Cheese Fries and Italian Beef Sandwich
    Zo B.

I was in Chicago and said to myself "I need an Italian beef". Was over by university of Chicago and Yelp pointed me in this direction. As I pulled into the parking lot I asked a lady waiting in her car, what I should get. She suggested an Italian beef or the wings. I went with the beef extra wet, light peppers and cheese fries. I ordered cheese in my sandwich, but it was forgotten. The service was good, I even got a strawberry lemonade Sunkist included with my meal. the cashier assured me my choice of meal was the right one. I put some of the cheese fries directly on my sandwich and whew was it delicious. The food was seasoned perfectly, but it was a bit messy. I learned quickly that this was not a meal to eat while driving. It was a huge portion of food for under $15. I guess the neighborhood is supposed to be a bit sketchy, but I'm a Black woman, in a Black neighborhood so I wasn't too concerned, and it was daylight. Overall, the food is good, just go during the day, and pay attention to your surroundings.

The white door that's the entrance to this spot is makes me feel like I am on set of Candyman. It's a huge projectish white dingy door. Please either paint it or get a new one!!!! It's a small hood restaurant with no seats. The order taker and cook are behind plexiglass. I ordered an Italian Beef extra extra dipped with cheese fries and a cream soda. I was surprised they had cream soda usually places in the hood don't carry cream soda. The guy wrote my order down then told the cook I wanted a combination... I interjected fast. I repeated my order again and he got it right. So double check that order is right. I see in the other reviews they aren't accurate sometimes. I experienced it first hand. Anyway my total was $9.60.. It took like 8 mins. My beef was great!! Nicely dipped like I asked! They had seasoned fries underneath all the cheese. They didn't skimp on the cheese. Now I didn't like that the Italian Beef meat wasn't sliced like at other places (i.e Portillo's) the meat was chopped up. I think that's their way stretching their product. But my meal was ghetto goodness!

    Italian beef...just ok!

I only gave three stars... I will start by saying the reason I went here is because I kept seeing people on FB post about how delicious the offerings are here. My hubby ordered the super taco and ended up with a gyro... I ordered the Italian beef with black pepper and mild on fries although they forgot to. So they don't listen well make sure your order is correct. The beef was nothing to write home about. Hubby pita was not crispy either. I did notice they use fresh chicken breast for their tenders maybe I will give them a second try!

Everything I've ever bought from here has been delicious. My favorites as of late is the Italian Beef or the Gym Shoe. They have affordable prices and good size portions. I'd recommend calling ahead to avoid waiting. It's cash only.

Terrible service and food is never on time or what I've paid for, constantly missing items and all they do is blame the drivers.

There's even a community board towards the bathroom, which gives this spot a community-based vibe. It's a quick, casual spot with several tables open for grabs when people leave. I got a traditional everything bagel w cream cheese to start the day, which had the RIGHT amt of cream cheese. Sometimes places give wayy too much, ruining the exp. I also ordered their popular Sumac Chicken sandwich on their Dutch Crunch bread, which was really good!! The bread had a slight sweetness to it that was satisfying and the flavors altogether were soo yummy. I waited ~12 min for my order, since they were rightfully packed. No outside food/drinks allowed if you're grabbing a table to eat. There's WiFi and a restroom in the back. Lots of neighborhood regulars. It had homemade croutons and sides of bread. Got a slice of the carrot cake and it was very moist. Not too sweet with cream cheese frosting. Raisins included, if that matters to you. We got the garlic chicken on French baguette. It was a creamy base and not something I would buy again. Glad we added cheese because there wasn't much to it. the other sandwich we bought was avocado turkey on Dutch crunch. It unfortunately had enough mayo to drown the restaurant. The amount of meat left much to be desired. We asked for chips which they had but only for online orders that came in. ??? Doesn't make sense to me. For 2 Sammie's, a salad and cake it was $45, just for a gauge of prices. The cashier was on the phone the entire time and couldn't hear what we said because of that. Kinda acted inconvenienced we were talking while he was on the phone. The restaurant is pretty chill and seemed like a workspace for people with art on the walls for sale. The art also had a thick layer of dust, and overall the dining room could use a good deep clean. The bathroom cleanliness was decent. This probably won't be another place I would seek out in the future.

I probably would not…read morehave stumbled upon this on my own, but the notion of a perfect fusion of Greek, Jewish and Italian (The Holy Trinity) immigrant flavors in probably the most American sandwich you could have thought of. Thankfully this came about pretty naturally where these communities converge. I mean it's "we have the meats" and cold weather food combined. Corned Beef & Mustard from the Jewish cuisine, Roast Beef & Gaird from the Italians, Tzaziki & gyro from the Greeks and LTOC from American sandwiches. Some people and places put mayo and ketchup on there, but it muddies the cultures and makes it feel like not just a meat bomb, but a sauce bomb too leaving things indistriguishable. It's got this combination of hot and cold, crunch and chew, spice and cooling sauces. The only thing I'd like to see changed is have horseradish sauce in the sandwich and have the tzaziki as a dipping sauce. The cheese is swiss, but I'd like some cooper sharp, but I don't want to confuse NY'ers who chop their sandwiches (pre chew as I call it) as it might be a little too melty. The fries are well done, but putting them IN the sandwich is too much. The hoagie roll can barely handle all this meat on it's own. People say to use the BBQ sauce for the fries, but it muddles the flavor experience. I like to bring my own celery salt bc I love it on a Chicago dog so much that I think it helps. The bread is softer, but doesn't fall apart (don't take it out of the aluminum foil, like the In N Out burger, don't remove it from the diaper) It's not a classy sandwich shop, but a blue collar, greasy, cash only, curt coustomer service place that the is for the working man and the hungry man alike. Locals love this place becuase of how authentic it is and it's easy to see why everything is so popular. It's all good and it all sells. The only thing more popular is their wings, large, meaty, well seasoned. There is no eating inside or outside, so it's to go only. Grab one on your lunch break, best place to eat nearby is the telephone pole you could lean against or the hood of your car. Like most top tier places there is a way to order. It's not drunk food like Maxwells, becuase it's not singular in flavor. It's everything. A kitchen sink if you well, hence the name Gym Shoe. You might think it's some funky shoe, but it's a $300 pair of Jordans. It's open 24 hours, so depending on the hour it could get sketchy, but it's popular amongs LEO's that people wont mess with you too much. Service is decent, far less full of themselves as hotdog places around here, borderline friendly. My favorite way to wash this down is with a Mexican coke. Becuase there is so much meat, cheese, sauces it actually warms up pretty well if you can't finish it. Unlike other Chicago foods like the rigobene's breaded steak sandwich or a Jibarito. While it's something you can only find not just here (Chicago), but only in the Southside. It's hyper local. Unlike many foods which can't actually be replicatable elsewhere, this one can. You can find all the ingredients yourself. I don't reccomend doing that becuase eventhough I'm writing this, your not finding this unless your a foodie or interested in Chicago, i'm still sort of gatekeeping things. No sandwich shop owner has really come up with this anywhere else.
