At some point, the owners sold off each unit and now every unit there is individually owned and managed thru Vacasa . com (at least that is who you end up booking with when you go to Mahina Surf's website to make a reservation. Therefore, amenities will vary by unit. There is a review here from June '23 stating her unit provided everything (beach chairs, cooler, etc.). She was lucky her unit provided that, but those are not standard amenities the property provides. My unit (#221) had some old random pool noodles and boogie board. Maui is gorgeous and this property is just as beautiful in the photos and is right on the ocean, but just know, your beach access is a beach full of rocks. It's not your regular swimming beach. There's nowhere you can take a stroll on the sand. Either way, most ppl will drive to see all the other wonderful beaches in Maui. Units there are only 1 or 2 bed. 2 bed units are all on 2nd floor. You get a full kitchen with standard amenities (dishes, cookware, utensils, etc.) Some units like mine had cooking spices in the cupboards, leftover pantry items like coffee, sugar as well as plastic containers food prep dishes. Property has a nice pool. No umbrellas (they get blown away by wind) there but plenty of lounge chairs and a few tables. You are equipped with ONE set of bath &beach towels & bed linens. That's it. So depending on how long you will stay, you will need to wash. There's co-op machines. Our unit provided about 5 loads worth of laundry detergent & tabs for the dishwasher. You need to be careful and read about what each unit provides before you book, because it tells you. They DO NOT provide any cleaning supplies. SO BRING YOUR OWN. I brought a 3oz TSA approved spray bottle of Formula 409 and Clorox wipes. You will need to clean because of bugs. There's a Safeway (Vons) nearby & a Costco close to the airport. Costco will have the best prices. Also tons of ABC stores (Hawaii-based general store) where you can get just about everything--but EXPENSIVE. The units have louvered windows and a huge glass sliding door to the balcony/lanai so there's a lot of openness, hence bugs. You may find bug traps (ours had them). It's Hawaii, there's bugs. Anyway, you really can't get away with keeping everything closed up because none of the units there have any AC. I went in July and it was quite hot. There is almost always a breeze, so it's tolerable, but just so. I've also been there in November, but that was 20 years ago, so with climate changes, who knows now lol. Vacasa also provided a few hotel-style toiletries like shampoo and lotion, but bring your own from home because buying at the store is very pricey. A small package of baby wipes at the store was almost $10 for example! Nevertheless, it is Hawaii and almost everything will be double if not more than the mainland.

Best of all, the beach is literally about 10 steps away, making it easy to relax and watch the honu (sea turtles) during sunset, such a special experience. The unit came well equipped with a king-size bed, a full kitchen, microwave, a fridge, and all the basics you'd need for a comfortable stay. We were also given two keys, which made it convenient to access the pool and hot tub. Our lanai had an amazing ocean view and became our favorite spot to enjoy meals and unwind. I've honestly never stayed anywhere that felt so peaceful and relaxing. While the property may look a bit dated, that's part of its Maui charm. We booked the room through Airbnb, but it's also available directly through My Perfect Stays. My only wish is that checkout were a bit later, 11am instead of 10am, since we had a red-eye flight home and a lot of time to fill on our last day. Still, an amazing stay overall that I'd happily return to.

Unfortunately, the description doesn't let you know of the 10 units in that building share one hot water tank that is located in the laundry room at the other end of the building. Which had really hot water as we went and tested. We had a W/D in our unit We had lack of hot water in the unit. It took 10 minutes to get the shower barely warm. No hot water in the bathroom sink. We hoped the dishwasher got warm to clean the dishes. We alerted Myperfectstays the next day of the issues. They said they would have someone come by and keep us updated. Nobody came by and no response received. Stained towels and cleaning wasn't great. We had friends staying in unit #107 and their dryer didn't work so they came and used ours. We've stayed many times in other resorts up and down the West side of Maui that were impeccably nice. We have stayed with this management company in the past with no problem. I spoke with the onsite management regarding the water issue is how I found out of the one hot water tank. She said she'd have Greg come by and check to see if it were a power surge? Really, no visit from Greg either. We've never given a bad review before but honesty is best. Hopefully they'll make some changes. Mahalo August/September 2026

There is so much beautiful, well maintained landscaping, several gas grills for cooking your dinner and a swimming pool. Lots of parking and most condos have an ocean view. I'll be generous with my 3 star rating because of this. My problem is the way they treat visitors. Background: The pandemic has hurt local musicians terribly. There have been few places for them to play and money has been tight for 2 years. Fortunately, the folks living at Kauhale Makai have recently gotten permission for Eric Gilliom to perform in the outdoor courtyard on Friday afternoons. Eric is a terrific musician and well loved on Maui. He has been so happy to be able to perform live for fans in this setting. We were also very excited to hear from friends at Kauhale Makai that we should come and enjoy the shows, too. It's been a long dry spell for us, too. We did enjoy a few of Eric's performances (music and hula) and we fed the tip can generously, along with the rest of the crowd, so Eric would have some folding money. But, before our first visit, we checked with the Kauhale Makai office about the parking rules. A nice lady said we could park in any parking stall as long as it didn't have a cone in it. There were only a few cones in the whole lot. Fast forward to today. We parked in a visitor parking spot that had a 2 hour limit. No problem, since Eric only played for 1.5 hours. What we didn't hear on the "coconut wireless" was that today's show was called off. We brought our chairs into a relatively empty courtyard. We found out that the show was canceled, but several residents and friends were assembled with their ukuleles and they were okay with us watching them jam. A couple of friends arrived in a few minutes and joined us. They decided to sit with us and talk story. A little while later, the sprinklers started doing their thing. We quickly got up and moved to a dry area. I suggested that we were getting the bum's rush because the sprinklers never erupted during one of the shows. Later, a resident told us that someone did turn them on because the 4 of us were sitting there. Gee, that's rude. A little while later, we decided to leave and a friend who lives there told us that several cars have parking tickets on their windshields. There it was. Not exactly a parking ticket, but a printed notice saying "PARKING IS RESERVED... CHECK IN WITH THE OFFICE... CAR WILL BE TOWED AT YOUR EXPENSE..." That was ugly, especially since I wasn't parked in a reserved spot. I was in a 2 hour visitor spot. And, we had been told that all parking was okay unless a cone was present. And, of course, the office had been closed for an hour. At least they didn't follow through with their towing option. That would have been nasty. Thanks, Kauhale Makai, for not releasing the hounds on us.

I want something that was pretty inexpensive but at the same time close enough to where I need to be. As mentioned before, out popped Airbnb and I decided to book it because it was the right location for me in North Kihei. Everything looked good in the listing so I booked with confidence. My stay here was very nice and it felt like a nice little place, which felt like it was almost like my home away from home (Oahu). The unit that was the Airbnb was located next to a pool within the complex. Unfortunately, I did not use the pool while I was here. Too bad though it would've been nice. Everything worked properly at the time of the stay. I even got to hear all the traffic up and down Kihei road. Best thing was that it was close to the Maui Bus line, so I could hop the bus back to Queen Kaahumanu Center after checking out. The property is large enough to have several buildings on site and is estimated to be a nice place to live on Maui. The process started with Airbnb and booked the listing about 2 months prior to arrival. Upon arrival, I received instructions on how to enter the unit and location. After accessing the unit, I felt right at home. No major problems occurred during my stay here in Kihei and the level of comfort was quite nice. It was very pleasant and quiet. The location in Kihei was very good. I let the host know I made it into the unit okay and upon check out, I informed the host too that I checked out and was on my way home. It was a nice escape to Maui and thankful that I found this listing. While it was a little bit pricey, you could split the payment into two affordable payments to make it less expensive. Can't complain too much though since you're in south Maui, for work or play, it's all good really! I paid about $325/night for 2 nights. Not exactly cheap but I was there for a half marathon event in the area. The overall experience here at the Kihei Bay Surf Resort was very good and picturesque. Definitely next to the ocean but you'd have to deal with the daily traffic coming and going Kihei. Things was good and I thought that it was cool and comfortable, especially when there was nothing really to say anything bad about. There was no visible air conditioning though. I did not know how to use the TV properly so I did not use that during my day. I also did not use the Wi-Fi, so I just use my phone network during my day. I use the freezer for ice cream and I liked the fact that there was ice cubes ready for use. Just had to refill the water into the tray and refreeze it. I used the refrigerator for leftover food during my stay. I did not use the stove because did not have to. For the most part, though, it was like home away from home but a place to rest before and after a half marathon event that started in Iao Valley in Wailuku and finished in Kihei, Maui. The bed itself was fairly comfortable and felt like it was a good nights sleep both nights I was there. If you want a good stay, consider coming to the Kihei Bay Surf. It's nice and safe here in Kihei. Across the street, you have direct access to the public beach. Kihei Bay Surf is located at 715 S Kihei Road on the north end of Kihei Road in Kihei, Maui. The prices fluctuate for the units, but you can get a decent price, based on your needs. There's at least 4 buildings on property, maybe more. Didn't count, but did see a pool during my stay. I'm kicking myself for not enjoying the pool when I was here, but that's a regret I will have. I believe the parking is free but I came by uber and departed by Maui Bus. There are bus stops nearby south bound and northbound on Kihei Road, so you can get anywhere in Maui on the Maui Bus. The Kihei Bay Surf has a lot of parking but I'm sure 95% of them are reserved for the people who live in the condos of the Kihei Bay Surf. There are restaurants nearby within walking distance but best bet would be to drive or catch the Maui bus if you have the time. Of course, you can do uber and Lyft too, if you feel the need to. The Kihei Bay Surf is a nice place to stay while you are in Maui. Centrally located and definitely worth considering on your next trip out here. I checked out Airbnb for the listing. Just feels like home when you're here. Definitely recommended! 5.0 stars for the overall experience Support local! A+

The house has two separate homes: one is located upstairs with 1 bedroom, bathroom and updated kitchen; downstairs is relatively the same but features a bigger bed and bigger bathroom with a tub. The house is surrounded by windows which allows for a little breeze. Unfortunately, when we were visiting Paia it was extremely humid and even the fans didn't help with air circulation. Pros: The kitchen and bathroom in the upstairs unit was completely updated and the downstairs the bathroom and bedroom had a updated feel. You were able to hear and see the ocean from the top stairs and cook or barbecue on your stay. The grounds were also beautiful. It was also within walking distance from downtown which made it really nice. Cons: The screen doors were very flimsy and hard to close (could be updated) The upstairs bedroom was very small and wasn't the most comfortable for two adults. Although the grounds are beautiful, the grass could of been mowed to cut down on the mesquites due to the heavy rain. They had the sprinklers running but made no sense due to all the rain (it made everything wet). Lastly, they had no can opener which I needed for something (not a huge deal) This is Maui so if you don't like lizards this place might not be something you are into.
