I did indeed enjoy my stay at Hana Inn (formerly Joe's Rentals) during the 2 nights in January 2023 that I was in East Maui. Great accommodations and clear instructions on procedures and policies that they send and communicate via e-mail. Also a wonderful location in the center of Hana Town. Loved how they had the kitchen set up and there was instant oatmeal and coffee among other things provided. In this post-COVID era, you are assigned exclusive use of a bathroom. Codes are provided in the e-mail a few days prior to your arrival...one is for the downstairs main living room and kitchen, and the other is for your room and assigned bathroom. The rates are reasonable and much cheaper than the resort or even other B&Bs nearby. I guess the only issue was having to deal with any mosquitos, knowing this side of the island tends to be more lush compared to places like Kihei and Lahaina. Luckily, I did have my own mosquito repellant, but maybe for those who are more prone to mosquito bites and may have forgotten to pack some with them, perhaps some bug repellent spray could be provided. Anyways, I hope to stay at Hana Inn again sometime down the road. It sure beats having to deal with the crazy and bad traffic where I live in Honolulu. read more

We stayed here for one night in November while making the loop drive on the Road to Hana. We stayed in room #2 downstairs. We were immediately greeted by the friendly host/owner. The house and property are lovely and well maintained. I especially loved the fresh fruit provided (papaya and lilikoi) in the morning and eating it for breakfast on the beautiful front patio. There's a communal kitchen so you can talk and get to know fellow guests. The affordable price was also much appreciated! read more

We highly recommend staying in this place. We needed to spend 1 night in Hana because we do not want to be too tired to get back to West Maui same day. This place is so close to Food Trucks and the restaurant and the Hana Bay is very short walk. "Da Mean Bean Coffee Truck" opens at 6:30 am close to Ae's Thai food Truck. We love our stay. I'm really torn about this review. The owner and staff are awesome -- they were super friendly and genuinely interested in helping out their guests. Them alone are 5 stars. But I felt a little misled by all the rave reviews and descriptions. I already knew this place was 'budget friendly,' so I wasn't going to expect a 5 star hotel atmosphere. But when the reviews say the bathroom was renovated, they mean that the sink, toliet, and tub were renovated. The bathroom walls are covered in what looks like spotted mold and dead bugs, and the shower rod is completely rusted, which isnt aesthetically appealing while you're trying to shower. They do provide soap though. The windows in our bedroom (avoid the first floor, because you can hear every step and drop of a ball from upstairs) are just slotted glass with again, dead bugs all over the screen. It's a very outdoorsy feel. There's no way of closing the windows, but you get to fall alseep to the sound of waves. The walls are also paper thin, so if you're a light sleeper - bring ear plugs. The most action and drama I got after 5 pm in Hana was hearing a couple fight, cry, and laugh in the room next to us. It was full on drama. Although the bedroom is clean overall, you feel kind of groddy because of the outdated and prehistoric blankets. They provide you with a towel along with a brown hand towel that resembles a rag. I should be grateful for that rag, because my feet got so muddy from a rainy hike. But being presented with a worn down, brown rag didn't feel nice, you know? Maybe I'm just being extra. If you can get over all of that -- you'll enjoy the coffee they make every morning. And being able to store your food in the fridge. Their parking lot was also convenient, and the location was great for our road to Hana trip. read more

With such limited options in Hana, the Hana Inn is a great value for its quality. No frills but the room is fine, clean, and just what you need after a long day of exploring the Road to Hana. This was my third time staying here, but the first since the new owner Gabby took over. He and his wife Poe have upgraded the place and have kept the room rates reasonable. They work, work, work, and it really shows. New beds, rooms and windows are beautiful and comfortable. New kitchen appliances, art everywhere, there's lots left to do but what a gem ! The location couldn't be better if your staying in Hana. Just blocks away from $600/nt hotels, restaurants, markets, and beautiful beaches. Very quiet at night, just the birds and an occasional car passing. You will sleep well. Shared bathrooms with plenty of hot water. The owners are there to answer any questions and fix any problem. We decided to stay here despite a review that said "[the] room had a funk to it that can really only be described as 'warm heaving fart'" because it was the cheapest option in Hana. Because it was so cheap, we were even able to spring for the room with the private bathroom ($10 extra), which was well worth it as I had to pee several times during the middle of the night. Not only did our room smell fine, it was quite pleasant. It was small and clean and had two windows. Despite clearly being clean, there were some bugs (of the flying and crawling variety, including one cockroach that was about an inch long). Not a huge deal though as I was not bitten by anything (and bugs usually love me). Ed, the manager, was super helpful from the beginning. When I called to make the reservation, he made sure that I understood there would be no food options by the time we arrived in Hana. He suggested that we buy groceries close to the airport, but we ended up picking up stuff to go from the Paia Fish Market which was quite tasty. The other guests were also very friendly and chatty. Do keep in mind that the walls are very thin so if you are talking about the people you just met, you should probably keep it down. read more

Let's see, we had choices for our adventure to Hana: spend buckets of money for the typical motel stay, rush everything we wanted to see into a less than fun-filled long day, OR stay at Joe's Rentals for $60 (private bath). For us it was a no brainer: Joe's is clean, nice location, and comes with a kitchen with a few dishes and cups. Rustic, yes, but you meet very interesting people from all over the world! Our advice: Eat dinner at the Hana Ranch Restaurant (great happy hour offerings!) and pack some granola, yogurt, bananas and ground coffee for a great breakfast at Joe's. We have stayed there twice now and will be back. read more

Joe's Rental is an interesting place. For one it was about as cheap as you can get for a night in Hana - $50. If you've ever stayed in a Hostel, then you'll like this place. If you typically stay in hotels this maybe a new experience. The place is very clean but old. You get your own room with either 2 twin beds or a queen sized bed. the sheets are typical motel sheets and you get plenty of room for clothes and bags. What makes this place different is it's more of a house set up, you have your own room with a locking door, you have the option to pay $10 more to have your own bathroom otherwise you share the one in the hall with the other guests. Its a small normal house bathroom with very minimal items. I'd say get the private bath if available. There is no TV's in the rooms. To watch TV, you can head downstairs to the family room with really uncomfortable couches and a small TV with every channel. Or you can head into the dining room for a TV in there. The kitchen has all the pots, pans and dishes you need. You bring your own food and store it in one of the community refridgerators and can cook whenever you want, if the place is full, you will be struggling for kitchen space to make your meal. Overall, the place is very clean, the manager, Ed lives next door and keeps a close eye on the place. The people seem to be of all backgrounds. During my stay, there were about 6 college girls on a trip a long with a hippie couple, some older ladies and a family of four. That being said, if you're not planning on staying in Hana for very long and just need a place to sleep and maybe cook a quick dinner, this place is worth the price. It is also a great way to meet people and talk about things to do while in Maui. read more

Yeah it's cheap, but it would have been cheaper to sleep in my car and I would have come out with a lot less bug bites in the morning. Really great room *for the price*. There is a little paint pealing off the walls in places, rust in the kitchen, but you get that in tropical environments unless you do frequent maintenance. This place was nice. The manager Ed was very accomodating. Me and my boyfriend wanted to get away for the weekend and thought what better place than Hana. Joes was the cheapest thing we could find, so we took our chances. It's right by hana bay, close to town. The common areas of the house were kinds scary..really white walls, no decorations, just cheap livin. The beds were really clean and so was the bathroom. NOTE: the walls are very thin, you can hear everything!!! I'm giving it 3 stars.... $50 bucks a night in maui, is hard to find. Joe's Place is under new ownership, and you can definitely tell where the team has made changes. The restrooms are mostly newly renovated and the rooms are clean. For the price, we would definitely recommend staying. Atop of everything, everyone in the team was very welcoming and more than happy to talk story with you. The owner was rude in the first 5 minutes we were there (hadn't even seen our room yet). And was rude in the last 5 minutes I was there. I happened to be cleaning up after myself when he told me I had to clean up after myself WTF? Rooms are hostel-like, which was what we expected. First of all the house itself does not look remodeled it is older and clearly showing signs of wear as is the furniture in the rooms. And when we arrived there were tarps around the house and there looked to be some kind of construction. The one positive thing I can say is that the rooms were clean. If you simply need a place to stay this is a budget place to stay. However unlike all the people who found the staff to be friendly we had a very negative experience. I will admit that I must have made a mistake and booked the wrong room as we were 3, a 4 month pregnant woman, my mom and aunt, and we booked room8 which was for 2. This was obvious when we got to the room but as it was almost sunset, the only other option in Hana at that point would have been over 600, and we planned on leaving first thing in the morning we figured well it's one night. Then we ran into the people running the place, at first I was relieved I thought maybe they would charge us more but provide a cot or something ( there were no other vacancies at that point). Instead we were informed that the room was clearly for 2 and we could not stay...we were at the end of the road to Hana at this point at dusk. There was nothing to upgrade to. Yes this was my mistake, but there was 0 sympathy, and no refund. Eventually we were begrudgingly offered a tent in the back but as I mentioned the area around the house looked a construction zone so my family refused. So we were left no option but to drive back in the dark and look for a last second hotel back in central Maui. read more

We stayed here one night during our trip to Hana. The room was very basic. It required self check-in and there were no staff on site. Despite being advertised as clean, the room was dusty, the shower had mold, and there were a several flies in our room. During the night, my wife felt something crawling on her arm and to our dismay found a centipede in the bed! I killed it with my slipper. We tried to fall asleep after that traumatic experience. Later in the night, I felt something crawling on my face and discovered it to be another centipede! This one scurried away before I could kill it. We left at 3 in the morning. I am absolutely positive that any good reviews on joe's place were done by friends and family of joe. I've stayed in hostels all over North, Central, and South America. Joe's place is the biggest dump of them all. I would never go back even if it was free. I camped the first time I visited hana and thought this would be an ok alternative as I was now traveling with someone with no camping experience . Wrong! There were about 20 bugs on the walls and ceiling at any given time. We pulled the bed away from the wall. There has been no attempt to keep the bugs out as the screens don't fit on the windows at all. Furniture-crap, kitchen-infested, joe-nuts. Go camping, way better choice! read more

I saw the bad reviews online about Joe's but took a risk because I couldn't afford anywhere else. The place was pretty clean, no bugs, no dust. Everything is old looking and nothing has been done to make it look pretty - HOWEVER - the manager was very nice, I met other friendly people staying there and we ate dinner together in the patio. There is a living room with a TV and wifi from a near by hotel. Joe's place is right by the ocean. I stayed in a double, so it was $50 for me- but if I had had a friend with me, it would have been $25. I would stay here again when visiting Hana. read more

We wanted a place after driving on highway 360 (Road to Hana). Owner on phone is budget minded and polite. +1 for that. The place was cheap. +1 for that. My wife and I got the room with private bath. No soap in the dispenser but you get two small bars. The double bed creaks and the springs are gone. The linens are rough and worn. We did not get a good nights sleep. The place itself is not clean at all. Bug stains on the wall. Room with private bathroom made leaking toilet noises all night. Most of the glass shutters don't work. Shower is too small. Kitchen lacks a working stove and many kitchen utensils to make a decent dinner. We tried to make a oven-ready pizza and even that was a bit of a challenge. The oven was not clean, but did work. Stove did not work. No dish washing soap to clean up. Only the living room had a TV remote that worked. Say hello to the flying cockroach in the carpet and white lizard behind one of the picture frames (no joke). We scurried out of here at dawn saying hello to another couple we saw drinking coffee. I needed a place to stay in Hana at the last minute and was fortunate to get the last available room. I was so grateful! It was very inexpensive ($50) with a partial view of Hana Bay. There was plenty of parking, clean towels and sheets, and access to a kitchen and TV room. I was in a room with a queen sized bed and a shared bathroom, but the shared bathroom was no problem and it was right across the hall and very clean. All in all this is a great place to stay especially for being so cheap. I will stay here whenever I go back to Hana. read more

This place exceeded our expectations, particularly given the poor reviews prior to the new management. Gabby was a wonderful host and responded promptly to our communications and questions that we had. Check in was easy, the place was spick and span with a well equipped kitchen; you could see how much effort had gone into the renovations. Even though there are quite a few rooms the place was quiet which is appreciated after a long day. This home was great value and very comfortable and we wouldn't hesitate to return. We grabbed a quick bite at the Ranch while Ed waited up for us. $50, Room was clean, shower was hot. Great place to get some shut eye before morning adventures in Hana. We didn't see the kitchen, Rec area until we were heading out in the morning and the only other people staying there were in the private room so we had the second floor to ourselves. No bug encounters, but saw some lizards down by the office. Wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. Look forward to it actually. read more

Wow. Where do I start? Ok...the outside SEEMED ok but the inside was horrible! The shared kitchen is all full of rust and the walls and flooring are really dirty. The bed appears to be something he found on the side of the road. Bathrooms old and gross. HUGE spiders here inside. One looked like a brown recluse. We could not staybecause it felt SO dirty!! We kindly told him we wouldn't be staying and that we didn't want our money back but just wanted him to know he had a room available still in case some very desperate person wanted it. Okay, here's the deal: I lived in Hana for over 20 years and when I visit, I stay here. It's clean, it's friendly, it's VERY ECONOMICAL and frankly, it's fun. The proprietors are old friends and sitting on the lanai, talking story with Ed has become a staple event. The reason you see such a variety of opinions has more to do with our individual expectations than anything. Know the facts: it's humble, it's not fancy, it's community- style (share secure, lockable bathrooms, share kitchen and 'hang out' space, it's furnished in early dorm room style (humor). But it's clean, safe, convenient and - most importantly - it FEELS like what Hana really is to us locals. If you're lucky, you'll hit it during a time where the guests stop by to chat and actually get to know each other. Or not. Either way is good. It's especially useful for people who intended to make Hana a day trip, but made a spur of the moment decision to stay over and start back in the morning. Anyway, that's my two cents' worth. read more
