Tecalitlan is about 6 blocks from my home. My family and I were at another store, we were hungry and we decided to give them a try. We were Blown Away! The food, and I mean EVERY DISH, was absolutely incredible. Very delicious. Flavorful, portions are filling, even the horchata was to die for. SO Good! I don't know how to describe the refried beans. We started off with a round of drinks -- they were good, nothing particularly memorable, but hit the spot. For appetizers, we tried the quesabirria crunch, which ended up being my favorite of the night -- super crunchy, flavorful, and definitely worth ordering again. This place is in the NEW CITY complex so it was the perfect pre-movie meal spot. The food came out fast so if you only have 30-45 minutes before your show, this is a solid option. We like coming here to grab a quick meal before catching a movie at AMC new city. The foot is seriously very solid. We get the steak nachos every single time bc they are fire, our absolute favorite. We've tried most things here and they're all great: tacos, enchiladas, tortas, tostadas, fajitas, all have been delicious. Service is just aight, sometimes they're slower than I'd like them to be, but that's okay. Oddly, the margaritas here are not great. They def use a margarita mix, which I don't usually judge, but you can't call yourself a margarita house and use a mix out of a bottle. Food was fine, no complaints there. The service was lacking once we got there, didn't get waters until 15 minutes in and barely checking in. We spent 2 1/2 hours there because there were no check ins and when they finally came towards the end of our meal, we just wanted the check. My friend simply mentioned it because I had to show my ID when I ordered a margarita. We had a bit of a challenge finding this restaurant because it's actually located in a courtyard of a shopping center-like structure. A big plus of the location is that it provides validated parking in a garage. The restaurant is bright, cheerful, modern, clean and has a great vibe. There is outdoor seating but we opted to eat indoors. The food was very good. My husband had a steak burrito chock full of delicious, tender steak. I opted for the Quesabirria tacos. O M G - these are the bomb. Taco shells filled with cheese and tender, flavorful brisket are then fried until shells are super crispy. So so good. The dish came with meat broth for dipping. These tacos are my new obsession. Guacamole, salsa and the pitcher of frozen margaritas were also delicious. Even though we were stuffed, we split a coconut flan which was big enough for sharing and did not disappoint --it was with every calorie. There aren't many restaurants near the AMC by the North and Clybourn L station, but I'm glad we stopped here. The food and vibes were exactly what we were looking for. The restaurant had a decent crowd, which we took as a good sign. I love trying different Mexican restaurants, both in Chicago and the suburbs, and trying to pick my favorite. This place is definitely high on my list. We ordered beef and chicken enchiladas with red sauce as well as two steak tacos with rice and beans. I was most excited to try the spiked horchata (server recommended with whiskey instead of tequila) and it didn't disappoint although a little sweet as expected. Tacos were fine - the Al pastor was probably the best, the birria was actually pretty dry and the chorizo wasn't very flavorful. Tecalitlan is perfect for large groups of people to dine. The service was terrible. The waiter was inattentive and unhelpful. The food took a long time to be prepared, even though the restaurant was not crowed. I felt that we were rushed to eat and leave around 8:15 PM. They didn't close until 9. The food was just okay. I've had similar quality tacos at smaller, local restaurants for half the price. The tacos were very dry and unflavored. I ordered 4 tacos which came to around 20 dollars plus tax and gratuity. Ordered 1 taco dinner, and another one 3 tacos with just a side or rice.The tacos were okay, for the price it just isn't worth it. I was kind of surprised how small a side order of rice was. I guess I am just used to being spoiled at other places I don't know. While the sides might have been smaller they did load the tacos with the meat. She said I think so. I said LEEEGGOOOO!!!! We pulled up and figured out how to get to it. Had a parking structure, that was cool. They could do a little better with the signage, couldn't find it at 1st. I asked a cat who was cleaning and pointed out the way!! The hospitality was great as always!! We were warmly welcomed and shown to a table. The waitress and table attendant was on it!! She greeted us and answered our questions and took our drink order. We looked up and water was on the table and our drinks were being sat down. We ordered and the food came just as fast. It was like a time machine!!! Shhheeessshhhhhh!!! The owners and wait staff are beyond friendly and upbeat and will do anything in their power to ensure you enjoy your visit. Each time I've gone there have been several tables speaking Spanish to the employees which is always a good indication that the food is up to par. Great steak burrito. I got it to go -- it's a little pricey but as you can see the burrito portion is LARGE. But to be honest it wasn't filled with a lot of steak -- I was mostly just happy with the size and not the quality. Two burrito dinner, a nachos and diet coke was 60 dollars.. also again this was to go which was quite a shock when paying... over the phone I SWORE I heard 42-45 which is super understandable. I wouldn't mind the price as much if the nacho portion was substantial but as you can see.... when I opened the box as I got home it blew my mind. I was shocked because of how generous the portions were for the burrito. The inside of the restaurant is super trendy and cute and I can definitely see my gfs coming here for a margarita taco night!
