My wife and I tried this place after all of the glowing reviews here and we were both ridiculously disappointed. Atmosphere is very quaint and traditional sushi house and we immediately enjoyed it as soon as we walked in. Service started really well and they gave us an extra mini appetizer which was happily received. Then it went downhill from there. The restaurant wasn't very busy and nobody arrived after us. We ordered the tempura entree, 3 rolls and 4 pieces of nigiri. Nothing too complicated, right? Tempura arrived in 15 minutes after we ordered, but the sushi arrived an HOUR later. Literally. We continued asking our waitress who was suddenly non-existent and she kept saying that, "It is coming, it is coming." After finally receiving the rest of our order, the sake nigiri was not fresh at all. Slightly discolored and chewy. And their dynamite roll was rather inedible. Scallops were completely overcooked and dry and there was absolutely no flavor to the roll at all. At this point, there are only 2 tables left in the restaurant. I had to walk up to the kitchen in order to get our check. Waitress brings us our check and it's incorrect. They overcharged us by $15. I walked back up to them and they corrected their mistake without apology. Will safely say that I will never go to this restaurant again. read more

SIMPLY THE MOST AUTHENTIC SUSHI RESTAURANT IN HOUSTON! OK, we have been to the so-called #1 top 'fusion' sushi in-spots... they are fun, but they are not authentic. We travel to the Pac Rim lots, so I know sushi... Teppay is just like walking into a little spot in GInza... or near the Toyko fishmarket... wonderful and real! We have enjoyed their food for more than 25 years, and we have never, ever had the chef or his wife pull any billing stunts on us, not ever. The tab is always proper and correct, not cheap, but not in error. Their 'sissy-sushi' is great too, grilled eel, cooked shrimp, hand-rolls and such... perfect for those non-raw folks... also the Tempura is great. This is a very typical small Japanese sushi restaurant, about 15 at the sushi-bar and around 10 tables... we love the two private rooms, great for a quiet evening. We try the new ones, the very expensive ones, and we always come back to Teppay! One important point - we are usually the only "round-eyes" enjoying the great food and service, mostly a Japanese crowd! A strong mark of excellence. read more

Delicious sushi, experience chef, service was a bit slow but I enjoyed it since my bf and I were trying to enjoy our time and have a slow dinner. Might not be the best choice if you are coming for a quick bite. read more

A tad disappointing - judging from the reviews I was expecting really exceptional sushi ... but their sushi offerings were surprisingly limited. They had only a handful of really basic rolls - spicy tuna, eel, dragon roll, California roll, etc., and a bunch of sashimi. I'm a huge fan of creative rolls, and they had none. Bummer, especially since this was my farewell to sushi since I'm going full vegetarian. Additionally, I thought the prices were unusually high for such simple items. I had a dragon roll, and shared some veggie tempura with my dad. The tempura was pretty good, and the dragon roll was decent. Nothing exceptional about the experience or the food. It's a cute little place and the staff was really friendly, but I probably wouldn't go back Maybe I should have gone with the noodles?? read more

Disclaimer: Did not order any sushi items. Maybe their sushi rocks, but as far as the items we ordered, they were mediocre. That, and the price was not justified. Shrimp Tempura appetizer: Shrimp are TINY. Cheapo Japanese joints (Hokkaido, Mori Sushi) beat their pants off in terms of quantity. The bead batter was unique, but there was the persistent aftertaste of something - ginger? windex? Not recommended. Tonkatsu: $16 gets you two smallish pork cutlets. Batter was done nicely, though I've had better. I thought the dish was simply too expensive given that you could get similar for under $10. Tonkotsu ramen: Easily the highlight, and the reason I came. Broth evokes positive memories of Japanese ramen (the type they serve in street stalls in Tokyo, not the instant stuff). Excellent pork broth, decent pork. Ramen was somewhat overcooked, but I typically prefer ramen al dente, which many find undercooked. To each their own then. Anyways, since this is the only decent place so far in Houston with ramen, this gets 3 stars. read more

This small restaurant is hidden, but holds many big treasures. This place has about 10 tables and sushi bar. My date and I ordered the rainbow roll, smoked salmon, spicy salmon and ramen. This sashimi was very fresh. It was juicy and probably the most fatty sashimi I've ever had. I loved the spicy salmon and the smoked salmon. The wait wasnt too long for the food. The staff was super friendly. I liked the broth of the ramen, but it only came with one pork slice. There arent any specialty rolls, but there are other typical sushi restaurant items such as salad, noodles, appetizer and entrees. The restaurant is only open for dinner btw. read more

I went to this place last Fri. for dinner around 6:30. The Chinese waitress was really mean. She asked me to sit at the bar and let me pick wherever I want to sit. I really enjoyed to sit at the bar but I don't like her attitude of saying that I must sit against the wall while there were only 3 people (including myself) and she said I could pick "wherever"..... Her bad atttitude really ruin my appetizer. There are many ways to inform customers or lead them where to sit. It was not properly to let them pick and blamed them after they seated. The food were good as always. I enjoyed watching chef preparing sashimi and sushi.... read more

Teppay is one of my go to restaurants for sushi fix. Cooked food are great. I had the chirashi and my wife had the beef udon soup. Fish is very fresh. Broth was tasty on the udon. We went there late so no wait. I would have given 5 stars but there was some confusion and we got the chirashi first before our edemame. Waited a bit for my wife's noodle.... And they forgot our spider roll which came last. Otherwise, service was great. Friendly staff. All Japanese which is a plus when I'm going for Japanese food. read more

Their nigiri was amazing, we loved every single bite of it. However, just like what the others said, I wouldn't recommend their ramen or even their tempura udon. Those were bland and could be jazzed up with a little more flavors. read more

Terrific Tonkotsu Ramen -- tasty broth, delicious add-ins like bamboo shoots, and a tender thick slice of pork. 2+ pork slices would've been the cherry/sashimi-on-top. My partner for the night was an avid ramen hunter, on the lookout for a place in Houston that rivals those ramen shops on the East and West coast. She admitted that this was the best yet in Houston, and she said some other things, but I couldn't hear her too well 'cause I had my bowl in two hands, lifted to my face getting the last drops of broth -- I was basically Naruto at his favorite ramen shop. read more

One of my two favorite sushi spots in Houston! Teppay is always amazing and fresh

Ramen, Ramen, Ramen. It's not the stuff that is flash fried in cellophane with a flavor packet stuff. It's the delicious meal you need to cut through the damp cold that Houston winter favors. It has been determined by me and a friend of mine that one of the best meals you can treat yourself to is a bowl of ramen noodles from Teppay with a spicy scallop hand roll. This meal will do you no wrong. read more

I'm giving this restaurant a solid four stars over all. It is a very cozy and small restaurant. The restaurant could be a typical restaurant in Japan. It pretty much offer simple and typical Japanese favorites. I would definitely come back and become a regular. read more

I've been searching for good ramen places in Houston and decided to try this place out. In short, I greatly enjoyed the authentic ramen and other dishes I ordered, but will not be coming again due to the incredibly slow service. My friends and I entered the restaurant at 6:00 pm on a Saturday night to a mostly vacant restaurant (most of the tables were empty). We did not however, receive our food until 6:50, and not until we had to remind our waiters multiple times about our missing food. The slow and inattentive service irritated me quite a bit, particularly our incompetent waitress who had difficulty even remembering what we had said as she was writing the order down... On the food end of things, the ramen was delicious, as was the tempura. It may have also tasted so good because I was so starved by that point that anything would've tasted heavenly. So would I recommend this place to a friend? Yes, but only if they have a lot of time to waste sitting around. read more

This restaurant offers authentic traditional Japanese food and sushi. This is not a trendy restaurant/bar. It is a smaller restaurant with limited seating and hours. I have never been disappointed with the food. One of the few restaurants to offer ramen. My dad jokingly asked them to fry the left over Spanish mackerel spine/head from our aji tataki(sp?), and surprisingly they did. It was delicious! Pros- quiet, awesome food, large selection of dishes not offered at other sushi restaurants Cons- this is not cheap, but the price isn't outrageous for the higher quality, it's family operated so service can depend on how busy they are read more

I have no complaints. The service was wonderful the food excellent. Sushi is indeed very fresh the ramen is jam packed with flavor. The menu is extensive some something is bound to meet your fancy. I highly recommend this resturant. read more

This Japanese restaurant has limited sitting, but the quality of their food is uncompromising. Every dish has a unique taste and display, with fresh and finely prepared ingredients. Even their "to go " dishes are held in nice boxes, consistent with the quality of their food. My favorite Japanese restaurant in Houston! read more

This place likes to fly under the radar--it's a small place nestled in large, faceless mall. it took me months to even figure out this place is here, and I live right down the street! The service is old-school--this is a family-run place, owned and operated by actual Japanese folk. The fish is quite good--the salmon and mackerel nigiri are very tasty, as is the chirashi (a rice bowl topped with a variety of sashimi). There are non-sushi Japanese dishes as well. The hakata ramen is not much to write home about, but that's the kind of dish that you'll only see done right in a ramen shop. The udon--particularly the beef udon--is pretty tasty and filling. As has been noted by a lot of the other reviewers, this place is not cheap, and some of the prices have gone up recently. The aforementioned chirashi bowl set me back $29--I will definitely have to cut back on how often I eat here! Or rob a bank. read more

I'm by no means local to Houston but this was a fantastic find. The shop is very small and located at a not so fancy corner of a strip plaza. You can immediately tell that this was operated by authentic Japanese owners. I picked a bar seat and got to enjoy sushi chiefs making sushi quite a bit. This place felt very comfortable and not so pretentious as the other ones I've been to. My favorite was their spicy scallop sushi with some topiko inside. I also had their uni, ikura with quail egg, salmon, tuna. All were fantastic. The ramen soup there was very tasty and in my opinion outcompetes some actual ramen places. I can't wait to go back! read more

I am very sad to have to post a complain from this place which I used to love until tonight. On October 28th, 2017, I had the misfortune to myself with what was in fact a tiny snail roaming freely in greens. When I asked to talk to the manager she would just explain to me that because they only buy organic produce no matter how well they wash their veggies sometimes one or another little bug will appear on them. Well, actually, bugs and snails only appear in your food when you do not wash them properly, period. When we showed and pointed the snail to her she wanted to play the "this is not a snail" move but it was too obvious. When she brought us the check she finished by saying "in France eat snails you know?" WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?!?!?!? EXCUSE YOU?!?!? You just don't say something like and expect your costumer to accept it. Just FYI, old lady (manager) edible snail are first purged because they are full of parasites no matter what. I tried to explain to her that it is still cross contamination. Had any of us had eaten that snail we could have contracted an infection and things would have gotten worse. My one-star rating is dedicated solely to the restaurant's manager attitude and arrogance. read more

Traditional Japanese, absolutely delicious! Order at the bar and talk to the sushi chefs!

Expensive place for Japanese food for the portions that you receive. The interior is very reminiscent of Japanese restaurants of the past and that is why I visited; I was looking for more of a traditional atmosphere like Sushi Miyagi. The price per dish or per sushi piece is why I wouldn't come back. That and the wait staff were more interested in their own conversations and phones than servicing. read more

I should have reread my previous review before entering Teppay for lunch today, as the chair-bumping waitress is still in residence, and the burning smell from the kitchen turned out to be the soft-shell crab in my Spider roll. The sushi rice was hard, as noted by other Yelper's. And let's not forget the salad drenched in dried-out, caked-on salad dressing, obviously prepared hours in advance. read more

The first time I was here was with a friend who wanted to try this place for its Tonkotsu Ramen. He loves Japan and everything Japanese and in the works of trying to find a job there. Anyway, I love how they serve you a tiny portion of Chinese broccoli with black sesame sauce to whet your appetite. We both tried the ramen which came in a very well made pork broth, some veggies, fish cake, and to my dismay a small slice of meat. It was delicious nonetheless. Good thing I ordered some sushi though. The nigiri was extremely fresh, and I liked how the waitress offered ponzu sauce for the white fish instead of soy sauce. This trip gets bumped down to 4-stars because of price. I can get similar sushi for less at Sasaki. The second trip here, I took my boyfriend so he can try the ramen too. I stuck to sushi this time, but it didn't taste as fresh as the first time, so it's inconsistent. I may have to re-review this place if I come back. read more

We've been coming here for 20+ years. Consistently the top Japanese restaurant in Houston. No frills, no trying to cover smelly fish with sauce, no fake fancy garnishes. This is the real deal. No one can touch Teppay. Owner's family is very warm and welcoming. read more

I've been at this restaurant many times. I usually get the tonkotsu ramen which is pretty good, the best ramen soup base I've had in Houston. But if you are one of those people who absolutely love ramen and have been trying ramen at every city you visit, this place ranks normal. Their sushi quality is pretty good. They have the best Ika (squid) sashimi I've had in Houston (compared to Sasaki, Hokkaido, Sushi Miyagi, Miyako, Ginza, and Uchi). Their handrolls are also pretty amazing. Overall, love this place! P.S. One star off because once they messed up my order...I ordered ika, they gave me tai, then said sorry and gave me octopus - -. Third time was the charm. Got my ika. read more

Since I work in Houston a couple of times a year for a period of several weeks each time, I like to find good, not too expensive, high quality places to dine. I love Japanese food. So glad to have found this place here on Yelp. It is an old school, high quality, straight forward, family run, totally satisfying sushi restaurant. The rest of the menu looked good, too, from what I saw being delivered to people around me, but I can vouch directly for the sushi. Service is good - gets the job done. I have been twice in the past week ... will go again next week! read more

Very authentic japanese restaurant. I'm taking a star of this place because the service is not great. They are not attentive to their customers and you have to ask for things more than once before they remember to bring it to you. Other than that, food is more than average for me. This place used to be our favorite for years, until we expended our family and brought our kid. The attitude was completed unwelcoming if not insulting. The owner shouted at her daughter when she arranged us to sit at a table for four people. And rearranged us to squeezed in a corner table for two people. The owner gave us a very bad look because of the kid dropped some cheerio on the floor. My husband was trying to pick them up and got pushed by the owner as she thought he may step on it. It's definitely not a kid friendly place. Don't bother as the experience would be completely a bad one. read more

Love the little joint, been there twice and their food is definitely something to go for. Tonkotsu Ramen is tasty, Tsukiyaki is rare to find in Houston and has the awesome broth, oh and def. love the Agedashi tofu as an awesome appetizer. The food and the place feel authentic and the atmosphere is always good. However I really have to say their service is def. something I have to bring up. The first time I was there, I arrived around 8:20 pm on a THURSDAY night and the place was only half full. Me and my two other friends waited for almost 40 minutes before ONE OF US got our food. We did not leave till 9:40 pm and that to me is just ridiculous. The second time I went with my wife and we got there around 7:00 pm on Saturday night. The place is still not completely full and the service is a little better this time, but still very very slow. BTW, for both times we had to ASK to get our drink re-filled. The servers are nice but I don't know what they are up to in the back cause that's where they stay for MOST of the time. No one really bother to check to see if your cup is empty nor tell you how much longer you have to wait. I probably won't come again just because of the constant slow service, unless I have special occasion. I will miss their food, but unless they speed up their service a bit I will pass. read more
