Staff is absolutely dead from their ass up. Food is solid, great tuna burger, good tandoori chicken salad, good location, but just wasn't satisfied with overall experience. Waitress was so stressed and overwhelmed and the restaurant wasn't even remotely busy. Definitely a good place food-wise but service is the name of the game so not gonna cut it. would potentially give it another shot one day

Let me first say that the staff at Taverne are some of the friendliest and most doting servers you will ever come across. They are quick with a joke (but not a light of your smoke) and do their best to ease the pain of what has often been a slow and dysfunctional kitchen. While I wouldn't call myself a regular here, I eat here with family about 4 or 5 times a year. Don't get me wrong now. This place has a lot going for it; Free indoor parking in Westmount Square, a dark and cozy atmosphere, and a full bar with servers ready and willing to ply you with beverages. The atmosphere and clientele is akin to a Westmount country club if said club was located in the city. It's a bit of a scene, but nothing like some other establishments in this city. My issues with this establishment focus mainly on the food and the design of the menu. I like to I identify which dishes a restaurant produces as well or better than anyone else. Taverne has a warm bread pudding that might meet this criteria. Beyond that, I'm completely stumped. They try to be an Italian restaurant with a handful of pasta dishes, a French brasserie with their bavette and fries, and many other cuisines. Nothing here really knocks my socks off. Sometimes, in fact, the food is downright boring or poorly executed. Prices are high. Specials such as a rib steak can be through the roof. On a recent visit we ordered the chicken wing appetizer. For 15$ you get about 6 or 7 wings which right off the bat is annoying. Then, you notice that these wings are no bigger than your thumb. No crispiness whatsoever. Coated in what can only be described as a generic tabasco like sauce with a few crumbles of blue cheese. Guys, go to Old Orchard, go to Hurleys, go to Next Door pub. You could even try Buffalo Bills. You need a crash course in chicken wings and your license to serve them should be revoked until you can prove you can put out a meaty, flavourful wing that has some texture. Your technique of brining, smoking.....whatever...... just isn't working. We had the salmon tartare. It was tasty but forgettable and overpriced. Also, it used to come served atop a layer of avocado which has now been downgraded to cucumber. The price was not similarly downgraded however. We had some fries which were god awful. Usually the fries here are decent but this time tasted like oven baked McCain fries. Finally, my wife had the Cauliflower with middle eastern spicing and yogurt. It was edible but not memorable in any way. My BIGGEST gripe with this restaurant however is how they had the audacity to remove the 2 best items from their menu at dinner. You can no longer get their regular burger or the seared tuna burger. These 2 items used to be my favourite meals here. The burger was huge and dripping with goodness. The tuna burger was also a really nice pairing of comfort food with some finesse. I can only guess that they weren't turning an appropriate profit selling 19$ (or whatever they cost) burgers and wanted to force people to order a main course in the 35$ territory. This sucks. Maybe I don't want your take on chicken cacciatore or tired rigatoni dish. I want a burger and Taverne has ruled against me. Thanks for the memories guys!

Just know that the "comfort" in "comfort food" only applies until they give you the bill. Giving less than 4 stars wouldn't do Taverne justice, but there's room for improvement. Firstly, the service is just great. Tom and Michael are spectacular and valuable employees with a knack for working in the service industry. The appetizers and sides are also very solid, the salmon tartare was absolutely the correct answer for a salmon tartare. Perfect flavors and freshness. A++. Ordered the 45 ounce rib steak for the table. It came out lukewarm, pre-sliced, and somewhat tough and sinewy. It was also under seasoned and the plate was not warmed. I understand that this is not a steakhouse, but if there is a 45 ounce rib steak in the back that they expect to serve to customers, my philosophy is that it should be done with a more consideration than was given. Hopefully this feedback is valid.

It's been a few years since I've last been here with the Pandemic and all. Great choice to come on a Thursday evening. Indoor parking which going up 2 floors and you're at the entrance. The music was in the air and it was a full house with all the Covid precautions in place. What a inviting vibe throughout! It was such a pleasure seeing everyone laughing, grooving to the music as we all experienced daily but was on hold for a time. The host was so gracious and service was superb. The apple and endive salad with Prosciutto with a hint of cheese was so refreshing. All the flavours enmeshed, just woke up the palette. My main meal was PEI blue dot short rib special that was marinated for16 hrs... wow that's butter, with glazed carrots to perfection. Key lime pie and cappuccino was the end to my beginning. Definitely deserves the 5 stars because everyone is looking for that beautiful food experience with all the whistles and bells. See ya again....

The minute I stepped into the restaurant I felt like home!!! The ambiance, the service, the food and wine selection. Just perfect!! Steven and John make sure you have an unforgettable dining experience! It was a perfect night! Photo: Importation privée. Brack Mountain Wine Company. California. 50% Zinfandel, 25% Grenache and 25% Carignan. Jammy (I like this description used by John, the owner and the somm), notes of rich fruits and spices. Young and playful. The notes somewhat reminded me of Pinot Noir. All to say, it was an amazing night dining in Montreal!

New renos are fabulous. The place is very cosy and warm feeling even in daylight. The bar is now amazing with the perfect lighting. Greg at the bar is great and the tagliatelle carbonara is to live for!

Tucked away with a beautiful terrasse in the back, it's the kind of place you'd almost miss--but absolutely shouldn't. The service was fantastic from start to finish--attentive, warm, and genuinely welcoming without ever feeling overbearing. The food was equally impressive. Everything we tried was delicious and thoughtfully prepared, with portions that are just right. The beef and mushroom tartare was a standout--rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced--and the braised lamb cavatelli was simply outstanding. The lemon tiramisu for dessert was the best ive ever had. I'd never had the French Canadian heart-attack-on-a-plate, and was a little nervous as it just looks like it has A LOT going on. I sludged into La Banquise dead sober at 4:11am, as this is a legendary spot that is open 24 hours. I sat down in a bustling no frills atmosphere and remembered my deep appreciation for a 24-hour diner. You see people for who they really are this early in the morning. A couple in front of me was in a heated argument about what "being exclusive" really meant, while two separate groups of 4 to my right were feeling no pain and enjoying a poutine night cap. There I was, sipping on my black coffee mentally prepping myself for the 45 mile (72 km) day I had in front of me. The dichotomy of life. I asked the server what the most popular item was, and he said La Scooby. This monstrosity consisted of fresh cut fries, cheese, gravy, ground beef, bacon, onions, fried pickles, and caesar dressing garlic sauce. I got the small ($12.40 usd), but this thing was a TANK. It was bigger than my head and I have a HUGE head. The large must be a family style portion or somethin. Upon first bite, it was damn good. I completely see the poutine appeal. Is it an ideal meal dead sober at 4:11am? No, absolutely not, but this is an S-tier hangover food. Also, if there is ever a day when I need some extra calories, it's on a 100k step day. All the staff was so welcoming, and surprisingly chipper this early in the morning. SHOUTOUT TO LA BANQUISE! THANK YOU FOR FUELING THE JOURNEY! IG @johnny.novo Tiktok @jnov__ Substack @johnnynovo

I took my niece from New York City here because La Banquise is supposed to be the "must try" poutine spot in Montreal. We had a great night overall: soccer game, drinks at Mellon Brasserie (none of us were drunk; my wife was 100% sober). Everything was fun and chill. But La Banquise completely ruined the end of that trip, and I'm not okay with letting this go. We paid for the food and service. But it doesn't matter if you pay $1 or $100: at the end of the day, we were customers, and we deserved to be treated with respect. We waited for our Uber outside. It was cold, and I'm on crutches, so my injuries hurt badly in the cold. After waiting outside for a long time with the Uber not showing up, we went back inside to wait near the door, in the corner, not blocking anyone. The staff at the door immediately came in and started rudely and aggressively kicking us out. He refused to speak English with me after I clearly said, "I don't speak French, so talk to me in English." He kept talking French and was rude to my wife, my niece, and me. He told the waitress in French that we were "blocking the way," which was 100% false. (My wife speaks French) We were just standing near the entrance, waiting for a few minutes, trying to get out of the cold. When I went to the cashier and explained, "This guy is kicking me out. I just paid for my meal. But it doesn't matter if you pay $1 or $100: you're still a customer, and you shouldn't be kicked out and treated like trash just because you're waiting for your Uber on crutches. I'm on crutches, it's cold, and my Uber isn't here yet," they called a waitress who also started telling us to leave instead of helping. She didn't try to find a solution; she just said, "No, no, leave, leave." This is not just bad service. This is disgusting, disrespectful treatment of a paying customer with a mobility issue. My niece, who had a blast all night, ended the trip saying, "What the f....? You bring me here and they treat us like this?" She now has a bad impression of Montreal because of this place. My niece is from New York City, and she's also posting her own review. That review will be seen by people in New York and by tourists looking for recommendations. If you treat tourists like this, you're not just ruining one night, you're ruining the image of the whole city. Montreal is supposed to be a welcoming city for tourists and people looking to have fun and be treated with respect. La Banquise failed that completely. The food was okay, but the experience was terrible because of how we were treated. This is unacceptable. You should be ashamed of how you handled this.

His recommendation of the Beef Wellington was spot on (it's already one of our favorite dishes), but this was hands down the best we've ever had. I ordered the lobster risotto, which was excellent with just the right amount of spice. My son had the 10 oz striploin steak with homemade fries (chips), and it was absolutely delicious. I also loved the Canadian touch of coarse salt on the steak, plus the option to choose between Béarnaise or peppercorn sauce. Julien also mentioned their pastry chef placed second in a NY competition, and the desserts absolutely lived up to that reputation. We tried the pineapple and coconut pavlova and the "lick me hazelnut" ~ both beautifully presented and incredibly delicious. We also ordered iced coffee and a latte, and noticed something interesting: this was the second place where we found Canadian coffee to be smooth and mild ~ such a nice change from the often bitter, over-roasted American coffee. Yes, dinner was a bit steep ($300+), but it was worth every penny. Between the rich history, stunning design, outstanding service, and unique cuisine, I would highly recommend Bar George.
