The Bayhouse itself is secondary to the experience but fully equipped for lounging, napping, sleeping, reading, stitching (my wife), relaxing. Do you see a theme here? Located "on the rocks of the bay" so you are up wind from everything. This means no noise at all but the sea. We even prepared a few meals in the perfectly equipped kitchen. Hana is "old Hawaii," what it was like years before noisy tourists came demanding to be entertained with silly luau's and high-rise hotels filled with mini bars. The pace is slow, the natural beauty is stunning, and there are many places to see, but if you really want to get off the grid, this is the place. If not, don't stay in Hana, and try and find your aloha somewhere else. Bayhouse Hana is one many accommodations that you'll discover on Uakea Rd. My wife and I stayed at Tuttu's House, just one house up, for a few nights and were delighted when we entered the property. It's run by husband and wife Bill and Anita, who keep the unit clean and modern. All of the appliances worked, the view from the living room is fabulous, and there's a place to sit outside to enjoy a meal or BBQ. There's an upstairs unit that is under renovation, and occupied by a quiet local tenant. Just a few other tips before I end the review... Getting to and departing Hana. There's always been two roads in and out of Hana, but the less windy road is now better paved. Unfortunately, the mini tour buses that flock to Hana daily, use this road to leave town. The road is very narrow in parts, and the tour buses don't always share it or follow driving rules. They're in a hurry to get a bus load of cranky tourists back to their resorts, giving info over their headsets, and not paying attention to oncoming traffic.The good news is that only happens during the first ten miles out of Hana, or until the road straightens out, but that can be a very stressful hour if you don't plan it right. Leave Hana in this direction early (before 9) or in the late afternoon.

At the same time I want to rave about how wonderful this stay was. A beautiful hidden gem located in Hana. There is an option of staying at the bungalow or at the guest house. We stayed at the bungalow in June for our upcoming 1 year wedding anniversary, the surroundings were breath taking. A time warp into the jungles of Maui. The bunglow is better suited for couples, it has one bed, a jetted tub, and the tub is located on the patio. Although there are no privacy windows surrounding the patio, you will feel very comfortable because of how high up you are in the bungalow and the number of tropical foliage surrounding the bungalow. Picture a 600 sq ft tree house for grown ups. As ironic as this may sound, a five star hotel normally would not have any critters running around, but I give this place a 5 star rating for the taste of serenity that I have not experienced at any other hotel before. Here in beautiful Hana, you get the true experience of sharing with nature. At night the geckos come out from the rafters of the bungalow and you share the home with the geckos. At night you hear them running across the glass. You also learn survival skills of turning off all lights in the bungalow and leaving on the magic moonlight switch on the patio to lure the bugs and geckos to one side of the home to feed the geckos. If you can live with the geckos and bugs, this is as close to heaven you can get. Without glass windows on the patio, it is instead covered by netting that allows the sounds of nature to come through, you can hear the ocean waves from coast of Hana Beach at night. In the morning you can hear the birds chirping. The short bursts of pouring Maui rain can also be heard and is a calming sound. The laundry machine is outdoors. You share with the guest house. The guest house is quite a distance from the bungalow and you do feel like you're alone even if you are on the same lot. The kitchen is stocked with all the cookingware you may need if you want to cook, dishes, utensils, and dining ware. The bungalow even has a coffee maker, toaster, and stove. In the garden patio, there is a barbecue that you can use. You will have to bring a bag of bbq coals with you unless the previous guest left some behind. The room also comes with a small radio with cd player and some Hawaiian CD's. This might sound cheesy now listening to Hawaiian music in Hawaii, but while you are staying there experiencing the rain, nature, and that feeling of bliss inside you, the Hawaiian music you listen to at the bungalow will be the sounds of serenity you will remember when you're back at your cubicle working the following week. There are a few cats that roam around the home, they live there, and if you're lucky enough, you'll get a happy greeting from them. You have to make a private reservation with the owner of this home to stay here. $225 per night plus 11.42% tax, 3 nights minimum reservation. We booked the minimum of 3 nights here to stay in Hana for the beginning of our trip in Maui and the rest of the trip in hotels in Kaanapali resort area, the first 3 nights was the highlight of our Maui trip. The reservation was a very simple process: 1) Email hamoabay@maui.net or call the owner at (808) 248-7884 asking if the dates you want to visit is available. We booked the trip around being able to stay at the bungalow, we were open to June or September. 2) After setting the available date and reserving, you provide a 50% deposit with the balance due 30 days in advance of the arrival date. You can book with your credit card over the phone. 3) You receive a confirmation receipt by email. 4) After final payment you get your secret directions to finding the hidden gem. 5) Upon arrival you call to tell the owner that you've arrived. 6) You try to cope with your much removed state from the busy life you've escaped from. 7) Day 2, you've succeeded in step 6. Now you explore Hana. 8) Day 3 (if you book only 3 days), you're now sad that you know that this is the last night at the bungalow. 9) Day 4, checking out. You're now sad you have to go and you actually say goodbye to the geckos. 10) Day 5, back at work. You think about booking a trip to Maui again to stay at the bungalow, Go for it! "This bungalow sure hit the spot. Tropical, remote, and romantic!"

It looks like there were 2 rentals on her property, but the one we stayed at was just around the block on Hana Hwy. The 3 of us paid a total of $130. What a deal for an entire house compared to other vacation rentals. THE HOUSE: It's definitely older but was clean. We had use of a 2-car garage, full kitchen, dining room, living room, bathroom (shower but no tub) and 2 bedrooms, one with a queen bed, the other with two twins. There's a small balcony which has a great view of Hana Bay. The sole TV in the living room has basic cable. The cabinets were stocked with plates, cups and utensils. They provided us with towels but we all brought our own. The sofas in the living room were definitely old and sunk badly. The beds were adequate. There are just 2 drawbacks. First, the bedroom with the two twin beds had something in the ceiling & walls making a scratching noise. Ratatouille perhaps? Second, the house is located above the owner's son's place. Quiet hours are 9pm to 8am. You have to be out of the house by 10:45am on your day of departure. You simply go back to the office and hang the key outside the door. OVERALL: Very decent digs for the price. It feels great to support a local business as opposed to the fancier vacation rentals. The owner is a sweet elderly lady who even let us park our car at her office which was closer to the Taro Fest. We'd definitely go back.

Going…read morein with realistic expectations, I was pleasantly surprised that it was more comfortable than I thought. I did not mind having no TV as this is a great place to unplug and unwind and the oceanview from our lanai is nature's entertainment. The beach that you can walk to isn't much of a sandy beach but is swimmable although can be rough at times. Aware of what a mosquito magnet I am, I did not want an outdoor shower or hot tub so opted for the Iwa Suite which had a pretty impressive shower. The room was comfortable but as others have mentioned, is dated and you can see wear and tear. Since you are in a tropical environment, you will probably see small ants and even a gecko in your room which we kindly escorted out to the lanai. Thankfully, did not encounter any spiders in the room although they are around property. The fridge, microwave, and plates came in handy to enjoy our included breakfast and fruits we picked up from the fruit stands close by as well as takeout on our lanai. Quiet although you will hear your neighbors, safe enough that you don't need to lock your doors and a wonderful place to unwind but be aware that is it rustic.

There was no TV or luxury amenities, but it was impeccably clean, had an amazing mattress, a small kitchenette to reheat leftovers from the food trucks down the street, and ocean views complete with beach access. We have zero regrets spending a couple nights in Hana because we really enjoyed the off the beaten path vibes of the area. Lots of people just come out for the day, but I would have felt so rushed. Spending a couple nights was the perfect way to experience the area because it allowed us to enjoy the slower pace. Our host, John, was super kind and knowledgeable about how to spend our time with great suggestions. One of which was to get Huli Huli chicken on the beach, which was super delicious with great waterfront views. Another that the botanical gardens were worth the side trip and we totally agree. We also learned he has a deep connection to the community because of the magazine article included in the information book placed in our room. What we loved about Hana was the unpolished and unapologetic authentic vibes. Both nights we fell asleep with the patio window open welcoming cool ocean breezes and rhythmic waves sounds while we slept. Now we're sitting on the beach in Kapalua with the Disneyland-ish resort persona wishing we were back in Hana. We hope to be back sometime soon John. In the meantime, go huskies.

This was hands down my favorite place we stayed on our honeymoon - better than the beachfront condo in Kaanapali, better than the Four Seasons in Lana'i, better than the Hilton Waikiki. It is small and simple and clean - and 50% of the cottage is a huge lanai that looks upon the most beautiful, peaceful, landscape and panoramic ocean views I've ever seen. I think it must be the most peaceful, beautiful place on earth. We loved the yummy local soap and the freshly baked banana bread and garden-picked fruit that were provided for us. The nearby Haleakala Park at Kipahulu and its ridiculous hiking trails took up one day, and another amazing morning was spent at nearby Koki and Hamoa beaches. But best of all is the cottage. Sitting on the lana'i, we forgot about all our problems, and just sat, and sat, enjoying the patterns in the ocean and the lowing of the cows nearby. And if you go - read the guestbook - full of beautiful sentiments and helpful tips for enjoying the area. We can't wait to get back there!! We'll plan our Hawaiian vacations around this place.

Great accommodations and clear instructions on procedures and policies that they send and communicate via e-mail. Also a wonderful location in the center of Hana Town. Loved how they had the kitchen set up and there was instant oatmeal and coffee among other things provided. In this post-COVID era, you are assigned exclusive use of a bathroom. Codes are provided in the e-mail a few days prior to your arrival...one is for the downstairs main living room and kitchen, and the other is for your room and assigned bathroom. The rates are reasonable and much cheaper than the resort or even other B&Bs nearby. I guess the only issue was having to deal with any mosquitos, knowing this side of the island tends to be more lush compared to places like Kihei and Lahaina. Luckily, I did have my own mosquito repellant, but maybe for those who are more prone to mosquito bites and may have forgotten to pack some with them, perhaps some bug repellent spray could be provided. Anyways, I hope to stay at Hana Inn again sometime down the road. It sure beats having to deal with the crazy and bad traffic where I live in Honolulu.

Also note, just maybe 15 feet from the highway, which is not noisy at night, and you're probably out and about during the day. Heard a disturbed person shouting like mad in Hawaiian in the middle of the night which was a little nerve wracking. Sounded like they were right outside the window. Fence door locks but not the door to the room, just something to keep in mind. Definitely memorable. Makes anywhere with a bathroom door seem straight up fancy.

Our room was next to the office and Toms room. The walls are thin. I wish there was ac. It got stuffy even with the fan and windows open. We left the front sliding door open to let in more air. There was fish washing soap but no shampoo and conditioner, so make sure you have your own or like using soft soap because that was in the shower. We were right across from the Venus pools and Tom let us know where to go. Make sure you see it. I'd stay here again. As for the bugs. Hana just has a lot of them so we got but inside and outside.

I think the negative reviews might come from having the wrong expectations. This is a funky cabin in a beautiful tropical forest setting. It is not fancy but it is well maintained and most importantly, clean. I think that if you come with the expectation that you are going to be staying in your friend's uncle's cabin out in the woods you will be happy with what you find and you will enjoy it. The property is located down a quiet road and is about 10 minutes from Hana town. We would stay there again.

Two weeks ago, I was visiting family in Paia. Turns out, they'd never taken the Road to Hana, and…read morewanted to see what all the fuss is about. We planned to spend a day driving and sight-seeing, arrive in Hana for the night, and then get up bright and early to hit Haleakala National Park further on down the road. This is the place the we booked in Hana, and we were seriously glad we did. First of all, just as promised, we got an amazing view of the beach. It's across the street from the Bay, and at 5:30 or 6 A.M., I walked down to snap some pictures. Straight out of my camera, they looked like postcards. Easily one of the best sunrises I've seen in my life. As for the place itself, it feels less like a rental property and more like a home. The kitchen was stocked with some basic non-perishable items (extra-virgin olive oil, salt, pepper, bottled water in the fridge, some A1 sauce, etc.) and enough supplies to make a meal yourself (regular and ceramic knives, foil, cookie sheets, I think a few pots, a baster, and a scrub-brush for the sink). We went into town and got steaks and potatoes. Broiled and baked them in the oven without a problem. There's a good-sized TV in the living room with a good selection of movies (The Mask, Stripes, The Dark Knight Rises, almost surprisingly, The Red Violin...) and a DVD/Blu-Ray player. The couch can fit about three people, and folds into a bed. Obviously not the best bed (more like a cot), but it's an option. The bedroom has a King-sized bed with comfortable sheets and memory foam. In height, it looks literally king-sized. The thing is massive. There's a smaller TV in an armoire in this room, a nightstand, and some outlets. About as expected. I was in love with their bathroom, though. Plenty of space, a linen closet (stocked with towels), a nice sink with a clean mirror, and oh my god, the shower. Big enough to fit about three of me (I'm 6'1), wonderfully even water pressure, and it has its own light that makes everything cream-yellow and dreamy. There's a tiny window with a screen in there, just big enough to let in some early-morning air or a late breeze, but high up and small enough that it doesn't feel creepy. Definitely my favorite feature of the place. There's also a space underneath the stairs going out that has a gate. Inside are some boogie boards and I think one surfboard. Didn't test them out, but it's great that they had them. After racking my brain, the only problems I can find with the place are that they could use some hypoallergenic pillows (they had down ones), and the sink lacked a garbage disposal. Didn't really expect one. Just something I noticed. Overall, for the money and the area, I can't imagine a better deal. We only stayed for a night, but from what we saw, it's an excellent spot. If you're doing the Road to Hana, I'd definitely check it out.
