My husband and I had a very lovely date night at Modavie. We are glad we had a reservation because it was packed on a Sunday evening! We were seated at a lovely table for two by a window. The service at first was a bit slow, but that was understandable given how busy the restaurant was. Our server, Yan, was incredibly personable. He had excellent suggestions for dinner. We each started with cocktails, and enjoyed the ambiance. There was a live band, but we were in a different room. It wasn't loud like you would expect. 5/5 service. Beef Tartare: 5/5. This was an excellent start. The appetizer sizing was a little small for two people. If you want a little more, I'd recommend the entree size. It comes with fries. But it was delicious. The crostini's that came with it were a little overpowering, but the tartare itself was delicious. Duck Confit: 5/5. This duck was INCREDIBLE. Perfectly cooked, crispy skin, tender and juicy flavor. An incredible sauce. Delicious veggies and potatoes. The only thing I did not like about this dish was how quickly we ate it! Dessert (not pictured): 5/5. It's a pretty good restaurant in the middle of Old Montreal. Decor is nice and services is attentive. I can't speak French so I appreciate the Englishmen menu. I do recommend making a reservation on open table prior to coming. Here is what I think of the food: Seasoning is generally saltier but not too overly. Escargot or the snails is yummy. It comes with the option of cheese on top. Dressed heavy with olive oil and garlic. They remove the shell so it makes it approachable if you were nervous about trying. Cheese & Charcuterie board is as what you imagined. It can't go wrong. Rack of Lamb was good. I do recommend highly. It comes with our 4-5 bones worth of protein with potatoes & veggies. Lost track of how many bones because it was eaten so fast. Duck confit was average. Let me explain, duck was average but the amount of spinach I gotten and how potatoes on the plate was good. Sides out shine the protein here. Side of Foie Gras was perfect because I was worried about having too much food. It did come on a small plate because it's a side dish and it was fatty and salty. Intermission was the best cocktail of the night. Fruity with a star anise on top so you smell it while drinking it because it was so close to your nose. Jazz District was okay. After doing a good amount of research and comparing multiple spots, I decided to book Modavie for one of the dinners during my brother's bachelor party weekend. Everything was good, with the highlight for me being the poutine. I'll be honest I was kinda poutined out after sampling so many throughout the weekend, but this was still enjoyable which says something about the quality. In addition to the lamb section, they had a variety of pastas and other mains to choose from. I decided to get the Basque chicken which was served with a piperade and potatoes. This was really good - the chicken was juicy and the piperade added great layers of flavor and texture. Most of us were full so we bypassed dessert. While the food was good, I wouldn't say it was 5-star worthy - but you won't get a bad meal here; the dishes are solid. What was the most memorable aspect of the evening for me, though, was the service. Iman was outstanding - she made sure we were taken care of the entire evening, was on top of all of our orders, and was really the epitome of professionalism and hospitality. We walked in on a Saturday with a party of seven without a no reservation and they made it work. Already impressive! TLDR: $800 for 7 people to eat a dinner that was really, really salty. The waiter (Tyler) was very kind and attentive. The mojitos are very good here. However, the food is quite mediocre for the price and status of the restaurant. The French onion soup was not very good. Extremely salty, not much bread, a LOT of oil on top, and the broth was thick like gravy. Traditional French onion soup is supposed to be relatively thin, which I expected from such an expensive French restaurant in Montreal. Very disappointing. The salmon was mostly dry and not very flavorful. There was also a considerable sized puddle of oil pooling on one side of the plate (pic included). When you pay $40+ for a single piece of fish, you'd expect it to be flavorful and moist, and not in oil puddles. The French fries looked and tasted like McDonald's fries, except super salty, (and McDonald's fries are better). The steak frites were also EXTREMELY salty. Bread for the table additionally was extremely chewy and a bit dry. It tastes like rolls that come in a bag from the grocery store. I would have given this restaurant 2 stars, but they get 3 because the wait staff was good and they gave us 2 complementary chocolate mousses for the table since my group was celebrating a wedding. This was such a special meal for me and my family during our first visit to Old Montreal We stopped in for an early dinner and from the moment we walked in, we knew it was going to be good. Our server Christian was awesome...so attentive, welcoming and kind. The space was so beautiful. We were sat in the more quiet part of the restaurant which we enjoyed. It is to die for...the butter and garlic might cause a heart attack, but your last moments on earth will be heavenly! I love duck confit, so had to order and was not disappointed. Fall of the bone tender. The sauce was loaded with umami. The spinach and baby potatoes on the side were perfect match. I paired with glass of Bordeaux (only one in menu by the glass) and it paired very nicely. After dinner I enjoyed a glass of Sauternes. It wasn't on menu but after asking they admitted they had some. The sweet wine was perfect ending. They have live jazz music starting at 7pm. I couldn't get reservations, so I came early before the music. It would be truly magical to dine with live jazz. It just requires scheduling in advance. UPDATE: I ended up staying for music and ordered cheesecake (topped with blackberry puree). Cheesecake was super sense and house made puree was decadent. There's a lot of great food and great music in Montreal. Modavie has both. Upon our hotel's concierge recommendation, we went to listen to some jazz and have some good food at Modavie, and were blown out of the water. We didn't think we needed reservations for a Monday night but we got there and it was packed. They made space for us at the bar and we ordered. The band was amazing and we were told there's a larger room upstairs with a different band. Now for the food: spectacular all around. We ordered poutine with lamb, the chicken and the salmon. I expected it to be good because everything in Montreal up to now had been great, and for a first time poutine taster, I was a bit apprehensive but OMG was it insane good! The fries were cooked to perfection, the sauce was like no gravy I've ever tasted before and the lamb melted in your mouth faster than the cheese curds. For my first time, it feels like all downhill from there. How can we top it?! With delicious salmon and chicken dancing on the palate. All that while listening to the most angelic sounds coming from the vocalist of the band made our experience the very best of Montreal. Modavie is now on my must-do list. My favorite restaurant that I visited while in Montreal! We were promptly seated upon arrival and settled in for a wonderful meal. Our server was knowledgeable and helped guide us through what to order while being very realistic and honest on portion sizes and how many apps our table needed (always appreciate not being over sold!) Each app and dinner was better than the last. My personal favorite was the poutine with lamb (so tender and flavorful) and the duck confit. The French bread basket for the table was INCREDIBLE - our table could have made meals off that alone! The only "lacking" part was the dessert. The creme brûlée was fine, but was not living up to the expectations of all dishes leading into dessert. A great option for a French dinner after a stroll around the beautiful streets of Old Montreal. We arrived a little after 5pm and there was no wait for a table. Service was very pleasant but a bit inattentive since water refills were sparse throughout our meal. We were seated at a corner table and got a wonderful view of the cobblestone streets outside. The food: Loved: - Complimentary bread and butter- Served fresh right out of the oven! - Lamb chops- Cooked a perfect medium rare. Very juicy and flavorful. - Mussels and fries Ok: - Scallop grenobloise- The texture of the scallops and the flavor of the sauce was good but it was $25 for 3 very tiny pieces of scallop. You might as well order another main at this price point. - Garlic snails- I think I've only had escargot once before and honestly forgot what they taste like but the ones here were very small and pretty much disintegrated once I started chewing on them so ended up not really tasting like anything. There's an option to add cheese and usually adding cheese to anything makes it taste better but not in this case. The cheese was very strong and completely overpowered the flavor of the snails. If I were to come back I'll probably sub the scallops and snails for duck confit and salmon filet since we saw other tables order these and they looked delicious. But overall, quite an enjoyable dinner in a picturesque part of town. Note: I saw a review that said that there's a requirement for each member in your party to order a main dish and this was confirmed when I contacted them prior to our visit. I would give this place six stars if I could. Our party of eight was promptly seated by the funniest, most welcoming host. Lorenzo was very knowledgeable and accommodating. Super patient as my kids ordered in their middle school level French. My kids decided to forgo the kids menu and ordered the seafood linguini and salmon risotto. They killed it, slow roasted carrots, tomatoes, squash, and all. They even tried mussels for the first time and approved. If that's not a win, I don't know what is. The French onion soup was the best I've ever tasted- the depth of the soup was lip smacking and it was not salty like many others I've tasted. My friend had the barramundi catch of the day which was also superb. Our server recommended the Bloody Caesar as 'an only can get in Canada' cocktail made with Clamato juice when my friend inquired. He even offered to give it on the house if it wasn't to her liking. As more and more guests walked through the door, our server continued to be attentive and shared about his upbringing in Canada. The escargot is already shelled which I appreciate and paired very nicely with the broiled cheese top. I didn't catch any dirt in my bites which was well noticed and obvious they are preparing these well. The seasonal pasta was really delightful with the noodles well coated in sauce and the duck was tender and paired nicely with the mushrooms. Although the portion is not enough for leftovers it is appropriately filling! The complimentary bread with butter was also appreciated. I also came around my birthday and am grateful for the free dessert I was given topped with a sparkler. Got a weekend dinner reservation for our last meal in Montreal and so glad we chose Modavie. We arrived a few minutes early and were led to our table upstairs. The waitress for us was super friendly and the service overall was great. Our waitress recommended lamb so we got lamb chops and the seafood linguine and they were both so good. Great flavors for both dishes which we enjoyed with our wine selections. It's a very cute spot with live music which we thought would make the spot very loud but surprisingly it ended up being a good volume even though we sat right next to the stage.
