Stayed in the Tradewinds 2 bedroom Cottage for 3 nights, and wish we had booked our whole week here! Crazy beautiful views, so peaceful and well stocked with everything you could need. Coffee, loads of snacks, all cookware etc., plus umbrella, flashlight, beach towels, and more! Hosts were lovely and helpful, but gave us the privacy we wanted. Very clean, no bugs at all, but maybe don't come to Hawaii if you're afraid of geckos. :) This place is a perfect starting spot for taking the road to Hana or Haleakala. Thank you, Bev and David!

Such horrible business practices. Also they never answered the phone the website does not work, and there is no way to email. Very hard to get a hold of. There is a cell phone in the suite, and Tom and Vicki provide their phone numbers if you have needs. I would highly recommend making sure that your vehicle is up to the challenge - we had to return our first rental car (a Ford of some type) because the transmission couldn't handle the driveway. On the last few days, we had some issues with the satellite, and Tom (one of the proprietors) was nice enough to come down. There was only one thing I had an issue with during our six day stay. At the end, they request that you have all of the dishes cleaned and that you take the trash/ recyclables out. Now, I understand that that makes things easier for them, but I don't expect to be asked to do chores while I'm paying to stay somewhere. Dishes, sure - I would have handled that anyway, because I wasn't raised in a barn. But taking out the trash? Seriously? Not enough to take away a star, but I did find that annoying. Overall, we loved our stay and will probably stay there again when we visit!

We made it to Makawao and took shelter on a shop porch. After a few hours of waiting for the storm to pass, we realized that it wasn't going to happen and started trying to find nearby lodging for the night. After calling several places that were either too far away or closed due to covid, we tried The Banyan Tree and the owner Helaina took pity on us and gave us the last room, even though it was extremely short notice and she was really busy dealing with the deluge of water on the property. She was so nice--met us in the downpour with fluffy dry towels and later offered to make us a pizza because she knew we didn't have a car to go get food. We stayed in one of the cottages with two beds and it was great. The beds were comfortable, there's a full, well-equipped kitchen, and it was just nice and clean and quiet. There's also a beautiful view of the valley from the garden and a huge, awesome-looking pool/cabana/hot tub area (although we obviously didn't get to use it). So highly recommend staying at the Banyan Tree, especially in the event of a severe multi-day rainstorm!

Absolutely awesome accommodations…read more Well first you have a lovely and very private space to call your own. Combine that with a very warm and friendly host (Sharon) and our stay could not have been better. The Rainbow Lookout met all our needs and had everything we needed in the kitchen, plenty of towels for bath and beach, beach chairs, ice chest, and extra scuba equipment. We could walk down the private road to catch the sunrise; we drank our coffee In the hottub and we swam in the very nice lagoon style pool every single day. When we return to Maui we will definitely come back. We loved the home and surrounding areas and enjoyed the natural setting as well. If you don't like nature and want to be pampered by hotel staff then don't come here. If you don't mind seeing a gecko scramble across the rocks, then you'll be ok here. If you want to see what it's like to actually live like a Maui denizen then this is the place for you. Sharon could not have been more responsive and accommodating. The fruit and bread and eggs and wine got us off to a great start! Thanks for everything! We had an absolute blast. Stayed: June 2018

Huelo is located on Maui's rugged north shore, 20 minutes east of the small town of Paia on the…read moreroad to Hana. Since you're 20 minutes' drive from the nearest town, this place is super-secluded, but offers all of the amenities you could imagine. The road down to the place is only partially paved (last time we were there in 2003, anyway,) and so you have a very slow, bumpy ride down. We first did it in some kind of crapmobile rental, and whenever we tried to take the road too quickly, residents along the way come out and give you the stink-eye. Not worth busting your axle anyway, so take it slow. Huelo Point Lookout is just about the last place, down the last driveway on the last road as you make your way off the Hana Highway and down toward the coast. Some of the cottages on the property offer ocean views (the main house, for example,) but for the most part the coast is hidden from view, so if you're looking for beach front, this is not for you. What we loved about Huelo is that it's much more of a rapidly changing environment than getting a cookie-cutter chain hotel place in Wailea, Kaanapali or in Kapalua. It's a more rugged and unexpected experience with lots of wind, quick, fleeting rainstorms and amazing tranquility and seclusion. No kids in the communal pool yelling all day, no one next door making noise. You literally feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. Both times we have stayed there, we opted for the Haleakala Cottage, which is basically a studio apartment (free standing, no immediate neighbors) with a full kitchen, patio, its own Jacuzzi and the best part: a FANtastic outdoor shower. The small office, with 2 sets of washers and dryers plus all the linens you could ever need (including fabulous, huge beach towels) is just around the corner from this cottage, and me being a laundry freak, I was in heaven (guests have free access to the laundry facilities anytime.) Owners Jeff and Sharyn Stone and their sweet son, Kai, have gone out of their way to provide their guests with privacy and seclusion, without being so absent that you don't feel well taken care of. The kitchen is stocked with plenty of fresh, whole-bean coffee, and you can also order special treats like additional flowers or chocolates for your arrival (my husband surprised me with this on our honeymoon.) In all, I think we've spent a total of almost 3 weeks here over our two trips to Hawaii, and I would stay there again in a snap. The only perceived drawback might be the distance from the place to the nearest sign of civilization, but keep in mind that Maui is only so big, so any place, including Hana or even Wailea on the southern west coast is only 40-60 minutes drive away. And when you're in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, on vacation, what do you have more of than leisure time? Recommendations: - Take your watches off when you arrive and put them away someplace. Go with the light and rise when you want, eat when you want, be active when you want and sleep when you want. - Bring some food in from one of the places in Paia to keep around -- fruit, milk, etc. - daily supplies that will keep you going since you're a good 20 minutes from the grocery store, and driving that road at night can be precarious. - I'm going to write a review of this as well, but the Paia Fish Market, right on the main corner of town is unbelievably good. I recommend the fish and chips with lots of vinegar and Tabasco. Ugh. I am drooling thinking about it. - Pack a picnic and head to Hana for the day. Take every opportunity to turn left as you head out and get to the coast for amazing, out-of-the-way waterfalls. Ignore signs for private property if you're particularly adventurous (which we were.)

It also can be hard to find--my taxi driver from airport and Uber driver both drove by it the first time (it is not well-marked). It is in a beautiful area and kind of takes you back in time on Maui which is very nice. When you pull in, you will find a spot on the right--and then to get to the office you will cross back over the front and a big deck to the left. I knew I was going to be late and called so that they would leave a key for me. When you walk in there is a beautiful open area that extends to the place where breakfast is eaten. Unlike traditional inns or B&Bs they do have breakfast, but there is some law that prevents them from serving hot food. Instead, you get some delicious fresh fruit, cereal, and some really tasty danishes. The proprietors are really nice people. There are a few rooms. I think mine was the smallest (the Maui room). It was fine for me traveling alone, however if there are a couple of people I would make sure to confirm you have a bigger room. One difficult point for some is that there is no air conditioning. This part of the island does seem cooler and since it rained a couple nights I was comfortable, but think for some that might be an issue. Finally, as noted in some of the rules be aware of the booking restrictions, if you book through sites you will be given a four day minimum.

My wife and I stayed here in February of 2004 and the following is a letter I wrote to Ms. Deweiss:…read more The purpose of this letter is to inform you why my wife and I decided not stay the second night at your facility, which we had prepaid in full for two nights (see attached receipt). When we arrived on Sunday, February 8th, we soon discovered that to get our luggage to the cottage, we had to use a wheelbarrow up and down hilly terrain and over a small bridge. The distance from our auto to the cottage was approximately 50 yards. This surprise was never disclosed to us in your brochure, website or directions. It's not until you actually enter the facility and find a suggestion list that reads: "you may transport your luggage in the wheelbarrow at the foot of the stairs". Such a barrier would make it impossible for an elderly or disabled person to stay at your cottage. For tired travelers like us visiting Hawaii for the first time, it was quite unpleasant. Upon entering you facility we noticed two things. It was infested with bugs and smelled like mold. The bedroom was especially pungent and had the odor of urine. Although we did not expect air conditioning, we were again surprised that you provided no fans of any kind. In fact, while you do disclose in your brochure that "an alternative energy system provides utilities without electric poles", you don't bother telling us until we get there that we should only use the lights in the room that we are in. In fact your suggestion list reads: "to save energy please turn out lights in one area as you move to the next area". This left us pretty much in the dark, hot, tired, swatting the mosquitoes and fighting the ants. Our next surprise was the bathroom located in a separate facility about 15 feet away. One of the windowpanes in the entrance door was completely broken out allowing bugs, rodents and any other creature from the wild to enter. The "potable water crock" located next to the sink had only a plate as a lid and did not appear to be sanitary to say the least. The faucet in the sink was broken; when you turned it on the whole fixture moved with it. The tiles were broken around it. Finally, the First Aid Kit had animal/rodent droppings in it. When we left on Monday, February 9th at approximately 9:30 am, I informed you that we were leaving and I explained to you one of the reasons why (mold/urine smells). I also told you that your brochure, website and directions were deceptive at best and quite misleading. I requested a refund for the second night, including tax, which you have denied. In fact you resorted to calling me names saying that I was not sophisticated enough for your facility. You also said you "didn't buy the urine/mold thing". Well Ms. DeWeese you don't have to 'buy' it because it comes with the accommodations you provide at the "Tea House Cottage". My wife and I spent two weeks in Hawaii staying at Bed & Breakfast type facilities throughout. On the "Big Island" we stayed at the Volcano Rainforest Retreat just outside of the Volcano National Park and at the Lion's Gate Bed & Breakfast south of Kona. In Maui we finished our vacation at the Plantation Inn in Lahaina. All facilities (except yours) exceeded our expectations and in every case told the truth about what they offered their guests. In fact, you claim no one has ever done this before in all the years you've been in business. However, one only has to look in the guest comment book to read complaints by other guest who have stayed there. Truthfulness is what this all about Ms. DeWeese, honesty that you most certainly lack. You owe it to your potential customers who travel thousands of miles to visit Hawaii and spend a great deal of money to fairly disclose what your lodging is all about. Maybe you don't want people to know until it's too late. I hope other parties reading this letter will take action to ensure future visitors to your beautiful Islands are not disappointed like we were.
