On my recent visit, I went here because I needed a new battery. To be more specific, I just got a jump from my in-laws and was driving on a dead battery. Needless to say, I was planning to change the battery in the parking lot. The sales associate was very helpful finding which battery I wanted to buy. There are many different brands that are rated with different cold cranking amps (CCA). In case you didn't know, as the weather gets colder, it is harder for a battery to function. For example, you've probably noticed that when it's really cold, your car takes a few seconds longer to start or may not start at all! Having a battery with a higher CCA rating such as 800 CCA ensures that the battery will function when it's like ten below zero. The standard rating is 600 CCA. Given our frigid winters here in Iowa, I prefer to buy a battery with at least 800 CCA. After I chose my battery, which was around $120 that included a six year warranty, the sales associate offered to install it for me! This is a great service for individuals who are not familiar with cars. Also, the batteries themselves weight about 40 pounds so having someone lift and install them is very helpful. He grabbed the new battery and put it on a cart with all of the required tools. He wheeled the cart outside, and he changed the battery. He also recommended buying some battery terminal rings, which are green and red cloth discs that go around the terminals. These rings and the associated liquid coating that is applied to the terminals are designed to help reduce discharge. I have used them in the past and decided to use them again. Besides, they are only a couple of bucks! Lastly, the sales associate took my old battery, which will be properly disposed/recycled. Advance Auto also has some great sales every now and then. You don't need the coupons as they have them posted outside the building or along the counter. Lastly, if you are doing any of your own car work in their parking lot, the sales associates are really cool about letting you use their restroom to wash up afterwards. Also, their restroom has that orange, mechanic's soap that gets all of the oil and crud off of your hands! Overall, a great place to buy all of your car parts and accessories!

Just spending some time with the kids, parents, and kicking around. On the way home from my parents' place on Tuesday evening I had a check engine light come on up by Stanhope on Hwy 17. I still had to take the kids home to their mom's (near Norwalk) and then drive back to my place in Clive. It was solid...not blinking...so it probably wasn't anything catastrophic. I've blown two head gaskets in my past and seized up one engine so I can say that my butthole puckered up just a little the rest of that ride home (about 80 miles in total were left to go). I got home and started stressing a little, but got to sleep. The next morning I started checking into what I needed to do. I found online that O'Reilly's will do free code checks on check engine lights. I showered up, got dressed and headed that way. The guys at the Clive location were great. Ran the codes and gave me a print out. He did tell me that the codes generated were sometimes general and not 100% accurate. They won't clear the warning so that light stays on...they just check the codes for you. It was showing problems with my emissions/catalytic converter. A quick search showed that replacing a catalytic converters is about $1,300 in parts and labor. Ugh. I took the print out to the Midas in Clive. The guy at the front desk was great. He looked at the print out. Made it clear that emissions do involve the catalytic converters, but there are other things like O2 sensors, etc. in play. He asked me the year and miles of the car and then he laughed and said it was highly unlikely that it was my catalytic converter. He asked me if I knew how to clear the check engine light. I'd already Googled that. Remove the negative battery connection for a couple of minutes and hook it back up on a GMC vehicle. He told me to do that and he also asked if I ran ethanol. I do. He recommended getting a good fuel additive, filling up with Premium for a couple of tanks, and getting it out of town and to "drive it like I stole it." Lol He said if the light did come back on to bring it in and the would hook it up and dig in deeper, but he didn't want me to waste my money. That's important to me too! I was kind of taken aback. It's not often right now that you find great people who provide good customer service and think about you more than just with their own wallet in mind. Or at least it kind of seems like it's less often than it used to be... The light hasn't come back on and I hope it stays that way. I didn't put a lot of miles on yesterday, but I put quite a few miles on today in town, on highways, and the interstate. I'm hoping it stays that way if the good Lord is willing and the creek don't rise... I appreciate the guys at both O'Reilly's (Clive) and Midas (Clive). It was nice to deal with people who weren't going for an immediate cash grab... I know they really helped relax me when my anxiety was kicking in thinking worst case scenarios. As an added note... A lot of farmers in rural Iowa are burning off parts of their land and ditches right now. I ran through some really heavy smoke on the way home. In hindsight the heaviest was North of Stanhope. I read online that smoke from wildfires etc. can sometimes impact your car's sensors... Could have just been a coincidence too.

Don't ever confuse being furious with being difficult! First LIE; Shawn, Bill & Shawn Jr ALL proudly shared with me the new 30K Engine Analyzer they had & would be using to diagnose the reason for the SERVICE ENGINE SOON warning dash light coming on. Second LIE; Yes THAT SERVICE ENGINE SOON is the correct light that was on & the reason I brought my mother's car in. Shawn was aware THAT was the warning dash light that was lit & he even reset it following their unneeded service. Not a CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. Third Lie; I DID NOT MOVE ANY BARREL blocking your carwash entrance & for you to accuse me of doing that is beyond ridiculous. If Shawn is such an honest guy, as you initially touted to me, he would have told you HE MOVED THAT BARREL & then told me to drive in & he'd start the carwash. It never started, not one drop of water was ever released. Shawn even apologized to me saying he was sorry he didn't realize it was not working. I was even told to come back in the Springtime for a free wash. I hope my reviews give future potential customers pause before taking their vehicle to your service center. Again with the false accusations. Any still pictures you claim to have of "a woman moving your barrel" is not me. Ask Shawn, IF he's the honest guy you say he is, he'll tell you the truth, HE MOVED THAT BARREL. YOU however are the height of an unprofessional businessman. Funny how when you texted me pleading with me to bring the car back you stated "I'm not like those other guys, I'm professional & I just want to make it right for you" HA AND by calling a dissatisfied customer a "Karen" immediately identifies you as a immature & hateful MAGA, certainly NOT ANY KIND OF PROFESSIONAL!
