I can't see how anyone would describe Tato as a "hole in the wall"! The restaurant is a good size and it's airy and bright. The kitchen is fully open, so you can see the chef preparing all your food. I think there's an outdoor eating area in the back, too, but we ate inside since there was cross ventilation going through the whole place. Now the food... it was fresh and delicious! We each had a beverage; I had the blackberry lemonade and my dining companion had the hibuscus limeade ($4 each). Both were so refreshing and delicious! My companion had the pollo asado tacos ($13) and I had the carne asada tacos ($14) ; each was served with a small amount of rice and beans. There were 3 tacos on each plate, but we traded and each had one of the other's! Both the carne asada and the pollo asado was awesome and hit the spot; the tacos were "street" tacos with double corn tortillas. The carne asada tacos had guacamole, chopped onions, cheese, cilantro, and salsa verde while the pollo asado tacos had the chopped onions, cilantro, and the salsa verde. What pulled everything together was the lime that was included with each plate; it took each dish over the top! I'll definitely be back for more! read more

There is a great variety on the menu, so it's perfect for groups of friends with all different types of diets. I came on a weekday for lunch and was really impressed. The interior is sunny and hip. The aesthetic reminded me a bit of Liholiho Yacht Club, with the open tiled kitchen, and the hexagonal tiling of the floors and walls. I love the food overall. It's a hip take on Mexican food. I lover the quesadillas - big fan of the chicken tinga, and the mushroom quesadillas. Each one is enough for one meal without being too full. Upon entering Tato, you'll find yourself in a spacious, bright, and well-decorated establishment. Menus are randomly(?) situated in a bath tub. The ambience already excites you and it's an easy choice to sit in to eat. When I entered, it was taco tuesday!! That means $10 for 3 tacos, for San Francisco, this seems to be a deal. I order shrimp, carnitas, and carne asada tacos. When they finally arrived, the taco fillings are huge, this is easily proven because when picking one up the entire piece falls apart, now we have a salad. What's impressive is that they are quite consistent with all 3 meats. The filling is a very bland mixture that is diluted with a hefty spoonful of guacamole, so maybe if you don't care for spices or texture, you for sure have guac. Afterwards, I was curious to try more. So I ordered a shrimp burrito. Eating this burrito proved to be yet another difficult task, falling apart before any bite taken. The rice is undercooked and adds nothing to a plain burrito. What is Tato trying to accomplish here? It seems it's trying to be a point where people can come to meet and have a good time. With great decor and happy hour specials, I would not might meeting some friends here. If you were here trying to find a good meal; I advise you on passing. We are doing our best on a limited budget to support local businesses despite the pandemic. This was our first time to Tato. We rolled up around 4pm after donating some items to Building Resources. I went for the chopped salad with carnitas, and my kid ordered carne asada tacos. Goodness, gracious! IT WAS DELISH! And, the servings were ridiculously generous. Each of our entrees was about $14. My kid devoured his meal proclaiming that they were the best tacos he's had. He graciously let me have a taste of the beef, and it was so tender and juicy. Yummm. I loved my chopped salad--the poblano peppers, watermelon radish, and corn were such a tasty mix. I had to save half and am crossing my fingers that the dressed romaine lettuce will hold up til I can have the rest for breakfast tomorrow. Came here on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch. The interior and back are really well decorated and chill. Ordered the daily special for Tuesday which is a 3 taco filling of your choosing along with a side of rice and beans with a few chips. I choose to be adventurous and chose mushrooms, squash, and shrimp. Mushrooms were well juicy and seasoned generously. Squash had a great kick to it and reminded me of Thanksgiving yams with a kick; pine nuts sprinkled on top added a great nutty to the squash. Shrimp was also a solid choice, came with salsa verde for a bit of that limey zing. Would definitely come back again on another day for the drinks. read more

I loved how it was contact-free...you don't even need to get out of your car. Prepay over the phone and just pull up and they will load it into your car for you! The family style meals (burritos, enchiladas lasagna) are $50 and include salad/bread and generously feed 4. We ordered the italian sausage lasagna and it was super satisfying plus would feed more like 6 people. The noodles were perfectly al dente and the salad was gigantic and delicious. You can also add on a bottle of wine for only $10--the bottle we got was delicious and paired great with the lasagna! They are also offering $20 make-your-own-pizza kits which look amazing as well and we will definitely order as this quarantine continues. It was my first time trying out this new spot in my neighborhood. So far so good. Of all the dishes we tried, my favorite is the shrimp ceviche tostada followed by the butternut squash quesadilla. Don't come here expecting to pay typical inexpensive taqueria prices. While some may think it a little pricey for tacos or tostadas, the price is comparable considering most of the ingredients are locally sourced. The food was also not greasy but very flavorful. We went to Tato before a show at the Opera house. Considering most of the neighborhood looked like a ghost town, it was a welcomed bit of warmth. The food is absolutely delicious! Everything is fresh and good quality. The street corn equites and coconut shrimp tostada got us off to an excellent start. We followed them up with quesadillas, cheese for my mom and mushroom for me. You could tell they used good cheese. They were generously portioned and the toasted criminal in mine were delicious. I also tried a salmon taco. It was good, but I kind of wish I had tried a street dog instead. I love str=t dogs! The house escabeche that was served with everything was very good, particularly the cauliflower. They have cocktails. I was driving, so that wasn't an option, but it's something to note. We were both really happy with the house lemonade (hibiscus lime I think). Both vegetarians and omnivores alike can find something to enjoy. Bonus points for nice decor and very friendly service. Definitely recommend. A must try in Bayview. read more

The service was ok, probably deserving of 4 stars but the restaurant is a walk up order vs table service. Food was fun, our table shared the Chicken Thinga Quesadilla, and and assortment of tacos. The salads were fresh and we enjoyed the smoke trout on the salad and shredded stew chicken on the other. All delivered fast and hot. Delicious. Work not too far from this place. Was going to go to All Good Pizza but saw that they opened this new restaurant and decided to give it a try. Tato is a great addition to the neighborhood. The same person owns All Good Pizza, which is another great spot in the Bayview. Highly recommend the Padron peppers and quesadilla. They have a nice red wine (Zinfandel) available. The decor is cute and the food is delicious. You order at a counter and they bring the food to your table. read more

The store is open for regular hours now, and I've come back a couple more times and I must have tried everything on the menu by now. My favorites are the rainbow/carrot, Indian chickpea, the beef (both carnitas and al pastor) tacos, and the butternut squash quesadilla. I've waited a while (been going here since it opened because I live 4 blocks away, lucky me) before writing this. Tato has only gotten BETTER since it opened. Service is faster, the menu has expanded. Burritos have been added and my friend who is into burritos said it was "really delicious and fresh tasting". Also... the shisito peppers!!! Wth... these are SO GOOD!!!!!! Basically... Everything is good. So order what you like. If this food was in a fancier part of town or the mission it'd be way more expensive. It's really QUITE sophisticated in its menu and flavor profiles and ingredients, so prices are good. The margarita is one of those fresh lime-y really good margaritas that you could honestly drink a pint of. (Wish they were bigger !! Pls ! ). Love me a good margarita. Lots of other beer and cocktail options too. Decor is beautiful. Can't wait until it's open Monday's cuz I always find myself wanting to get food here after the Monday slog. This is a cute little Mexican restaurant. They had limited staff on the Sunday that we went (1 cashier, 2 cooks). This didn't affect the service too much but they did forget our tostada order (apparently because the machine that printed orders was broken). Once we reminded them, they quickly got the tostada to us. We ordered four tacos - carnitas (banh mi style), al pastor, indian chickpea, and roasted rainbow carrot (listed from favorite to least favorite). The carnitas were really tender and the carrot slaw + sriracha crema went really well with the meat. The al pastor was also very tender (this taco was the most like a traditional taco). The indian chickpea tasted like a light chickpea curry. It made the taco too soggy though. The roasted rainbow carrot was our least favorite because the vegetables were cold and more like pickled rather than roasted. The crispy quinoa was also very hard (it did provide an interesting textural contrast though). I guess I don't like crispy quinoa. Note that the tacos are all made with only 1 tortilla. We also got the mango coconut shrimp ceviche tostada. The toppings were all very good together - creamy but refreshing. We didn't know tostadas were deep fried/toasted tortillas (it was like a giant tortilla chip). It went well with the filling. Their house horchata is very light. You don't taste much cinnamon (if at all). It tastes just like pure rice milk. I felt like there was a lot of ice in the mason jar that it was served in so that we didn't get that much horchata but all in all, a good complement to our meal. 4 tacos + 1 tostada were filling enough for 2 people, and everything seemed fairly priced for the amount of food. I also like how they have a sink separate from the bathrooms. Eating tacos can get messy. :D read more
