One of my friends recently purchased a home in Playa del Carmen. After a lovely stay at Joia Paraíso, we extended our stay to hang with them at their condo & had dinner at Romeo. Romeo is a long-standing, family-owned eatery serving salads, pizzas & pastas in downtown Playa del Carmen. The eatery is on the south end of downtown Playa del Carmen on 4th St. between 10th & 15th Avenues. The restaurant with the palapa roof is a close walk to Quinta Avenida, a pedestrian-only street lined with restaurants, cafes, stores, a mall, boutique hotels, cultural experiences, & clubs. Patrons are encouraged to call ahead to make reservations, especially if you are ordering risotto for dinner, as the restaurant fills up for dinner (preparation is forty-five minutes). There is a surprisingly decent amount of seating, given the crowded street it is situated on. The eatery is warm & cozy, and there are indoor & covered seating options (note: the seating is real tight). The customer service is excellent, & the staff is conversant in English. We ordered: Tagliolini with Lobster Seafood Pasta Seafood Soup Contadina Salad Pepperoni Pizza We did not have a bad bite at Romeo's. I wanted to bottle up the spicy & rosemary-infused olive oils that came with the bread service. The tasty Contadina Salad (pears, Brie cheese) was lightly dressed and well-balanced, with sweet, peppery, crunchy, & savory notes. I am normally not a huge fan of seafood soup, but the broth was delicious & well developed. Both pasta sauces were amazing, & I found myself going back and forth between my (red pasta sauce) & my friend's (creamy white sauce). Romeo's is also generous with the amount of creamy lobster that comes with the pasta. My friend's grandson ate with us, & he said the food was better than McDonald's, high praise for a six-year-old.

Diego & Sol our servers were excellent! We made ressies for 12 people & our table was set when we got there. There are at least two seating areas, which was nice. They quickly took drink orders & got a bread basket full of focaccia, olive bread, etc. Olive oil & balsamic already on table. Yum! We ordered pizzas, pasta & beef. Was great food, , great service & epic experience!

Best find ever! One of the best restaurants ever! Who would expect some of the best Italian food in Mexico (and we've been to Italy)! We were searching online for a nearby restaurant and stumbled on Romeo. It's down an unknown side street and looks like a local restaurant - there are 2 spaces crammed with tables. Make reservations (even the night before) otherwise, it is a very long wait hours. All the food is fresh - fresh bread, fresh homemade pasta... Probably our favorite dish is the clam souté - while listed under soups, this is a meal. The clams are outstanding and not sandy, the sauce is so good that you'll all be fighting over the toasted bread to soak it up the sauce. Not one clam will be left. The caprese is a light fresh start - fresh mozzarella and basil paired with ripe tomatoes. We love the tagliolini scoglio and tagliatelle mushroom tris italian sausage and truffle - both are superb - cooked to perfection and in flavorful sauces. The salmon is lovely. Pizza is very good. Excellent wine. Service was impeccable. We knew we'd never find another restaurant as good so we reserved the next night. On our second night we made 2 big mistakes - over-ordering and not realizing that a lot of the other pastas are in very heavy (cream) sauces so we were totally unable to finish our food but we still enjoyed it immensely. We started with the caprese with burrata, clam souté and seafood soup. Clam souté was as great as the night before. The seafood soup is very good but the clam souté is better. The eggplant parmesan and lasagna are great but heavy dishes. The shrimp tagliatelle and strozzapreti chorizo are very good but in rich heavy cream sauces. The pulpo octopus a la plancha is outstanding. Save room for the chocolate volcano dessert. Our only compliant is the slightly overpriced water. After a full day of activities, we were particularly thirsty and ordered a lot of bottles because the biggest bottle they have Is 750ml. Six bottles at 105 pesos or $7 a bottle really adds up. In summary, make a reservation (can be done online), do not over-order as tempting as it, relax and enjoy the unbelievable food and friendly service. You won't want to wait until your next visit.

Everything was super tasty! Treat yourself to frito mixto! Pizza dough was even better than my fiancé's. I'll leave it there....

Went to Romeo for the first time last night for our friends' 25th Anniversary and was thoroughly impressed. To be honest, we don't usually like to go to Italian places for anything but pizza because they typically disappoint, but Romeo is definitely worth it. I decided to order my typical favorite, eggplant parmigiana, and it was fantastic! Not too breaded with enough garlic (something I find lacking at most places) and perfectly cooked eggplant. Everyone with us loved their dishes as well, and service was great. I can definitely see why it's a favorite of locals.

When in playa del Carmen.. Romeo pizza is really good BUT... reservations are a must specially weekends pizza is wood fire so it does take a min to get but worth it they also sell beer and alcohol and a great menu selection

My friends and I have been to Italy, and yet this is the best Italian restaurant we've dined at. We made our way down the menu and it's hard to go wrong. However, our favorites were the homemade pasta dishes with truffle oil, with their pizza being a close second. The owner is from Milan, and Mexico is lucky to have him.

I absolutely loved this place!!!! I was here several times...3 times while I was in Playa...just because it was awesome! And after being in Mexico for 15 days, I realized it was really important that I eat something other than Mexican food! I walked there in the evening all three times and it was perfectly safe for me to walk about 10 blocks from my hotel to the restaurant...I even walked in the rain, the last day. It was so worth it! Because this is a late post, I will add all my pics but let me tell you...it was worth the trip...the walks, the rain...the food here was great! And if you have the chance to stop here, it will be worth it. The wait staff was great, the waiter I had spoke english, because I have very little spanish skills! And even though most of them weren't bilingual, there were a few that did speak english and it all worked out. The first night I went, I had the margherita pizza and it was amazing...the second and third time, I had the pear salad and the spinach raviolis....amazing!!!!! The restaurant is divided in two, kind of a strange set up, but it didn't affect the food quality at all....I can't say enough about it. I was in Playa del Carmen from 10/30-11/14...have a few reviews to add from my trip....sorry for the late post!

We had the best service and Italian food for our last night in Playa del Carmen. I recommend the calamari and the pizza. Their marinara sauce for the calamari was so good and the calamari is not overly fried. It's perfect. The hubby tried the Sangria and enjoyed it. I had their recommended Pinot Noir which went nice with my dish. Recommend making a reservation even though we just walked in.

I ordered the Strozapretti with white truffle cream sauce and sausage. I'm very close to giving 5 stars but there were a few points for improvements. The pasta was excellent: Chewy but still fully cooked through. It held the cream sauce well. The cream sauce was super smooth. It was a bit heavy on savor without any acidic balance, which made it tough to finish. The sauce also had a slight hint of that fake truffle taste. Not enough to ruin it. But it was lingering there. I also felt the dish would have been much better with a more generous amount of sausage. That said, this was a delicious plate of pasta.

    A great night at Romeo's. L

We come here every time we are in town. Great food and feel to the place without having to be trendy/cool to eat there. Lots of expats as regular customers speaks to the quality of the dining.

He delivered solid service, 5-Star. It rained during our meal so that did have an impact. As for the meal...it was a 3-Star at best. My appie was Bruschetta Pastorall ($147P). It was hot in flavour & decent tasting as well. My main was Chicken Parmesan with a creamy spaghetti ($379p + $75p for the spaghetti). They were good but not great. They SHOULD have been great for a $31.50 Cdn entree. And even though I asked in writing to have the meal extra hot...it was barely warm enough to NOT send back to the kitchen. This seems to be where most restaurants in the area drop the ball...taste & food temperature. Even though I ranked this a 4-star it's not really one...it's more like a 3.5. I doubt I'd come back here.

You feel like you are eating in a jungle. Most of the seating is outdoors but the jungle blocks views to and from the street. We went for thin crust pizza. The crust in fact very thin. I think my Mailina could have been in the oven a bit longer to brown more. I did not detect any sausage although the description said there should be. The wife got the Napoli and liked it. We started with Caprese salad. It was excellent. Best (most fresh tasting) I ever had. Service was inattentive. There was one guy who was waiter and street recruiter. It was too much for one person.

There is a hyped up "pitch man" standing outside encouraging people off the street to come in. He told me he could make a special that included a drink of "whatever I wanted" well since I was thinking of pizza anyway I decided to give it a try. I decided on a glass of Cabernet and even though it wasn't on the menu, a mixed salad. The waiter couldn't have been sweeter, he was very accommodating. I also asked for water and I noticed the waiter poured the water from a bottled water. I didn't question and assumed (u know the saying about a-ss-uming) that they just used bottled water since he didn't say anything. The mixed salad was simple but a nice size. I also ordered a margarita pizza. Well the pizza was just a cheese pizza with three pieces of basil. I asked for more basil and the waiter did bring a side of basil for me. This was really bad bland pizza! It reminded me of a frozen Digiorno and that was even being generous! When I received my bill...surprise! No special, it was only if you ordered 2 pizzas. Oh and also a tip was added on. I didn't mind the tip because honestly the waiter had nothing to do with the crappy food. I had heard that there was great pizza in Playa but this was NOT it! Not only was it my crappiest meal in Playa it was my most expensive!! Almost 30.00! And yep a-ss-uming, I was charged for the water. On my next visit to Playa, I will definitely avoid this place.

Chas found this spot while vacationing here and loved the area so much that he rented an apartment nearby and flys down often from New Orleans to stay there. We started with some Mezcalina's and fresh house fried tortillas with salsa's. The chipotle salsa and the avocado with cilantro were a nice change of pace from your normal salsa verde y rojo. The chips were clearly freshly fried and tasted great even without the salsa's. Our appetizers were a baked Camembert with fruit and tortillas, a sopa azteca, and fresh tuna tostadas. The Camembert was quite good as was the soup, but these tuna tostadas were one of the best appetizers I've ever eaten. Everything on them worked so well together and you could add a splash of soy sauce and it was even better! I'd order these as my meal at 90% of the spots in the world and leave happy! Our entrees were a grilled pichana as well as a lobster pizza from the wood fired oven. I love cooking pichana and don't see it often on menus when I go out so that was a nice treat. The temp was perfect for what we asked for and it was seasoned well. The potatoes that came with it had excellent flavor as well. I could take or leave the corn haha When Chas told me he was eating pizza in Mexico with lobster on it I said "dude, what are you doing with your life?" He said just wait til you try it. He ... was right. The lobster was delicious and buttery, the sauce had great flavor, and the cheese (which was not mozzarella) worked surprisingly well. I will say that I normally like my pizza crispy and this was missing that element...but the flavor more than made up for it. Add on to all of this the fact that you're surrounded by a beautiful pool, swings over the sand, a nice bar, and the owners dog is always nearby to say hi to haha. One of the easiest ones yet.
