From reservation to check was an easy experience. We did have one hiccup I'll mention below, but otherwise I would have rated this at five stars. Light was quite beautiful building an ambiance of elegance. The staff were friendly and reservations online were quick and easy; yes they had our reservation and took us to our seat as soon as we arrived. The service was excellent, we did ask to change a dish after ordering and it never came, but I attribute that to a language barrier, me not knowing their language and them trying to be clear. We did order one dish that we've had before that was definitely not fresh, and I would still have given five stars when we sent it back but the chef argued that's how it should taste, through the waiter checking, and I felt that was worth loosing a star. The rest of the meal was Michelin star ready! Beautiful presentation, delicate flavors, and wonderful aromas. Located right in the heart of Vieux Montréal, just a three-minute walk from our hotel, this spot has a cozy wine cellar vibe with dark interiors, comfortable chairs, and stone walls. We started with bone marrow, a first for both of us. My dining companion wasn't a fan, and I'm still processing--it was rich, greasy, and intensely flavorful. An experience, for sure. The place is lively and loud , but still able to have a convo. The music is lovely, we purposely booked our seating around the time live jazz is on. We had two sets of the two course deal, with snails and tuna tartare to start and steak frites and cod as mains. We also ordered à la carte, the lamb chop and then for dessert, the Palais Royale. I would say the prix fix menu items are just ok. The lamb chops were a bit undersalted but otherwise good. The dessert was good if you like chocolate and hazelnut. This was such a special meal for me and my family during our first visit to Old Montreal We stopped in for an early dinner and from the moment we walked in, we knew it was going to be good. Our server Christian was awesome...so attentive, welcoming and kind. The space was so beautiful. We were sat in the more quiet part of the restaurant which we enjoyed. We stopped by Modavie for lunch, and the space was quiet. The service was good and the tartare with bone marrow was actually quite nice, and flavourful without being too heavy. Unfortunately, that's where the meal peaked for us. The rest of the dishes didn't really hit the mark. The duck confit, in particular, was underwhelming. It was greasy with a strong duck smell that lingered. It just didn't have the balance you'd expect from a good confit. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience, but nothing that would make me want to come back. Speechless. It was phenominal! They serve French cuisine, like many in Montreal. I started with the Escargot (garlic snails). The Montreal version comes baked with a local cheese on top! It is to die for...the butter and garlic might cause a heart attack, but your last moments on earth will be heavenly! I love duck confit, so had to order and was not disappointed. Fall of the bone tender. The sauce was loaded with umami. The spinach and baby potatoes on the side were perfect match. I paired with glass of Bordeaux (only one in menu by the glass) and it paired very nicely. After dinner I enjoyed a glass of Sauternes. It wasn't on menu but after asking they admitted they had some. The sweet wine was perfect ending. They have live jazz music starting at 7pm. I couldn't get reservations, so I came early before the music. It would be truly magical to dine with live jazz. It just requires scheduling in advance. UPDATE: I ended up staying for music and ordered cheesecake (topped with blackberry puree). Cheesecake was super sense and house made puree was decadent. The music this night was more blues than jazz, which was great because I live the blues! read more

Modavie is an absolute 10/10 date spot if you're simply visiting Montreal or live around the area. The ambiance and the live music was a 10/10. But the highlight of the meal, was our server's demeanor and the profiterole we ordered at the end. Special mention to the mushroom risotto and the sweetbread appetizer. Yum. The lamb chops were cooked great and almost perfect, if it weren't for the fat cap that was proportionately overwhelming compared to the amount of meat on it. Some people are into that. I would give this place six stars if I could. Our party of eight was promptly seated by the funniest, most welcoming host. Lorenzo was very knowledgeable and accommodating. Super patient as my kids ordered in their middle school level French. My kids decided to forgo the kids menu and ordered the seafood linguini and salmon risotto. They killed it, slow roasted carrots, tomatoes, squash, and all. They even tried mussels for the first time and approved. If that's not a win, I don't know what is. The French onion soup was the best I've ever tasted- the depth of the soup was lip smacking and it was not salty like many others I've tasted. My friend had the barramundi catch of the day which was also superb. Our server recommended the Bloody Caesar as 'an only can get in Canada' cocktail made with Clamato juice when my friend inquired. He even offered to give it on the house if it wasn't to her liking. As more and more guests walked through the door, our server continued to be attentive and shared about his upbringing in Canada. Upon our hotel's concierge recommendation, we went to listen to some jazz and have some good food at Modavie, and were blown out of the water. We didn't think we needed reservations for a Monday night but we got there and it was packed. They made space for us at the bar and we ordered. The band was amazing and we were told there's a larger room upstairs with a different band. Now for the food: spectacular all around. We ordered poutine with lamb, the chicken and the salmon. I expected it to be good because everything in Montreal up to now had been great, and for a first time poutine taster, I was a bit apprehensive but OMG was it insane good! The fries were cooked to perfection, the sauce was like no gravy I've ever tasted before and the lamb melted in your mouth faster than the cheese curds. For my first time, it feels like all downhill from there. How can we top it?! With delicious salmon and chicken dancing on the palate. All that while listening to the most angelic sounds coming from the vocalist of the band made our experience the very best of Montreal. Modavie is now on my must-do list. My favorite restaurant that I visited while in Montreal! We were promptly seated upon arrival and settled in for a wonderful meal. Our server was knowledgeable and helped guide us through what to order while being very realistic and honest on portion sizes and how many apps our table needed (always appreciate not being over sold!) Each app and dinner was better than the last. My personal favorite was the poutine with lamb (so tender and flavorful) and the duck confit. The French bread basket for the table was INCREDIBLE - our table could have made meals off that alone! The only "lacking" part was the dessert. The creme brûlée was fine, but was not living up to the expectations of all dishes leading into dessert. A great option for a French dinner after a stroll around the beautiful streets of Old Montreal. We arrived a little after 5pm and there was no wait for a table. Service was very pleasant but a bit inattentive since water refills were sparse throughout our meal. We were seated at a corner table and got a wonderful view of the cobblestone streets outside. The food: Loved: - Complimentary bread and butter- Served fresh right out of the oven! - Lamb chops- Cooked a perfect medium rare. Very juicy and flavorful. - Mussels and fries Ok: - Scallop grenobloise- The texture of the scallops and the flavor of the sauce was good but it was $25 for 3 very tiny pieces of scallop. You might as well order another main at this price point. - Garlic snails- I think I've only had escargot once before and honestly forgot what they taste like but the ones here were very small and pretty much disintegrated once I started chewing on them so ended up not really tasting like anything. There's an option to add cheese and usually adding cheese to anything makes it taste better but not in this case. The cheese was very strong and completely overpowered the flavor of the snails. If I were to come back I'll probably sub the scallops and snails for duck confit and salmon filet since we saw other tables order these and they looked delicious. But overall, quite an enjoyable dinner in a picturesque part of town. Note: I saw a review that said that there's a requirement for each member in your party to order a main dish and this was confirmed when I contacted them prior to our visit. A cozy sit down restaurant with delicious offerings. I got both the cheese topped escargot and seasonal duck demi glaze pasta with mushrooms. The escargot is already shelled which I appreciate and paired very nicely with the broiled cheese top. I didn't catch any dirt in my bites which was well noticed and obvious they are preparing these well. The seasonal pasta was really delightful with the noodles well coated in sauce and the duck was tender and paired nicely with the mushrooms. Although the portion is not enough for leftovers it is appropriately filling! The complimentary bread with butter was also appreciated. I also came around my birthday and am grateful for the free dessert I was given topped with a sparkler. Got a weekend dinner reservation for our last meal in Montreal and so glad we chose Modavie. We arrived a few minutes early and were led to our table upstairs. The waitress for us was super friendly and the service overall was great. Our waitress recommended lamb so we got lamb chops and the seafood linguine and they were both so good. Great flavors for both dishes which we enjoyed with our wine selections. It's a very cute spot with live music which we thought would make the spot very loud but surprisingly it ended up being a good volume even though we sat right next to the stage. We shared a house salad to start and while that may seem dull to some, the dressing was exquisite. I had the mushroom risotto and wow, so delicious and flavorful! We visited Montreal for my birthday around late November and Modavie was recommended to us. If you are looking for French and an ambiance around the old port then this restaurant is worth it. We were seated quickly and the hostess showed us a coat rack for jackets etc there was also a 2-hour minimum since it was a Friday night but trust me that's all you'll need. If you want a more bar and lively ambiance then stay on the first floor there are singers with upbeat music on the left side of the restaurant while you enter while the right side is more intimidating. If you prefer an even more intimate experience then ask to be seated upstairs where the singer and musicians play more jazz type of music. One thing to note the upstairs chairs and seats are small! But we were comfortable. Our order consisted of the daily portage which consisted of leeks and potatoes it was so tasty! From the appetizer section, we ordered some calamari which was our favorite. For dinner, we ordered the duck confit and the mushroom risotto along with two cocktails the Kiss from a Rose which is lavender infused, and a Wake Me Up which had Johnny Walker liquor. We asked for a dessert to celebrate my birthday and were happily surprised to find out that it was on the house! The server brought the Chocolate mousse pyramid along with the candle. Really tasty dessert. Overall service was very attentive they are bilingual so no need to worry if you don't speak French. We enjoyed Modavie's food, service, and ambiance. read more

Fantastic experience. My favorite place of the trip. The live music was stellar and the singer had a very deep voice, sort of a Janis Joplin vibe. The song choices were also excellent. Our server was so friendly and helpful. The wine selection was top notch and I got to enjoy one of my favorite right bank wines.
