My manicure is perfect, but no more eyebrow adventures here for me. I was the only person there (which is highly unusual) and the employees were chilling, even sleeping, in the pedicure chairs. I said three times I wanted eyebrows and a manicure, but they went ahead with the manicure first. About halfway through, a woman comes in apologizing for being so late and suddenly the place springs into action. I'm guessing they figured she wasn't going to show and that I had all the time in the world to get my brows done, but suddenly they rushed me and my wet nails into the eyebrow room right away. The most disappointing part of this story is that Kim does eyebrows, and I'm pretty sure she's the owner, or at least the boss in some capacity. Not only did she not use the big magnifying thing to get stray hairs (I had to do that at home later) but she got WAX IN MY HAIR. I felt a tug, and then more tugging, and I tried to sit up and felt it pull, and immediately there was baby oil being put on my hair... when I was able to sit up, she pointed to a drop of wax on the table and said, "See? Just a LIIIIITTLE bit." Um, still a little bit too much. Next time I'll try Salon Louis on Newbury, where my friend Jamie raves about the brow threading. I'll keep you posted. read more

Ive been seeing Annie for about 4 years now. Shes amazing. Her pedicures are so thorough. I like the feeling of my cuticles to be extra clean and she goes in. The salon is very clean and they've updated their sanitation standards which definitely reflects pricing and worth it. Teke Nails used to be my go-to mani/pedi spot. Unfortunately, after several bad experiences I have to bid farewell. On my most recent trip they sat me in one of the pedicure chairs right away. They were very busy and the scene was pretty chaotic but after a few minutes in the chair one of the girls turned on the water (lukewarm) for soaking my feet. After 20 minutes, I asked how much longer it would be where they said "you are next" but I told them the water was cold which received little reaction. Another 5-10 minutes passed and the water was slightly drained and warmed with hot water. As more people came in for mani/pedis no one was turned away or even alerted of the wait even though there weren't any technicians available for a while. The girl doing my pedi the girl was RACING to finish, hardly scrubbing, did not fully rub in the lotion (zero leg massage) and then did not fully cover my nail with polish. When finished she brought me over to the manicure station and then started a pedicure for another girl! I asked if someone was going to do my manicure and she looked around, sighed and came back to me again RACING to finish. (The other girl ended up leaving because no one came back to her!) Less than 24 hours later two of my nails have already chipped. I know this is 'discount' mani/pedi place but I always counted on Teke's for great work and service in the past. Previous missteps include: coming in and sitting in the waiting area as they take customers who came in after me, coming in with a friend (off-peak time/day) and having my pedicure FINISHED before they even started my friend's feet. I am sorry to give them such a poor review as I have been a loyal customer for 8 years but lately the service and quality of work is more consistently off than on :-( read more

I have to get a manicure every three weeks because I compulsively pick at the skin and cuticles around my nails! It is so frustrating to go to new nail salon and they refuse to cut the skin-which is what I pay attention to the most. This place is a bit cramped and definitely isn't the boutiquey experience I usually get when I'm getting a mani pedi, but for $10, I got a really good manicure. The lady who did it was kind, attentive, and didn't get frustrated when I asked her to focus on certain areas. If you need a good, quick, cheap manicure- I suggest it. read more

For a $35 mani/pedi on Charles St., you really can't go wrong with Tekes. I have tried some of the nail places near by on Cambridge Street, which offer similar prices, but the value just doesn't compare. My experience here was far better. My pedi has lasted weeks and still looks perfect. My mani on the other hand chipped fairly quickly, but I chalk that up to working at a restaurant, which isn't conducive to having pretty nails. Tekes has a great selection of OPI and Essie polishes, they do a good job, give nice hand/feet rubdowns, and my nail tech was super helpful when I was trying to get my stuff together to leave. I don't know what all these people are saying but the place is a very small and compact environment, but it shows how hard they work and after I had my nails done, they were so pretty and done very thoroughly. If all these people are going to leave negative and unhelpful reviews don't bother. If you don't like the place simply don't go again, everyone has different experiences. read more

Teke has little stickers on the windows and doors saying "Yelp likes us" or something to that affect. I didn't like them so much. The foot tub didn't look very clean to me, and I asked for them to please clean it. They obliged , using a spray bottle from the dollar store to clean it. An English speaking staff person assured me that it was just stained. My daughter, who was also getting a pedicure, tub was stained as well. I was asked if I wanted razor, to which I declined. After that, they spoke to each other only, and only in their native language. RUDE!!! Overall, I thought the salon was dingy. there was a dried out poinsettia sitting on the table with one red leaf left on it. It's May not January or February. The windows were dirty, and the space was tight uncomfortable, The pedicure was ok, but I don't think I would go back there. I just didn't like the atmosphere. Even though I absolutely hate waiting for anything (especially food), it's a little alarming when a nail salon is essentially empty on a Saturday morning. Like HELLO where are all of the RECH Beacon Hill women getting their nails did? To be fair, my manicure and pedicure were totally fine. I could have used a little more pampering, especially with no particular rush... but my nails look absolutely fine. The color selection is decent, though some of the polishes could use a fresh replacement - they look like they've been around since the grand opening of Teke. I approved of the $33 price tag, but really got irked when the woman picked up her cell phone in the middle of my pedicure. Listen I just shaved my LEGS for you so as not to cut up your hands - the least you can do is take that phone call when you finish. It was no one important anyway. My manicure was decent but they the lady did not completely remove my old polish on a couple of nails and could have done a better job cleaning nail polish off of my cuticles. Went in on a Sunday evening (thank goodness for a nail salon open on Sundays) and they fit me right in and did a beautiful job on my nail fill. She knew exactly what I wanted when I asked for my usual Essie Mademoiselle and my nails looked gorgeous for Monday morning. And the location made for a gorgeous was to and from the salon too. I've been coming here since I was about twelve years old, so have a solid twelve years of attendance under my belt. I really only used to come here with my mom for an eyebrow wax once every two months or so, but for the past year have come in for an occasional mani/pedi. Prices are GREAT for the Charles St. location. At only $33 for a mani/pedi, you get a very nice service done. Manis usually last roughly a week for me, while pedis can last me up to a month if taken care of. I have had very good experiences here, and Kim, the owner, is sweet and a perfectionist! She is very kind, but professional, and pays very close attention to what she is doing. Her eyebrow waxes are on the whole, very good. I'm considering going for a bikini wax this summer but I'm a huge baby, so we'll see :). I took off one star purely because it does get a little awkward sitting there while the lovely people there speak in Korean to each other, undoubtedly sometimes about their clientele. But that's fairly standard, and they're so nice it doesn't matter! I definitely recommend it. read more

I have been trying to find place to get good gel/shellac/whatever manicures. I have gone several places that simply do not do a good job, and they do not last as long. I get the gel manicures because you pay more for them to last a long time (2+ weeks), so when they aren't done well it defeats the purpose and is a waste of money. I have gotten about 6 gel manicures in a row at Teke (from several different people) and they have all been flawless. They are also reasonably priced ($25 for gel). They are also always friendly to me. I have also gotten a few pedicures from Teke Nails, and they are decent. They do use the razor if you want to, which I know some people don't like. My one critique of their pedicures is that they aren't very big on the massage/using fancy oils/rubs or anything, it is pretty standard; however they do a good job on the polish and it always lasts a long time. read more

Small Cozy Place. The nail tech was so aggressive on taking my acrylics off, I had to tell her to be gentle on the machine since I jumped like 3 times in pain. Nail tech seem to be rushing and was not friendly. After I requested her to removed the nail polish she agreed, but I still got 3 polish stain on my skin. How awful! It's no wonder this place has been around for years and years. Tucked in an unassuming-looking Charles St. entrance, the salon delivers Beacon Hill quality for suburban prices. $10 manicure anyone? I started going solely because I work in the neighborhood, but have been a consistent customer ever since. They deliver consistent quality service, and their hours (open until 8pm) are super-convenient as well. Yesterday I came in to fix a broken acrylic nail (yes, I bite them and thus trying this whole acrylic thing), and not only did the manager Kim attend to me, but she also made sure all my nails are "up to standards", re-filed and re-painted them, all for a small charge of a refill. She spent considerable time on me even though she didn't have to, just to make sure my nails were up to my satisfaction. I greatly appreciate customer service when it comes naturally like that. I tend to judge a pedicure on two main parts: callus removal and massage. Living in the city means that I walk a lot and my feet tend to be both sore and in rough shape. The pedicure ($25) included a callus remover gel followed by the "cheese grater of shame" and a pumice. It really did the trick, and without any discomfort. The massage was excellent compared to my experiences at neighboring salons. Firms, consistent, and super relaxing for my weary feet. I was pleasantly surprised to find that a hot stone and oil massage was also included. Perfecto! Helen did a great job. Large polish selection and an ATM available on-site for tipping (cash only). Credit cards are welcomed otherwise, and punch cards are available (10 visits = free eyebrow). A couple downsides to Teke: The salon itself is a little cramped, but that comes with the Charles Street territory. It is not handicap accessible, as it is on the 2nd floor. I didn't see any sterilizing occurring while I was there- that's not to say that they don't keep the salon clean, but I always prefer to see the tools come out of a sterilized package, solution, etc. The technician who was doing my pedicure was also the only one who had the ability to talk on the phone with clients. Therefore, she had to consistently leave my station to take appointments, while her colleague sat by. I could have don't without that, but not a huge deal. Pet-Friendly...always a plus. read more

I've only had my nails done at maybe 2 other places in the area, and this is by far my favorite. Mostly because I don't feel like I'm going to pass out from nail polish fumes like some other places. Lots of colors and good, careful work makes this a very reliable salon. Somehow I ALWAYS manage to mess up my nails within 5 minutes, but I'm pretty sure that's not their fault. I have received a few shellac manicures in the past few months and this has been my favorite salon for shellac so far. The tech listened to everything I asked for and delivered. My shellac manicure was done on 6/14 and the polish is still perfect, not a single chip. I'm ready to get it redone only because my nails are growing out (they grow fast). I paid 30 +tip for a french shellac manicure and they removed the previous shellac manicure which can take a while. The way they removed the shellac would be my one con, they had me dip my finger tips in pure acetone and leave them in there for awhile. I went to another salon in Boston where they wrapped each nail with a cotton ball soaked in acetone and tin foil. I liked that way better as my whole fingertip wasn't marinating in acetone. You can use credit cards, but can't tip on credit cards. I think this is pretty standard at all types of salons these days. read more

Clean and small (which I like) however they charge $35 for a gel manicure and my most recent gel manicure here chipped after one day. I had plans to go back and ask the woman to please fix the one nail, but before I knew it six more were chipped and breaking as well. Also filed my nails WAY too square. I like Tekes because I feel they consistently do the best job in my experience. A great selection of colors, a little bit better of a pedicure with hot stones and massage, and overall lasts incredibly long. I love Teke Nails! I have been visiting Helen at Teke's since September 2007. I get a pedicure every 10-14 days and I wouldn't think of going to anyone else. In fact, I hate when I need one out of town and can't go to Teke's! Kim does a great eyebrow wax and pinch hits for Helen doing an awesome pedicure if she isn't available. To the naysayers who said they have to wait, if you walk in and it's packed (because they are so awesome!) you should ask if you should come back at a better time. I try to call ahead and make an appointment. They'll give you the straight answer and ask you to return. They always tell me if they're too busy and tell me to come back in 20 or 30 minutes or 2 hours if they know they can't give me a great pedi. Outchy!!! I bleeded because the person rubbed the stone again my good skin. I said.. No and turn my foot and she had no idea until I pinched the wound and pointed at it. She forced my foot into the tank which we all know may or may not be clean enough for you to put a foot w open wound in. I refused the exfoliator because nobody would want that on your an open wound. It's seriously a problem when they don't understand than more than 5 English words and don't have the common sense not to run your good skin w a stone or not to cut your skin that's not cuticles!! I tired Teke's Nails for the first time last week because I've had some subpar experiences with other nail salons in the area. I was very pleasantly surprised. I got a pedicure and a gel manicure for $50 and they both looked great. The massage with the hot stones during my pedicure was great too. My gel manicure is also holding up really well (a problem I've had at other salons) and she was very careful when painting them. The only negative is that the employees weren't super friendly but I didn't find them to be rude either. read more

I love Teke Nails! My favorite time to get a mani-pedi is after long stressful days at work; but I don't get out of work until 7ish and it was not easy finding a salon that stayed open late enough to accommodate me. Thank heavens I stumbled upon Teke Nails, which is open until 8:30! Teke Nails is not a frou-frou place; if you are looking for a total spa experience... go to a day spa. This is a perfect place for a girl with a busy schedule to get good quality mani-pedis at a reasonable price. I have braved storms and the T to get to Teke Nails because of their customer service. I could literally walk in and not say a word the entire time; they know exactly what color nail polish I wear, that I don't like my cuticles cut, etc. I also don't recall the staff at any other nail places using oil and a plastic bag, putting my socks (which might not be Downy fresh at this point in the day) and boots on, or helping me into my coat and buttoning all the necessary buttons. I recently moved to Boston for college and had to find a new place to get my nails done. I tried a few places around downtown but they were too expensive/too far etc. I had given up on finding a nail place but then I decided to give Teke's a chance and I am so glad I did! I went in on a Friday afternoon and sat down right away. I got a pink and white acrylic set and the lady who did them was super sweet and did an amazing job. My nails look AMAZING! Also, for the full set and the pink and white powder, and the gel top coat it was only $50! Which is a really great price. Also, they accept debit/credit cards but the tip is cash only (I only had my debit card and $5, I felt so bad because she did an amazing job). Anyway, the ladies were all very friendly, the place was nice, prices were reasonable, and I am very happy with my nails. It is good to know my nails will be taken care of for the next four years that I'm at school here. I will definitely be back to Teke's (with cash for a tip)! read more

Used to go here all the time when Kim was owner and then Helen. The place has gone down hill ever since & I am sad to write this review, since I have been coming here for 15 years. First, I walked in on a Sat morning at 11am - and 1 person only was working - she told me to wait 5 min for another person to do my nails. I waited 20 min then asked where is other person, and they came in 5 min later. So I waited 25 min for someone bc there was 1 person working on a Saturday!?! The lady that did my nails did an average job, did not speak English at all, nor did she understand how I wanted the shape of my nails. At the end, I was instructing her about how long my nails needed to dry & that she had to put alcohol on at the end to rub them (bc I got gels). Lastly, their gel manicures went from $22 to $25 to $28 and now they are $35. A big increase for not getting anything in return. In fact I got someone that was slow and average. I highly doubt I will ever return to Teke's Nails again. It's no wonder, they are empty & other salons close by are filled with people. read more
