The location is great. The apartment was great too however -- the bed was too high for my mom, an elderly woman so we had to shift her to a sofabed. Unfortunate, given how much we spent. When we called to ask for a step stool I was told sorry can't help you. Unfortunate. The mattress in master bedroom was terrible. The trip was great, hard not to have a good time in Maui. The Whaler is awesome, but the room was not. We had four staying, asked upfront if it slept four and was told absolutely, they checked with housekeeping to be sure we had a pull out couch bed. It didn't, so my son who's 24 and 6'3", had to sleep on the couch for 9 nights. The other option, sleep with his grandmother, not going to happen. This was a real bummer .... Better rating had the person we spoke to been honest and we could have switched rooms. To be clear, this is not the Whaler, they did not book this, it was Maui Resort Rentals. The luana units were PERFECT for our large 3 generation family vacation. The smaller pool and hot tub (as opposed to the larger communal pools) were awesome for the kids to play, as was the green space in front of the unit. we have stayed in ground floor ocean front units several times and loved them but 1) they have become very dated and lacking in upkeep 2) you are always dealing with crowds. 3) it is much harder to keep track of the six grandkids! we have rented from other agencies and MRR is by far the most responsive! I think the Kaanapali Alii in general is a good building, has perfectly maintained grounds, and Alli staff is wonderful. Our experience with the housekeeping, and Maui Rentals, was much less so. DIRTY: Upon arrival we found a property that was grungy around the edges. The throw rug in the bathroom was visably dirty, the carpets and furniture were in need of a good shampoo - they werent just stained and worn, they were dirty. The bedspread smell indicated it had not been laundered for at least the prior two or three guests. I found used BandAids (YIKES) a french fry and a cheeto in the desk drawer. I had to wipe down the dresser drawers, the mirrors had remnants of toothbrush spray, there was green algae on shower steps, fake plants (which I dislike anyway) were literally caked with dust. I don't tolerate that standard in my own home, why would I do so in a "luxury" resort condo for which I was paying close to $1000 per night. I did complain, but they could not have shampooed the carpets and the upholstered furniture without disrupting our stay (nor did they offer to do so). This is all part of maintaining the property, and imo this was a fail. They did come and launder the throw rug & bedspread, and did give us extra sheets to cover the furniture, and gave us foam to sleep on when we were promised two beds (see below). Such were our "luxury" "new" accommodations. NOT NEW/MISREPRESENTED: The unit itself was listed on VRBO as being "completely new" but we found nothing new, in fact, everything looked like the 1990s or 2000s, except the appliances, which were probably installed in the last couple of years, even so, the frig did not make/dispense ice. We were also explicitly told prior to booking that the king bed in our unit could be split into 2 twins. When my two adult children arrived later in the week, we found out that was not the case, (something about only Kings in "guest" bedrooms could be split, not in master bedrooms) that our bed was not splittable. This was frankly infuriating, and sort of ruined the family part of the stay because our son had to sleep on a hunk of foam in the living room - which meant we all had to turn in and rise on his schedule (which differed from our own), not to mention his discomfort and lack of privacy. NOISY: Last but not least, our particular unit (262) was located over the back service entrance and adjacent to the outdoor Westin bar. Over morning coffee on the lanai we were greeted by delivery persons and their trucks backup beeping and driver language, and with our evening cocktails enjoyed the thumping beat of dance music. The lanai was anything but peaceful. This unit should come with a noise warning. It was loud enough at times for my apple watch to register a decibel warning. ACCOMMODATION: Not a dime was offered as any adjustment or accommodation. No apology or concern. Nothing. Not even an apology. Just a gee whiz, "someone" gave you bad info, we'll bring you some sheets and a foam "futon". BOTTOM LINE: The Alii itself is a nice property. We have stayed here before and our room was pristine and peaceful. Take care about the location and condition of the unit you choose to rent. Not all units are created equal. First and foremost: AVOID BOOKING IT THROUGH MAUI RESORT RENTALS unless you know the condition and location of the unit. Even then, I personally would not rent from them given the standards they think are acceptable in a luxury rental. read more

Honua Kai Konea 351 - Relaxing, beautiful, and the ultimate Maui home base We had an amazing stay in Konea 351, and honestly, calling it a "unit" doesn't quite do it justice--it really felt like a luxurious condo-style retreat. The VIEW is what completely steals the show. From the moment you walk out onto the balcony, you're greeted with stunning ocean views framed by palm tree tops--it's exactly the kind of picturesque Maui scene you dream about. Being on the 3rd floor ended up being perfect for us: high enough to feel private, but still low enough to enjoy that lush, tropical perspective. While the balcony does overlook some of the pools and walkways, we still felt plenty comfortable privacy-wise. That said, if you prefer total seclusion, you might consider going a floor or two higher. One of our favorite parts? Sunset time. Watching people gather down at the beach each evening while we could just step out onto our balcony with that same incredible view felt so relaxing and honestly a little luxurious. The layout is spacious with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, which worked really well for our family. One thing to note: not every bedroom has its own en-suite bathroom. Two bedrooms do, while the third uses a full bathroom in the hallway. Not a big deal at all, but helpful to know when planning your group setup. The condo was incredibly well-stocked--we had almost everything we needed. The only small things we found ourselves wishing for were boogie boards and a laundry basket, but those are minor compared to how well-equipped everything else was. The resort itself is fantastic. The pools and hot tubs were definitely active (we were there over Spring Break), but it never felt overcrowded. Duke's, the on-site restaurant, was consistently great and super convenient. And the little market in the lobby was perfect for grabbing souvenirs or a really good coffee to start the day. Overall, we would absolutely stay here again. We have stayed at the Honua Kai 15 or more times. We always love the trip and the amenities there. I would say the unit we stayed in could use some furniture updating with some higher quality inside chairs, outdoor patio furniture, and even new beds. The unit itself is nice, but some quality furniture updates are a must. Additionally, one of the hanging lights over the bar area did not have a bulb in it, and the elevator closest to our room was broken during our entire week long stay. read more

The rental company was great no issues. The Kannapali Alii is also a very nice condominium property I would stay here again but not in the same unit 271 which is why I am deducting a star. Although it had a nice ocean view on the 7th floor its improperly advertised as a 2 bedroom 2 bath. It has a large nice master bedroom but the second room is very small with no closet and no place to put your clothes or suitcases and is right off the family room with no solid doors so its not private at all. We stayed with one other couple who had this room and it wasnt good they had to leave clothes and suitcases in the living room. Everything else about the condo and property are great from beautiful grounds to lovely pools and hot tubs and right on the beach. read more

We called on the a couple of times during our 10 day stay at the wonderful Honua Kai - and Zach, Felicia, and Patricia were all very helpful and a pleasure to work with. They sent people to change a kitchen light bulb that was burning out (so it was periodically blinking on and off), got our thermostat setting readjusted, and let us know in advance that someone would be by the next day to change the AC filter (which Hanua Kai does every 6 months). Location on property is perfect with access to a pool right outside the villa. The layout was perfect for a family or those traveling with a group. We loved the quiet privacy of the villa and pool in backyard but then it was a short walk to main resort with the big pool and Dukes for dinner. We had everything we needed and they were always quick to respond. We loved the walk along the boardwalk to Whalers shops and our fav restaurant Castaway Cafe. We used the gym in Honua Kai everyday and that was a bonus for our family. We didn't use the garage but it was nice they had one! I should gate keep this gem, but I won't! Luana Garden Villas was the perfect home away from home! I can't believe we found this villa last minute AND on fourth of July weekend. The price was reasonable considering it fit my whole family (8). 4 adults 4 children. This place is perfect for families. We had 4 children with us and 1 being an infant. They provided a high chair and pack n play. The unit was PRISTINE, CLEAN, and FULLY STOCKED with everything you could need. The pool was PERFECT! It was very private. No need to fight for pool chairs or deal with over crowding. A lot of hotel pools are so nasty because of all the bodies coming in and out but the pools here were excellent. I wouldn't stay anywhere else on Maui TBH. My daughter said this was the best trip she's ever had and was better than Disneyland LOL very high praises from an 8 year old.
