Cotto restaurant Rome…read more We discovered Cotto quite by accident. We were wandering past while staying at a local hotel, and saw their happy hour sign. We ended up coming for happy hour and enjoying delicious beverages and excellent charcuterie and then suddenly live music began to play. Turns out every Thursday and Friday night they have a live trumpeter playing incredible jazz, and standards. We ended up staying for dinner that night. And returning two more nights during our stay because the food and atmosphere was excellent. The Cuban trumpet player had style and his shoes were remarkable. On return visits, we ended up ordering the most delicious duck breast and the absolute best risotto with porcini mushrooms that we have ever had. All of this, with a jazz, trumpet, a magnificent vibe, and an overall wonderful experience that we counted as one of the best that we had during our Rome visit. We tried the…read moretrick of walking a few blocks away from the main tourist attractions, but still found ourselves in the area where restaurants seemed to be less authentic. We found this restaurant that was an 8 minute walk from our hotel and it was THE BEST Italian food we had during our whole trip! Location: this restaurant wasn't on a busy or bustling street. It was maybe 1-2 blocks away from the main road and tucked away. Seating: they had outdoor and indoor options. We were surprised with how much space was inside - they had about 2 floors to accommodate guests in addition to their outdoor seating. We sat inside where we noticed there were a number of local patrons enjoying their meal and speaking with the owners. As soon as we noticed the locals here, we thought we finally found a gem. Food: - the bruschetta was the best of our various finds on our trip. It was the only one that had greens on it which we were thrilled to see (there was a restaurant we visited that only had tomatoes and no basil or arugula). - the carbonara was great too. The sauce really had the flavor of the guanciale. The waiter was kind enough to offer Parmesan on the side to add in addition to the meal (we didn't ask for it!). Based on the menu, the pasta was homemade. - the spaghetti with clams was amazing as well. The sauce was light and flavorful and tasted like the sea. Similar to the carbonara, the waiter offered fresh ground pepper without us asking. It's a nice gesture knowing that most Italian places will frown at you for wanting to alter the chef's creation (sometimes you just need a little extra kick!!). - the tirimisu was very light. It came in a single serve glass jar. Though, we did notice there wasn't a whole lot of lady fingers compared to the mascarpone cheese. Also, there was a lot of chocolate powder. Nonetheless, still tasty and the perfect amount for 1 person. Wait staff: we appreciated our waiter and the overall waitstaff. Most tourist traps have waiters waiting for you outside as you walk by already offering you a table before you even know if you want to eat there. These waiters did not offer us a table upon seeing us. It was only until we approached with intent to eat here that they gave us the time of day. Also, we did notice that all of the wait staff appeared to be of Italian descent. We went to a few other places with folks that didn't seem to be Italian which had us questioning the authenticity. Overall: it was a great experience and we were thrilled to have found this place given our bad luck with Roman tourist traps. We can say we had a good authentic meal before ending our trip!!

We started with the focaccia w olive pâte and chick pea w rosemary and hot peppers which were both simple yet flavorful. Their Carbonara was classic and creamy, with crispy guanciale and just the right peppery kick. The roast lamb? Roasted to perfection - it was tender , juicy, and beautifully seasoned. For desserts, based on our server's recos: homemade tiramisù that was light yet rich, and pistachio gelato with hot chocolate sauce that I'm still thinking about.
