Absolutely awesome accommodations…read more Well first you have a lovely and very private space to call your own. Combine that with a very warm and friendly host (Sharon) and our stay could not have been better. The Rainbow Lookout met all our needs and had everything we needed in the kitchen, plenty of towels for bath and beach, beach chairs, ice chest, and extra scuba equipment. We could walk down the private road to catch the sunrise; we drank our coffee In the hottub and we swam in the very nice lagoon style pool every single day. When we return to Maui we will definitely come back. We loved the home and surrounding areas and enjoyed the natural setting as well. If you don't like nature and want to be pampered by hotel staff then don't come here. If you don't mind seeing a gecko scramble across the rocks, then you'll be ok here. If you want to see what it's like to actually live like a Maui denizen then this is the place for you. Sharon could not have been more responsive and accommodating. The fruit and bread and eggs and wine got us off to a great start! Thanks for everything! We had an absolute blast. Stayed: June 2018

Huelo is located on Maui's rugged north shore, 20 minutes east of the small town of Paia on the…read moreroad to Hana. Since you're 20 minutes' drive from the nearest town, this place is super-secluded, but offers all of the amenities you could imagine. The road down to the place is only partially paved (last time we were there in 2003, anyway,) and so you have a very slow, bumpy ride down. We first did it in some kind of crapmobile rental, and whenever we tried to take the road too quickly, residents along the way come out and give you the stink-eye. Not worth busting your axle anyway, so take it slow. Huelo Point Lookout is just about the last place, down the last driveway on the last road as you make your way off the Hana Highway and down toward the coast. Some of the cottages on the property offer ocean views (the main house, for example,) but for the most part the coast is hidden from view, so if you're looking for beach front, this is not for you. What we loved about Huelo is that it's much more of a rapidly changing environment than getting a cookie-cutter chain hotel place in Wailea, Kaanapali or in Kapalua. It's a more rugged and unexpected experience with lots of wind, quick, fleeting rainstorms and amazing tranquility and seclusion. No kids in the communal pool yelling all day, no one next door making noise. You literally feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. Both times we have stayed there, we opted for the Haleakala Cottage, which is basically a studio apartment (free standing, no immediate neighbors) with a full kitchen, patio, its own Jacuzzi and the best part: a FANtastic outdoor shower. The small office, with 2 sets of washers and dryers plus all the linens you could ever need (including fabulous, huge beach towels) is just around the corner from this cottage, and me being a laundry freak, I was in heaven (guests have free access to the laundry facilities anytime.) Owners Jeff and Sharyn Stone and their sweet son, Kai, have gone out of their way to provide their guests with privacy and seclusion, without being so absent that you don't feel well taken care of. The kitchen is stocked with plenty of fresh, whole-bean coffee, and you can also order special treats like additional flowers or chocolates for your arrival (my husband surprised me with this on our honeymoon.) In all, I think we've spent a total of almost 3 weeks here over our two trips to Hawaii, and I would stay there again in a snap. The only perceived drawback might be the distance from the place to the nearest sign of civilization, but keep in mind that Maui is only so big, so any place, including Hana or even Wailea on the southern west coast is only 40-60 minutes drive away. And when you're in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, on vacation, what do you have more of than leisure time? Recommendations: - Take your watches off when you arrive and put them away someplace. Go with the light and rise when you want, eat when you want, be active when you want and sleep when you want. - Bring some food in from one of the places in Paia to keep around -- fruit, milk, etc. - daily supplies that will keep you going since you're a good 20 minutes from the grocery store, and driving that road at night can be precarious. - I'm going to write a review of this as well, but the Paia Fish Market, right on the main corner of town is unbelievably good. I recommend the fish and chips with lots of vinegar and Tabasco. Ugh. I am drooling thinking about it. - Pack a picnic and head to Hana for the day. Take every opportunity to turn left as you head out and get to the coast for amazing, out-of-the-way waterfalls. Ignore signs for private property if you're particularly adventurous (which we were.)

Owners Eva and Jim are awesome and have operated the bed and breakfast for many years now and it was such a pleasure to meet them during my stay as well as meet their family and super cute energetic smaller terrier dogs. I was in the Papaya Suite and definitely plenty of space, with a separate bedroom, kitchen bathroom, and the living room! And did I mention, the great breakfast food and other snacks in the provided basket as well as fresh fruit, cereal, milk and other items inside the refrigerator and freezer? Definitely saved me time and money from having to drive to the nearest bakery or market! Yes, this is a real Bed & Breakfast and definitely worth every dollar! There are three other suites available for booking and there is usually no minimum stay required except during certain times of the year like the holiday season or special local events, for instance. Also, guests are offered a 10% discount if they pay in check/cash versus charging to their credit/debit card, and I opted to provide Eva with the check. You will also find two common areas, and one of them is right outside the Papaya Room on the ground level where there are other tables, chairs, and a BBQ. The other common area is upstairs on the lanai, where there are more tables and chairs, and ultimately a lovely view of Kihei and the West Maui Mountains! Definitely would love to come back and stay at Maui What A Wonderful World Bed and Breakfast for the next stay in Kihei and South Maui!

Our hosts were Eva and Jim and they were more than generous with the breakfast and amenities at their home. During our stay in the Pineapple suite, the restroom/kitchenette/bedroom were organized and had plenty of space for two people. It was easy to feel at home within the first few minutes after settling in. Eva was easily accessible for questions about the island/ local recommendations and was more than accommodating for our breakfast options (fresh local fruit, pastries, coffee, etc.). There was also onsite laundry, swim gear, and sunscreen/mosquito repellent. Whatever Eva was managing with guests, we also observed that Jim kept up with quick repairs/maintenance on the property. My partner's favorite part of this stay was the fruit and their dogs!!! I too loved their fur babies in addition to the view from the second floor deck (phenomenal during sunset). We are truly impressed with the hospitality and welcome that these seasoned hosts provided.

It's treacherous and very very steep. We woke up everyday to watch the sunrise. Although you can't watch the sunrise from this side but it's still very beautiful. Kutira is very gracious and such a great host. They keep this place immaculate. I noticed the details like everything is dusted and clean. I love that they compost, recycle and feed their chickens with scraps. I love that there is no TV and we really enjoyed the sounds of the tropics. Me and two friends stayed at the Thai Houli place for 6 days and it was very comfortable. Be warned though, there is no AC and the geckos come out at night. For any sort of trails in the area, you must have hiking shoes or something with traction. No flip flops. You will regret it. The volunteers here are friendly and come from all over. There are great amenities that will cost extra. Like the yoga ($10) and Thursday evening Sound Baths ($25), Beach Towels ($3), coconut keifer ($13) So be sure to bring cash for tips and extras.

My husband and I needed a quiet break from life to help our marriage and create harmony in our souls - the opposite happened at this place. Worst of all, these people advertised to have people vacation at their campground when the fires hit Maui. They did not open their doors to locals to give them a place to stay. They encouraged travelers to come vacation - even after Ed Sniffen, Hawaii's director of transportation strongly discouraged travel due to needing airlines and roads cleared to help aid people in need. I would give 0 stars if I could.

The B&B part is a spacious guest house with a living room, bedroom with small kitchenette, and an interesting bathroom arrangement...the toilet and shower are in a glassed in enlcosure looking out over the jungle! The estate is spacious and has some incredible views of the ocean and cliffs south of Hana. It's not a beach resort but there are already plenty of those around Maui and this place offers something unique and special. The best part of this place is how incredibly private it is, there are no other tourists around. Arabella is a lovely and gracious hostess who is quite interesting to talk to. There are a few minor problems...lots of gnats in the bathroom, a toaster oven that only half works, a very excitable puppy (who Arabella is happy to restrain if she gets too rambunctious), and a lack of a stove/oven. Still, there is a functioning propane grill, a rice cooker, and a microwave so it's possible to make a tasty meal for yourself on the premises, just do come prepared. These are actually relatively minor problems, I highly recommend this space and will definitely come back next time I visit Maui.

I did not mind having no TV as this is a great place to unplug and unwind and the oceanview from our lanai is nature's entertainment. The beach that you can walk to isn't much of a sandy beach but is swimmable although can be rough at times. Aware of what a mosquito magnet I am, I did not want an outdoor shower or hot tub so opted for the Iwa Suite which had a pretty impressive shower. The room was comfortable but as others have mentioned, is dated and you can see wear and tear. Since you are in a tropical environment, you will probably see small ants and even a gecko in your room which we kindly escorted out to the lanai. Thankfully, did not encounter any spiders in the room although they are around property. The fridge, microwave, and plates came in handy to enjoy our included breakfast and fruits we picked up from the fruit stands close by as well as takeout on our lanai. Quiet although you will hear your neighbors, safe enough that you don't need to lock your doors and a wonderful place to unwind but be aware that is it rustic.

Our room in particular had an outdoor bath tub and shower, which really added to the ambiance of the stay. Staring out onto the bay and black sand beach in the tub will be a memory to last a lifetime. The room was no frills in the best of ways. There was no TV or luxury amenities, but it was impeccably clean, had an amazing mattress, a small kitchenette to reheat leftovers from the food trucks down the street, and ocean views complete with beach access. We have zero regrets spending a couple nights in Hana because we really enjoyed the off the beaten path vibes of the area. Lots of people just come out for the day, but I would have felt so rushed. Spending a couple nights was the perfect way to experience the area because it allowed us to enjoy the slower pace. Our host, John, was super kind and knowledgeable about how to spend our time with great suggestions. One of which was to get Huli Huli chicken on the beach, which was super delicious with great waterfront views. Another that the botanical gardens were worth the side trip and we totally agree. We also learned he has a deep connection to the community because of the magazine article included in the information book placed in our room. What we loved about Hana was the unpolished and unapologetic authentic vibes. Both nights we fell asleep with the patio window open welcoming cool ocean breezes and rhythmic waves sounds while we slept. Now we're sitting on the beach in Kapalua with the Disneyland-ish resort persona wishing we were back in Hana. We hope to be back sometime soon John. In the meantime, go huskies.
