brought my vehicle in and asked if an exhaust and alignment could be performed the same day, they said no problem. They had my vehicle from noon until close and never contacted me to tell me they were not going to get around to working on it. I showed up at 5:45 and the doors were locked, they claim they don't close until 6:00. They had my only set of keys and it was Friday. They were just going to keep my vehicle all weekend and not even let me know. Luckily I caught the rude alignment guy trying to leave and managed to get my keys. Didn't even get an apology from him for the terrible service. I wouldn't recommend this shop to anyone and I can guarantee they will never get my business again. After 10 years of doing business with Terry himself now the new owner Eric is slowly chasing good customers away. Brought my truck in for a VERY simple starter button I get my truck back in worse shape than before. Had an issue with ignition switch not working right but now I can't shut the truck off without dumping clutch. Did not authorise any work if it was worse off. Asked him politely after he engaged conversation if there was a trick to shutting off, He kinda smiled a bit and ignored me. Granted he was helping someone else so I did wait. I get attitude from there on. I usually do not deal with Eric and never will again. If it was worse than expected stop and wait for the customer to get back to you. And yes I was quite angry because I hate attitude so they saw some of mine. Only thing I reccomend from them is exhaust and thats it, Deal with Terry only. I feel really bad a friendship ended like this but unauthorised work is quite upsetting and if things were explained better I would of had them do the complete job. read more

Terry's is the only shop I'll take my vehicles to. I'm an avid DIY-er who has worked on cars as a hobby for years. I certainly can conduct most repairs on my own and can diagnose a wide range of problems, but there are situations where it doesn't make sense (time + complexity) for me to do it myself. Terry's always treats me fairly and with respect. I can't count how many times I've called, thinking I've got the issue diagnosed, and they will walk me through another testing procedure to help me better isolate the problem so I can do it myself. They are not snobbish or condescending! It's almost as if they would rather help me repair the problem myself, than come in and spend my hard-earned cash! Again, in those rare instances I just can't get it done on my own, they are very clear about what the costs will be (always amazed at how fair their services cost), and never add extras without my explicit permission. On the contrary, I've brought a car in with X,Y,Z issues and they simply say - "nah, you should only bother with fixing X" saving me more money than I expected! Lastly, they are fast! I'm never left hanging for days, dead in the water, waiting for my car. Most of the time they are same day, or next day. I highly recommend these folks.
