Great little hole in the wall! I read about Mazzat a while ago and finally made my way there. This tiny Middle Eastern eatery is a hidden gem located in Portland's busy Forest Ave neighborhood. My falafel wrap may be one of the best meals I've gotten in Portland, solely based on food-to-price ratio. The falafel was perfectly cooked, and the wrap was quite yummy. It came with these deep-fried "chips" (I'm sure they are something else) and a side of delicious hummus. I paid about $10 for the whole thing, including a soda. You just can't beat that. The menu was extensive and included a mix of sandwiches, salads, and plates. Would I go back to Mazzat? If I'm in the area, yes, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to make it there! In my opinion, this is more of a takeout spot. I did dine in, but the vibe is pretty much nonexistent -- a mix of about eight tables inside without much going on. A hidden gem, I'd had cookies around the corner before and hadn't realized this was here. My husband brought home takeout items to snack on once and we realized we needed to make a point to come back and give it a proper try. Service was very polite and patient, and the food was awesome. They've got two vertical spits going for shawarma. The kebabs are displayed in the fridge and then cooked, so flavorful and interesting. There are several tables to sit and dine in if that's your vibe. It was torture driving home with the delicious smells. Don't skip eating the pickled veggies, they're unique and delicious! The portions pack a punch for the price. Next time I'll dine in and enjoy everything hot and fresh without the wait. The desserts also looked really good, next time! read more

I gave this restaurant 5 many times. Unfortunately the owner changed two months ago and I tried it tonight. We were party of 3. Bathroom soap dispenser is broken, another open bottle next to it laying on the side filled with little water but works. No tissue/ napkins on the table, I had to get another box from another table. My meal came first and the other two more than 10 minutes later, the food was okay, the hospitality not so much. I went to talk to the person that waited on us we a nice friendly tone, that meals needs to be served together maybe a minute in between as I was eating and the other guys were watching me. It took longer than we thought. However he responded WHATEVER! Definitely! Not going back again. Hope others will have a better experience. read more

Must have new owners and new chef as food and personnel different the last few weeks. The falafel, chicken shawarma, rice, hummus, and baklava are all now inedible. When we had bad food (and obviously different recipes) once we thought maybe it was a fluke but now has been consistently terrible for a few weeks. So, unfortunately, we will not be back (which is a bummer, we used to have once a week!). read more

Yelp led me astray here, I'm disappointed to say! I stopped in to pick up dinner to bring to Pride's Corner Drive In. Here's what I had: Beef shawarma sandwich - no spits in sight, and the beef was quite dry yet the sandwich was dripping with grease... it soaked through multiple napkins and the paper bag and still made a mess! Shish & Kebab combo - quite disappointing. Most of the meat was very dried out, and the lamb kebabs were pretty much inedible with gristle and dryness. The main flavor profile was salt. The chicken was pretty good, but overall this dish was only half eaten. Hummus and tatziki were pretty good. Dolmas - from a can and not worth $5! They were very nice and gave us some free soup samples, I believe lentil. The flavor was 90% chicken bouillon. Overall, I would say Jaffa at the mall (I know, surprising) is the best middle eastern food we have in the area, by far. read more

There's not much out here on Morrill's Corner but this mid-east joint is worth the trip. Delicious, friendly, clean and good prices. For $18 I got saffron rice with tender large lamb chunks, tzatziki, baba, hot sauce, roasted tomato/pepper, salad, dolmades and a bite sized baklava. There were also fried or baked pita chips, which I didn't care for, and would have preferred plain pita or lavash. He handed out samples of their famous lentil soup which was fantastic. I am climbing out of my yelp solitude to write a review for this place because it was that darn good. My partner and I were looking to grab something before going for a walk among the dead and the ducks (iykyk). We looked for places near by and this popped up on our search. We both ordered the chicken saj sandwich. We sat down and were offered a small sample of a soup - literally no idea what it was, but it was yellow, warming and delicious. The chicken saj was love at first bite. Perfectly spicy, a great pickle, tender meat, saucy and delicious. So happy to have gone there and it will now be in our heavy rotation. Dined in once about a year ago. I got the chicken shawarma on pita, which I remember was pretty basic and dry. The best part of the meal was their fresh hummus and pita chips, which were amazing. I gave this place another try with a gyro on pita to-go. Again, very basic. The menu says it should include hummus, which was no where to be found. Just some wilted romaine and tomatoes. Unfortunately, will probably end up at Jaffa's if I want a good gyro wrap in the future. read more

I was absolutely blown away with the quality and taste of food. We are visiting from Mississippi and my son said he wants to eat at a Mediterranean style restaurant and googled it. I'm not gonna lie when we got there I was worried. Very small only 3 tables and kind of a side street. Was I completely wrong. YES!!!!! Wow! Amazing! I've been in Portland for 4 years and FINALLY a place to get REAL shawarma. Not only is the beef shawarma fantastic...it is by far some of the best Shawarma i have ever had only to be outdone by a roadsie stand in Carmel Haifa! Also a word about the Baba Ganoush....i grew up eating...mom made it all the time. Mom's is the best but the Baba Ganoush here is the best i have ever had from any other place ever. Period. Generous portions, professional and kind service and big smiles all around make this one of my absolute favorite places to eat anywhere. Stopped by Mazzat for takeout on my way home from swim class. Ordered the chicken shawarma on samoon bread on the phone. It was ready and wrapped when I got there 10 minutes later, as I was paying I looked around and could see several intriguing looking spreads and desserts for sale in the cooler. Once I got home, the sandwich was big and filled with lots of chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles and a very delicious garlic sauce At first, I thought that it was so big, I would save half for lunch the next day, but that plan didn't work out as I ended up eating the whole thing. This is the best Middle Eastern food we have had anywhere in Maine. They really know how to use spices to enrich the flavor of their food. First, the Lentil Soup is excellent! We have never seen it on the menu, but they always have some available and it is different from any other lentil dish we have had. Ask for a taste! The sandwiches have plenty of meat and they have lots of sauces that you can add to your sandwich. Their falafels are moist inside and crispy outside and wonderfully flavorful, the best! They also have dips like baba ghanoush and muhammara that are excellent. The baba ghanoush has this smoky flavor I have never had anywhere else that makes it amazing. And most important the owner and staff are wonderful people who welcome you and make you feel important. read more

Last night I had the Lamb shank dinner and it was delicious! Very tender, tasty lamb (a generous amount), yummy basmati rice with some veggies and nuts to add interest and crunch, very good tzatziki, as well as a side of pickles and a small salad with lettuce and tomatoes. Food was amazing! We had ordered the following: gyro, beef saj, sambusa (cheese & parsley; and beef). The service was wonderful and the food so fresh! So delicious. We were pleasantly surprised when we were given a small bit of their lentil soup! Perfect flavoring with a enough amount of ginger, garlic and a touch of something else that soothed my sinuses and actually made my unnoticed scratchy throat instantly go away! It was not spicy but it was flavorful and trust when I say it was not spicy as I have 0 tolerance as black pepper causing me to break out with a light sweat and rosy cheeks... yes really! I love middle eastern food and this place is authentic! I ordered a beef shawarma sandwich. Instead of flat bread, I had their in-house samoon bread! Tasty, fresh and a perfect compliment to the veggies and beef. The owner gave me a small roll with a soft cheese in the middle,and a sweet liquid in a cup. I don't know what it is called but I'm hooked! I also bought a sampler of desserts: Dihina - wheat and coconut mixed with butter, cardamom, vanilla, date syrup! Burma- a few layers of very thin phyllo dough stuffed with cashews, nuts and then fried! Fingers - thick and crunchy strings of dough twisted around chopped pistachios and fried ! I have had both the chicken and beef shawarma , both were excellent, so flavorful, wrapped in delicious semi crispy flatbread. These are the real deal I will have to alternate orders in the future as I could not choose which one I liked best. We also had the falafel balls, those also were so so good; different , crunchy on the outside, uniquely soft and flavorful on the inside, yum! Some of the best I have had.
