I had an awful experience. My daughter and I visited to order a special cake for a birthday. As soon as we walked in, the woman in the preparation area immediately ran toward us and angrily stated that what she had was onthe shelves. We had not opened our mouths or taking more than 2 steps inside. My daughter and I looked at each other for a second, then I politely stated that we would like to order a special birthday cake (added a big grin). The woman kept her angry face, voice and demeanor and tossed a paper onto the counter and said, "you need to place an order 3 days prior". She exhibited what I can only describe as hate or anger. I am not sure if she was having a bad day, or if this was due to my biracial daughter; I truly hope it is not the latter. Needless to say, we left after trying to ask a few more questions to acquire more information regarding our potential cake. We will never buy anything from this store, and will let everyone know how we were treated. read more

I've never been in the store, but my mom has ordered multiple cakes from spellbound and they have all been delicious! One example is of the peanut butter chocolate cake...very rich and very tasty. I could only eat a little sliver because it was so rich but the flavor was superb. The owner is also very friendly and a very talented baker. Eh. Just eh. That's not terrible, it certainly isn't great either. The Mother's Day cake was absolutely beautiful. Flowers on top looked lovely. And then we cut into it. I could tell immediately it was dry. And sadly, I was right. I should have known and tried them another time when they aren't as busy and aren't in mass-assembly mode. This place although small has delicious and wonderful treats. You can sneak a peak into the kitchen and watch them do their magical frosting or you can stare at the beauties in their case. I absolutely love their cakes. They are always fabulous and they have different flavors all the times. I ordered a cake for my sons first birthday after admiring her cakes on Facebook and her website. I called and wanted a baseball cake. She said "we don't do shapes. But if you trust us we can make it baseball theme." Big mistake. My mom picked up the cake and it had a paper baseball in the middle that was peeling up. It looked horrible. I'm not one to complain. I called and said "I received a cake for my sons birthday and I don't like the paper baseball in the middle. Looks cheap. Can I bring it back and you can put a baseball with icing." She was beyond rude and said "it's not paper. It's edible. And no. I can put sprinkles over it." I've never dealt with someone so rude. I peeled off the baseball all the way and tasted it, it was disgusting. Definitely not edible. So I went to the store and got sprinkles and fixed it myself, it looked so much better! The cake was good, not out of this world amazing but better than a grocery store. But not worth giving business to someone who doesn't care about customers. For a 55 dollar cake I expected better. We stopped by this morning to try some little treats - chocolate chip cookie, canolli cupcake, and a chocolate plum macaron. All was excellent. I also grabbed a coffee, which was good. The treat selection is big without being overwhelming. The decor is whimsical, but it's clearly more of a place to come in for big orders than a cafe where you come to chill. There's just one large table, though I noticed a few chairs out front in the grass too. If I were planning a party, I would definitely think of this spot for the dessert. I only tried the macaron, and it was delightful. Maybe the best macaron I've ever had. The filling was flavorful without being overly sweet. The shells were light as air, with just a light crunch. Kids devoured the cupcake & cookie and proclaimed them delicious. Service was friendly, and patient with our slow decision making. My only complaint was that there seemed to be only one size and option in the coffee - hot drip in a grande sized cup. This was fine, I just like to have options. This is clearly not the focus, though, and that's fine. We will definitely go back, especially for a big order. read more

What a great find in the WeHa area! I have been craving a good cupcake for the longest time. The second you walk into the store your nose is hit with the amazing scent of baked goods. It's a small store, but you can tell it's fill with character. The whole entire seating area is filled with Alice in Wonderland memorabilia. Now let's get to the cupcakes... I tried the Cookie Monster and red velvet cupcakes. At first I thought the Cookie Monster cupcake was just a chocolate cupcake with buttercream, but when I bit into it and found a big chunk of cookie dough I was beyond pleasantly surprised. The red velvet was also delicious. The cream cheese frosting was the perfect consistency and taste. I'd give both cupcakes an A! The only "negative" to Taste by Spellbound is that the cupcakes are smaller than what I'd like, but the price makes up for the amazing taste. I will definitely be coming back! read more

I WOULD NOT recommend this bakery. I had special ordered a cake for a gender reveal only to be notified as I was pulling in the West Hartford parking lot to pick it up to hear a message that the cake wasn't there and was still " in the oven" at a different location and would not be done (for at least an hour to an hour and a half.) The gathering for this event was out of state and obviously, the cake was supposed to be the "essential part" to this reveal party. I raced over to the Avon store where I was told the cake had been ready but the delivery person had " forgotten" to bring it to West Hartford. It also had not been decorated as I had discussed when I placed the order. When I called Miriam, the owner to discuss the matter she was extremely rude and denied or perhaps simply "forgot" our original conversation. Such a shame! Yes, the confections are a bit pricey, HOWEVER, my beer pockets think that it is money well spent. That being said... my birthday cake... dark chocolate cake with raspberry filling and dark chocolate frosting... to say it was magnificent is a gross understatement. There's no shortage of cupcake places in the area these days. TBS is far and away the best! There is something magical about their cupcakes. I've also ordered a cake from them and was really happy with that. Truffles are amazing. The one thing I will caution is that they have limited stock, I assume to keep things fresh. I was at first mesmerized by the cool concept, decor, and array of cookies, but the "magic" has completely burst like a bubble after experiencing owner's unfriendliness. She made me feel extremely unwelcome at which I was surprised as I dropped around $15 on three small cookies. The vibe was closer to a witch's den that than kind of magical spellbound. It was supposed to be filled with fruit but barley had any and what little fruit that was inside wasn't ripe..... peaches where hard. I also found that the frosting was a bit overwhelming. We were considering giving them another chance as we have another birthday coming up so I decided to check out the website. Wanted to see if they have a photo gallery of different types of cakes and ways they "decorate." There are more photos with the owner then the actual product they sell. I then went to the Facebook page only to find even more photos of the owner. Tho there were more pics of cakes on the Facebook page I find that the cake decorating seems a bit limited with mostly just swirls. It'd be nice to see a variety of cakes decorated different ways and less photos of the owner. I only have interest in the product they are selling (which is sub par) not the owners photo shoots. After checking out he website and Facebook page we changed our minds and decided to go to harvest cafe. Seems the owner is more stuck on themselves then they are producing quality product. TBS has become a new and wonderful destination for me! The delicious, ever-changing daily offerings make this a frequent stop (and I'm rewarded with free truffles after filling my punch card!). While the cupcakes aren't huge (or dry), they are perfectly and creatively flavored, moist and beautiful. There is a eye for detail, that is clearly evident in all of the sweet treats, from the finely ground nuts on the truffles to the chocolate-enrobed candy bars and the simple and perfect cookies. The buttercream frosting, devoid of shortening is wonderful, the bars: lemon, birthday cake, toffee, etc. are addictive and the relaxed and helpful atmosphere of the two stores is just sweet! Call ahead to check on or to save something that you see on the daily IG updates. Baking is done daily and things sell out often. The drive may be a little long for you, but it's a lovely one that you will not regret. read more

Stopped into this little gem last Saturday afternoon to pick up a tasty treat for my son. Ended up picking a vanilla cupcake with chocolate buttercream frosting and sprinkles on top! What kid doesn't love sprinkles. To my delight cupcakes were buy one get one free! On top of getting a great deal the cupcakes were amazing! The woman in the shop was sweet and it was an adorable little place. I love shopping local! Supporting a small business like this is easy when it's so good! We had a box with two truffles (hazelnut and peter rabbit) as our wedding favors. From the beginning Miriam was very responsive to my emails and always very sweet! The truffles were to die for and we received numerous compliments from our guests on them! They were deliciously tasty and delicate :) I just wish the second location she is about to open was closer to Stamford.. I would probably stop by the shop at least once a week! I fancy NY pastry shops, this is definitely up there in scale. 5 Stars are too little too give! We used TBS for our desserts for our wedding- Miriam and her team are the IDEAL VENDOR. The cake/cupcakes/treats and ESPECIALLY the Macarons were AMAZING. Her prices were more than reasonable considering the quality of her ingredients and how delicious and beautiful everything came out. Also important to note- Miriam responds back to emails within hours. She is a far better businesswoman than most wedding vendors we encountered. She and her team are so hardworking- have a eye for attention to detail, and are so sweet, gracious and unassuming. Every dessert at our wedding looked like it could have been in GreenWeddingShoes Blog post. Miriam hand delivered our desserts herself to ensure everything was perfect and that we were satisfied. I would highly recommend this business to any bride (or party planner)- miriam was so easy/pleasant to work with, exceeded my expectations, and by far our favorite vendor for our wedding. I don't even like sweets but went in with a friend who does. I was stunned at how good the truffles were. Fillings like peanut butter, coconut almond or red velvet cake underneath a very thin layer of dark, white or milk chocolate. Very unique in style and in taste. Taste by Spellbound is the most charming little shop in the area. The very nice and young owner knows her stuff with cakes, cake balls and all kinds of baked goods and cookies. They also sell coffee and my favorite San Pelligrino sodas. There are fewer than ten little tables where you could sit and sip your drink and try all the delicious treats the owner makes herself in the open kitchen. I wish I could have sampled a few more items while I was there, but all were nearly all sold out by the time I arrived mid-afternoon-a good sign! Definitely worth a try! read more
