The comforting nature of the atmosphere made its way into the dishes, which were unique to the neighbouring cuisines offered in Old Montreal. From the appetizer to the dessert, everything tasted amazing and had the right balance of flavours. Stash was the perfect meal in every way. The ambiance was cozy yet lively -- you didn't feel like you were in a library or a beer hall in terms of noise. I came as a party of 3 without a reservation on a Thursday night and we waited for around 20 minutes before we were seated which was not bad. - Krokiety - This was actually delicious and one of the best Polish items I've had. The green salad, although looking very plain at first, was actually delicious because the dressing was still warm and had a bit of sweetness that counteracted the leaves's bitterness. Also I was a big fan of the mushroom krokiety as the outside was perfectly breaded and fried with a lot of flavors, and the inside was just heaps of mushrooms. I was a big fan. - Croustade (Apple) - I was a bit disappointed by this dish. I thought the apple dessert would be warm and had a bit more layers to the flavor other than pure apple. I did really enjoy the sweet cream that they had on top which was more yogurt-like. I think more desserts should have yogurt-like creams instead of whipped cream or other sweeter options. "A whole lot of friends, first flight from Poland" (Drake and the Weeknd) Our first meal in Montreal was............ in a Polish restaurant! And it was a great one. The Stash Café is a cute restaurant on busy Rue Saint Paul Ouest with colorful red lanterns for lighting and church pews for seating at the window tables. This is real deal Polish food with beet soup, pickle soup, Pierogi, Kielbasa, pickled herring, potato pancakes, stuffed cabbage rolls, and znitzel all over the menu. We ordered the Pierogi appetizer (C$12) - "4 dumplings stuffed with beef OR cheese and potato OR cabbage and mushroom, served with caramelized onions, sauerkraut and sour cream on demand. We decided on the cheese and potato version, and they were excellent. We also went with an order of Sznycel Mielony (C$24) - "two breaded ground pork croquettes, served with a creamy mushroom sauce, potatoes and a choice of salad." The salad was a red cabbage slaw. This was a great dish, with two pretty hefty pork meatballs, two quarter potato spears, a yummy gravy, and a refreshing scoop of red cabbage. While spending the evening walking Rue Saint-Paul area in Ouest Montreal we came across Stash and were intrigued by their menu. Some items that looked great to us were the sole, perogies, and stuffed cabbage, so we went in. They were packed, but we were still able to find a table for our small group of three. Service was on point and helpful... Also spoke perfect English. The menu is loaded with many Polish/European delights, so we ordered a little bit of everything. We started with a mix of their pierogies which were pretty darn good, even though the dough was slightly too thick, the stuffing was great and the prep was perfect with diced onions on top. Their home made sauerkraut was incredible and tasted great on their kielbasa. Heir mustard was full of mustard grains and flavor and the combo of that with the saukraut and kielbasa was amazing! I would love that on a sandwich! We really enjoyed the stuffed cabbage, the flavors in the meat inside, which was very tender were excellent and the thin layer of cabbage on top was great. Their home made salads, like the beet and the potato salads were great too. Sole was excellent and served very simply with a side and with sliced almonds on top. Save room for dessert, the apple cobbler was not the traditional style we're used to in the States, but it was very flavorful and tender. We had read about Stash cafe and decided to give it a try and we are SO glad we did! We went on a Sunday evening at about 6 with my husband and I and our 3 kids (ages 5, 8, 10). There was no dedicated kids menu but the restaurant was super sweet to our kids. Our waiter was awesome- so positive, friendly and he got us a table without a reservation as we were there before the dinner rush. Sure enough the place filled up! The pierogis were incredible! Highly recommend, we ordered the entre portion and got a "mix" which is like a sampler. Our kids loved them! We also got the sausage and the potato pancake dish (sorry can't remember the names!) both were so delicious too. I also had a cup of the cold beet soup which was wonderful on a hot evening. The place mats are pretty and cheerful. The menu has all kinds of comforting dishes. We tried the Krokiety and Debutant plates, which were brought to us hot and freshly prepared, along with a small dish of sour cream. I a particularly liked the sweetness of the caramelized onions on the pierogis, and the mushroom-stuffed krokiet. The batters were not too heavy, and flavours were straightforward. A bit pricey (for Montreal) but overall excellent Polish food and great service. We came here 15 minutes after they opened on a Monday without a resevation. We were seated promptly in a bench/booth by the window but by the time we finished dinner, the place was packed! If we come again, I will definitely make a reservation. The kielbasa and the mustard that accompanied it was our favorite dish. Everything else we ordered was delicious as well but their kielbasa was just fire! My only regret were the sides we ordered with it (beet salad and saurkraut) because our pork kotlet (also very good) came with saurkraut as well. Wish I had ordered a different side salad as their side portions were generous. Service was honestly awesome. My two kids were probably the loudest people in the restaurant but the staff was very understanding. We were so impressed the first time we at there, about 10 years ago, that we made sure to make reservations previous to this latest time we travelled to Montreal. Which is saying a lot, because we were only passing through Montreal for one night. So glad we did, because when we got there, they were totally booked. For food, this would have been a 5/5 if it wasn't for the horrific service from the host. Seriously, my friend and I had just been talking about how everyone here is so nice and then the host was the single rude person we've encountered the entire time here. Let's start with the good though: food was excellent, and the service from everyone else was solid (although a little chaotic - maybe it's understaffed?). We got the potato and cheese pierogies and truly wished we'd gotten more. If you're telling yourself to get 4, just get 8. You'll regret not getting 8 like we did. We got the placki (potato pancakes) which were also delicious, but I think we'd wished we'd just gotten more pierogies (not because the placki wasn't good but because the pierogies were unreal good). For the main, we split the kielbasa which was EXCELLENT. The sauerkraut & potato salad on the side were great accompaniments, & the sausage was just so tender and well flavored. We finished with a peach crumble - delish. Great meal overall. Here is where I knocked the star down: we arrived at about 7:56, the two of us, with a reservation for 8pm. AFTER us, a party of 4 with an 8pm reservation and a party of like 10 with an 8pm showed up. The host himself was setting the tables alone (very slowly, while laughing and chatting with other employees), & proceeded to set the 10 top and grab all the tables and chairs and silverware etc extremely slowly. Multiple tables, including several two tops opened up - given we arrived first, we could have prioritized quickly setting up the two top so we could get seated but instead made us wait for the 10 top and 4 top to be seated even though once again they showed up AFTER and took substantially longer to set it up. I mentioned it to him like - can we please have our table set up, I can see it's right there and we've been waiting 15 minutes with a reservation in an extremely small space (there's very limited space to wait) with a crowd of 14 behind us. He snapped back rudely that he was working on our table (which seriously would have been the shortest to set up). After a bit more of a wait, he gave us the most backhanded apology - "I'm sorry for the wait, but the other parties were waiting too" in the most snarky way. Like, maybe just say "sorry for the wait?" And consider prioritizing tables based on order of arrival and time to set up. We shouldn't have had to wait for you to grab a bunch of tables and chairs for a party that showed up well after us. Regardless, very tasty meal. Such a lovely dining experience with authentic Polish cuisine! My hubby & I walked in w/o a reservation on a Saturday evening in March at 8:30pm. Despite still being full, we were seated right away at a cozy window table. Upon walking in, you are greeted with wonderful live music from a very talented piano player right at the entrance. Very authentic Polish food uncorrupted by other influences. I highly recommend this for anyone hoping to eat authentic Polish food. For people used to french/Italian food, this would be a journey to a different section of the palate, but a worthwhile one for sure. Haven't had good Polish food since Chicago, and I'm glad I found this place in Montreal. It's in the middle of the old town and the decor was filled with Polish cultural posters. The atmosphere was lively and there was someone playing the piano as well. We orderem the żurek, flaki, gołąbki, strogonow and bigosz. Żurek and flaki came out pretty quickly since they're ready made. The żurek was spot on, it was as sour as it should and was perfectly seasoned with parsley, the only thing missing was the small strips of pickles. Flaki was good as well, although it was a bit more watery that I was hoping and lacked a bit more carrots and black pepper. After the soups, we waited about 15min for the rest. The strogonow was perfect in every sense, the gravy was exactly how it should be (maybe from cans) the beef was the right cut and was hard and would shatter into smaller pieces as you chew (thus the cut is important). To my surprise, the potatoes were exactly the way they should be, not too hard, not too soft, with tinge of salt and parsley, and as bland as they should be. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's tasty, just the simple fact that it's true to how it's cooked in Poland. The bigos was great, a little too sour and a bit more bland that I'm used to, but good none the less. Surprisingly we had to ask for bread that's typically served with it (we also had to ask for bread with flaki as well). The only dish that's not amazing was the gołąbki. Perhaps the chef was a bit off today, but it had too much oregano in the filling, and it was overwhelming. It was also a bit short on the tomato sauce on the inside. It was served with mizeria and they got that perfect as well, the right type and amount of sour cream was used and it was very refreshing. read more

This place had such a great vibe for a monday night. Shortly after I arrived someone started playing the piano and that really set the mood. I ordered the pierogis and kielbasa and they were heaven. One of my go-to spots. It's our favorite Montreal casual dining spot. When you walk in, it feels like you're transported to old school Eastern Europe. With dark red motif and overhanging lights in a diner style setup. The lunch special here is incredible. It comes with appetizer, entree, dessert, and a choice of drink. The borscht flavor here is great. The mixed plate is probably our favorite entree but everything is incredible. The side that the mixed plate serves, the sauerkraut with meat is SO GOOD. I honestly would order just a plate of that to eat if I could! The kielbasa plate came with an incredible mustard. Their sauces are SO GOOD! The dessert - a choice of peach or apple crumble may not look like much but it's incredible. Magical night. Arrived Saturday night around 8 with no reservation. Host was gracious and welcoming even though we should have made one. Waited only maybe 5 minutes. Very charming, dark ambiance with fun red lights. Felt like a perfect place to stay in the Montreal scene. Painist in the entryway was mr congeniality and we really enjoyed talking to him. The first time I went in here - to Stash Cafe' in Old Montreal - I was fairly wowed. Part of it was that this spontaneous conversation with the people at an adjacent table began and I forgot to take photos, thus I forgot what I had ordered. It was very good, though, albeit a little bit pricey, given that country-style Polish food can be had in diners in any U.S. community with a larger Polish population. Add to that service that was excellent. Fast forward to this last visit to Stash. It was a little crowded at night, but it was crowded last time, too. I looked at the menu and decided on a sampler platter. It had four items on it. I asked the host what he recommended and he recommended the beef stroganoff, which I did not go with. Everything on the platter was somewhat ordinary, the soup was more of a broth, and the small dessert that came with the table d'hote that evening was a little flat. The beverage was drip coffee, which was fairly good. Prices have risen in line with how they've risen elsewhere, so that's moot. As for the service, there was no checking back. (Again, it was crowded, but that wasn't an excuse, eliciting the appropriate "entry level" tip.) If I needed something, which was nothing out of the ordinary, I just intercepted another employee walking by and it was provided. I later looked at other people's Yelp photos. The presence of something dark red colored (the red cabbage) rang a bell. That's what accompanied the beef stroganoff ... and that's why a dinner there several years ago turned out to be good. It was the beef stroganoff platter that I had had in the past! It seems there's a lot of halo effect and groupthink when it comes to reviewing Stash. This is down home Polish country cooking. It's not haute cuisine. (In a similar vein, arancini - stuffed Italian rice croquettes - which are ubiquitous in southern Italy and reasonably priced, are trendy items on this side of the Atlantic that cost quite a bit more, are not as filling, and are not as good.) Stash can evaluate their menu items across the board. They can also be more attentive to the patrons in the restaurant, which might be challenging in a crowded restaurant in Vieux-Montreal during the peak color wave. Ratcheting up the uneven spots on the menu could easily take Stash to 4 stars. read more

Great brunch spot we found while walking around Montreal area. We came here right after going to mass at the Notre Dame church. We never been to a Polish restaurant so we're excited to try it. They only have 3 brunch items on the menu: breakfast with sausage, with mushroom, and sweet crepe. We had the eggs with Polish sausage and the sweet one and they were both delicious. We also had the pierogis and they were really good. The experience was great, the interior of the restaurant felt like an old inn from the olden days. The seating was church benches which made the whole experience a little unnerving but cool nonetheless. To go to the bathroom we had to walk a set of stone spiral stairs (kind of like going to a dungeon) that led downstairs to a set of heavy wood doors. The landscape is so hilly in Montreal that even going downstairs there were light coming through the windows. The servers were all really nice, friendly and accommodating. After a handful of friends recommended this place for us, we decided to eat here on our first night in Montreal. It tasted more like heated up V8 than a soup since it had no content inside and was just liquid. We also ordered the Bigos, Golabki, and Strogonow. They were pretty good, and I thoroughly enjoyed them. But, none of them really wow-ed me. My favorite by far was the Golabki, and I would go back just to have that again.
