Genuinely best hostel experience I've had! Everyone is so kind, and the tours are sooo fun. 10/10 recommend to anyone coming to the area.

I grew up on Maui and was really curious to see what this hostel was like, so I decided to stay here to experience it for myself. Overall, the hostel itself was good--clean, decent facilities, and most of the staff were friendly and helpful. It has the potential to be a really great place to stay. Unfortunately, the one guy working at reception was consistently rude and really brought down the atmosphere. He was mean to guests on multiple occasions, speaking in a harsh, dismissive tone and acting annoyed whenever people asked normal questions. I noticed it wasn't just directed at me--he treated several other guests the same way, which made the environment feel uncomfortable and unwelcoming. What also stood out was that he was sometimes inappropriate with his coworkers, making comments and behaving in ways that felt unprofessional and awkward to witness as a guest. Since reception is the main point of contact in a hostel, having someone act this way really affected the overall vibe. Aside from that one receptionist, the rest of the staff were perfectly fine and the hostel itself was a positive experience. I hope management takes feedback about front desk behavior seriously, because addressing that issue would make a huge difference in making this place feel welcoming to everyone. read more

This was my first hostel experience and it was amazing! I will definitely be back. The staff were all so kind and helpful. When I booked the stay, the gal emailed me lots of must do sights to see which was way over and beyond. My private room (Roxy) was so clean and cute! Loved the decor. Bed was surprisingly very comfortable, which is exactly what I needed after hiking all day on the Hāna Road. Air conditioning was available at night or when in the room. The common spaces were welcoming and I enjoyed meeting the other travelers, many who were international. I enjoyed the hot tub and fireplace. Since the hostel is in a residential area, there are quiet hours starting at 10pm. Which is also appreciated if you plan on sleeping early to get an early start on tomorrow's adventures. The kitchen was clean and big enough to accommodate a few people cooking. Since my stay was short I opted to walk into town to the store and restaurants. I will definitely be back! Aloha! read more

Literally the best place with the best people. I'm 37 and brand new to the hostel life AND to solo-traveling, and I feel like I hit the Jackpot with getting to experience Aloha Surf Hostel. I went from being someone scared to travel solo, keeping to myself; to staying at Aloha Surf Hostel 4x in a 2 month period totaling probably over 20 nights and I still can't get enough. The place is so homey. So pretty, clean, well kept.. easy to socialize and make friends with everyone who enters the place. The location is great. The vibe is great. There's a living room with a couch you can melt into, board games, a pool table, hot tub, firepit, game nights, free tours, a huge kitchen, a grill.. honestly one of the best experiences I've ever had, and I can't wait to go back. This hostel has two game-changing features that make it one of the best hostels I've ever stayed in: - Location: it's in the funky town of Paia which is filled to the brim with eateries for every price level. It's also a short walk to the beach. - The tours: I didn't go on any of these, but if I had known they existed, I may have planned my entire trip to Maui around them! The hostel does daily tours where they will drive you throughout the island. They are FREE. Many of these tours were to places I was already going to, after much planning. Had I known about these, I may have just booked with this hostel and hitched to their tour wagon! Everything else about the amenities here is above-average for a hostel. The one, HUGE, negative is that the showers were cold when I was there. That's the only reason I'm withholding 5-stars. read more

The best decision I made this whole trip, was staying here. So clean, free beach towels, hot tub, singular bathrooms, the absolute best location & the people there working & staying were incredible. The Main Street of Paia is walkable and filled with restaurants, shops, coffee. You can also walk to the beach. Baldwin Beach and Safeway are 10 min away. I will for sure always come back here. They are also extremely COVID safe with mask enforcement. 10/10 recommend. read more

4.5 because they have free Pilates and Yoga classes on the beach (Izabella was an awesome instructor). This place has a lot of perks including free pancake breakfasts with tea/coffee, free trips throughout Maui (whale watching, snorkeling with the sea turtles, road to Hana, Iao hiking, etc...). They also have tip-based messages. I stayed in a 6 person room, which was super hot, for which a loud fan was turned on. Also my mattress was super soft... I sank in the center. That said, I really feel the good outweighs the bad at Aloha. Staff are super nice. Only $1.50 per wash & dryer. These along with the shower stalls get pretty busy after the people from the day trip return to the hostel. Free WiFi, quiet time from 10p to 8a. read more

A very nice place to stay if you're looking to save money on somewhere that you're going to lay your head and change clothes. I never knew about the hostel concept until one of my old coworkers told me that he stayed in one in LA and it was really cheap, so I looked into it. This place is super nice. I was a little skeptical at first because I've never stayed in a hostel before but after my experience here I wouldn't mind staying at one again. The place is clean, nice sized rooms/beds and very homey feeling. I came with my parents and we stayed in a 3 bed private room and it came with its own bathroom. It is clean like I said, but it is Hawaii, and it's located in a more rural area, so there's more critters that you see, geckos to be exact. They have nice amenities, free breakfast, free tours, and they have a lot of info about the island as far as things to do and the bus schedules if you want to get around your own way. Although I came with my parents I would say this suits more of a younger crowd because they mainly have dorms that have 2-3 bunk beds in each room. Everyone that stays here are really friendly and aren't afraid to say good morning or hi when you pass by. They have a living room with cable TV, a computer, WiFi, hot tub, pool table and vending machine. The only couple of reasons it doesn't get 5 stars is because the lack of availability on the tours, it's a first come first serve basis where you sign up for the tours, but they only have one van and it seats about 12 people, and there's at least 20 who stay in the hostel. Also, when we came to check in at the time they said we could, the room wasn't ready for another 2 1/2 hours! That was really frustrating, especially after not having any sleep for almost 24 hours. Overall, I wouldn't mind staying here again because the pros outweigh the cons, it's in a cute city and really close to town. read more

Probably the best place to stay on Maui. Best in value and cleanliness and "flow." Great walking proximity to a wonderful beach and town and the Mana Market (great healthy food). Really well run. Owner, Isaac, and staff, Ben, Erica, Mya, and Kate were all laid back, helpful, efficient, and fun. Excellent value tours (FREE with suggested tip) with an excellent guide. Great fellow guests who are open and easy to room with. Place was very clean, so disregard one of the reviews saying differently. If I had one word to describe the place it would be "embracing." Dirty room, kitchen, and bathroom. Very loud into the later hours of the night, so do not expect a good nights sleep. Beds are uncomfortable. I felt all the reviews I read were very misleading. I have never stayed at a hostel nor did I think I would ever do so. However, after booking a very last minute flight to Maui, I needed a place to stay once a landed on the island. I quickly did a Google search while waiting for my Uber and came across Aloha Surf Hostel...and I am glad I did so. I was reluctant to sharing rooms but the experience was awesome. As soon as I checked in, I met a fellow traveler and we got dinner. The rooms, bathrooms, amenities and common areas were all clean. The hostel offers free tours (although tipping is highly recommended) to locations throughout the island. The staff was incredible!!!! Definitely will come back next time in town. read more

My first experience staying at a hostel and it couldn't have gone any better! From the moment I stepped inside, I felt the good vibes. I was welcomed with a warm smile and got a tour of the whole place. The outdoor area is lit beautifully and even has a hot tub! Wow. Everything is so clean and kept tidy at all times. They even have daily tours around the island and free breakfast pancakes on top of it all. The workers that stood out to me with over the top service would be: Matt, Ronja, Nikki, and Mallory. The Aloha Surf Hotel is truly and honestly a great place to stay. This was my very first stay at a hostel. It's a really cool vibe. It was truly an awesome experience. There is no catch to the tours that are included, it is suggested to give the volunteer driver \tour guides a nice tip. It's totally worth way more. They are definitely worth a great tip they are pretty genuinely awesome!!! It's very clean, my room was air conditioned. Every thing is awesome!!! You will not be disappointed. The tours are awesome, they stop by the grocery store so you can buy food and rental snorkel gear. You don't need a car except to and from the airport. It includes breakfast, free daily tours, laundry detergents and it cost a $1.50 to wash. Bring your own towel and soap. Enjoy and Aloha. read more

Located in a really cute beach town (Paia) and only a 10 minute walk from a grocery store, a bunch of restaurants, and a few beaches. Everyone who works there is incredibly nice and accommodating, it's a lot cleaner than other hostels I've stayed at, and the free tours were great. However, don't plan on being able to go to every tour--the bus only seats 11 and they put the signup sheet for the following tour while the current tour is happening. The system is pretty fair though and makes it possible for different people to attend. On some days, depending on who stayed there and who rented a car, other people had extra seats for the tours too. Definitely sign up for the road to Hana tour! The one trip they don't offer (to Haleakala) ends up being pretty popular with the people staying at the hostel and while I was there, there were at least 2-3 trips that people within the hostel organized independently. Be sure to have some cash with you on hand for the $10 key deposit and the $3 towel rentals. They've got a bunch of body wash and shampoo and stuff in a basket for open use in the shared bathroom if you forgot anything and there are also a few private bathrooms available to everyone too. There's a huge fridge and tons of pots and pans which makes cooking really easy. tldr; Great if you want to be near the beach, in a laid back town and a clean hostel, and if you don't want to rent a car. read more

Not a bad hostel and certainly not a bad price for Maui. Our stay was during a busy season, so the bathrooms were frequently occupied and always damp. It's a pretty bare-bones hostel, even for the private room where we stayed. We noticed a hole in the ceiling where a few bugs scurried out, which was pretty gross but not uncommon for shared spaces. However, the patio space is beautiful and the free tours were a great add on. Check their website for the specific tours because they vary day to day. We only spoke to one staff member, but she was lovely and very helpful. The hostel is a short walk from downtown Paia and a cute little beach area, so the location couldn't be beat. But honestly, we wouldn't stay again because of the bugs and overused shower facilities; a little bit more attention to these areas would be helpful when many rooms are booked. However, take this review with a grain of salt. I may have been able to overlook those characteristics if I was traveling with a big group of friends. read more

Paia is a pretty rad little town, and the people we met were all super cool. The Aloha Surf Hostile was a total bummer. Locked us out of our private room twice; gave us wrong key, failed to give us entrance code; and were rude to us when we had to ask for towels. For over $100 a night, I will definitely spring for a room next time at the Paia Inn. Thought it would be fun to stay at a hostel and meet some peeps, but these folks were super rude with no aloha. read more

It's clean , the people are so incredibly nice ( I mean , they are in Hawaii so why not?), there are free tours, there's a whale tour at a low cost, there's a hot tub, and the location is amazing ! I was a little hesitant when my friends decided to stay in a hostel for I never stayed in this type of accommodation before. I was expecting something less of a hotel but more of a military camp. But I was wrong. Let me start by complementing this place from its facade. The fence is lined up with colorful surfboards so it's a little hard to miss this place. There are two sections, lower and upper level. In the lower section of this hostel, you will find tables and chairs, pool table, hot tub, gazebo, laundry machine, vending machines, private rooms, and shared rooms available for guests. Please note that both levels are secured with pin-locked doors.The upper level section has the common kitchen with two 4-gas stove oven, huge industrial refrigerator and all the kitchenware needed for making your own meals. Coffee is made every morning and tea is always available. There is a counter table where you can sit in and a living room with television available. The shared rooms have 4 bunk beds. The common bathrooms are clean! Besides having an accommodating staff, the guests are very respectful in keeping the noise down and they all seem friendly. There is a free tour available for guest to sign up. Although I did not sign up for any tour, i surely recommend the road to Hana tour. Make sure you buy the famous banana bread, and also do not forget to eat bbq. I definitely recommend this place for everyone and anyone who is looking for a place to stay here in Maui. One of the best hostels that I've stayed at. Well-equipped communal kitchen space, clean showers and great community. Super close to the town area of Paia, which is hip, laid-back and has tons of great food and shopping options. A small beach park is within walking distance, and there are options to rent surfboards close by. Icing on the cake are the free tours they offer every day. Hands down one of the best hostels I've been to! The staff was so friendly and helpful. I stayed here last March. They were pretty booked up so they upgraded my partner and I into a private room when there were no bunks in the same room. I would definitely stay here again. It was VERY clean, and even the other guests were friendly. The crowd is on the younger side compared to Lahaina's Last Resort(DISGUSTING) and the North Shore hostel (old but clean). read more

This hostel was honestly so great and changed our entire trip by making it way better! The owners were so open and everyone who worked their treated us like family. I couldn't speak more highly about how grateful I am to have stayed at this hostel.They do sweet tours across Maui every day which really helps you explore the island. On days you are not doing the trips if you choose not too the town Paia is really cool with a lot of yummy organic foods. There are also beaches not to far from the hostel. Great location just a 10 minute walk from town. Daily tours you can join for the price of just tipping the guide. The rooms were clean and more renovations are being made such as an additional shower. As of today there is a co ed communal bathroom with three showers and two bathrooms where you can lock the door. It gets tricky sometimes waiting for the bathroom and shower so plan accordingly. The rooms could use thicker shades- the street lights and sun light kept us awake sometimes and because it's hot in the rooms we had to keep the curtain back and door open which than gave us no privacy. The rooms do have a fan though and the place is cared. The staff is nice and I think it's one of the nicer hostels you may stay in. In expensive Maui this is a deal. read more

Great place to stay on a budget! My friend and I spent a weekend here. We wanted to find a cheap place to stay but weren't really interested in sharing rooms with people so we booked a private room. The private room turned out to be its own little separate space with its own bathroom, fridge and private patio. It was awesome! We had just as much privacy as we would've had staying at a hotel. The have a big shared kitchen space for cooking which was nice and a hot tub which was awesome at the end of the night. They also offer free tours..we didn't do any but it seemed pretty cool. Free daily tours, which are the best way to see the island, they take you to all the main spots. An awesome, amazing, magical stay that makes you feel the aloha right away. Travelling alone, I've been the second time to this clean hostel with a very warm and cosy atmosphere, and the super friendly, supportive and hearty staff was clearly one of the reasons for me to come back. They are very much interested in making you feel comfortable as well as helping you make the most of your stay and feel the magic of this island, just talk to them and you might get some insider, non-touristy tip for an excursion or day trip. More than recommendable are the free guided tours all over Maui the hostel offers. They are entertaining and enchanting and a good chance to get to know the other guests, the guides, some locals and the island better. It's a priceless benefit to have a resident who loves the place (and they really do!) with you to show you around all the mind-blowing places, and the spirit of the groups is super positive bringing all the people closer together (even if you "expand the age bracket": I'm 37 and most of the guests are in their twenties - but that didn't matter in any way, the time was a blast! ). Surely contributing to this is also the get-together in the patio in the evenings. Absolutely easy-going, very relaxed and always big fun, this is one of the best ways to end a day on Maui, to share your experiences and maybe inspire others to follow your ideas. In my 11 days, there hasn't been one when I went to bed without a smile on my face. All that's left for me to say is mahalo for an unforgettable time, these lifetime memories beyond words (and I know I used quite a few to at least try to describe the undescribable) and the feeling you take with you, aloha to you all and hana hou - looking forward to seeing you next time! :-* read more
