It's quite rare that I give any small family-owned business this low of a rating as many small…read morebusiness owners work their absolute hardest to stay afloat. This takes me to the Riverbank/Modesto area where I had the opportunity to check out "Thrift Shop & More". When searching for thrift shops in the Modesto area, a different business name came up tied to this address, "Shaws Hole-n-The-Wall". However, at some point, they had changed their name. Located at a small strip mall at the corner of Oakdale Rd & Sylvan Ave, it is tough to determine as to when this place actually opened. The front parking area leaves a lot to be desired as I saw a ton of miscellaneous furniture and other various knick-knacks placed in cardboard boxes. Once entering, there were three (3) ladies (which I am guessing is the owner & employees) sitting down and chatting away. My lady and I were quite surprised that the narrow pathway went as far back as it did. Think of the actual walking area as a somewhat rectangular layout yet with used, secondhand merchandise placed in all directions. The primary issue I have with this place is that I did not see a single thing I liked here! Parking here with the 'main' entrance seemed a bit questionable as the entire strip-mall was quite dilapidated. But the inside had stuff that you're more likely to see at a yard sale. However, the one drawback is that none of the merchandise had price tags on it. There was one clutch purse that my lady liked; however, it had some defects on it. One of the ladies said $10 then the other lady said $5. However, having thoroughly inspected it, I don't think it was even worth that much. When you factor in the cleanliness of the establishment, weird layout, a suspect location (even though In-N-Out Burger is a block away), and no prices on what looks like more trash than treasures, I am giving "Thrift Shop & More" a lower than average two-star rating. I would hope Yelp updates the name as well as the business hours. As of August 2026, their business hours are 10am-6pm seven days a week. Will I be back here? Probably not. But if you ever pass through this part of Modesto, check it out for yourself and you'll see what I mean.

The customer service today was severely lacking. It was appalling the apathetic attitude I…read morereceived. I asked several employees (as I tried to hunt one down for help), one by one I was met with "I'm busy at the register!" (Even though she was walking in the store helping another customer). "That is not my department!" (As she stayed seated, not bothering to call someone else for help) "Go take a number and wait" (Even though I wasn't needing help from the fabric counter, and it had an extremely long line). "We don't have that!" (Is the attitude I got when the line had finally died down). If I was not with my friend, who really wanted to be there, I would have just left. I literally came in for one item. Believe me, I should have just left. If an employee (or several in this instance) cannot be bothered to help customers in a polite and helpful manner, they don't deserve my business or to work there, in my opinion. Most of their items are overpriced, I would hardly call it a value. I am upset that they would treat any customers in this way. However, to treat customers with a disability in this manner, is inexcusable. I was so upset during my time at the Modesto Joann Fabric and Craft Store today. The only silver lining was the young woman at the register when we were ready to check out. I didn't catch her name, but she was wearing face painting make-up from the movie Saw. She was super helpful and friendly. She is a 5 star employee. The rest were God-awful! Bottom Line: I won't be back any time soon.
