Excellent Italian bakery in the Arthur Ave Italian section of Belmont, Bronx. This place has been around since 1967! The breads and baked goods are great. They use this coal oven which I think is over 100 years old, so cool. read more

I've literally been coming here for decades, pops always took me along to make the Arthur Ave run, and its definitely the best bread spot in the five boroughs. Even Nona from Sicily's fresh-out-of-the-oven loaves can't hold a candle to these. When I have business in the Bronx, I always go right when the place opens at 9AM and get my pane-di-casa and pizza bread. Don't have them slice the bread, you rip off chunks as you eat it, freakin rookies! Since I can remember, I've been coming here to get my bread, and it always has the same satisfying crust. Of course I would give this place five stars! My fellow resident's dad owns this shop and he used to work here as a kid. The bread was amazing. Since we were friends, he gave me a tour of the place. This was a simple bakery. The front has shelves and a counter where they display the goods and the back is where these giant brick COAL BURNING ovens were just filled by the hundreds with beautiful round loaves of bread. I hate crusts, but eating one right out of the oven was so tastey. The bread whites had a nice push back to your teeth: al dente? The smell was wholesome and inviting. All the workers were so nice and I believe they were just nice like that and not just because we were the owner's son's friends. They run a clean operation with good basic materials and who doesn't love things made in a traditional way. read more

I became familiar with Terranova's bread oddly through a supermarket that sells their bread upstate. It is excellent and usually pretty fresh considering the distance from the Bronx. I decided to stop by the retail location while passing through the Bronx, and was hoping on super fresh delicious bread. I purchased a plain Bastone and a sesame twist. Both tasted at least a day old, which was shocking since I am buying it from the source. Also, when you buy it from the retail location versus the supermarket you have no way of feeling the bread for freshness. Employees were quite surly, but maybe that goes along with the depressing neighborhood. read more

I went into a local Italian Supermarket day of the snow storm last week. No rolls left but they had the pane di casa and from all places Terranova's in the Bronx. I live in Queens grew up in Corona and haven't had a really good pane in along time. I have to say it was the best. Terranova is a name from Corona. Most of the bakeries are gone fron there now. They have a gold raisin corn meal and semolina bread, excuse me if I am describing it wrong but it's been so long since they've had it on my infrequent trips. When our boys were around we had to buy two big loaves of the sublime peppery pork bread: one that we tore to shreds and devoured on the spot and one that, if we were lucky, made it home with us. They usually have samples on the counter and frankly my sons could have eaten all of these. Have a napkin or hand-wipe thing with you; the bread is lightly oily and will be eaten savagely by any who try it. If you drive any distance at all there's no way that loaf is getting home intact. read more

I live on the block, so when I come home late at night, they will sometimes give me bread. However, 535 E 187th St. is where they do their bread baking (only the round loaves, I believe), not where they sell their bread (except to me, for free, when I am feeling shameless). So unless you are wandering down E 187th st in the wee hours of the morning, you can't get bread here. You best head down a few block to 691 E 187th St, past Arthur Ave to Cambreleng. I've never been inside the real location, but I can say from experience that the round loaves are VERY good, and if you go to the bakery instead of panhandling outside your own house, they will slice it for you. Imagine that. So classy. They also make some tasty fresh ravioli, although they really can't compare with Borgatti's. Anyway, snaps for free bread! read more

I drive over 30 miles and cross a bridge just to buy a loaf of bread. I especially like the large well done loaf. Try the fresh pasta also. You will never go back to pasta from a box. If you have a sweet tooth, try the anisette biscuti. read more

I have been coming to this bakery for two years now, and its been outstanding. The quality of the bread is out of this world. One thing that I enjoy the most when I come here is the large variety of bread choices they have. From the Olive bread, Ciabatta, Raisin with walnuts, to the Chickle (Amazing black pepper bread with bits of Prosciutto). If you are more on the simple side, and like to stick to your plain flavors.. They have some satisfying breads to chose from, like the Pizza Bread which is a soft but crusty bread that is round with a hole in the middle, great for fun decorations, and tastes great. And of course their rated number one bread, according to the zagat survey ( I do my research!!) the ultimate best Pane Di Casa. Which is baked in their beautiful antique brick oven, which Ive seen on a few tours Ive gone on. Customers Do Come First!. Every single time I walk into this bakery all the employees are very helpful, and friendly. I have never had any disappointments. Till this day... The Terranova business is more delightful and creative than ever, now offering freshly baked bagels with cream cheese, with a nice cup of coffee. Five Stars!!!!!!! read more

I visited Terranova Bakery for the first time this weekend., I purchased about 8 loaves of bread, all different. Everyone in the family absolutely loved the bread: 7 gran, olive loaf, chiabatta, and Italian bread. Excellent. Not only was the bread wonderful, Mrs. Terranova was wonderful, too! What a nice woman, friendly, warm, welcoming. The service was excellent and friendly. I will definitely be coming as often as possible. read more

Someone told me they liked Terranova's ravioli's better than Borgati's ..and I stopped here and got one box just to do a taste test...They were visually puffier..like little pillows...most definitely more cheese.As soon as I got home I boiled 4 to taste...immediately brought 5 over to my sister to try because I couldn't believe they were noticeable better = the cheese filing is much more and the texture was so creamy and the pasta itself was even fresher tasting. They are round, not square..and I won't even share them now, I just keep taking out 2 and boiling them and eating them alone before anyone else gets home...I know you can relate to this...this is a true Italian!.. read more

Best bread in NY. Drive 100 miles from NYC and you'll find Italian delis advertising that they carry Terranova bread (though it's usually a day old) - that wouldn't happen if this wasn't the best. Nothing better than popping in when a fresh batch is coming out of the oven and it's too hot to even slice (though unsliced is better anyone, at least for long term storage/freezing). Buy some pizza dough while you're there. read more

In spite of the stiff competition in the neighborhood, Terranova manages to go the extra distance with several of its offerings. It's Pan di Casa is as good as anyone's (always get the large loaf) and the Olive Bread is the neighborhood's best. Lucky shoppers can sometimes pick fresh loaves directly off the cooling racks as they come out of the oven, and the smell of the warm (actually hot) bread can be so transporting that you will wonder how you could have ever bought bread anywhere else. My only disappointment with Terranova is in what they don't seem to offer. I don't think they bake a ciabatta, or if they do I have never seen it, but either way it is a shame because it would probably be stellar.. read more

i live in rockville, md now, but i'm from the bronx., & lived for many years in the belmont area on garden street. it was almost a weekly ritual for me to go to terranova's & get 1 of their sliced large round loaves. these loaves are the best in the world. if you don't believe me, try finding bread of similar quality somewhere else. you sure can't find it in maryland. i tried online to find italian bread like this, & what i got wasn't tangy like terranova's, but more like wonder bread! their cold cuts are tops, too. read more
