Previous Experience: We hired DL Design Construction last…read moreyear to completely renovate the exterior of our home with James Hardie siding, including windows, light fixtures, and all new electrical with an all new panel. Dimitry and his team exceeded our expectations so much so that we rehired them to build us not one, but two storage sheds. But did they really build us the storage sheds we wanted? Why Rehire? We had one previous storage shed. You know the one that everyone has. The so called Tuff Shed, in reality wasn't so tuff. It was falling apart. It was seated on cinder blocks that weren't stable or sturdy. There were gaps in between the doors and we wanted something more secure and airtight from dust and critters. Especially the smell. You know what i'm talking about if you've had one. We also wanted something more purposeful, and something that would have longevity. So we shopped around looking at Tuff Sheds from Home Depot & Lowes, but quickly realized that they were similar to what we all ready had just with a bit more bandages. We knew within a very short period of time these sheds were going to fail miserably from their design and cheap building material. So we picked up the phone and called Dimitry at DL Design who we TRUST. The Build: After discussing our requests with Dimitry his team went to work. Heres a brief breakdown of the work they did: They tore down the old shed, poured two concrete pads including a walkway leading up to the shed (that we just love). They anchored the shed down to the strong concrete pad, which practically made it tornado proof. They built the frame with precision and excellent craftsmanship. Insulated it so i can store more temperature regulated items. They sheathed the frame with plywood on the exterior as well as the interior. Then wrapped it with a water barrier paper. They installed several windows to help control temperature and bring in natural lighting. They installed a sturdy door with lock and key, which helped secure it, as well as prevent dust and insects from entering in. Unlike the prefab ones that have gaps and fall apart due to water intrusion and warping from sunlight. They finished the inside & outside with the best siding material out on the market, the James Hardie fiber cement siding. They also painted it from inside and outside with high quality paint. And not to fail to mention they installed electrical with an interior ceiling light and 3 outlets. You thought I was done, but i'm not. They also installed 3 custom gutters to help direct water away from the structures. The Upside: With these two new "sheds" we can utilize this space for so many purposes such as a new office space or even a gym. We can store things in there that we could never store in any new prefab shed out there. Such as food as an extra pantry, clothing such a transferring winter wardrobe from summer wardrobe. Storing blankets, towels, bed sheets, and not worry about things smelling like it came out of a shed. We no longer need to worry about bugs or critters getting to our valuables or moving in underneath the crawlspace making a din, since the "shed" is sealed airtight from all around. My experience with California Energy Consultant Service started when I scheduled an insulation…read moreestimate and met with Mitch. From the beginning, he was knowledgeable, informative, and took the time to explain the scope of the project and the costs involved. We were getting quotes from several other companies, so California Energy was not automatically going to get the job. What really stood out happened later that evening when Phil, the owner, personally reached out to ask about my experience and make sure my questions had been answered, whether we decided to move forward with his company or not. Coming from an HVAC sales background myself, that immediately impressed me. I have always appreciated working with family-owned businesses, and having the owner personally follow up showed a level of involvement and accountability you do not always see. Phil and I ended up talking for a while, and I mentioned that I was also collecting bids for a complete roof replacement. I had already met with six roofing companies, but after my experience with Mitch and Phil, I figured, why not get one more estimate? Ultimately, we hired California Energy for both the insulation project and the roof replacement. This turned into a very extensive project because we had multiple other projects and contractors working at our home at the same time. California Energy has been extremely accommodating and willing to work around scheduling changes, other trades, and unexpected issues along the way. Jamie has been the project manager throughout this entire process, and I really have to give him credit for keeping everything moving. He has essentially been shuffling all the pieces around while coordinating with the other work happening at our property, making sure California Energy's portion stayed on track and that my concerns and needs were addressed. With this many moving parts, that has not been easy, and I genuinely appreciate the effort he has put into coordinating everything. Even in the limited time I have worked with him, he has been responsive, helpful, and willing to jump in where needed. John and Oscar handled the roofing work and have been excellent to work with. They have been professional, responsive, and willing to address details as they came up. The roof is now complete, and the old attic insulation has been removed. We are currently waiting for some electrical work to be finished before the new insulation is blown back in. I also have to give a special shout-out to Jose. While working at our home, he identified a pre-existing issue with our HVAC system that could have turned into a very expensive repair down the road. He did not simply point it out and move on. He advocated for us, communicated with our existing HVAC contractor, and helped everyone work together to determine what was actually happening. That process ultimately revealed that the two-year-old HVAC unit installed on our roof was defective. Because Jose was thorough enough to recognize that something was wrong and persistent enough to help get it properly investigated, our HVAC company is now replacing the defective unit. That could have been a completely different situation had he not caught it. Thank you, Jose. With a project this large and this many moving parts, I do not expect everything to go perfectly. What matters to me is how a company responds when something does come up. Whenever I have brought a legitimate concern to California Energy's attention, they have acknowledged it and worked to correct it rather than ignoring it. That says a lot to me. We still have a few minor items for California Energy to finish, along with blowing the new insulation back into the attic once the electrical work is complete. I plan to update this review once everything is officially finished, but based on my experience so far, they have earned an A+ from me. The fact that I can remember so many employees by name, including Mitch, Phil, Jamie, Tony, John, Oscar, and Jose, probably says more than anything else I could write. Each one of them has made enough of an impression that I know exactly who they are and what role they have played throughout this project. To me, that speaks volumes about the connection this team makes with its customers and the amount of work everyone has put into getting the job done right. Eugene was patient and thoughtful as we discussed various options to maintain and protect the waterproof membrane and strengthen the structural integrity of our expansive decks on a hillside. He was mindful of our budget and, as a general contractor, identified and repaired another area in our crawlspace. He came up with creative solutions, and he has a great sense of design and style. We ended up replacing our upper deck with Trex composite boards. On the lower deck, his crew replaced most of the redwood boards and repainted the deck, even the wooden joists of the upper deck, for both wood preservation and aesthetic purposes. His crew paid attention to details. He also did the stone facing on our portico. Eugene went above and beyond. He's honest, experienced, and pleasant to work with. The team who actually completed the project had all the same positive attributes. Perhaps the most amazing part was that the team stayed on the promised schedule, even with a holiday and the heat being above 110 every day they were working on the project. They showed up on time every day to make sure the project was done. In addition to the heat, there was an issue with the windows being delayed in arriving from the manufacturer. Gary advocated for us to do all he could to get us the windows as quickly as possible (originally they were going to be 3 days late, but after he spoke with the powers that be, he got it bumped down to only 1 day late). One window even got delivered to the wrong place, and he did what he could to track it down and get it to us as soon as he could. We also had to address some electrical tasks during this project, some of which were very much intertwined with the work Gary was doing, and Gary worked well in coordinating with our electrician. Lastly, when the project was essentially done and Gary did the walkthrough, he kept his same work ethic and attention to detail. Throughout the project he was very interested in the big picture of the final project. During the walkthrough, he addressed everything we wanted fixed, no matter how small, and even found some items he added to his list that we did not notice, wanting to make sure nothing was left undone.
