We sat outside (by choice), it was comfortable and clean. We went a little early so it wasn't overly busy but they had a nice clientele. We both ordered calzones and salads. The salads were generous portions with a nice dressing and fresh lettuce and cheese and we're tasty. The calzones were good but I wouldn't say spectacular. They needed more filling meat, etc. but we're hot and tasty. We ordered water and we were brought bottled water. We witnessed other tables getting water out of a pitcher. Would've appreciated the option, but it wasn't offered. Had to ask for a plate for the oils to enjoy the bread and oils no salt or pepper for the oils with the bread. The bread was dry almost crumbly but that's how it is here in Mexico. The wine was good. The service was good. Had to ask for a ticket but again I think that's how it is here in Mexico. We walked in on a Saturday night. It was busy, but we got a table immediately. Bread basket served with olive oil and vinegar. It took a while to get our wine and water. Then a bus-boy took away our menus and our plates. OK. I guess we've had enough bread? We memorized our orders. The server came and we recited our orders. He noticed that the busboy removed our bread plates and got us another. The food arrived. It was delicious, but my steak was the wrong one. I told the server. He asked if I wanted it replaced. I said no, because it's delicious. There was a price difference between the 2 steaks. I didn't think they were actually going to charge me for the upgrade, but they did. The service is actually pretty nice here. The food is so so. We started off with the tuna carpaccio and it still had a bit of the fishy stink so we asked for lime to try and rid of the fishiness. We did enjoy the fact that it came with a piece pineapple so it can also help mask the fish taste. Can't forget the bread they give you at the beginning not toasted lol but still happy to have bread at an Italian place :). The way the pasta works here is you order your pasta for that price and then you order the sauce for another price. In essence one pasta dish would be about 200 pesos total. Casa suckia!!! Bring your de sheller tools with as you will get a mouth full of shell. You can ask for parmigiana four time and maybe you will get lucky. Ordered sea bass with capers and when it came to the table with 2 capers I said there are no capers and dude tried to point out tomato parts like an Italian would be convinced. It was my first time at Casa Sofia and I'd say it was a great experience. It was a beautiful night for a date night, it was breezy outside where we were sitting but perfect. The service was very quick and we were helped by multiple people. The food didn't take long to come out either. There was complimentary bread with oils at the table. I got the Mediterranean salmon, could have been cooked a little longer but still delicious. I got the sauce on the side because I don't like black olives. They were smaller portions, but the perfect size for me.The rose wine was good, a little more dryer than i would have liked. We had the most wonderful experience at Casa Sofia. Decided to eat here on a whim, and so glad that we did. As an Italian who is vegan, I couldn't have been more pleased! So difficult to find wonderful vegan options on an Italian menu, and Casa Sofia absolutely broke the stereotype with this. I actually had trouble deciding what to order there were so many choices! I return to Casa Sophia on a regular basis , whether in-person or by delivery and they never disappoint. In person their COVID protocol is diligent and their delivery is always beautifully wrapped and delivered piping hot. So many choices: soups, appetizers, pastas, pizza , enters and deserts. Tonight's delivery was flawless- minestrone soup, penne with fresh tomato and basil with shrimp, spaghetti carbonara, chocolate volcano and apple tart. I must admit that, despite my friend's enthusiastic recommendation, I entered rather skeptical as to how good an Italian restaurant in a touristy area of Mexico could be. I guess the 15 min wait for a table should have helped assuage my fears, but Casa Sofia was well worth that reasonable wait (and more), providing very good food at incredibly reasonable prices. The menu literally looks more like a book than a menu, with countless pasta options that you can get in various sauces. We shared a nice Caprese salad and a bruschetta appetizer to start, and then I had gnocchi in pesto sauce for dinner. I was quite impressed with how fresh and flavorful the tomato and mozzarella were in the apps, and how light and fluffy the pasta was, with a solid pesto. My friends had chicken and salmon dishes and were similarly impressed. The wine list is extensive and varied and... let's just say we made ample use of it, and were quite happy with our selections. It is a charming venue, offering indoor and outdoor seating and, while adjacent to major shopping districts, is just off of a side street enough to feel like a nice respite from the boisterous main drag of town. I expected at best to be grading on a curve, but I would have thought this was a solid Italian option even back in New York. In Playa, it felt like a star--a quality, adult option for a nice meal, at non tourist-gouging prices. read more

Very cozy ambience inside this restaurant. Our server was very attentive and friendly. The menu is huge! So many dishes to choose from. We ordered the melon and prosciutto appetizer. A very large portion; definitely good for sharing. It was delicious. Juicy and perfectly ripened melon. For dinner, we ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and lobster ravioli. Both very generous portions. The meatballs were so good, homemade from what we could tell. Same with the spaghetti, al dente & just right. The lobster ravioli was just okay. I didn't taste much lobster or much hint of seafood in the filling. We also ordered some cocktails that were very good. We took home some desserts (cheesecake and chocolate cake) that didn't disappoint. We really enjoyed our time at Casa Sofia and hope to visit one more time before leaving Playacar. Wow! What a perfect hidden gem in Playacar! We got a recommendation from a local we met at the condo we're staying at in playacar and wow, this place did not disappoint!! Just happened to be all you can eat pizza today, and man, was it delicious!!! Our gracious waiter, Eduardo aka Lalo was so kind and recommended the most delicious pizzas for us! We just got back from Italy last month, and Casa Sofia's Pizza was on par with Italy's Pizza! Make sure you come by and try this place! Not a great experience. First off, the waiter was missing in action. After he took our order, we did not see him until the presented us with the bill. They were out of a ravioli dish my son wanted and also out of a special drink he wanted as well. As for an appetizer, we got a mixed fry plate. It tasted like everything was cooked in old oil. Then, my drink was taken from me with some left and I wasn't offered another drink. Then the food arrived, we had two pizzas, they tasted ok. We had two pasta items, both tasted good. I had the bass with the potatoes and vegetables. The plate looked great, but they forgot how to season and cook the dish properly. There was no seasoning in the entire dish. The skin on the fish was soggy. The vegetables were under cooked. They had a raw vegetable taste. Not a great plate. Then it took so long for the waiter to come over with the bill, two of my kids fell asleep. Family of 6 went here twice. Prices are incredible. Pasta with seafood was excellent. Kids love the pizzas. 2 people can share a single pizza. Pizzas come out super quick. Brownie dessert was really good. The cheesecake was a let down. The Arrechera was not cooked enough. Rather disgusting. It may have been a translation issue when ordering. Only 2 real issues with this place: It takes forever to get the check. The waiter just disappears after the dinner is served. Food was subpar and we were promised a discount for the inconvenience. Check comes and there is no discount. They proceed to tell me they need my American ID to discount. I refused to give it and had to get a manager. Manager asked for ID also and finally, after 3 hours of terrible experience, we were given a measly $10 (usd) discount. Food was Inadequate. If you are sick of tacos this is the place to go :) They make all the pasta fresh which is AMAZING! i reccommend the truffle pasta it was insane, just like italy! the margarita pizza was also very good! the only reason i do not give it 5 stars was one pizza was a little charred, which i do not particularly love. i also did not loveeee the bolognese sauce, the flavor was just a little off for me but i am used to american style so may just be a personal issue. also would not recommend the lemonade it's just water with lemon, very very sour. read more

I've lived here for a few months and I wish I found this place earlier. Super good food, local prices.

We wanted something nearby as we'd been walking all day. This was a short walk and it seemed to have pretty good reviews. The ambiance is really pretty and classy. And well when I took a look at the menu I was a bit overwhelmed with how many choices. I went with the meat lasagna, not bad but it was not hot it was like warm, also barely had pasta in it was a very thin layer. Didn't finish it. Table bread was stale. Lobster ravioli was just ok as well. I will say the pizza was delicious definitely go with that. And tiramisu was good as well. Service was very attentive and nice. My mom ordered the bolognese sauce over linguini and it was so watery and absolutely terrible... the drinks are also not good very filled with ice and nearly Any Alcohol in it... the only good thing we ordered was pizza , everything else was not good. I was having high hopes for this place based on other reviews but the food again is just not well made.. if you visit this place please only order pizza nothing more. The Brushetta was not good the bread was as hard as a rock and the tomato wasn't very fresh at all. We basically paid for the bill and didn't eat more more then a spoonful of food... Love this place and we have had so many amazing meals and fun night here. We love the menu and the value is amazing. We have eaten at tons of different restaurants throughout Playa but always seem to come back here. It amazes me to see some neg reviews. I mean I understand things can happen time to time. We have had never had any problems and if it was something minor it was always corrected immediately. Just remember when you read a negative comment, sometimes people were having a bad day long before they get to the restaurant. Nothing like coming to Mexico for some Italian food! Traveling with an adventurous foodie husband and an overly-cautious father (along with 2 kids), I was hesitant to try something off the beaten path. Ok, not too far off...a block or two off the main touristy strip. 2 minute walk. We were seated immediately (it was early) and promptly greeted with our server. The menu is in Italian, Spanish and English. Our drinks came immediately "sin hielo", without ice, to appease mi papá. Complimentary bread with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, spicy oil, salt/pepper, and grated parmesan to dip in. The bread was delicious. Dad ordered a calzone, cheese and ham. He said it was delicious. High marks for the guarded man. This calzone was HUGE! Literally the size of this dinner plate. $8 Kids ordered pepperoni pizza. Daughter pouted that it said "salami" on the menu and wasn't convinced that it was the same until it came out. Again, huge pizza. I was worried that my teen son would eat the whole thing. There were leftovers after both ate. $7 I ordered pasta alfredo. It came with mushrooms, maybe I accidentally ordered. They were big and few enough to pick out. $5 Hubby ordered lobster ravioli with seafood sauce. Calamari, octopus, mussels, crab, shrimp. $10. He was in heaven. Split cheesecake at the end. Creamy, baked in the oven, topped with fruit sauce. All of it, plus 3 sodas and 4 beers = $40 USD. That's right. Forty American dollars! Fantastic find!! An incredible place only 3 minutes dr from 5th Av.The fresh pasta and the choices of sauces were incredible. It was so good that we decided to come back on a second night of our vacation for had a great pizza and Tuna steak cooked to perfection. The service was top notch. Good location away from the Playa Del Carmen mobs. Nice layout with lots of outdoor seating and inside A/C if you want it. Prices are very reasonable. Pizza is excellent, but we had the mushroom lasagna one night and it was amazing. We came back again and it was just OK. We are not sure what happened? Wow! The food here, Fantastic!! You start by picking your choice of pasta or gnocchi then pick a sauce and can add in meat if you choose. wonderful selection, good portions and is delicious! Great drinks too! Unfortunately when dining out, its not just about the food but the service as well. It took more than 20 minutes for someone to come and take our order.
