In prior years I've gone to Lexus service but their service been terrible. I'm so happy to find shade tree auto. The crazy thing is they are not even close to my home that's how much I would rather go here. They always provide me a car or shuttle so I don't have to wait. However the oil changes are so quick and the bathrooms are so nice I could probably just stay in the bathroom!!! They don't pressure me into any service but provide me with enough information to make a decision. read more

I was driving across the country from NYC to LA with my wife, 17 yr old son, 2 dogs, and 2 cats when we started to encounter a rather strange noise coming out of the front end of our 07' Highlander. Fearing the worst, we hunkered down for the night at a pet friendly hotel and in the AM after scouring the Yelp reviews I decided to drive 20 minutes to Shade Tree Auto (passing many other auto service locations along the way with lesser reviews). I arrived when they opened, and they agreed to check out my car (I thought it sounded like something was loose underneath up front). Sure enough they bolted everything back together for me and refused to take any money for their work. While I doubt we will ever cross paths again, if you live or work in the area, I'd strongly suggest that you check out their facility for any service or repair work needed. As a side note, it is THE nicest and cleanest auto service repair facility I have ever seen anywhere in the world, and I've visited 62 countries and every state in the US. read more

I went here on a recommendation from a co-worker. He said he's sent a ton of people there for damages and has never had a complaint from anyone. I told him after their service, he could add me to that list! Everyone here is very knowledgeable and the service is fast. They have fair pricing, and they gave me a military discount, which was not even asked for. It's never fun having car problems when you're 1500 miles from home and then trying to find someone that will be honest with you and get you back on the road without swindling you. Brought my 2018 Forester in twice in the span of 2 months for oil changes and tire rotations while I was on a months-long road trip back and forth across the country. I avoid dealerships whenever possible, and was so glad to support this local shop located on the outskirts of Des Moines. Pam was a huge help in getting me an appointment on short timelines as I came through town, and set me up with a loaner vehicle. Everyone I communicated with throughout the process was efficient, responsive to my questions, and friendly. They provide an overview of how everything is looking before they do any work, including recommendations for what services are needed. During one visit, they addressed some needed maintenance outside of the standard lube/oil/filter change; they were also extremely honest about what work could wait until I got back home to Oregon and charged me less than originally quoted. Their straightforward, open communication and integrity in service provided me peace of mind, which was so important to me as a woman on a solo cross-country trek. Really a 4.5. I took my car in because I was having issues with it idling low after replacing the starter. Looking at reviews from this site Shade Tree Auto was highly recommended. I contacted them and they told me to bring my car in and they would take a look. What I really liked about their service is they check everything on your car and provide photos if they come across any issues. They tell you what's wrong and let you decide what you would like to fix without being pushy. My car was fixed in a timely manner with them keeping me updated along the way and they provided a shuttle service bringing me to pick up my car. -.5 because they are a little pricey, overall I felt it was worth it. Nice friendly folks, beautiful shop great communication and effective use of technology. I have taken two cars there but brought them both home and resolved the issues else where for a fraction of what they wanted. I was charged over $125 each time for just looking at the vehicles. I even tried to negotiate with them to save a little money and still give them the opportunity to do the work, but they would not work with me. Their costs were very high, but I can see why they have a great deal of overhead to cover, with the fancy new building and the show room/ display case for just a race car. The Mazda my son brought in was repaired by him a 17 year old who took 1 semester of shop class and the parts were less than $100 and it only took him an after noon. For that you wanted around $1300 to do the work. On my wife's car I paid $635 for the part you were billing me $1,200 for and $600 in labor for a total of about $1,800. I removed five bolts and one nut and two wire harness plugs. Once the part arrived I bolted it back in place, put the air filter box back in place, plugged back in the two electrical connectors had the vehicle transported to Mazda to be programmed. Mazda called and said the Transmission Control Module already had the most up to date firmware and there was no charge. I spent about $750 ( including the $125 to Shade tree) when it was all said and done and less than 30 minutes of my time. Yes you can not compare the cost of a customer doing their own repairs, that was never the issue. The issue was what was a fair/ reasonable fee to do the work. As a person who as ran a small business I understand that you are there to make a profit. But charging almost $1,000.00 for around 1 hours work is not fair or reasonable. It does not take a doctorate in mathematics to understand that overhead is a factor in operating costs and are paid for with money collected from your customers read more

Wonderful service. Trusted mechanic. Customer service a+. Having had the same mechanic for 20+ years, it's scary going somewhere else. But with shade tree, I have been treated so well. Honest good people there. Having a vehicle to drive while they look at mine makes its less stressful. I had taken my vehicle there several times and had great service. Every time I was there for an oil change they looked my truck over and had no real issues. The last time I took my truck there for an oil change, all of the sudden there was over $2000 work of extra work that needed to be done. One of those things was my rear brakes and it was urgent to get that done and my rotors would also have to be replaced. I thought it was odd that within 5000 miles my truck, 4 years old, was falling apart. I did not have any of the work done and actually took my truck somewhere else to have my brakes inspected. I found out that not only were my brake pads fine and had at least half of their life left, my rotors were just fine also. To me, this appreared that they knew that I take care of my truck and if there could get a quick $800 for doing a "urgent" brake issue fixed. Not only did they not get my brake job, they won't be getting any of my jobs from here on out. Honesty goes a long way in my book. read more

Shade Tree gave me a repair quote, which I was comparing against a dealer's quote, to replace an engine mount. Shade Tree's quote was lower than the dealer, plus they gave me a 10% Veteran's discount, making it a much better deal. Once I accepted their repair offer, they immediately started the work, and had it completed the same day, just a few hours later. They gave me a ride to and from home while I was waiting. I have previously gone elsewhere for auto work since it was conveniently located right in Grimes, and I had not heard much about Shade Tree. After their new center opened and I had heard about them being heavily involved in the community, I decided to to give them a shot. I was pleasantly surprised with their amazing service. Pam was very helpful up front, giving me the confidence to leave my keys with her. I also felt a sense of trust that she would not tell me that something needed done, that was unnecessary. This was important to me as my previous auto shop would tell me over a thousand dollars of work needed done, when only one or two things were necessary. I was then offered a ride to home or work, or wherever I needed to go. Once my car was looked at I was sent a link that went into detail about parts of my car (including pictures and specifics), and video tutorials that explained what a part did or why it needed to stay in good condition. I then got the repair work done the same day I brought my car in. Pam called me when my car was done and I was offered a ride back up to Shade Tree from work. I came in and was explained what work was done and I paid for the excellent service. I didn't notice any additional charges, or anything over I would have paid somewhere else. Overall, Shade Tree Auto has excellent customer service and has added great amenities since building a new center and upgrading their online information for customers. read more
