The people that work here have been extremely rude to me every time I visit. I'm not sure if its just something about me that they don't like or if they just can't be bothered to take my money. The only reason they get that extra star is the product selection. I keep coming back because I kindle a bit of hope every time that they won't behave like disapproving statuary with looks more bitter than only the most hardened and cynical barista. Tenzing Momo has a fantastic location deep within the Pike Place Market. I went in on a lark and was pleasantly surprised. I heard the girl behind the counter recommending an herbal remedy for asthma so I thought I'd ask about headaches. I have had terrible headaches for the past 15 years or so and can no longer take NSAIDS as a result. The woman behind the counter offered several suggestions including Wood Betony. I hadn't heard of it and she explained it's a centuries old go-to remedy for headaches and facial pain. She told me I should drink a tea of it every day to build up concentration in my body to prevent them to begin with. She only had maybe an ounce left so she just gave it to me for free, which was really nice. I bought some trusty White Flower Vietnamese analgesic (love) and Kava Kava extract as well. Now that I have returned from Seattle I enjoy a hot cup of Betony tea every night and it seems to have helped. Even if it's just psychosomatic, I don't mind. It's a great story and the more research I do there really does seem to be a lot of fascinating lore about it. My only (but still significant) complaint about my experience is that just one of the employees was helpful and everyone else seemed mildly annoyed at my presence or perhaps even at life. OK, this is kinda hard for me to write cause I'm such in love with this place. Seriously! I can NOT go to Seattle without stopping at this place. As an herbalist myself, I pine for this place, I dream of it, I covet it, I lust after, wishing I could have a shop of my own even half as good. It's my dream to work here, if I lived close enough! Yeah, ok, a bit obsessive, I know. Dah Hubz and I tried to pass through Seattle one time without stopping here - couldn't do it. I started to even shed a little tear, thinking I might miss it that trip. If I am within even 500 feet of this place, it draws me like a moth to the flame. To me, it's the smell of comfort, a cocoon that closes out the harsh world. When I am in Pike Place and feeling a bit overwhelmed by the people, smells, jostling, whatever, I go to my Happy Place - Tenzing Momo. I always just want to plop on the floor, curl up and never leave. In all of the herb shops, metaphysical joints, temples, stores and places I've been, this one is by far THE best of all. If they don't have it on the shelf, they can get it! And their prices are great! (Hey, I sell this stuff online, dealing with it every day, retail and wholesale, I KNOW these prices are good!) The people are knowledgeable and know what they are talking about. Or, if you happen to stump them, they know how to get the answer - fast - from one of the other workers there. One word of warning - if you are sensitive to incenses, smells, etc, this might not be the best of places for you. My husband has really bad allergies so he doesn't last long in here with me. Here's how I was introduced to Tenzing Momo. I make no secret of my undying love for the scent of evergreen trees. I was never one to wear traditional perfumes, but one day a coworker of mine gave me a lovely gift: a bottle of Pine fragrance oil from Tenzing Momo. I could smell like a Christmas tree every day!!!! I loved this so much that I sought out the store and promptly bought a bottle of Lilac oil, which smelled like the real deal (unlike any other perfume I had found so far.) I have since graduated to more complicated perfume oils with many notes, but I blame Tenzing Momo for getting me started. Tenzing Momo is situated in a tucked away, secret corner of the Pike Place Market. Which is part of why I like it. They have a big display of fragrance and essential oils (Sniffing = Yes, Testing = No) which is great education for learning to recognize scent notes in perfumes. Some are also blends, like "Satyr" and astrological oils. They have jars of dried herbs as well as tinctures. There's tons of incense, a book section, and a huge selection of Tarot decks. They also have crystals, and other New-Agey items. There's kind of a range from Buddhism-Hinduism-Wicca here. They have some interesting Tibetan Buddhist items on display, including phurbas and prayer wheels. I'm not sure if they're actually for sale, but they're beautiful to look at. The staff can be a bit pushy, though. I was here a few days ago and my partner asked a man working there about a particular type of incense burner we weren't familiar with how to use. Tenzing momo is the place to come if you are looking for organic herbs for medicinal teas and other random natural goodies. I bought organic lavender here when I made my lavender sugar cookies! Yummy. I also came here when I needed supplies for my unicorn party (ear candles make great unicorn horns). They have plenty of herbal extracts and bulk herbs, which is great because you can buy the exact amount you need. Rasberry leaf makes a great herbal tea! They have the best tasting organic chamomile tea and chrysanthemum tea as well. It feels good to support this small business instead of some chain supplement store. an incense lover's paradise! I dragged my husband in here during our last visit to seattle and he had a hard time getting me out. I stumbled upon this shop while browsing at Pike Place Market and I am so glad I did! It's an eclectic apothecary with all sorts of incense, oils, crystals, candles, and anything else you might need to infuse your home and body with good energy. One of the staff made me a custom calming oil blend which was an experience in itself. I felt like I was purchasing a magic potion and even went back a second time later in the week for more. If you want a souvenir that's a little bit different, maybe a little witchy, and definitely memorable, this is a cool place to shop. My only reason for the one-star deduction is that the staff could be more welcoming overall. Once I tracked someone down to ask questions I had a good experience but I was not greeted by anyone or approached by anyone even when I was clearly looking for a particular item. read more

The customer service i got for the older gentleman with white hair, was just above and beyond, and he had no problem offering great advice and answering questions. While I love going here to look around, the experience is never a pleasant one. I've been maybe 10 times, and each time I feel like I'm an inconvenience to the staff and that I have no place being in there. As someone who's worked in retail for 9 years, I get it. I came in to show my father the great little place that helps me make my own tea blends. Unfortunately the girl that "helped" us was clearly way to important and busy to actually help us. She refused to make us a blend stating that the store is "medicinal" (???!!) and ended up selling us a pre-made tea, never giving us eye contact and continuing her side work the entire time. Every question was received as if we were total idiots and it pained her to have to answer. I know this place is a faceless corporation and a huge mega store so finding anyone to help you is like trying to find an open dentist on Labor Day. If you are lucky enough to locate what seems like two employees in this expanse of faceless capitalism , there is no way on Gods green earth they can even be bothered to walk 50 isles to show you to the product your looking for. I get it. These poor people are underpaid, over worked, and can barely afford the essential oils and Dr. Broner's peppermint soap necessary to keep them in good standings with the Hippie Wicca association of America. I don't blame them for being bothered by my demanding questions about the correct blends of Rose hip, lavender, arnica, and almond oil to cure a rather private rash. Or babbling ons about combining Palo Santo and Dragon blood in my new age incense recipe. I'm sure they are dealing with micromanaging, overburdening, and inadequate middle managers who could care less if they need to leave a few minutes early to take their very sick children children to the doctor for a potential life saving cure. I wish them well and hope they too can find the strength to break out of this vicious cycle, find work that is meaningful, and will bring them much joy in their lives. I want to run into them again someday as a customer while they are working in a small independent shop tucked away in the corner of a storied city public market, where they have the time and space to not only want to answer my questions, but actually help find the goods and services I seek. Goods and services that allow me to find my own peace and harmony on my journey through this little bubble of weirdness know as plant earth. I'm really sad to give this place a low rating because I love going here and the atmosphere is great, but like others have said the staff are terribly rude. When my friend and I entered the store they were standing in the middle talking and one girl made a comment about customers always interrupting or something. So immediately I felt uncomfortable and didn't do much browsing. When I went to check out they were still talking and ignored me until I basically had to move past one of them and set my things on the counter. The girl who had made the rude comment then proceeded to tell me about how they were talking about their genitals? It felt like an attempt to shock and upset me. Idk that's very weird. Overall I felt unwelcome, like a burden, and like I was being sneered at. Idk I probably won't make the trek downtown for this shop anymore. Ive been a regular for more than a year, but I'd rather take my business elsewhere after this incident. It's not worth it. read more

I stopped in to browse their tarot deck selection. I have to concur with the other reviews who were given bad customer service. I spent about 15 minutes in the store, walked by several employees, and yet was not acknowledged by any of them even once. No one greeted me as I entered, nobody offered to assist me with the tarot decks (which are messily layered in a glass case that bowls are displayed on top of, making it difficult to see the selection and prices, and obviously I can't look at the decks themselves or even make a selection without the assistance of an employee), and nobody said a parting word to me as I left. Overall, the lack of customer experience made me feel pretty unwelcome as a potential customer in the store. I don't understand how a business located in Pike Place can survive without a higher standard of customer service. I have a much less glamorous retail job and we set a better bar than this. They have lots of incense and herbs and oils, but other than that their selection is pretty slim pickings. I would say their tarot collection seems fair in size, but mostly because they have duplicates of most decks (and the vast majority of which I found ugly and/or tacky). Couldn't comment on the prices of them because I only saw like two price stickers in the whole thing. Their incense seems slightly cheaper than what I paid at Vajra from what I remember, however, they do not allow you to open the packages and they have no samples. That, coupled with the sheer amount of incense they've packed into a smallish corner, make it nearly impossible to discern what any of the individual scents actually smell like, so I would only buy your incense here if you have smelled it before. They don't have much in the way of incense holders, which was a bummer for me as I'm in the market for a new one. Their miscellania (jewelry, crystals, figurines, etc) for the most part seemed tacky to me, and I will emphasize the selection of this stuff is SUPER small. I might return here to stock up on incense, but only after I smell it somewhere else first. I wouldn't personally buy anything else here (but I'm not interested in their trademark herbs and oils, so if that's what you're after, feel free to disregard my review). read more

Really excited to find this little apothecary. I've been on a hunt for long lasting, true patchouli oil and I found it! I put some one at noon and I am still getting whiffs of sweet patchouli 9 hours later. Very cozy shop, filled to the brim with goodies. I could do major financial damage here. Teas, books, tarot, bath soaks, essential oils, Nepalese lanterns, incense, jewelry, soaps...they have everything. I found the staff initially stand offish but after a while in the store they warmed up. I'm really excited to try out their different bath soaks when I get home. I'd have to say that this is quite possibly the best shop that the Pike Place Market has to offer. There's so much to see inside this place it's ridiculous, and quite intimidating for the first time visitor. It's hard to believe that they were able to cram all that stuff into such a little store! They have shelves upon shelves of vitamins, incense, oils, candles, herbs, smudge sticks, incense burners, soaps, shampoos, mortar and pestles, prayer scrolls, tarot and oracle cards, salts, prayer beads, jewelry, bottles that have dropper and spritzer tops, vials with screw caps, and books covering a wide array of topics such as: reiki/energy healing, herbalism, witchcraft, voodoo, spellwork with oils and incense, astrology, religion, high magick, etc. They also have resident readers who rotate around on a schedule (different readers come in on different days), who are also very friendly and inviting and are always available to offer you some insight into your problems. The staff is friendly, the merchandise is amazing, and the pricing is fair. All in all, my shopping experience here was perfect, and you can bet I will be coming here every time I visit Seattle. While I listed the price range as "Moderate," I think that the stuff here is very fairly priced. Just because something costs a lot it doesn't make it expensive, in my opinion. You get great quality for what you pay for at this store, and that's a claim that I can make being a low-paid sailor in the United States Navy. read more

Leo helped me, reminding me what great customer service looks like in NYC (I'll give a hint, it doesn't seem to be friendly, even if it is). He spent quite a while with me, mixed up some herbs to put in my neti pot, had me try a super-high-test menthol inhaler, gave me some other things to think about and try.
