This is one of the top 3 places to eat in the Akumal Pueblo. The local food here is fresh, tasty and cheap. We had the ceviche which was good I would say 7.5/10. We prefer the place up the street for ceviche but this one was still very good. The bacon wrapped burrito with braised lamb and Oaxaca cheese was amazing and very filling. Very tender and perfectly seasoned. You can beat the price either. It's BYOB like most places in the area so plan ahead. Run literally by a mom and a pop who are very friendly. The people were great and so is Sophia the dog. We got the shrimp garlic tacos, choriza quesadilla, lamb tacos and flank steak. I really loved this place! Authentic, clean, friendly and absolutely amazing quality. The person next to me ordered the fish taco plate and I only heard and saw great things about it. I ordered a beef burrito and was very happy with it. The chips, salsa and queso were all amazing, which is usually hard to attain in my standards. I'd go again and I'll continue to recommend. This restaurant is a bit inland (just past the highway) but worth the trip if you want to get away from tourist prices. The vibe is authentic taqueria, all indoor but with one table close to the open entrance. There were two little dogs wandering around, very friendly. :) The fish of the day was grouper, and we ordered two preparations: garlic and fried. Both were great. The garlic was a little salty but was cooked very well. It tasted very fresh! It came with cooked veggies, rice and beans, all for 100 pesos. Traditional taqueria. Going into Akumal pueblo keep going straight. When you see the police station on the left (~ 2 blocks) turn right. It will be on the next street (north east corner). Pretty simple to find. Though the staff spoke no English we were able to communicate adequately to get the order we wanted. The girl who was serving us was very friendly and smiled at us. She checked back in on us several times to make sure we had everything we needed. When the meal was over I patted my belly to indicate I was full while saying muy bien & the older lady clearing our table smiled & laughed. We ordered.... Guacamole - very good. Came with chips They put a mild and spicy salsa on the table for your meal. Fish tacos - 3 tacos came fried but overheard (an English tour group that came in) that you could order without the breading too. I did not eat them as I am vegetarian (vegan when not traveling) but my husband said they were good. They came with a mayonnaise & lettuce on them as well as rice & guacamole in the side. He would have liked to order them sans breading but we didn't know we could. Arrachera tacos - (yes my husband ordered two plates of tacos). He really enjoyed these. They came plain (3) with rice & guacamole on the side. The steak was very tender. He thought they were the best arrachera tacos he's had this trip. Vegetarian burrito - good. Came with several different veggies, beans, cheese & avocado. A side of roasted veggies was also included. They do not serve alcohol & we had a soda & water to drink. Our total bill was $306 pesos which is just under $25. It was a very good price for all the food we got. We will definitely be recommending a visit to my family who will be in town next month. There was a skinny town dog hanging outside. She knew she couldn't come in but just peeked in at us now & then. I wrapped up our scraps & took them outside to her. This is the fourth time I have been here! 2 times back in 2016 and 2 times this trip while in Akumal. It was good enough that I had to come back with my family this trip! All of the tacos are amazing. The best we have found in Akumal. I will for sure come back again when we travel back here from the United States. We were on our way to our AirBnB and this place came up as a good spot for our family of 8 to stop. Right away we loved the atmosphere- the family who owns the business was extremely hospitable. Because of another review we opted for 2 plates of carnitas to assemble our own tacos. The pork tacos recommendation was on was spot on! We loved them! There was so much food! This place is a trip back in a time machine - really - So once upon a time Cancun was too busy for normal folk, Playa was a decent sized town and Akumal was unheard of - before pirates of the Mayan Riviera took over and pimped the place out and filled the oceans with trash - There were quiet little taco shops - where the proud owner shared tasty little slices of heaven piled onto soft discs of corn. Where you sit on plastic lawn furniture and you cant get enough of insanely small pesky napkins to wipe your hands. This is it - this is a great authentic Mexican restaurant of 20 years ago - nestled on the true side of Akumal - We had pork tacos, an order of chicken tacos and a norteno (put the ~over the n please) taco. Not to mention quac, chips and water - The say their specialties are the pork and lamb - Not a lamb person - did not try the lamb - but the pork - wow - crazy good. Melt in your mouth. Use a lot of limon on them - the citrus sets them off - The green salsa was mild and had a great flavor, the red se pico. The norteno taco - steak/cheese/quac was wonderful - it is large think fat quesadilla - and a full sized lunch by itself. Wonderfully kind people - who take pride in their work. This is one of the main reasons why I fell in love with Mexico many years ago. Short bike ride into the pueblo from the Akumal beach area...great traditional taco joint. Inexpensive, tasty and filling. We had pork tacos, 2 each, and Sprites and paid about $4 American, total. The place isn't much to look at, but if you want the real thing, this is the place. read more
