Upstairs Italian restaurant located in shopping center in Akumal. Elda (owner) seated us right away, we ordered the avocado fries- a must try in my opinion! Tonight we split the Salamino pizza. Few nights before I had the risotto, it is superb, the gelato is homemade by an older Italian couple that lives in a town not too far. Ate here twice on our stay. The zucchini shrimp pasta and seafood pasta are both fantastic, and their homemade gnocchi is very tender. The vibe is great, servers very friendly, and great live music! The creme brûlée and chocolate cake are MUSTS, so so good. Only thing I didn't love was the seafood risotto, it was lacking flavor and the rice was more al dente than I prefer, so I'd stick with pasta. Fyi you can ask them to stamp your parking ticket for half off. read more

We had a wonderful meal here with great service. The restaurant has a wonderful open air location. We started our meal with the avocado fries. They were creamy and perfectly battered with a garlic sauce to dip. I ordered the grilled mahi-mahi and my wife the seafood risotto. My fish was delicious along with puréed cauliflower. Absolutely loved our experience! My first time back to Akumal in 22 years. Great addition to the local food scene. I had an amazing pineapple mezcal cocktail made with pineapple marmalade. Truly unique and delicious. We had the mixed seafood appetizer with shrimp and calamari...also a great take on a calamari appetizer. Lastly...perhaps the best meal I've had in years...the Fettuccini Frutti de Mare with (and I splurged here) a small lobster on top. I took me an hour to eat this feast and I enjoyed every bite! My wife had the whole fried fish with todays catch was a hog fish. Lastly our server was Laura who was sweet and kind as they come. Her service was impecable. Would like to write my best review for this place. Had two meals here while staying near Akumal - both were simply fabulous. Everything on the menu could be served in a good Italian restaurant the world over; with a slightly 'Spanish' touch - (although admittedly that might just be the atmosphere...). Focaccia is unique, hope you like it, I did. Bruschetta was great (do get the fresh park on top), and the avocado fries are really interesting. (If you are a avocado fan they are a must try .). After appy's - try the ravioli, chicken parm, lasagna or gnocchi. All amazing. They also have some very great signature cocktails, quite unique a few of them. Spicy mezcal? A truly interesting mix. Restaurant itself is 'upscale casual', meaning most folks have just come off the beach after a hot day, quick change into something comfortable and take the short walk over from their condos. Staff is casual as well, but everyone was great at their jobs, particularly the chefs, to say the least. Best part - the vibes. 5 stars all the way for this place!!! The minute we walked in we knew we had made a great choice. The wood fire grill just smells amazing and you know your food is going to have good flavor. We ordered the focaccia bread which was more like a cheese pizza - we were picturing square thick style but it was still really tasty with rosemary and garlic. We also ordered the fried avocado as a starter which is good but nothing to go out of your way for. Two of us split the seafood platter - if you enjoy fish, this is the way to go. Everything was made in the wood fire and had great flavor. Lobster, calamari, grilled whole fish (snapper). We got the lobster ravioli which was stuffed full of meat and worth it for that alone. We were expecting a creamy sauce but it was more of a vegetable sauce which was just as flavorful. We also got the pizza with prosciutto, arugula, and cheese on it. I've been to Italy multiple times and his pizza brought me right back. YUM! They also had balsamic and a sweeter chili olive oil for me to drizzle on. Everything about this wood fire pizza was delicious. Back to the drinks - some of the best margaritas we have had on our visit to akumal. The hibiscus mezcal margarita is one I recommend. The service is second to none, they are all happy and will take you to see their proud grill they use. We were served complimentary limoncello after our meal which is so Italian it made us love it even more. Don't pass this place up when in akumal! read more

My family went to Akumal for a one week vacation along with our friends. There were 9 of us total and we ate at Taverna twice for dinner in that one week period because our experience and our food was outstanding. We had fried avocados, truffle fries and bruschetta for appetizers. We ordered the daily specials, lobster tails, pizzas, pastas, chicken Parmesan, delicious cocktails as well as crème brûlée and chocolate lava cake. Everything was delicious and for both our visits our server was outstanding. This restaurant is not only tasty but the atmosphere is a lot of fun as well. We ate dinner here one night during our week in Akumal and also picked up pizzas one night. Our dinner at the restaurant was delicious. The focaccia appetizer was a large portion, fresh and hot, with rosemary and Parmesan. The frito misto was also a great starter, lightly fried veggies, shrimp, and calamari; a smaller portion, but we loved it. We shared a small lobster and risotto, which were both good. The risotto was definitely the star. Service was great, everyone was professional and friendly. The night we ordered pizza, we had gotten in late and didn't want to go out, and weren't able to reach the place next door for takeout pizza. Taverna was open, friendly, and helpful, but unfortunately, the pizza wasn't great. I'd suggest sticking to in person dining here if possible. read more

Taverna is another fun place to go if you are visiting Akumal MX. Its an easy walk if you are staying in the Half Moon Bay area. I would recommend sitting at the bar area vs the upstairs dining area. The dinning area is good for dinner parties, but the bar is good to catch a game ( such as watching Clemson STOMP Notre Dame) or enjoy the live music they have most nights after 7:30 PM. The kitchen is ran by a chef, so the food is extremely good, especially for the price point. I recommend the Taverna Focaccia. It was really nice and light after a day on the beach. Service was exemplary, the waiter was very friendly, however, I have found the service at all the restaurants and stores to be consistently fantastic. You can tell the culture in the area is very service focused. I have been telling everyone in my MX reviews to pay in Peso's not USD. read more

Tonight was our second time at Taverna in the last 7 days on vacation in Akumal. The service both times was 5 star. But tonight, our server Julio went above and beyond. Upon our arrival the manager recognized me from a few nights before, and we told her that we loved it so much that we wanted to spend our last night together enjoying a meal with them once again. She made us feel so welcomed. At the end of our amazing meal (the fresh lobster is to die for), we ordered some gelato. Julio told us that he wanted to give us a going away gift. He brought us out some limoncello, then brought a dessert from the manager. Both on the house. A small but kind gesture that warmed our hearts. We had an excellent meal at Taverna tonight! Our server, Arturo, was kind, friendly, and helpful. The food was delicious. I had the Akumal pizza (mango, chorizo) and my husband had the roasted chicken. We also tried the chef's focaccia to start. The Tequila Mockingbird was refreshing, I only wish it had been a little spicier. The ambiance is really nice as well. We sat upstairs which was lovely. Lots of fans were going and there was a nice ocean breeze. I loved all of the colorful lanterns hanging around the property as well.
