The perfect Hana stay. Arguably the best way to do the road to Hana. No need to drive home exhausted, in the dark, on sketchy roads. Hana Kai maui is right on the water- perfect for watching sunset and sunrise. The rooms are lovely and have the perfect island getaway feel. Pink eye. All 8 of us. We invited our local family friends to come to visit. We hadn't seen them in years. We stayed in the same room and sure enough two days later, all of us had pink eye (conjunctivitis, an infection of our eyes). There was no other logical place we could have possibly caught it, and while there, among the many issues we encountered, the one worth mentioning is that the bath towels just didn't seem clean. Zero follow-up by the staff. We haven't stayed there since. No yelp, we aren't going to upload photos of our bloodshot, irritated, and infected eyes. read more

We booked our stay here from Capital One Travel. Unfortunately, it did not say on the website that there was no AC at this motel. That was issue number one. It was EXTREMELY UNBEARABLY HOT and there are no trade-winds as many reviews will mention. If you use an AC at all in your everyday life, no need to even read further. This is not the spot for you. I went with my pregnant wife and 1 year old and both were sweating all night. If you think the weather will be cooler or not, you have been warned! Keep in mind for the rest of the review that I will be emphasizing that my wife is pregnant because 1. During her pregnancy, she has made simple mistakes that she wouldn't usually 2. I don't think anyone should talk bad about someone who is pregnant and should not be constantly told that they made a mistake- which you will read about below. Issue number two was that my pregnant wife booked this motel and accidentally booked the wrong dates (Sept. 4-6, when we were to stay Sept. 3-5). I called the FDM Front Desk Manager (not sure of name, I believe I heard "Epo" or "bimbo" or something). I told her about the mistake and went ahead and added Sept. 3rd since we were already on our way out there. Once, I got there, I spoke again to the FDM (who acted like she was Susie the owner) and explained our mistake and asked if I could get the 3rd refunded just out of the kindness of her heart since she would still be paid for the 6th since we would be leaving early. She let me know that it was my wife's mistake and that there was nothing she could do because it was booked through Capital One. I explained she could refund the 3rd since I booked through her, but she said it was my pregnant wife's fault and proceeded to tell me that my wife should have done a better job researching the resort about the AC, and getting the dates right. FDM said that if they sold the room and made double on the room, then only would they give a refund. (So she had the option to provide a refund, but wanted to be greedy about it). I explained again that I knew it was our fault, that she was still going to be paid for all the days we stayed, but just wanted to see if the manager Susie would be gracious enough to not charge us for days we didn't stay. After I spoke to Susie on the phone, she said she was bereaving the passing of her husband and would think about it. She said she knows her FDM can be really rude in the way she speaks and she is working on correcting her. (They give a survey when you first come there where one of the questions ask if everything could be solved with the FDM, or you had to talk to someone else - clearly FDM is a major issue). After I got off the phone with Susie, I asked the FDM why she made it seem that she owned the place when I first spoke to her. She said that Susie won't be around for much longer and she'll eventually get the place anyway. Blew. My. Mind. Other horrible things about the spot that other reviews have also mentioned: You can't walk on the beach barefoot since it's all rocks. Can't get in the water. Lots of insects and lizards. No TV. Rooms are dreadfully outdated. Our screen door wouldn't even close. Which was fun to try to keep the lizards out. The walls are super thin, so my 1 year old got to listen to a neighboring couple having playtime. P.S., I recommend looking at the replies from FDM to most of the bad reviews on here. You can tell she is a problem for the business with her lack of customer service and professionalism. read more

Stayed here for a weekend. Prices are okay. Views are awesome. Right by the beach so when you sleep you can hear the ocean. They have a lanai (a balcony) so you can sit and have coffee while you enjoy the view. One of the staff are friendly and let us know about the deep off box to put the key in if we left early in the morning. Parking maybe limited if you arrive late in the evening.. Stayed in room 101 for 5 nights. Hana Kai Maui has no air conditioning, no pool and no daily room service. I had to take out our trash and change out our linens. Room 101 is at the end of the building. The drive to check in was below our room. This hotel has many people who only stay one night. We had cars and lights shining in our room until late in the night. Terrible room if you value your sleep. To top it off, the room above us was under construction for a day. The manager who was extremely nice and professional said she would provide a credit but not sure how much. And truly I would have preferred a quieter room than a credit. Knowing we were going to be here for 5 nights not sure why we weren't moved to another room? Especially since the majority of the rooms are one night rentals. Our mistake is that we booked through hotel.com which switched us to VRBO and VRBO specified a room number. We thought we were renting directly from an owner but that doesn't seem to be the case. My wife, two sons (12 yrs., 10 yrs.), and I enjoyed a peaceful 2 night stay at this condo. Listening to the waves crashing on the surf and enjoying coffee on the lanai next to the kitchen were memorable. We stayed in Room #5 (Kaahumanu), which is next to the ocean. This unit is in the lower building (same as the reception desk) on the right side of the top floor (near the koi pond). The interior of the unit was clean and well-decorated with a kitchen area that had plenty of utensils. In August, it was a bit difficult to sleep soundly on the 2nd night due to high humidity (dew point was oppressive at 72 degrees) and a lack of air conditioning. But the spectacular view and peaceful setting for dining outdoors on the lanai were great. Check-in was from 2pm to 8pm. The reception desk allows guests to do their own laundry for $10 (and will provide laundry detergent). Also, the Hana Kai Maui permits guests to rent out beach towels at no charge, but does not provide beach chairs or umbrellas. Although Hana has 2 general stores (which close by 7pm or 7:30pm) for basic items like eggs and milk, I would strongly recommend picking up bottled water, juices, snacks, toothpaste, or ground coffee in Kahului at the Walmart, Safeway, or Costco there before taking the Road to Hana. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Hana Kai Maui. Since the individual units vary in quality, I would check the reviews before reserving a specific unit. That said, if you cannot live without air conditioning, you may want to skip an overnight stay in Hana. read more

Overall, Hana Kai Maui is the same as before with the same staff. It is very quaint and has the best view of Hana bay. Everything in our unit works. However, because it is located on the first floor of upper building, you do not have the full panaromic view of the bay. The ceiling is low. It is a one bedroom apartment so your bedroom does not get trade wind. The night we stayed here, it was rainy and warm with no wind... so even though we left all patio doors ( bed room and livin room) opened, it was impossible to sleep in 80 degree humidity! Also, the bedroom has lanai opened to the parking lot... so you will hear everything from the street! I still like this place and still recommend it to my peeps but would recommend to book early and try to get either 2nd floor or those units in the lower building. They also have new policy for noise due to so many complaints on social media. So, you probably will not have problem with noise at night but you also will not be able to watch movie on your device without headset... and no music or party after 8 PM! Tips: Book early for and floor unit or the lower building (Ocean front). Stock your fridge. Make sure to put food away. There are many ants here! Bring headset if you are going to watch movie on your devices. You can get fruits and supplies at Hana Ranch store about 5 min into town. There are also some local restaurants and food truck in town but close early. There is a small gas station in town. The unit does supply cooking utensil, cooking oil with some spices, coffee, towels, soap and shampoo, and hair dryer. read more

We reserved condo unit 204 over looking the ocean fir 3/23/2022. It has kitchen, one bed room, a living room with a pull out queen sized bed. We have paid, after tax, six hundred twenty three and thirty cents US dollars. For the amount that we paid, we expected the place to be worth that much a night. However, our dish washer was out of order, the refrigerator was aged, it's doors (freezer and refrigerator were rusty (see pictures) and the toilet tissues dispenser was missing a cross bar to hold the toilet tissues. The bathroom's cleanliness was so so. I really want to ask for the refund because I did not get the quality of service that I had paid high price for (more than six hundred US dollars). The road to Hana is beautiful, you definitely need to come to visit. However if you expect reasonable or cheap hotels on this side of the island, you will be disappointed. read more

I found this place on VRBO (Vacation Rentals by Owner) aka HomeAway phone app. It was on the pricey side at around $300 per night. There's not much available around Hana so it's to be expected. These units are individual condos with studios, one bedroom, and two-bedroom units all with a view of the ocean. We stayed on a second floor studio. The kitchen had all the amenities. It was clean and spacious with high ceilings and a loft. There was ample parking. We really enjoyed watching the sunrise over the water from our bed. It was amazing!! Totally worth staying the night for. We do advise bringing groceries as there isn't much available in Hana and what is available is quite expensive for what you get. We ended up eating at a food truck for dinner and a walk up breakfast place on the bay in the morning. We took a walk along the very rocky black sand beach in the morning. All doors have floor to ceiling sliders for privacy, view, and screens for the breeze. The kitchen was fully stocked and allowed us to prepare a nice meal of Maui beef steaks, local salad greens and wine all from the small store up the street.it was nice to play games with our kids on the lanai, listen to the waves, relax, and reconnect. We knew ahead about the thin walls from reading prior reviews and just used our "ocean waves"iPhone app to drown out the neighbor noise and had no issues sleeping. We stayed at this lovely gem of a place in Hana, after hours spent negotiating the hairpin turns of the Road to Hana. The unit in which we stayed was simply gorgeous: classic furniture with an Asian flair, sliders which opened out onto a spacious, ocean-facing deck, galley kitchen with everything one could need. The management pays attention to some of the finer things in life; they have a shoes off policy and quiet hours politely posted. The only thing that was less than perfect with the reception when we arrived. But that was at 6 PM and maybe the desk clerk was getting tired. read more

Stayed in #106 in December 2016. As one of the more affordable units, it did not disappoint. We had one of the obstructed view balconies, but I still found it to be very nice. Check-in and out process were as easy as can be. Rooms were clean and tidy. The restaurants in town close between 7:30 to 8:00 PM so if you're looking for food, take that into consideration. Otherwise you can just bring your own and take advantage of the kitchenette in your room. I highly recommend walking down to the beach to see the sunrise - well worth the early waking time. It'd be a waste not to as you're practically there already. If everyone parks correctly, there should be enough spots for everyone. read more

I absolutely loved Hana Kai! It is pricey, and our oceanfront condo cost nearly $370 per night. However, it was worth it. We stayed in room #1 which is directly in front of the black sand beach. The place is artfully decorated with framed vintage Hawaii posters. The entire side of the condo was a window giving us full ocean views from each part of the condo. I felt as though we were practically on top of the water. The kitchen had all the amenities needed to cook our breakfasts and dinners, as there were few restaurants nearby, and our condo had the best view anyway. There is a large porch in the front with the same amazing views where we had breakfast each morning. There is a barbecue area just below, and an herb garden where we picked herbs for cooking. I enjoyed the line of scented bath gets, lotions and shampoo in the shower. It is a perfect spot to relax, check out the view, go for beach walks, and it is a short drive to waterfalls and other attractions. I spent Christmas 2014 here at room 106 to split the Road to Hana into 2 days and had one of the most peaceful sleep I had in years, with the sound of the wind and waves crashing into Hana Bay. Tastefully decorated room and clean bedsheets, ocean views from the lanai, and even their own line of refreshing coconut-based soap products. There's a full kitchen (yes, they have a wine bottle opener!) where I was able to make breakfast omelette. The fridge was nice for storing lunch the next day, though somewhat difficult to open due to how it's oriented. There's direct access to Hana Bay for a morning stroll and it's a short drive away from the trailhead to not-to-be-missed Red Sand Beach. Very easy online booking and friendly and helpful staff. Also, there's a key drop-off for early check-out, which helped me have a 7 am start in the Pipiwai trail. I had a fantastic time "unplugging" here! MINOR quips: all windows and doors have to be inspected thoroughly to ensure privacy; the kitchen lacked a chopping board; bed is not very sturdy; the front office is somewhat difficult to find; wifi signal is not very strong and the parking lot spaces could get cramped. Within walking distance of everything you need to see in Hana, including the clothing-optional Kaihalulu Beach. It was a huge waste of money. It was about $360. We stayed in unit 103 and it was quite depressing. Everything looks like it's been stolen from a morgue or a garage sale. The appliances are the cheapest you could possibly find. The paint was dark brown circa 1970. You can very clearly hear everybody on the property including the people above us. It is a old wooden building with no soundproofing. Be aware no air-conditioning and the fan was broken. There was also no hot water. A day later the very nice Handyman showed up to fix the water problem but seeing as we had only 40 minutes left before checkout and everyone was still waking up and in their pajamas it made no sense... The view ofHāna Bay was nice but the septic system in the yard was an eyesore. Kinda felt like faulty towers... Next time I'll save money and camp. read more

There aren't many places to stay in Hana, but I would definitely recommend this one. #107 is a 1BR place that was the perfect retreat after a trek on the Road to Hana. It was very spacious, clean, and above all, homey. The deck provides may only grant partial views of the ocean, but it lets you take in the ocean breeze. Wifi is an added bonus. The staff here is incredibly courteous and knowledgeable about the area. The rates at the time were comparable to a night at a great hotel in Lahaina, but for a bigger space. Key drop off boxes allow you to check out as early as you please. read more

This place came highly recommend by our friends who grew up on Maui so we knew this had to be the real deal and it was! We arrived around noon hoping that we might have our room available, no such luck! No worries, we were prepared and were told to come back in a few hours but in the mean time they pointed us to few local places to grab lunch and relax and gave us a map of nearby places of interest so that was pretty cool. We spent the time grabbing lunch, checking out the general store and heading to Wainapana state park! Perfect way to explore and sightsee! Back to Hana Kai, Overall their entire place is so tranquil! After all, it's literally right on the black beach! I believe there's around 17 different types of rooms to choose from but they can fill up quickly depending upon when you're going and what's going on in Hana. We arrived back well after 3pm and were delighted by our cozy little unit. It was an ocean front studio unit (Kaumaka, #102) which was perfect for hubby and myself. One queen bed with sliding doors to see out into the ocean. Granted, there is another building in front of ours, the roaring sounds of the ocean sure made it feel like we were right "on" the shore! A small little kitchenette complete with an oven, full size refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and all dishes, glasses and utensils along with cooking ware! My only minimal complaint was a rather hard mattress but maybe it's because I'm used to a cushy pillow top mattress. Regardless, it didn't keep me from passing out each night from exhaustion! Bathroom was split into shower/toilet area with a separate area with a sink/closet. Nice and spacious! The folded "swan" towels were a nice touch! Fluffy towels and (full size) shampoos (to use) were also pretty awesome! Sadly, we only had 2 of our 3 nights booked here but I sure wish we had a week or more! Oh well, back to reality! We stayed here for 3 nights and really enjoyed our stay. We stayed in unit 106 and it was clean and even though we didn't have a direct view of the ocean, we were able to see it from our balcony. Above all, we really enjoyed the quiet mornings and the fact that we were able to see the sunrise every day right from our balcony. If you want a hotel with tons of service and staff, don't come here but if you want a quiet weekend getaway, absolutely come here. It was the perfect place for us. Also, a comment about their shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, they use a Hawaiian brand Ola, which felt amazing and not like the usual low-quality hotel shampoo and conditioner. You can see exactly what type of view each room has on the website which is super helpful is picking out the one you want vs what you want to pay. The rates are reasonable given the meticulous upkeep here and the location. Easy walk to get delicious Thai food for dinner. We ordered the "room service" breakfast which consisted of banana bread, fruit and yogurt. Delish! Sure the Travasa down the road is fancier which may be what you want. But people like Hana because of this quiet sleepy little quaint town and I think a place like that may not match the feel. And you get much better views and ocean access here! Hana Kai has a lot of great things going for it. Parking and location are good- just a few miles away from many Hana highlights (red sand beach, hamoa etc.). There are not many places to eat in Hana, so having a kitchen is awesome. Overall, the units are spacious and provide all the basics. This place is pretty expensive for what you get, many of the lights didn't work in our unit. The appliances are fine, but some things like a pan and strainer were broken. Another issue is the noise- you literally can hear everything through the walls so hope for quiet neighbors. read more

This is TRUE PARADISE, like I've never experienced before. Staying here was literally my own personal slice of paradise pie, tucked away in a corner of sleepy Hana village, on the Eastern side of Maui. Sounds liek the beginning of a romance novel, and it might as well be this place is so amazing. Private black sand beach. I hear they do massages on your balcony, for only $55/hr. Falling asleep to the sounds of waves crashing and moonlight. Awakening to birds chirping and the ocean breeze thru the palm leaves. Seriously this place oozed charm, romance, and total relazation. PROs: -studio was $238 (taxes included)/night WALK UP. literally showed up at 10pm begging for a room. -studio was bigger than all our hotels in Oahu and Maui. Full kitchen included, fully stocked with dishware and cooking stuff, even a brita. -Eco soaps and philosophy. -Private beach -BBQ on the common area lanai where you can grill what you buy from the general store (walking distance) When I arrived, i read thru the entire guest book and everyone falls in love with this gem. Full grown men gushing about the moonlight. It's THAT romantic. Definitely glad we split up the road to Hana from the road back from Hana and got to stay here. Spent two nights in the Ocean-front #1 condo. The view was exquisite, the sounds from the waves even better. I had so many things planned to do, but this place 'rocked' me to sleep like a baby. Beautiful on Hana bay! It's a decent option if you don't want to pay the ridiculous prices of Travaasa Hana. Although the prices here are also ridiculous for the quality of the building(s)... but it seems your options are limited in Hana. We stayed in room 205, in the mauka building, for one night. The room itself was actually clean, nicely outfitted, and comfortable. There's a nice high ceiling with two fans to keep the air circulating. We had a good view of the waves crashing onto the black gravel beach portion of Hana Bay... it's not a nice swimming beach, but it is nice to see/hear the waves crashing from your room. My complaint and the reason for 2 stars is that the floors creak and the walls are super thin. You can literally hear everything that's going on in the other rooms, in the building and outside. You can hear your neighbors conversations and you can hear them coming and going. Also, the free wifi doesn't really work.. and you're not going to get reception. So expect to be off the grid while you're here, ie. no Yelping! to find local eats =) For $250/night, I'd unfortunately expect a little better. That being said, I knew of this potential when I booked, as it's mentioned in many of the reviews (on tripadvisor). read more

I've been to Maui about a dozen times, but this last trip decided to spend a few days in Hana rather than just visiting for a day. Best. Decision. Ever. Hana is the epitome of a sleepy little town, and the Hana Kai Resort is a wonderful place to stay! We were in unit 203 which had a modern kitchen and a fantastic view of the black sand beach/ocean. We could hear the waves crashing in all day long... paradise! Our unit had a very comfortable bed & couch, and a great lanai for lounging. The condo was clean and well maintained. The bathroom was small but it was more than doable for a short stay. It's near the main road so you get a bit of road noise, but generally is not an issue unless you're a very light sleeper (then bring earplugs!). Because this is on the rainy side of the island, expect to see a few critters (bugs) that make their way into the unit. They have daily cleaning service so the little buggers are kept to a minimum. Also plan on cooking in the condo if you're staying more than a couple of days - options for eating out are roadside stands or 2 mediocre restaurants (Hana Ranch or Hotel Hana). The farmers market is a supposedly a wonderful spot to get your groceries; though it was closed during our stay (I'm assuming due to weather as it rained for most of the 3 days we were there). The resort is right in the heart of town, so restaurants and beaches are within walking distance. If I stay in Hana again, which is the plan (!), I will definitely consider staying here again. read more

This place is a gem in Hana and actually priced pretty reasonably compared with nearby accomodations. Every suite has an ocean view and a sizable lanai within earshot of the Hana Bay waves. It's accessible to the beach with some small waves, but the rocks are pretty rough. Decent size kitchen with a full frige stocked with a brita and utensils, stemware, and some great Maui coffee. Plenty of closet space, some games and books in each unit, and contrary to some of the reviews, I found our bathroom to be quite modern and nice. Beach towel service from the front desk, and some high-end shampoo/conditioner/soap that's locally made. Service staff was friendly and professional, booking was a breeze, as was checking in and out. Parking is a bit tight and the noise carries given the amphitheater-like design, so please be courteous. Also of note, there is no A/C, but I was never uncomfortable given the ventilation and ocean breeze. Not sure if it's standard, but our unit (103) had an umbrella and styrofoam cooler that both came in handy. There's a small programmable safe for your valuables, and lots of closet space. read more

I want to start off this review by making the suggestion to stay somewhere, anywhere, in Hana overnight so that you don't pack your schedule with trying to hike around all day and drive back west in the dark. I shutter to be on that road at night. If you do stay, there aren't many options; especially if you are only staying 1 night. The Hana Kai is one of the few places that offer 1 night stays (at a premium of course - I think I was charged an additional $15). The building is nice and the location is great. My "ocean view" room, 103 Helani, wasn't really a direct view. I was in the second building up and was blocked from actually seeing the black sand beach. I did see water though. You can only check in and out between 10AM and 8 PM. After that, no one is in the main office. They actually frown upon you using the grill as well if they are not there, though we were not kicked out per se. All of the upholstery in my rooms were clean and it looks like they take a lot of care is making sure everything stays of good quality. I didn't feel icky using any of the plates or appliances as I sometimes do in hotels. The only downside was that there were ants in the kitchen! I didn't want to leave anything out, even if it was in a package. For the price you are paying, you probably want to stay in a 5 star resort, but with the limited options in Hana, you can only get so much. At least it's not the Travasa (or however you spell it) at $500/night. read more
