Tato is a modern mexican joint with plenty of options and unique flavors. Overall, a good spot for lunch with different flavors than a traditional Mexican taqueria. Price seemed about average for SF, but I was disappointed by the sides that came with the meal. Food comes out fast and it was an enjoyable lunch, but I had a few notes. Overall: 4.4/5 My mushroom quesadilla was quite good. Very good flavor, loaded with mushrooms. Quesadilla was definitely on the greasy side. I was surprised by the pickled onions and veggies on top. Was acidic with a balsamic taste which helped to cut through the grease. The chips were good but the cauliflower on the side was very acidic and sour, not my personal preference. I wish they included more chips, but considering that I got it for the daily special price of $12, I thought it was good. The taco plate was also good. Loaded with veggies and a good portion of meat, but I was also dissapointed by the amount of sides included. A small portion of chips, rice and beans. For $15, I would have hoped for more. Service was fine. Order at the counter and we were the only ones at the time. Very cute place inside. Friendly customer service. I got the shrimp taco plate. Personally, the food was mid. I liked the toppings in my tacos. The beans were probably the star of the show in my opinion. The tortillas were a big no for me. Very dry and chalky. Shrimp was okay. The matcha chata, wasn't good either. It was watery with little to no flavor. I did appreciate that I got more than one limón. The deal is pretty decent. Next time, I will try the bowl. read more

I told my vegan friend when he was in town next we would go here for lunch and that's exactly what we did today after picking him up from SFO. We found easy parking across the street and I was surprised to see just how big the restaurant is. There are a number of tables in the front, and then they have a shaded patio outside with additional seating. Since it's hot today, we decided to grab a table inside with a few other lunch patrons. You can mix and match the taco plate, so I got the steak, chicken, and squash tacos with their horchata cocktail. My friend also had a taco platter with the carrot, mushroom, and salmon tacos and their hibiscus like margarita. Our food came out in about 5-10 minutes with our drinks following. I really enjoyed the plate, even the rice and beans were flavorful. I don't know that I could pick a favorite taco, they all had different flavor profiles and I thought they were all good. If I had a complaint, it would be the tacos were overfilled, but I just ate some off with a fork until I could eat it with my hands. My cocktail was also delicious. It's not enough to knock a star, but it seems like the seating area also doubles as a storage area, and it could look a lot cleaner if some of that was behind doors and cabinets. I'm in the neighborhood a-lot and if I'm as hungry as I was I may try a margarita and maybe see if another dish is less salty. SERVICE: 10/10 the staff was friendly and food can out fast enough. AMBIANCE: 6/10 The restaurant is bigger than I expected and decor is a 10 and I love the music (modern spanish) was perfect. There are string lights on the back patio that give the impression that there is night seating but they close at 5pm? the place needs a little attention to detail (no toilet seat covers) in the bathroom. First timer here, I found Tato simply because I was hungry & didn't wanna leave far from home. Never even knew this place existed so I thought I'd try it out. Funny thing is I came here on a Friday which is a day they have specials for burritos. FYI: they have specials EVERYDAY!!! I ordered over the phone for pickup so when I arrived all the staff were very friendly and the place was very clean. I must say I've never had a grilled burrito before (because I find them dry) so that was different. I also read the menu a little too fast before I ordered and missed that the burrito came with mushrooms. But overall everything was good. Can't complain about something that I missed. Finding quality eats in Bayview no longer feels like panning for fool's gold to me as I've discovered several dining destinations over the last several months, enough for me to take the T MUNI line without thinking I had to choose exclusively between taquerias and fried chicken joints for sustenance. Not that tacos and fried chicken are not worth seeking out sometimes, but there's a lot more. Take, for example, All Good Pizza, where beyond their pies, they make a great arugula salad with lots of fresh ingredients (review: https://bit.ly/36gtohl). It turns out that owner Kristin Houk is the one responsible for this fresh take on Mexican, and the results were impressive. Her menu was pretty straightforward. Choose among four types of standard Mexican staples: taco, burrito, bowl, or quesadilla. There were eight filling selections spanning protein and veggie options, or you can decide among four salads and two burgers. There were plenty of sides available as well like tortilla soup and esquites (Mexican street corn kernels). I felt indulgent and ordered not one but two dishes little realizing how generous the portions would be given the reasonable prices. First up was the $12 Chopped Salad served in a bowl filled with romaine, esquites, shaved watermelon radish, avocado slices, red onions, poblanos, and tortilla crumbles, dressed in a lime buttermilk dressing (photo: https://bit.ly/35uzniq). I had an excellent experience with the mushroom tacos at this Bayview restaurant that is one of a few spots in the community pushing the oft-neglected southeastern corner of San Francisco into a foodie up-and-comer. The tacos brought a delightful complexity of flavors to the table. Not only were the portions generous, but the prices were quite fair for the amount of food you get. Us locals wear our native badges proudly because it's a rare thing. The Mexican food here is straight up good, & it defies any one label; fresh & trendy, but also extremely well made & rooted in someone's traditional family recipes, I'd venture to guess. It doesn't hurt that Tato is generous with the garnishes, condiments, & toppings. As much as we've sampled over the past couple years, there is still so much menu left to explore. A few notes on items we have tried: -- chilaquiles & tatopos are personal favorites -- they don't skimp on the shrimp we add to their wonderful chopped salad -- quesadillas are completely stuffed (we've had both mushroom & chicken), & I love the side of arugula salad/pickled cauliflower -- esquites is topped with all the usual elote fixins but I prefer corn on the cob -- blackberry lemon agua fresca is a little light on flavor -- I might be mistaken but I don't see an option to order individual tacos, theirs come three to an order. A fellow workshop attendee joined me for lunch a second day in a row and I gave my standard disclaimer as she drove us to Tato. "I've never been to this place but I've heard good things" I said, trying to shift responsibility for my choice of lunch destinations, just in case. Parked and standing inside, looking at Tato's menu and decor, she started complimenting me on my choice. As she ate her Shrimp Tacos, those compliments grew and by the time we left she was declaring me the person who should make all our lunch decisions from that day forward. So it's fair to say she liked Tato. I did too. The menu here is quite intriguing, straddling some line between traditional Mexican fare and upscale Mexican fare with some sidelines into fusion and healthy fare. I mean, your average taqueria menu doesn't call their beans "borracho beans" nor call out ingredients such as "lime crema", "organic lacinto kale" and "blistered poblano peppers". Seeing a menu like this gives me a clue that the kitchen is doing interesting and thoughtful things. I opted for a Carne Asada Bowl ($12) which included those borracho beans and that lime crema but also roasted mushrooms, avocado salsa verde, and chimichuri. It was a really nice bowl of food, nicely priced too. Tato is casual with a somewhat stylish interior and a well-executed, interesting menu. So I mixed up the days that specials are offered. Whatever you can pay is on Friday's Quesadilla and $7.00 dollar margaritas. I instead showed up on Tuesday the special three tacos (salmon, steak, shrimp, chicken or veggie) , tortilla chips and rice and beans all for $10.00 dollars. So I selected steak, shrimp and salmon tacos. The steak was tender and seasoned nicely and the seafood was flavorful , they were all accompanied with fresh cilantro, herbs and limes, the rice and beans were tasty as well. I love it when my plans go slightly to the left and end up leading me to a great gem. I loved my lunch and I will return on Friday so I can try that special with a margarita (the prickly pear) sounds interesting. I was told that the hours are 11:00 a.m until 4:00 p.m. I arrived around 2:00 p.m. and there was maybe 5-6 people there. It's in the Bayview Area, it's accessible by T-Train from China Town or Bus. Holy Tato!!!!! We are regulars at All Good Pizza and when I went on their website, I saw they had a taco shop not far away and a coffee shop as well!!! First, thank you for bringing deliciousness to the bayview . Now back to Tato...I placed our order over the phone and was told it'd be ready in ten minutes! Street parking was plentiful and when I walked in, I was pleasantly surprised how clean, how beautifully decorated and airy the interior was (they have outside dining as well) and how friendly the staff was!!! The food was already bagged and ready for us to enjoy. We ordered a variety of chicken, steak, shrimp and pork tacos. Wow, wow wow! Tato serves up some pretty good Mexican in a modern, clean joint in the middle of Bayview! They currently have a cute little space built along the sidewalk for outdoor dining during COVID-19. Also, it looks like they have Taco Tuesdays $10 for 3 tacos along with other specials. I visited Tato for their $15 lunch for fall Restaurant Week 2020, which included a chopped salad and choice of three carnitas or mushroom tacos. The chopped salad comes with esquites, watermelon radish, roasted poblano peppers, and buttermilk herb dressing. Everything was very fresh and light, despite the dairy-based dressing. It was actually quite zesty, in fact! The chopped nature makes this salad very easy to eat, and all the ingredients go so well together. The pops of texture from the sweet corn, shallots, and tortilla strips made this great as well. The three carnitas tacos with herbed rice and borracho beans was a yummy meal! Plentiful, moist carnitas with fresh cilantro, onions, squeezes of lime, perfectly crisp pickled veggies - I ate every scrap of these tacos, despite the salsa verde not being present! The herbed rice was definitely aromatic, kind of coconutty, but dried out. Still, not too bad. The borracho beans, or drunken beans, definitely had that complex, yeast aftertaste from the beer, and were soft. The butternut quesadilla was very good and tasty and spicy. Both quesadilla's came with some carrots and cauliflower that tasted pickled which we both loved. She enjoyed her shrimp quesadilla, it came with red cabbage and spices. My butternut squash came with yogurt and pumpkin seeds on it. It was very flavorful, and spicy if you like spice. Omg so we stopped here for lunch on Saturday. Mins you they were closing in less than 45 mins. They took our order, food was prompt and hot and service was great. I had this amazing salad!! Well it's a bowl but in Kay fashion no rice or beans and add extra arugula. I had steak, mushrooms, onions, avocado, jalapeños with fresh garlic and chimichurri. So bomb didn't even use dressing just threw some of the amazing salsa- green and red on top and it was to die for. I went here with a party of seven on a Saturday around 1:45pm. Non-metered street parking around the block was fairly easy. The food was excellent! The ingredients were very fresh and high quality. My husband was very impressed with the smash burger; he said that you could really taste the meat, which had good flavor. I enjoyed the salmon tacos, of which the salmon also had delicious seasoning and was cooked nicely. They sure are generous with the proteins in the tacos! I had generously large chunks of salmon, and my father-in-law kept happily exclaiming he had so much carnitas in his tacos. Some of our parents ordered the Saturday special $10 chilaquiles (added $4 for carnitas) and they were very pleased with their orders as well. My mom shared with me because it was generous portion. Other people in our group ordered steak burritos, which were presented beautifully- sliced in half and colorful! They were also delicious and large. We also had great horchata and the hibiscus lime drinks. You know the food is good when everyone in my family is eating quietly for once. The employees were all very friendly and expedient. No single use plastics, with the exception of straws (which you could opt to not take!) were used at dine in at Tato, which made me happy. They had real silverware, dishes and mason jars for self-serve water. There are clean bathrooms and a cute, colorful patio for outdoor dining. We brought our own reusable containers for leftovers. We were so full that none of us ate dinner that night! Great value! Towards the end of our meal, we heard rap music (not loud- pleasant volume) and as we were walking out, we realized it was a live performer at the front end of the restaurant. My friend from Taiwan said, "What?! I thought that was the radio!" He sounded great! This would be a place to which we'd all look forward to coming back! When I had selected this "new place" to eat lunch, my mom had wanted to change restaurants to a favorite Mexican restaurant of hers. However, after trying Tato, we don't know if that other place is still her favorite anymore. I had to follow up for my colleague and for myself. 20 minutes and a follow up before my colleague got the rest of his order. Another 20 odd minutes for the rest of my order. Mind you... there was about one to two receipts in the queue only. Had the carne asada taco, shrimp taco, and corn w/ chips. Bill came out to be about $18, with tip, about $20 and change. Wow what a gorgeous restaurant! Located on 3rd street in Bayview, the restaurant is colorful, airy, bright, spacious (kid friendly). The location is in Bayview so that's just something to be mindful of but when we stepped inside the restaurant it felt like we had stepped into Havana or somewhere much more tropical. 3.5 STARS WHOA. That was my first reaction when I walked into Tato. It's hip. It's bright. It's festive. The talavera tiles, mustard colored stools, IG friendly spice shelf, and everything about the ambiance s-c-r-e-a-m-s Valencia street in The Mission. In a good way of course because it's very impressive with what they did with the space. From the owners of All Good Pizza (https://www.yelp.com/biz/all-good-pizza-san-francisco ) comes Tato, a casual Mexican spin off in Bayview. I'm a fan of All Good Pizza so I was very excited to hear they were opening another business in the area. If you're familiar with Bayview then you know, it's pretty much a food desert with the exception of some great chicken & waffles (from Auntie April's next door) and hearty, value-driven Hawaiian plates from Huli Huli. It's great to see the owners, who are long-time Bayview residents bring life to this area. On the menu are snacks (chips + salsa, tortilla soup, street corn, etc), salads, tacos, quesadillas, and tostadas. Vegetarian and vegan friendly. There's a FULL bar which unfortunately, I couldn't take advantage of since I had to get back to work afterwards. They have happy hour specials on Tuesdays - Fridays 4 pm - 6 pm: 3 tacos for $10, $5 street dogs, $4 beers, and $7 margaritas. Tato is counter service only - order at the counter, seat yourself, and your name will be called when your order is ready. What drew me to Tato was the Mexican Fusion items particularly the Banh Mi Style Taco so that what I ordered along with the Al Pastor Taco and a bowl of Tortilla Soup. The tacos arrived first - Carnitas Banh Mi Taco w/ carrot slaw, sriracha crema & Al Pastor Taco w/ spit roasted pork shoulder, grilled pineapple, salsa verde ($4 each): https://bit.ly/2MLrE0a. --Banh Mi Taco: This was a banh mi style taco since there was no bread (banh mi = bread in Vietnamese) and it had all the flavor profiles of a good banh mi. The carrot slaw had great acidity and the sriracha crema added heat and creaminess. The double la palma corn tortillas held up well to the generous pile of tender carnitas. --Al Pastor Taco: Loved the creamy, tangy salsa verde on the al pastor taco. The al pastor was in large, unmanageable pieces though so it was hard to get a clean bite. It was missing the grilled pineapple so that was a bummer. I'm glad I only ordered two tacos because they were filling. After finishing my tacos, the Tortilla Soup: Roasted tomato, pasilla, cilantro, avocado (missing), crema, shallots, lime ($6) arrived: https://bit.ly/2xGBhb5. I've never had this style of tortilla soup before. It was tomato heavy which tasted like a cross between a warm salsa and marinara sauce to me. I didn't like it but that's my fault for not reading the menu more carefully. I visited for a late lunch (around 1:25 pm) and there was no line. It took 25 minutes for my tacos and 30 minutes for the soup to arrive. I noticed that people who ordered after me, received their order before me. If I didn't have to get back to work, I wouldn't have cared so much but I had to quickly shove the tacos in my mouth and take the soup to go. Overall 3.5 stars but rounding up to 4 stars. A bunch of us coworkers volunteered at the Winter Wonderland that was held around the corner from this place and @Rebekah Thomson recommended we try out Tato. This place is awesome from the ambiance to their menu selections. Since it was my first time here I needed a few minutes to look over their menu. But looking through their menu it made it more difficult to choose as everything sounds delish. I decided on their Chicken Tinga Quesadillas which definitely was a great choice. My coworkers ordered burritos, tacos, and their butternut squash quesadillas and chips and guacamole for the table.
