I love you, Tart Baking Co. I love your almond croissants and your ham-and-cheese baguettes. I love your hours which include that you are open on Sundays. I love that you haven't completely run out of everything I love by 3 pm (but sometimes; it's cutting it close). I look forward to trying more of your selections. So glad you took over this space and improved several things. Keep doing what you do! PS for those of you who have read this far: I already stated that I love the almond croissants. I read several reviews slamming them. DON'T YOU BELIEVE IT! Those people are just trying to keep more for themselves. If you don't like a gooey center, get the bread with the almond topping. SO GOOD! Under recent new ownership, there have been improvements: A little decor update, some improved displays/counter arrangements. They even figured out a way to get that whistling asshole out from in front of the store! Unfortunately, the baked goods are still often black and scorched on the bottom, and shatteringly overbaked. I had hoped when the baker departed to start his own joint, things would get better. I had hoped when ownership changed, things would get better. They have not. There's some real gems here- the ham and cheese stuffed baguettes that come out around lunch time are to die for, the tarts (though $$) and cake balls are always a great sweet treat, the vegan chocolate cupcake in particular is really good, and the croissants and danishes are awesome. Plus when they have them, their parfaits with maple skyr are super underrated but yummy! Their coffee is pretty good, definitely not the highlight though. read more

I've been here a couple of times and have now tried their chocolate chip cookie (excellent), their gougeres (puffy and delicious, not overly cheesy), and their baguette. The baguette! What a good baguette! It has that crispy crust and creamy, opalescent interior that stretches when you pull a piece off... it's what a baguette should be. You don't even need butter. Also they keep great hours! 6:30AM to 7PM most days, so you can come home from work and grab a baguette to go with supper. I'm withholding a star FOR NOW because I'm not sure how consistent they are (only got that one baguette so far) and because I haven't tried any of the "patisserie" yet. This little shop looks like it serves baked goods skillfully crafted by artisans who care. I had wanted to try one of their chocolate croissants, which I had seen earlier in the day. But they were all out. I thought I was settling for the almond croissant, but it was fantastic. Fresh, flaky, buttery, with an enviable balance of light sweetness and almond flavor. Mmm; makes me happy just thinking about it. If I lived anywhere in the area, I'd be a regular visitor. Am sad to be too far away to try more of their goodies. why didn't I ever go in before? I discovered this place my last semester at Smith so the only way I got to try all you see in the pictures was by doing a "Tart Baking Co tasting" with Kady. We bought three or four things and talked about then, shared them, kept the rest for later. Yes, I can tell you right away that I am a big fan of this bakery. Their pastries and breads are made there and they always have different things to offer. Everything looked so so good; it was always hard to choose. Coming from France, I wondered if the almond croissant would be worth it. After trying it, I wanted to go in the back and congratulate the baker and pâtissier because it was better than some I've had in France. almond croissant - Great! The top was a bit thick but not too sweet. Fantastic job. chocolate hazelnut tart - not mind-blown over the crust. Chocolate tarts aren't my favorite but this was good. apple & rosemary focaccia - yum! good flavors. Very interesting and delicious with homemade feel. sticky bun - More like a sticky croissant, really. Good, not the best (which would be Flour's) jersey milk - apparently amazing. I've never seen that anywhere else... cream puff w/ caramel - holy jesus was that delicious! 5 stars right there. black coffee - normal, decent coffee. Definitely better than Haymarket's (sorry Haymarket...) Whenever I go back to Smith College for a reunion (which I hope I will be able to do) Tart will be a must. There are so many places I love going to in Northampton but if you're around for a day or two, try to make it there for a treat in the morning or the afternoon. It'll be worth it. read more

This past week 3 friends & I decided to go to the top pastry shops in Northampton, to root-out a potential haunt! We each ordered something, split it 4 ways then compared notes. Our opinions were somewhat unanimous, but since we're friends maybe our "tastes" are alike, that's a for a sociology major! Admittedly, we went at 2 pm in the afternoon, perhaps this changes things in the world of pastries/breads. I still think things should hold-up though so I'm not looking the other way on the timing issue. Tart Baking sounded like it was going to be fantastic but I was disappointed. First they had 6-7 choices of savory pies with meat and only 1 veggie and not one "sweet" pie option. The savory I got was the usual boring curried veg. tart. My friends enjoyed it but I wasn't happy I didn't get a heads'-up on the spice . I was looking for something more creative and imaginative from a business that calls its' self Tart. My friends all enjoyed the meat pie 3 thumbs up but it again didn't look like anything special to me (when it was opened up). I think they were just happy to chow down on carni. We got an oatmeal cookie it was too thin and crunchy, usually a sign they were not cooked on a cool baking sheet. I hope that wasn't deliberate, I don't like thin crunchy cookies. We also got an almond croissant. It was two thumbs down. It was far too heavy for my taste (too many layers of dough and too thick) with not enough almost filling. We all agreed Tart was OK at best and on the pricey side. read more

I've only been here once and when I went it was pretty picked over with not many options to choose from. We got a croissant and an almond croissant. The croissant was good, nice and fluffy, and the almond croissant was a hit (although it is filled, so if you don't like that, be wary). Overall this isn't the kind of place I'd brag about as it wasn't exceptional, but it was good. I'll probably go here again if I'm in the area. EDIT: After being here a couple times I have to say that it gets a big fat 'meh' from me. The pastries are okay. Not bad, but not particularly noteworthy either. Their options are limited, and nothing is awful that I've tried, but nothing is exceptional either. I wouldn't recommend this place to friends, but if you are in the area and need a bite to eat quickly it's not a terrible choice. I'm going to keep looking for better bakeries in the Noho area, though. read more

Went here for the first time. I've walked past it many times but after it was closed. There's not much room to set it is definitely more of a Takeaway place. They had a lot of cookies and some pastries and surprisingly they had a lot of savory pastries like meat pie and knishes. And luckily for me, having spent a substantial amount of time in England, they had sausage rolls! I ended up getting an espresso and a sausage roll and both were very very good. I haven't tried any of their sweet pastries or some of the various fresh breads they had but they look good. The sausage roll was a little bit more price wise than I was expecting but it's not something you should eat too often anyway so I'm not complaining. I'll definitely be coming back read more

I've only been here once but am planning on returning. Most of the reviews seem to be about the baked goods. I had an almond croissant, which I thought was very flavorful and tasty. To me, what really sets this place apart is the coffee. I got a $5 cappuccino and while it is a little small and pricey, it's quality makes up for it. The beans and the preparation are clearly on the mark. It reminds me of Intelligentsia Coffee. I will return again mainly for the coffee as a special treat though I wouldn't go there regularly. It's good to know where I can get a high end coffee when I want one. read more

Today was my first visit to Tart, I will be back for a second visit. I ordered a decaf coffee (they had none, so instead made me a decaf Americano) and a Almond Croissant. Overall my experience was very good, but I wasn't blown away. I gave them 3 stars as a solid start. I have no problem rating them up after additional visits. First the good: The coffee and service were both excellent. If I could, I'd give them five stars just for the coffee and service. I was waited on by two staff members (one took my order, another made the coffee). They were attentive, friendly and professional in the fulfillment of my requests. I believe Tart is owned by the same folks that own Northampton/Amherst/Greenfield Coffee. As a result they a) serve really good coffee (Barrington Coffee Roasters); and b) they know how to brew it properly. As I mentioned above, I ordered a decaf coffee and received a tasty decaf Americano. This is part of the reason I like them. If I wanted coffee that had been sitting in an airpot for hours I'd go elsewhere. They appeared to have a healthy selection of breads available for purchase, but I did not investigate them (this time). Second the ok: Given that their name is 'Tart' I'd expect to find at least a one in the case. They did have what appeared to be an Apple Gallette, but that was as close as it came. And yes, I acknowledge that a Galette is a kind of tart, but you know what I mean. They had the prerequisite Almond Croissant, which bought and I found acceptable. The filling was tasty and moist, but the croissant itself was kind of dry and hard (more crumbly than flaky). They also had a couple types of cookies, muffins/sticky buns and other pastries, all of which looked good. As I wrote above, the overall experience was good. I will go back for a second visit and will sample other goods at some point. I hope that the selection of treats will diversify a little (tarts or a pie!). read more

Baklava gets one star, the only worthwhile thing in there for me. Very sweet treat which few other cafes make. I've tried their delicious looking triple chocolate cookie, that only turned out so-so. & their almond meringue is okay, not bad but nothing special. Their other cookies, like their lemon cookie & oatmeal raisin are decent, but again, nothing special or worth eating again. Coconut balls are slightly better. So all this' 2 stars for being not bad, edible, yet nothing special. & I take away one star for the worst cake I've ever had in my life, & an expensive one too. Dry chocolate sponge that scratches your throat, & frosting that's way too buttery & sickly ... It was for a special occasion, & incredibly disappointing. I'm not ever eating here again. read more

I appreciate that I am consistently met with quiet, attentive staff here. In my experience, this place is solid, and has less bustle and intensity than many other coffee shops in town. I love that they have hot savory hand pies, but I wish they were a little lighter, less greasy and had more filling to crust ratio. Be prepared to wipe lots of crumbs off your shirt if you eat a hand pie or croissant--even if you keep it in the bag when you bite it! They make a unique to Northampton rectangle sprouted rye loaf on Tuesdays. It is dense in a good way--moist and flavorful with a great texture. It can be sliced thin--and stays fresh for days just wrapped in it's paper bag. (*tip-you can ask to buy just half a loaf!) Baguettes are flavorful and a perfect balance of crisp and fluff. read more

Found this place by accident and was THRILLED. We had gougres (spelling?) which were savory, puffy and so good that they didnt make it to the car. We also tried one of the meat pies which were warm, flavorful and plenty for the two of us. (As some other reviewers mentioned, it is all to go so we didnt hang out to eat). For drinks I got a soy chai (EXCELLENT and the barista told me they make it themselves) and my friend had an americano which she enjoyed. Makunda and his team have done it again. This place is perfect. From the high quality espresso drinks and coffee, to the top notch croissants, and everything else I could eat here everyday. I had one of their savory pies and it was delicious. There is a good selection and I chose the chicken poblano pie. It was the perfect size for lunch. It started with a flaky crust perfectly browned on top. The chicken was moist, soft and amazing. I have had many pies in my life and this one is at the top. read more

Stopped in here last weekend for a quick bite and a coffee. We ordered two coffees, an almond meringue, and a power cookie. They ran out of drip coffee, but offered to substitute an americano, which was nice and very accommodating. Their baguette is to-die-for... Crispy and crunchy on the outside (but doesn't cut the top of your mouth) and buttery deliciousness on the inside. It was hard to actually save it for dinner and not eat it directly out of the bag. Finally - a decent baguette in the valley!! Their Chiabatta is good too - with maybe a something special added, lemon? sweetness? I'm not sure, but it was subtle and delicious. I adore this place. The coffee is incredible and the baked goods are out of this world! Sometimes we make a 15 minute detour just to swing in to see what they've got. My only caveat is that the place is somewhat small, and there's very few seating options available. There's one massive circular standing table in the middle that is super cool, but doesn't make sense functionally. I wonder what it would look like with a few small tables instead! I like that Northampton has a bakery like this, European in style and selection... But it's definitely NOT European in taste and execution!! I have tries a few of their pastries (brought home a variety for breakfast to guests) and I've had better, much better. Their goodies are heavy and dry. Here are my two main issues: 1- Everyone knows croissants are supposed to be light, airy, and flaky. Not here- almond croissants are way too heavy!... As well as the plain croissants! 2- The pastry is not the only thing that is heavy... Watch out of the heavy prices, too! I bought 12 mini triangular cookies for a dinner party for 3 couples. when i saw the cookies (smaller than a Doritos chip) so insignificant looking in the big box, I debated if I should add a few more. Well, thank god I didn't!!!!! I was flored when I was told to pay $30!!!! I guess I must have not noticed that they were $2.50 each!!! Rip off. I was so shocked I said something to the cashier... Something to the effect of "I'll buy them only this time". To end on a positive note, I do like their baguettes and coffee. For me, this is when I will stop in. Not for anything else. read more
