Oh dearest, me ): I had such high high hopes for Teppay. I had many friends hype the ramen up for me, but for some reason, actually for many reasons, I will definitely be scratching Teppay off my ramen shop stop list.
I'll start with our entrance. I'm not quite sure why I thought the restaurant would be bigger, it obviously looks tiny as can be. Anywhere you sit you're pretty much cramped. Their 4-top tables only looked comfortable for 2-top parties. Being at the sushi bar, even for the two small girls we were, we felt like we were part of the 12 kids from the 'There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe' story, and the sushi chefs were our parents, handing the food they made for us over the bar.
We quickly noticed the place getting busy, as the remaining sushi bar seats and tables in the restaurant filled up. Luckily, we got there at a decent time, maybe 6ish, and ordered everything we wanted all at once.
Feel free to skip ahead and look for the capitalized menu items, as there you will find the review of the food, and not all the details surrounding the restaurant itself.
Appetizer: Beef Tataki
Sushi: 4 pieces of Salmon, 2 pieces of Yellowtail
Ramen: 2 Tonkotsu Ramen
I figured we'd get our food, catch up a bit, and get out. I was happy we got to put our order in before the rush, because we got our sushi quick quick. Only 5 minutes later, one of the sushi chefs handed us the 6 pieces of *SUSHI*. Their salmon was extremely soft and buttery. Almost melted in my mouth! I almost wished I had ordered more, but I had ramen coming, so I needed to hold off and save room! We eagerly wolfed down that, and sat patiently for the rest of the food, talking and gossiping all the meanwhile. Eventually, I looked at my phone and realized.. we'd been waiting 30 minutes for the beef takaki and the ramen. Looking around, I noticed the family of 3 next to us, AND the couple on the other side of us had received their sushi and were almost done eating it, and they had come in after us. We brushed it off, saying we'd give them a little more time. Maybe they're short staffed in the kitchen? 15 minutes later we finally get the *BEEF TATAKI*. I was excited for this dish, as Aka has one that is magnificent, but our aspirations for some tasty tasty slices of beef were thwarted. It was dry, and rubbery. Even with the sauce they give you it was unsatisfying. To be bluntly put, it was boring. We grudgingly continued eating. And again, we sat. And waited. And waited. Then the mother next to us asked our waitress what was taking so long for her son's ramen (mind you they came in maybe 15 minutes after us). When she came back, she was holding our ramen! I felt bad for the son. But my stomach is much greedier than my heart. We paused our talk of boyfriends and shoes and dove into this *RAMEN* we had so been salivating for. It was then I noticed two things; the color of the broth seemed very.. light/translucent and .. only one piece of pork? Really? "It better be the best pork I've ever had" was my initial thought. And then I tried it. And it was awful. The broth was tasteless. Just plain bland. The egg was overcooked, and the yolk broke apart into pieces and fell into the broth. Some of the egg was even cold still. The pork tasted like my dad's pot roast. It definitely did not look or taste like it belonged in this bowl of ramen. My friend felt the same way. We couldn't even push through this like we did the beef tataki. We didn't even finish it. Ate less than half and looked at each other, feeling guilty, and said, "Wanna just get a salmon roll or something?"
At this point in dinner we were getting full, but nowhere near satisfied. Pushing our bowls to the side, we flagged the waitress and ordered a salmon and avocado roll. Then we watched the sushi chef who made rolls (usually certain chefs are assigned to certain menu items; one for sushi/sashimi, one or two for rolls, and one for cold dishes, depending on the restaurant), and luckily for us, the chef making rolls all night was right in front of us. Then we waited and watched and waited and watched. And then finally the waitress came back and said, "I'm sorry, what did you order again?" LOL. I just wanted to leave ): We got the roll 3 minutes later. Asked for the check, and left.
SOOOOOOO. Ramen is a NO GO, here at Teppay. I will definitely NOT be back for that. Their sushi chefs are REALLY quick at getting orders of sushi out, but their kitchen definitely needs to speed things up. And the waitress did seem genuinely sorry, and even slightly embarrassed, that she forgot our roll. This rather depressing experience has not completely deterred me from coming again to try more of their sushi and sashimi. I believe that's where they truly shine, and I lament that the original reason I was here was not solely for that. read more
