Second Time to come here! As we walked for a bubble tea on 81 ave, we passed by this little cafe with a patio. We decided to go the week after. When we finally tried some of the foods during tea time (a time between after lunch and before dinner) which they have a special combo with Hong-Kong style tea and coffee as well as other Asian drinks. At our first visit, I had a BBQ duck noodle soup with milk tea as a combo. I reminisced about having a clear meat noodle soup in Asia. I should've requested to change the noodles to egg noodles which are more my fave. My bf had a spicy wonton noodle soup with coffee as a combo. On the second visit, we came during lunch. We ordered a toast with Vina milk, milk tea, Fook Kin fried rice (typical Hong-Kong fried rice) a rice combo of 4 items (BBQ Pork, Duck, Chicken and a half of Salted Egg) and milk coffee. The price is pretty descent considering the portions are pretty big.

Delicious food, pricing a bit more than Chinatown but good quality food and portion size is decent. Authentic for sure

I ordered the Curry Beef Brisket Noodle again during my second visit because the dish left a great impression on me during my first visit. The Curry Beef Brisket Noodle is a must-try and I definitely recommend this if you are visiting this restaurant. During my first visit, I did not have the chance to try their satay skewer and I decided to order a chicken satay skewer to try. The chicken satay was good. The meat was tender and nice, and not too burnt or tough unlike some of the satay that i tried. It came with a satay dipping sauce, but the sauce was not as good as I thought. Perhaps it did not contain peanuts due to possible allergy concerns so the sauce was not as fragrant as I expected satay sauce to be. But still it was good, and the skewer wasn't too expensive as well. Great restaurant and definitely one of the hidden gems in Edmonton.

One of the big let-downs appertains to the poor condition of the dining area and awkward design choices. However, they make up for it in their incredibly friendly service. Tasty Choice is super tasty! This was my first time visiting and I felt that the interior design of the store is really awkward but casual. One of the things I would criticize them for is the tattered furniture and I feel like there is too much cluttered knick-knacks laying around. The decoration is not cohesive at all. I feel like the whole dining area could use a renovation or more love. The use of duct-tape looks super unappealing but I will not judge harshly as these may be only temporary. I really hope they design this place better in the future. Nonetheless, I understand that this is a local business and times may not always be the best in terms of financials. I found the service to be super friendly! I really appreciated the welcoming attitude and genuine smiles I received. It's appreciated! The select foods I personally ordered, apart from my friends, were good. Takoyaki: I found this appetizer to be very tasty -- as the name of the store implies -- and delicious. I really liked the presentation, it looked incredibly yummy. It was simple but I would definitely order this again. Mango Real Fruit Juice with Milk: I found this beverage to be very good. I really liked the mango flavour that they used, I'm quite sure they used real mango juice not from powder (which is expected from the name of the beverage). I really think it made a major difference and it was quite satisfying to drink.

The Hainan Chicken Rice was super comforting. The chicken was soft and juicy, not dry at all, and the rice had so much flavor on its own you could eat it plain. Once you add the sauces, it's game over. Simple dish, but when it's done right like this, it really hits. The congee was exactly what you want from congee. Warm, smooth, and easy to eat, but still flavorful. It's the ultimate comfort food, especially if you're tired or just want something cozy. They were generous with the ingredients too, not just a bowl of plain porridge. I love that they have that Hong Kong style café vibe on the menu. It's that mix of Asian and Western comfort food that just feels nostalgic and homey. Everything tastes like real food made in a real kitchen, not something rushed out. The rice bowls are huge. You actually feel full after, which is rare these days. Good amount of protein, fresh toppings, and everything tastes balanced, not overly salty or oily. The fried chicken was crispy outside, juicy inside, and well seasoned. Not greasy, not dry, just really solid fried chicken that you actually want to keep eating. And the Singapore noodles were packed with flavor. Nice texture, lots of ingredients, and that classic curry seasoning that makes you keep going back for "one more bite" until it's gone. Everything came hot and packed well, portions are generous, and the food just tastes comforting and real. This is the type of place you start craving randomly during the week. Easy 5 stars. Definitely ordering again.

In my (heavily biased) opinion Old Strathcona and Whyte Ave is the best part of the entire city. It…read moreprobably helps that I live nearby and have frequented this part of town practically every day of the combined fifteen years that I have called Edmonton home. The vibrant history of the area is one of Whyte Ave's defining features, each part of the streetscape telling its own story. One such example is the Hulbert block; a three-storey, brick clad, Edwardian commercial building that was built in 1912. On the street level of this building Edmontonians have been enjoying cozy cafe visits at Block 1912 (the cafe's name a tribute to the year that the building was built) since 1992. This cafe is one of the most notable spots on the avenue and their 33 year tenure makes them an iconic and reliable mainstay. Named Favourite Coffee Shop 2023 in the Edmonton Journal, it goes to show that even after this many years people seek out the familiar and comfortable spaces in the city. After all, Block 1912 really does feel a lot like going home. I have spent plenty of time at Block 1912 over the years and I have always been impressed by the immense amount of space that this cafe occupies. Full of time-weathered quirks, there is never any shortage of things to see and discover in this original-exposed-brick hideaway. Deep within the cafe the lighting dims as there are only windows at the very front of the space making natural light sparse. There are different levels of seating and mis-matched chairs. An entire nook is lined with shelves of books. I happen to know that there are secret drawers in various pieces of furniture that are filled with hundreds of notes, left by past patrons. Artists and musicians are encouraged to pitch their portfolios to the manager in order to be featured in the space - whether it be on the walls or to perform during one of the regular live music evenings. Visiting on a Saturday afternoon, I hadn't been to Block 1912 in a while and was interested in exploring everything that their menu has to offer these days. And there's a lot! The counter for ordering is about halfway into the cafe and the glass case full of pastries is an immediate distraction. Did you know that they also make their own gelato?? Of course all sorts of coffee beverages are available but Block 1912 also serves alcohol. There's a full menu of sandwiches, small plates, and comfort food. The staff is friendly and happy to answer any questions. I wanted to order a coffee to stick with the cafe vibe... But I'm not a straight black coffee kind of girl. The Ganache Mocha ($8.75) caught my eye but then I saw the list of 46 (!!) flavoured syrups that there are to choose from! It's almost impossible to decide on only one and after much difficulty I selected Toasted Marshmallow as an add-on to my mocha. Seemed like flavours that would make a lot of sense together! (If you ever want to find out what a "pineberry" latte tastes like go to Block 1912 and let me know what happens.) I settled into a table right at the front of the restaurant so that I could enjoy the small amount of natural light that reaches the interior. Receiving my coffee, I have to say that they got the memo! I was impressed at how much my toasted marshmallow ganache mocha looked exactly the part - there were even mini marshmallows on top! Was it incredibly sweet? Yes. Was there even coffee in this? Who knows! But this warm beverage was what I had been hoping for. Chocolatey with a definite toasted marshmallow flavour, I was delighted that this drink felt like a specialty cafe creation. In the interest of having an entire lunch, I wanted to order something off of the sandwich menu. The Hot Italian Grill seems like the sandwich to get. But the Turkey Apple Brie Sandwich ($16.00) felt seasonally appropriate and I picked that one. A soup or salad is also included, turning this dish into a meal. There were two daily soups available and the Vegetable Beetroot Soup also seemed to match the falltime vibe. I liked that the bread was a lot more interesting than a plain white or brown type. Instead, this bread was studded with what appeared to be cranberries - an ideal match for a turkey sandwich! The brie cheese was gooey and melty. I barely noticed the apples. It was a decently good sandwich but there wasn't a whole lot of filling and I could have easily made something like this at home. I liked the flavour combination though. The soup was warm and flavourful with a fairly fine dice of veggies within. I was expecting a more prominent beet component (maybe not a full borscht but somewhat closer to that) and I'm not sure if I noted the beets at all. If there was any, they were chopped very small and completely mixed in with the other vegetables. I also had to try the Herb Crusted Chicken Pot Pie ($18.00) from the Comfort Food part of the menu. Who doesn't love a soul-warming comfort food on a chilly day? It was even raining! Also served with soup or salad, we decided to try a salad
