Disappointing. La Lunita has gone up and down over the years, and maybe this is a down time, or maybe I just pick the wrong dishes, because I want something local and fresh. Food: I love hogfish, and it's local... so I ordered that from the menu, but asked for it without the sauce (that would cover up the flavor), just lemon. That fish had been fried earlier in the day, it was cold, dry, even the lemon didn't pick it up. Maybe that's why they serve it with sauce! Service, even though the tables emptied out, it took a long time to be served (we got there about 7, didn't get a plate, or even a piece of bread, until 8:15). Ambiance. We love this little spot in Half Moon Bay. We heard it gets busy so we made a reservation. They did not have our reservation written in their book even though they confirmed it via email, but we got there early enough and it wasn't a problem. It is one of those put your feet in the sand type of place. It's the best feeling. You get to watch the gentle waves rolling and every once in a while see a little turtle head pop up in the water. The food was delicious! We had a tuna appetizer that is one of the best things I've ever eaten. The almond sauce is incredible! The paella, and the coconut shrimp are both delicious. And we loved the cocktails. Can't wait to go back! read more

We loved every part of this dinner for our extended family of 11. From the atmosphere to the service and the food everything was literally perfect. Our waitress was perfect in every way and I have a gluten allergy so at one point the chef came out and helped me with what I could order. It was one of our favorite meals of our whole trip. Highly recommend coming here if you are in the area and making a reservation if you can as the restaurant is small. read more

We had dinner here on a cool windy January evening. They have tables both inside and outside on the beach. We opted for inside by the bar. We were surprised they had sushi which we ended up with a roll that was very good. The table got seafood risotto which was loaded with shrimp, mussels, and clams. Another had the tuna steak that was cooked perfectly. My wife and I split the shrimp pasta. Nice creamy sauce with a lot shrimp. Nice wine section by the glass. Service was good. Alright, so this is a pricey place for Mexico, but the food is at fine dining quality! It is right on the ocean with surreal views and ambiance for a romantic meal or meal with the family! We have eaten at La Lunita several times over the last 5 years, and while we love the restaurant, food and simple oceanside ambience, we weren't happy with the pricing this last visit. We used to feel that we got incredible value at La Lunita, but at this point the prices are so high that we're beginning to feel underwhelmed by it. Hidden gem right on the beach in half moon bay. Done pass it up! The drinks are delicious and refreshing from sangria, margaritas, to cold beer. The mezcal is one of my favorites! The guacamole is so fresh you can actually just eat it with your fork and it makes you want to lick the bowl. We also have had the sushi roll which may have been some of the best sushi I have ever had. We ordered the coconut shrimp which is island flavorful as well. Chips, pico, and chili hot sauce served with every meal. The chili Oil is very hot if take in large portions so proceed with caution! Wrap up your happy hour with a cappuccino to carry you on your way for the day. Staff is so friendly and there when you need them. They even offer you more ice cubes when your drink has melted down. We are dinner here one night as well - a little pricey, takes awhile to get your food but flavorful! Sand floors, sunshine, and the beach - what more do you need?! Don't miss this spot! read more

This is a nice option for a romantic dinner. Sitting in the sand with the sound of the waves next to you is amazing. The plates are on the more expensive side for the area. When we were here a few years ago they had more traditional Mexican plates, and I was specifically returning for an item they have since removed from their menu, camarones a la diabla. I ordered their filet of fish instead. When I'm in Mexico, this is a dish that I like with rice & beans and some house made hot sauce. La Lunita is trying to cater to more American tastes, so now it is served with a side of grilled veggies and some other sliced veggies. This is where the wheels fell off the plate - the fish was good but the grilled veggies had so much oil on them that they were inedible to me. The sliced carrots were just raw with something else I couldn't identify. My wife had the fish tacos and they were very good. The breading was very light and the fish tasted fresh. I give La Lunita 4 stars for ambiance and good service. Depending on what you are looking for, their food is good, but I personally prefer more traditional Mexican dishes, not someone trying to imitate what they think I want from back home. While I did enjoy the meal, I won't be back, there are too many other places that are just simply better in the area. read more

Starting with the positive it is a beautiful setting with the two internal dining areas both which are open to the open air patio. But that is where the good ends. The service was horrible - simply bad. Slow and replete with sour attitudes. And the food was fine but fine isn't complimentary. Favors were fine but not impressive at all. This was the first restaurant we tried in Akumal. We arrived late and they were very helpful. We had margaritas, the ceviche, the shrimp plate and our kids had the spaghetti. It was all decent but for the price it wasn't amazing. The service was great and the ambiance was good - we wanted more authentic music but they played mostly American even after commenting on it. The setting is a dream. The chef seemed super friendly. But for the price, the food did not deliver. My dish if local pork grown in their farm was highly recommended but all fat, I only got a thin sliver of meat. And they forgot the mushrooms grown in their farm! So it was basically fat and potatoes. My family got halibit tacos, which were sweet for some reason. The lobster tacos were good. At the middle of the meal, they approached us saying their wifi was down and they needed cash. We thoroughly enjoyed our romantic candlelight evening meal Friday night on the beach at La Lunita. It's been a few years since we last visited - but thankfully La Lunita has retained all the magic, charm and yumminess. The tuna tostada appetizer was a perfect start. Tamarind margarita aperitif was superb and refreshing as well. Paella was well seasoned and delicious. Also enjoyed the "Mayan Beef" dish - which is basically a stewed beef prepared by adding ingredients (red beets too) to a clay pot and burying it in a fire pit underground. We went to La Lunita 2 times during our 5 day retreat and it was not nearly as fun as the place down the street but, we tried it because it seemed more upscale (it is). The first night we were there we had a few appetizers to share - the tuna tostada was really good but the ceviche wasn't what we had hoped it would be. The second time we went we ordered sushi. We really didn't care for it at all and didn't eat any of it and the server didn't even notice. We also ordered some curry soup bit ended ip pouring it over rice because it seemed more like a sauce. La Lunita, or The Little Moon...What a gem! While touring some other sites, our driver recommended this Hidden Treasure of a restaurant. We are so glad he did! There were 8 of us in our group, and they handled us perfectly. All of us felt this was a fantastic experience; and, we are a diverse and picky bunch. Located at the Hacienda de la Tortuga in Akumal, this sea side, beach front, restaurant is quaint and grand in harmony. Seating is certainly on the smaller side, but you don't feel cramped or restricted. And the service and food quality are both grand in performance. For Starters: The Peruvian Ceviche with a Mix of Sea Bass and Shrimp was a crowd favorite! Served fresh and cool, it topped the home made tortilla chips very well. If you like it a bit spicy, just drop some of the Grilled Habanero Pepper Oil on a bite, and let your mouth sing! The Yucatan Ceviche with the yam and jicama was a sweet alternate to the more full-flavored Peruvian. Also with the Mixed Fish & Shrimp, this dish did not last long. Cool, sweet, mild, and plentiful. You cant go wrong! NOT your commercial USA Coconut Shrimp. While I do like most Coconut Shrimp I have at a typical USA restaurant, it seems pretty clear that 99% of the places get the same frozen supply, and they just have to "not screw it up". NOT THIS PLACE. This is real, fresh, and tasty Coconut Shrimp. Served with both a Mango Chutney and Caramelized Vegetables, adding both to a bite of this Shrimp creates a unique flavor combination that was delightful. Enough so, that one of our group ordered one for themselves as a meal. Guacamole - We aren't sure what they did to their Guacamole, but DON'T CHANGE IT!!! It's tough to rant about guac, but some places try to make it special and they just ruin it. This is a great example of getting a simple dish right, and then just leaving it alone. The simplicity and the perfect balance is what makes this work. Just leave it and enjoy! Mains: Toping the list from our group is the Grilled Salmon In Orange and Coconut Sauce. The Salmon was grilled to perfection. The cut was thick and tender, and the meat flaked off like it should. The Sauce was amazing. It paired with the Salmon beautifully. The sides were seasoned well, cooked well, and complimented the Salmon as they should. Next up...the Fish Tempura And Spicy Pickle Mayo Fantastic Tacos. Three VERY full, very fresh, and very tasty double corn tortillas that will satisfy nearly any appetite. These are not your typical skimpy meat fish tacos. These are full of real meat, topped with a fantastic slaw of flavor, and served hot and ready. A close 3rd would be the Catch of The Day With Garlic. Fresh fish, cooked and served exactly as it should, and served on a bed of Creamy Rice With Shrimp. Do NOT forget to add some of the grilled spring onions to some bites...it really added another depth to an already pleasurable dish. A personal taste runner up was the Duck Magret With Chimole Negro Sauce. Those of us that like Duck ranked this one higher, those that don't ranked it lower. The two that tried it for the first time, both LOVED it. The Pear Confit and Roasted Almond combination brought a delightful flavor to a fairly gamey meat. Well done! The only "really good" response came from the Stuffed Jumbo Shrimp With Crab Meat order. In all fairness, this is from someone that is NOT a seafood lover. So for him, this is really high praise, but staying true to my review standards, I marked this one lower than the others. Even with this consideration, I would get these for myself with great pleasure. Lobster anyone? For those that do, the Fresh Caribbean Lobster Tail was a hit. While this is not my favorite food, the two that did get it were very happy with it. Both agreed it was as good as Lobster can get (Outside of Main, was one persons qualifier). Service: The service was friendly and basically done with the proper timing expectations. I would say the service was average. Not bad, but not notable either. Great choice in Akumal!!! read more

We have been coming to La Lunita for years. It has always been one of our favorite special occasion restaurants. Tonight was a total disaster and will not return. The food was sub par: lobster tacos were tough, T - bone (off menu special) was thin and tough , like a Salisbury steak. A customer allowed his children to crawl around under our chairs Later the child was crying and having a tantrum. The parents did nothing. I brought this to the attention of the restaurant and they did nothing. When approaching the family the dad later accosted me and yelled profanities at me while the restaurant staff watched. Although the staff later apologized, it was too late. I felt unsafe and the food honestly was not worth the challenge. read more

Group of 4. Drinks came out fast. Ordered food and waited 50 minutes for it to show up. Never saw our server after he dumped off the food. We swear it was a busboy who got us another round of drinks. The food was COLD. Warm would have been acceptable. The only time we saw the server again is when he dumped off the check. HUGE disappointment when you drop $200 usd. The whole negative dining experience was 100% the servers fault. Can't believe I left him a tip. Talked to the manager. Obviously he apologized but it's hard to make up for an already destroyed dining experience. I went to try this place based on good reviews, but based on my experience I would not go back. It was my last night in Akumal, Mexico and wanted to have a special dinner with my daughter so I decided to give this "fancier" place a try. When we first arrived I asked for a table by the beach, I was informed they were all reserved. I should have just left then and there but I still wanted to experience this place, I took a table inside and began with our drink order and appetizers. Our appetizer and drink order came to the table relatively fast so I quickly forgot about not being able to sit outside and figured it will still be a good experience. After that it all went down hill, the waiter took 15-20 mins to come ask if we needed another drink order while we just a sat there with an empty drink no water no nothing, just empty drinks I did finally flag him down and said, I know you're super busy but can I get another drink. The second drink came out and I put in my daughters dinner order. After the 2nd drink and food order and we soon forgotten again and the appetizer empty platters we never cleared. By the third drink I was irritated so I got up to the bar asked bartender to make my 3rd drink to go, ordered my daughter a water and asked for my tab at the bar. I paid my tab/left a tip (bc I still received service and there might be tip share) Terrible service, un attentive, and preference to regular customers. 1st and last night! Its a small restaurant where you can dig your toes into the sand as you listen to the water or the breeze pass through the palapas. I find myself eating here at least two times a week and if i feel like treating myself -i come here during the daytime to drink a glass of wine and read a book. Since i eat here as often as I do, i have been fortunate enough to eat pretty much everything on the menu and believe me when i say you can't go wrong. I really wanted to write a stellar review of this spot. I was expecting so much more than we experienced. We have been eating the most amazing delicious, creative, fresh food while here in Akumal/Tulum. Most restaurants, whether they are a road side taco stand or a hotel bar in a 5 star resort have one thing in common - happy people working. Everything takes longer, this is Mexico, settle in and enjoy the views, the smells, the conversation. I'm all over that - this place wants to be a step above. Cloth napkins, fancy glassware, utensils that all match - yes, all the bells and whistles. Problem - not enough people taking care of the tables. We had to flag down our server at least twice for more drinks, hot sauce, etc. Plates from appetizers were not removed before entrees were brought (I hate that) and the prices for this joint are more than you'll pay anywhere else nearby. It's still less than prices in the states, and the food was prepared and presented in a way you won't find other places. When I ordered a glass of wine, it was brought to the table in a small carafe and poured at the table - where some of it was spilled. I patiently waited for the server to return with a cloth to clean the table, that never happened. First place I've been in Mexico where drinks served were "measured".... On to the flavor....for the fabulous descriptions and the anticipated yumminess, I was disappointed. Flavors were toned down for the average English speaking tourist. I had the camarones with tamarind sauce, the tamarind flavor was really good, but, the prawns were left in the shells, so, it was pretty messy trying to eat it. I get it - its fresh! But, having a sticky pile of tails and heads piling over the plate smothering my salad was a bit unappetizing. My BF had the rib eye steak. He mostly wasn't impressed, the beef here isn't aged to the extent we like. For a $18 entree of steak, that's significantly less than we'd pay in Seattle, but, it didn't compare flavor wise at all. It's nice to sit there with the sand in your feet in the moonlight, but, I'm not sure I'll give this place another try or not. One more thing...or two! The restrooms were so messy, trash cans overflowing. I held it until I got home. If you want a 5 star delicious dining experience, go to Lo-Ha....soooo much better it's crazy. read more

After surviving Akumal's treacherous roads you find nirvana. Where you can be anyone you want to be. You're now in a different world. La Luneta wreaks of class, but drenched in a laid back atmosphere. When I walked in and say the beautiful woman with the Martini in hand the theme to James Bond played over and over in my head. Dat-ya-da-da, Da-da-da, Dat ya-da-da. Then you immediately see the view and you're in love. So yes crazy ambiance. Service, well like the Martini grasping woman (who turned out to be the owner, I think) all class. I sat out side, toes in the sand. My waiter was spot on, some of the best recommendations and he recommended the Caribbean lobster. It was cooked to perfection, light, tender, succulent. Plated with grilled vegetables and rice. Everything was a mouthful of deliciousness. One of the best Caribbean lobsters I ever had. Yes, the most creative came last, avocado ice cream, it was out of this world.
