Yes there is vegan food in West Garfield Park. It's a bit greasy, and sometimes they only have the seitan "chicken" and not the "steak," but it's there, and open late. If you do want it vegan, make sure you ask for no mayo and no cheese. You may think this is a sketchy neighborhood, but the staff and other patrons were all friendly and helpful and otherwise normal people. The staff knew what "vegan" means and hooked us up without the third degree. Apparently the vegan cheesesteaks are ordered all the time. They added it to the menu because of customer requests, so they sound pretty responsive. As I said, they were out of steak-style seitan, so for $8.00 I got the chicken-style cheesesteak with no mayo and no cheese, a mound of greasy fries with skins on them, and a pink lemonade. I thought the bread on the sandwich was surprisingly good: nice and soft. I would order with hot sauce on it next time though. Fries were not that great, but with ketchup and salt were fine. The pink lemonade was very sweet, pretty much like Kool-aid. They have no seating other than what's chained off. You have to eat standing up at the counters, or take it to the park or something. I don't think they had public restrooms either.

this is one of the best spot to eat a philly steak sandwich with fresh cut fries wit mild sauce and large red koolaid.... freakin awesome sauce real talk its like heaven on your taste buds ....

"Best of both worlds" philly" & some terrible fries

Damn good philly sandwhich. I'd give a slight edge to (Philly's Best) for the sole fact that they use "cheez wiz" however if you're not a die hard carnivore the literal shards of the steak at Philly's can be a bit much. I loved how the protein is minced here. There were plenty of ways to customize your meal here such as additional "jerk" or "lemon pepper on your fries as well (although if you choose bare fries like I did they're quite forgettable. It's a bit far to travel here solely for food however if you're in the area or desperate late at night this will suffice.

I ordered one to go and demolished it later that night, like usual. I did sit in and have a few beers and bites. Somehow I've been sleeping on the onion rings and wings this whole time. Listen, listen, listen, Linda, the onion rings; Do Not Change Them!!! Don't you dare switch to those battered, frozen, chain-restaurant rings of bull-s. These are the good rings. Now, the wangzzzz. I'm not going to pretend these are the absolute best wings in the entire city, but they are absolutely in the "I will randomly crave these on a Tuesday" category. The meat could use a little marinade situation to bring more flavor inside, but that crispy coating holds up to the sauce like a champ. I like it, I like it, I like it. Extra points for a buffalo sauce that actually has some thickness to it and isn't just "here's some hot sauce, on a wing being called buffalo sauce. Now, I am going to need to try some of the other wing sauces, but if they hold up too. I would rather come here than go to some other well known wing spots. Honestly, I can see myself rolling through just for wings, rings, and vibes. And that Golden Monkey beer? Yeah, go ahead and keep that on tap forever. Please and thank you. haha

Although we could order food for delivery, my bud and I decided to walk over to place our order direct and then bring the food back to the bar. This gave me the opportunity to check out the eatery, which also sells all sorts of fun food snacks, beverages and products. There are a few tables should you wish to dine there. I ordered a half sandwich and my lovely wife wanted an order of cheese fries. I figured the half "Classic Reuben" would be a nice snack, but the portion looked more like a full sandwich rather than a mere half. The Reuben is served warm and tasty with corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing. The cheese fries were generously covered with cheese sauce, and fortunately we ate them fairly quickly so they did not become too soggy. Our friends ordered full sandwiches, and so each sandwich seemed like two sandwiches in size. Needless to say, they had leftover sandwiches to take home. Ironically, I do not believe anything we ordered contained any pickle, oh well.

Oh, how I miss that one big guy that used to say, "gimmie a beef, drag it, and a bag to travel"…read more Or, "gimme an ice, cap it, next!" Johnnie's is an icon, just based on the experience of listening to that guy talk. Ah, but he's long gone, and new ownership abounds. But the beef is still great. One of the best beef sandwiches around, combos that are seasoned just right, and Italian ice That hits the spot on a hot summer day. I think the hot dogs are just a throw in, and the fries are decent. But it's the beef that keeps bringing you back. Not much ambiance, unless you want to stand and watch the cars roll by on North Avenue, but the smell of the sausage cooking is intoxicating. The price of the beef has gone up, and I swear it's a tad smaller, but if you're in the neighborhood, nothing hits the spot quite like a Johnnie's beef sandwich. I can still hear the big guy...."Whaddah need, gimmie a beef, wet, sweet and hot, That'l be nine fiffy two, bag it, next!" I miss him...

Choosing an "off" night (example: a weeknight) or during a less-than-ideal time (example: during a snowstorm) will give you the quickest experience for Johnnie's as the line can get LONG and parking is terrible (tiny lot). Note: this was my second visit as my first attempt, on Father's Day 2025, was a magnificent bust. We had no line and plenty of seating this time! They have a big menu, but save the cute stuff for a follow-up visit and get a beef (& hot dog is really hungry). Do yourself a favor and get an Italian Ice too, time of year is irrelevant. You can thank me after your tastebuds recover from being overwhelmed. Is the food THAT much better than other spots, you ask? Not handedly, no. But the whole experience, especially if you wait in line (in the sun as there is zero shade), is what makes this place great. It really is a delightful Chicago experience. Put Johnnie's at the top of your list this summer, plan accordingly, and ENJOY!

It's one of the best places to get top tier cultural flavors. The location is perfectly central, approachable, but authenticly local. Decor is as you'd think a beef shop in Chicago to be, service is a little more on the cheerful side due to the Greek influence. Prices are on par with dining in the area for quality Chicago. My go to order is the Italian Combo with a gyro platter to snack on the sliced meat and fries. My 2nd fav order is the Big Daddy burger (tsaiziki and bbq on the side) and a Maxwell Street Polish giving you a bit of everything Chicago. Usually places evolve to the changing wants of the neighborhood, but they sell Greek and Italian equally well. They have always done beef tallow, and it's a shame they have to mention it becuase the rest of the world went away from that when they didn't. Great fries, and a good amount per order. I have yet to try the salads, but it's hard to wow people with them when it doesn't say Salad's in the name... The beef is tender (gyro, roast beef, burger), well seasoned, rendered. The breads are toothsome, soft, crunchy, chewy. The sauces and condiments are crunchy, smooth, blended and balanced. The pizza puff is another far less known Chicago staple for the picky eaters, they also have chicken tenders for the kids. All in all it's a 1st rate stop off for all things Beef and all things Chicago.
