I'm not sure why some places in the Mission get completely ignored by the hipsterati, but I never see this friendly hole-in-the-wall on anyone's must-try list. It's a pity really since the food is solid and probably more consistent than a lot of similar operations. The ones who have tried it appeared to like it, and I noticed the possibility of another menudo spot on the weekends. The menu is pretty standard, and I noticed tacos were just $5.50. I asked the server if I could get a Fish Taco since I didn't see it listed. She said they make a special one for $8.50. I was thinking the higher price was not a good sign, but when it came out, it was a ginormous amount of food, generous with pan-fried cod mixed with fresh salsa wrapped in a large flour tortilla (photo: http://bit.ly/2liVFbq). I finally got the chance to eat here for lunch again after more than a year. I was so happy that there was sit in dining here again during this pandemic. This place serves good food and the people are nice. I've only tried their enchilada plate with carne asada, but it was very good. The carne asada was tasty and fresh, even though it was late at night. The beans were great. I had to channel my high school Spanish teacher to help the waitress understand that we wanted to share our food, but she was very nice about it once she understood. The salsa is yummy and pretty darn spicy, and I am worried that others might double dip in the container. But I will be back to try their chilaquiles. read more

The best way to judge a Mexican restaurant is by the quality of their salsa. If they bring out bland and boring, barely edible salsa it's not going to be good. THIS PLACES SALSA IS THE BOMB. Perfect amount of kick and spice and the chips are golden. When the phenomenal waitress brought out our food (I ordered the enchiladas and my boyfriend a burrito) I was immediately impressed. Plenty of sour cream and the lettuce was real, not that shredded grossness you'll find at subway. The best part? After digging in for a couple minutes my boyfriend turned to me and said, "I'm going to make a bold statement: this is the best burrito I've ever had." I roll past this place back from 24th St. BART to my humble abode. Well, sometime I saunter, or stroll, depending on my mood. But I sort of dragged myself there this last Saturday after a healthy dose of inebriants the night prior. And I ordered something that has always been a curiosity---menudo. The soup that, basically, is a heap of chopped up cow innards that supposedly has restorative qualities after a hard bender. And, well, it had the consistency of cow innards. Undaunted, I slurped down the whole big bowl, which set me back about $6.50. The Negra Modelo was an extra $3. I give three stars because, honestly, I can't tell if that's how good menudo is supposed to be. But they do have a nice TV to watch los Gigantes or las Chivas (a Mexican soccer team). "I'm never eating here again." I'd been getting the veggie nachos here off-and-on for several years. They are usually a very nice big plate of deliciousness that I can take all the way down. Avocado, everything.. yum. I went in today (Sunday) and ordered my usual.. paid in advance and left a healthy tip. The plate that came back was sickly and small. I started picking at it but was sitting at the bar and so said something to the two waitresses standing right next to me. I gave them an opportunity to make it better, but they just pulled the I-don't-speak-english card and said, I don't know. Come on. Later, I hear a loud, sudden thud behind me. I delay my gaze so as not to contribute to any ensuing panic. But there was no commotion . Imagine my surprise to find a very elderly lady completely horizontal on the hard tile floor.. her cane still in hand. Nobody was moving to help her. After we got her resettled, I picked up her groceries for her and walked her home. She reminded me of my own grandmother, so I was easily happy to do it. After that sorry plate of nachos, their indifference to making it better, coupled with the staff and guests apathy to this poor lady who couldn't get up... I was so disgusted that, on my way out I thought, "I'm never eating here again." There are countless other taquerias in the neighborhood. I have had many good nacho plates there in the past, and understand that this could have just been an off-day for them. But with that many people there to watch her rot, I can't help but feel like this is a sub-par pool of humanity gathering there. I'm glad that plate was small.. I lost my appetite. read more

I feel really lucky that this restaurant is right by my apartment. They have outstanding chips and salsa -- freshly deep fried. A huge upgrade from many more popular places. Their standard super burrito is maybe two-thirds the size of somewhere like El Farolito, but made with a lot of care -- the cheese is well melted, the meat is outstandingly cooked, the filling is well distributed. By default, their super burrito has peppers and onions in addition to the meat, which I love. Staff is friendly, service is acceptable. There's always a Spanish-language sports station on. I go here a lot and quite like it, and in most any other neighborhood, it'd be an easy five stars -- it's just that competition for good Mexican food near here so stiff, and frankly, if I lived even five or ten blocks away, I'm sure I'd find new go-to place, which means I'm not enough in love to bump it up to five. Had some of the most delicious Birria de Chivos in the universe here. The soup was hearty and I seriously thin they put half a goat in my soup. There was that much meat. The taste of the goat was gamey so if you don't like that don't have it. The portions were well sized for being 7.50 and I was left feeling extremely stuffed. I've also tried their various breakfast dishes and they all taste equally scrumptious. The tortillas are fluffy and perfect for dipping into the leftover sauce on your barren plate. 4 stars only because the place is a little shady with lots of creepy old men staring you down. Went there for the chilaquiles but was not impressed, and neither was my other half. I'd give it 1 star for food, and an extra star for friendly service. The place looks like it could use a cleaning. Correction: scrubbing. Also the menu on the wall/ceiling should get redone as it doesn't look inviting. I can't speak for their entire menu since this was my first time here. I am completely addicted to their chile rellenos. $5.50 for a half portion (which is still really big because it comes with chips, a little thing of salsa, four handmade tortillas, and sides of rice and beans). One of the best carnitas taco that I had ever had!!! Lots of tasty moist pork with slightly crispiness which was very well dressed with salsa and spices. These are homemade tacos made by a well crafted recipe unlike any other. Tacos are made to order, and extremely well priced. This rating is because of their dishonesty, not their food. Today my coworker and I both ordered a super burrito, she was charged $6 while I was charged $7.75. Both of our burritos are exactly the same size with the exact same fillings. The only difference was that we ordered it at a different time. This has happened to me before, where different waitresses charged different prices, but they were smaller amounts so I never really cared. Now they even took off their menu from the wall! My coworker told me to go and get my money back, but I decided to just never go back. If you guys decide to order from here, check their price first or the waitresses will cheat your money! Chavitas doesn't look like much from the outside...and then when you go inside it still doesn't look like much. I ordered a Michelada ($8) coz any time's a good time and it was pretty darn good. The ratio of mixer to beer was a little mixer-heavy, but it was a HUGE frosty mug so it was a-ok in my book. I got a combo plate with a Chile Relleno and an asada taco ($11). The taco was great, would definitely order again. The Relleno was good, nothing spectacular. The plate came with chopped iceberg, sliced tomatoes, a spoonful of sour cream (not crema) rice and beans. The beans were good but the rice was horrible. Srsly. I would eat rice at every meal if not for #diabeetus , especially Mexican rice (or tomato rice) but this stuff was literally cat rice. I know that makes no sense to anybody except for me, but there's this flavor profile that the only way I can describe is that it tastes like what I would imagine a cat would taste like. That is a horrible thing to say and I really hope that I don't lose all my yelp friends and get thrown off the Elite Squad. I'm considering just deleting it but I'm trying to live my authentic life. Anyway. It's probably just some seasoning because I remember tasting the same flavor at this sketchy Burmese restaurant in Daly City in their tea leaf salad. Iono. No Bueno tho. Its a little further south in the Mission (closer to Cesar Chavez) which is great cause it wasn't that crowded (early in the morning). I've been to Chavita's on several ocassions. The food is always consistently good, homestyle mexican cooking. The tortillas, I think, might be handmade. Get there before 10:00 AM, and they offer breakfast specials for $4! I like their Chile Verde (yummy tender roast pork in a green chile sauce). The waitresses always give great service. read more
