My wife and I recently bought our house and one of the first things we discovered was that some interesting DIY wiring had taken place over the years. An upstairs hall closet had been converted into a small laundry room and the circuit bringing power to the closest bedroom was tapped into. This left the bedroom switch and the receptacle controlled by that switch no longer working. I opened the cover to the junction box located in the laundry room to find a rat's nest of wires that I deemed to be above my paygrade.
Then there was the dishwasher, which worked fine until we replaced the old outside flood lights with security cameras. The dishwasher control panel lights began flickering like crazy when we would start a cycle and when the cycle was finished, the dishwasher would not work again until we reset the breaker. Although the breaker panel had the dishwasher labeled on 2 different breakers, it was not actually on either of those circuits and had been tied into the same circuit that powers the outside lights along with who knows what else, causing the circuit to be overloaded.
And the final straw was when I tried using my circular saw in the garage but the saw could not pull enough power to complete simple cuts and my wife poked her head into the garage to tell me that the AppleTV was restarting every time I used the saw.
We saw a commercial for one of the big electrical companies (the one that rhymes with "hello") and decided to give them a call. They charged $100 just to come out and take a look. In addition to the issues that I had pointed out, the service tech strongly recommended replacing our electrical panel box, which actually seemed like a good idea. Then the estimate came....WOW. The cost was significantly greater than what we had in mind. And it seemed that the service tech had quietly upsold the entire job by adding more to each component than what we simply wanted done. But wait... if we bought a service contract then we could get a discount!
Time to do our due diligence and get a few more quotes. We called a couple different electricians and Josh was not just the first to respond, but the only one to respond. We scheduled an appointment for a FREE estimate and he showed up right on time. He was very polite and just had an overall warm personality. I walked him through all of the same issues as I had done with the "other guys", and mentioned that we were possibly interested in replacing our panel box as well. As we finished the walkthrough, Josh immediately stood out from the "other guys" by asking a simple question - which issues were a priority and which were wishlist. No upselling, no quietly increasing the scope of work, and no service contracts to receive a "fair" price. We asked if each item could be priced out separately on the estimate and if we could then pick and choose what we would have done. Josh was more than happy to do this and sent over the estimate shortly thereafter....WOW. Josh's prices came in at a fraction of the cost of the "other guys" - I guess somebody has to pay for all of the marketing and commercials.
We hired Josh to take care of everything on our list which took two days to complete. He replaced our electrical panel box and installed all new breakers, ran dedicated 20 amp circuits for both the dishwasher and the garage, which included installing 5 receptacles throughout the garage, and sorted out the rat's nest in the laundry room, bringing power back to the switch and outlet in the bedroom. While he was here he was extremely respectful to us and our home, made efforts to keep everything clean, welcomed conversation, and was even willing to share some of his expertise and teach me a thing or two about basic electrical wiring that any homeowner should know!
I highly recommend Josh, as he is an outstanding electrician. But even more importantly, he is a genuinely good guy. read more
