    Greek coffee.
    Emily B.

I've been coming to Brunswick since I was born and this is my favorite restaurant in town... and to think I only found it this past summer! Taverna Khione is a welcome change from the all too common blt, fish & chips, and lobster roll fare in the area. Don't get me wrong, those are all good, but sometimes you need something different! The Food: -I recommend starting with the Tzatziki and bread. The Fava is good too, but the Tzatziki is just a little better. -Next, you MUST order the Soutzoukakia -- "Veal and beef meatballs with cumin and allspice; white wine-tomato sauce," according to their website, and oh so yummy. -Last time I was there, I got the special which was veal... no one was more surprised than I was when it stole the show! Their lamb is usually very good as well. That being said, they do change up their menu and I would definitely ask your server what they recommend. -Finish it all off with a greek coffee. Yamas! Service: I know a lot of folks have complaints about the service. And while you definitely can't expect to be fawned over here, our food has always been very timely. This won't be helpful for visitors, but as we've become regulars the service has improved and we quite enjoy that aspect as well now. Reservations: You need to make one. Every time I've eaten here people have been turned away. Parking: There is a small lot to the left of the Taverna. We've never had trouble finding parking there. P.S. I didn't mention it, but wine is a must here!

I really enjoyed driving through the town of Brunswick but mostly because we landed at this location! The restaurant is in Maine but felt we were in Santorini. They have an amazing selection of wine that pairs well with their menu. We were greeted by an amazing waitress who took great care of us and made sure to present the homemade desert which was delicious! Don't miss this spot when in Brunswick :-)

Owners disappointing comments back. Visiting from out of town, did not see their website. Just would like other diners to be aware.

Walked in with a group of 2 on a Wednesday evening for dinner. I did not think I'd need a reservation and half of the restaurant was empty. The waitresses asked us to wait outside on the street to see if she could seat us. Waited about 5 minutes and she did not come back! So found another restaurant around the corner that had much better customer service. I can not speak to the food, but would not come back!

Wow this says so much about there performance!!! Also I didn't look at your website because I was a walk in dumb ass!!!

1/2 the place is empty walked in for 2 & asked to wait on the street to see if they have available tables on a Wednesday... Total bar empty & 1/2 the tables empty... so we just left & went to the The Great Impasta who was full & said it will only be 5-10 mins &!was supper nice... The response from the owner says it all!!! First I was a walk in & didn't ever look at your BS website & your response SEES IT ALL ON YOUR PROBLEMS!!!

Hallelujah - this restaurant makes me so happy. We decided to check Taverna Khione on a whim realizing we were both free one chilly Saturday night. We drove up to Brunswick and experienced pure heaven. The atmosphere is homey and almost like a private dining experience. We went all out and got way too many dishes - but it was all worth it. Get prepared to eat SO MUCH FETA. The grilled feta with honey was epic. Get all the spreads and all the bread. They make the bread in house and it's all really mouth watering, if you can't tell. The spinach and Philo dough was cooked perfectly - get the lamb as an entree if you can really appreciate a perfectly cooked juicy, medium rare piece of lamb meat. For dessert, we enjoyed the Batak (kind of like philo with a more custardy rice pudding filling, with a specialty rose dessert liquor. If you enjoy spots like Lost kitchen and primo you will love Taverna Khione. Thank you thank you for such a wonderful meal!

We loved the Grecian - a Greek themed mixed appetizer plate with yummy pitas. The only addition that would have been good was a wedge of lemon but we devoured it before asking for one. LOL. We shared the shrimp appetizer- Gamberi e Agrumi- which was cooked perfectly but honestly it was the sauce that stole the show! Pistachio orange honey sauce - mmmm- so good. Then we shared Keftedes which was nice - half vegetarian for me and half lamb/beef. They were good but we couldn't stop thinking about the shrimp sauce. I had some Greek red wine which was fabulous!! We made a note to ourselves to be sure and stop here anytime we are in Brunswick.

The menu is pretty small and the dishes are not fancy, but this is more than made up for by the bold, fresh flavors, less-common ingredients, artful presentation, and generous portions. And equally importantly, creativity. Take the parmigiana, for example. Rather than boring, dry chicken breast theirs are made with boneless thighs, a much more interesting choice. In the carbonara, where you might expect bacon, something better: guanciale. Decorative herbs? Not the common parsley sprigs, instead beautiful purple micro-basil. The pastas: every one is made fresh in house, not dried. Excellent service as well. My waiter, Lucas, could not have been better, in every way. As for the bartender, Russell, the specialty cocktails are his own creations, with whimsical names, ingredients many of which I've never heard of, and the two I tried were fantastic. And he seemed genuinely pleased when I complimented him on this as I was leaving. The only service flaw - minor - was a delay in getting my first drink, which arrived after my appetizer. Appetizer was Arancini. Crunchy coating, and inside a risotto-style rice, al dente, along with asparagus, guanciale, and two cheeses for added interest. A beautiful presentation, artfully drizzled with lemon aioli (the lemon too subtle) and purple micro-basil. Two large pieces, and because I was dining solo I took one home for breakfast - along with half the generously-sized dessert cake. My cocktails: Eve's Temptation: Caraway-thyme infused vodka, Oloroso sherry, Dolin dry vermouth, apple, lemon. Hattan Bow Tie: Basil Hayden bourbon, Cocchi Barolo Chinato, Pernod Absinthe Superiore, flamed orange. Wish I could have tried every one! There's also a very interesting-sounding wine list including a red sparking Lambrusco dessert wine, served chilled, that I wanted to try but didn't. Lucas recommended the special pasta of the day, a simple dish of house-made spaghetti, romano, Calabrian chilis, garlic (lots and lots of it!), parsley, and bread crumbs. I don't normally go for pasta entrees, especially simple ones like this, but in this case it sounded interesting and I trusted his recommendation - after adding the optional grilled shrimp and guanciale. These additions raised the price considerably, but it was so worth it. The fresh pasta was perfectly cooked and the cheeses and bread crumbs added body without making it too heavy. The shrimps were very large, not overcooked, fresh, and loaded with more garlic flavor. The tails were not removed, which always slightly annoys me. The guanciale added smokiness and textural interest. More purple micro-basil for garnish. Pretty to be sure but disappointing to see it again; they used that on the arancini. As for the heat: it was more than mild from the chilis but by no means hot. The most assertive flavor was the garlic, much of it raw. Maybe a bit excessive but I'd rather have too much than too little. A good-sized portion but not huge, just the right amount to feel satisfied but not stuffed. And I left room for dessert! Dessert options were limited, even more so than the entrees. I decided on the pistachio olive oil cake. My take is it's like a pound cake but made with olive oil instead of butter. Olive oil was also drizzled on the plate and over the whipped cream; interesting. Lots of pistachio flavor, in the cake itself and also in the candied pistachios mixed in and sprinkled over the whipped cream which was flavored and firm. I ate one of the two slices and that was enough, taking the rest home. When I opened the box the next day I saw that they had even packed the leftover whipped cream in a small container, and it was still firm, not runny. Impressive. Disappointingly, there are no ice cream or gelato offerings for dessert. Lucas agreed with me that it seems a strange omission for an Italian restaurant. The room is comfortable and attractive, natural wood, old-fashioned cabinets, cork and burlap dominant in the decor. Plant prints, mosaics made from wine corks, an antique dresser in the men's room. The bar, dominant in the room (no TVs - yeah!), is apparently the place to meet and greet in Brunswick. I lost count of the number of hugs exchanged between the many people coming and going over the 90 minutes I was there. No hugs for me but I enjoyed watching the activity.

The pita and tzatziki and all ingredients in the Gyros tasted super fresh and both tofu and chicken were well cooked. It was so good I almost ordered a second one! I sampled a few chicken wings, but I mainly focused on my pita and hummus plate--and I'm glad I did! Having spent time in the Middle East, I know what freshly made hummus tastes like, and this did not disappoint. It was served with carrots, Greek black olives, tomatoes, cucumbers, and a drizzle of Greek olive oil seasoned with pepper. The pepper-infused olive oil added a whole new depth of flavor--something I'd never had before. After one bite, my wife and a few of her coworkers instantly regretted not ordering it themselves. Being the generous guy I am, I shared a little... but not too much! The prices were reasonable, and the quality matched what you'd expect from a great Greek restaurant. We couldn't find one and decided to dine in to use their facilities. I think we were among the first diners and realized that the restaurant was really nice and had such a wonderful view of the water. Our server was incredibly kind and hospitality. She informed us that the soup of the day was clam chowda to which both of us wanted right away. The chowda was flavorful and had a good amount of clams (many other restaurants choose to load it with potatoes, but not this one!). The soup does lean more brothy versus gravy-like which is a personal preference but taste wise it was still soothing. The menu had a lot of really great seafood options so I decided to try their Maine mussels. Our waitress said that the broth was really wonderful and would pair nicely with garlic bread which I also ordered. The entrees came out pretty quickly and the serving size of my mussels was double what I thought it would be. The mussels looked massive and the meat was as fresh mussels should taste. It was an excellent dish. The garlic bread would be a great vessel to soak up the mussel broth, but I felt that the bread was a little thin and slightly over-toasted to really soak up the broth. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the overall experience and it does feel like a local spot.
