He was a caregiver for his mom for several years. She passed in November. I said that when he was ready, I'd treat him to a meal. His birthday was in late May. We were both free last Saturday for dinner. I chose Double Sushi on the Danforth, across from where my first family doctor used to be. It is also a ten-minute drive from his home. I called the eatery and spoke to a nice woman. I asked if this eatery did reservations. It did. Yay! I gave her my name and phone number. We had a reservation for 5:30 pm on a Saturday. My friend is notoriously late. I am perhaps too patient for my own good. I once waited for him for two hours at a subway station platform. We both didn't own cell phones. Times felt much simpler. Frankly, I got to this eatery late by roughly ten minutes. I took the 404 - Don Valley Parkway. Bad move when I got to the Sheppard exit. It was a parking lot and barely moved. I ended up backroading it from York Mills - Ellesmere down to the Danforth. I made a left turn onto Danforth Avenue from Dawes Road. I pulled into a small parking lot for Pizza Pizza and Double Sushi. The former used to be huge, but it ended up selling half of its property, which is now Double Sushi. There are two designated parking spots for Double Sushi. i nabbed the last spot closest to a dumpster. I was elated finding parking. I walked over to the entrance that faces Danforth Avenue, on the south side. I was immediately greeted by the woman who took my reservation. I apologized for being late. She was okay with it and showed me our table. I got water and a Diet Coke with ice in a glass to start. I looked at the menu. I knew that I wanted a bento box meal. It's totally me. I decided to text my friend and ask where he was. The answer wasn't good. He was still at home. Not good at all. I felt like being at that subway station platform again. His phone was charging in his home. He was in his backyard gardening. He lost track of time until he walked into his house at nearly 6 pm. He said that he'd arrive at 6:45 pm -- over an hour after the reservation time. He was estimating the time taking the bus. He then changed his mind and took an Uber. I have only taken an Uber with friends in Charlotte, NC, and to and from the car dealership when servicing needed more than a day. I have never taken one because I was late. We are different. Yet, we accept who we are. He had a good heart. Just tardy! He came dashing into the restaurant at 6:30 pm, apologizing. He hasn't changed. I don't think I have. It was as if his Uber driver knew that he was late by getting him here quickly. My order was the following: - Diet Coke - Chicken teriyaki bento box My friend's order: - Coke - Chicken teriyaki Both our meals came with salad and miso soup. We loved the tangy dressing on the salad. The veggies were crisp. The miso soup was excellent, with small cubes of tofu and plenty of flavour. Our food took practically no time to arrive. The staff here were super accommodating, as we stayed till it closed at 9:30 pm. They didn't push us out. The woman gave us a glass carafe of water towards the last hour being there. My friend and I always have a lot to chat about. My friend and I loved the chicken teriyaki. We got a generous portion of chicken morsels that were tender and yummy. The sauce was perfect. Not too sweet. Not too salty. Like baby bear, it was just right. The chicken teriyaki came with steamed rice. It was the perfect portion size. My bento box came with tempura. It wasn't oily. The batter was crispy and yummy. The veggies were delicious. The shrimp were plump and succulent. I got a California roll. The six pieces were delicious and tasted fresh. The menu had a photo of sliced oranges as the fresh fruit. My friend didn't want it, which is why he got the chicken teriyaki only. I got a honeydew melon wedge. I was delighted to get something different. I love fruit and this melon was sweet and juicy. I headed to the washroom. Our server came over to me with a key. I learned that you need a key for the washroom. If you are a Pizza Pizza customer, you also need a key for the adjacent washroom. The women's washroom was clean. This eatery has been around for a while, as it had a worn look and feel. Everything was fine. No complaints. The corridor between the washrooms and the restaurant was heated. It was like being in a sauna. I was here for nearly four hours and my friend for three. We had the best food over good conversation. It was great meeting up with him. I paid with a credit card. It had more veggies than what you'd traditionally find in this dish, like sliced mushrooms and julienned carrots, but they worked with the bean sprouts. The flat rice noodles were perfect. The beef was tender. This entire dish was flavourful with the right amount of searing from the wok that you'd expect with decent Chinese food. The portion was generous. It was to the point where one can of Diet Coke wasn't enough to wash everything down. This beverage was cold and perfectly complemented this dish. I am happy that I decided to eat at work, as I could fix myself a cold drink. I will definitely return to order more food. I noticed that I can order from this eatery's site, so I'll give that method a try next time and see how it goes. You can't dine at this eatery, as there aren't any chairs or tables.
